[Q] Dell Venue 8 - Firefox very slow - Dell Venue

Has any other Dell Venue 8 (or Venue 7 even) owners installed and had problems with Firefox?
For me, it is very very slow. It does not matter which website I visit. The same sites appear nice and quickly on Chrome and the the default web browser (does it have an actual name?).
If you have not tried Firefox. Can you try it out and see if you have the same experience?

It can't be downloaded.. Always throw Error package file is invalid.
Can you please see if your Venue 8 has this issue.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2562719

I've noticed the same thing.

Ok final version, I wasn't able to install, but instead installed the new the beta version and this behaves exactly the same as chrome and stock android browser.

Yup, Firefox for Android seems to take a long time to load a page but once it does, it renders it very smoothly. Seems like it might be relying on native libraries that haven't been properly ported to x86 on Android.

New update for Firefox seems to be much quicker now.

Firefox for O1 (Fennec) ARM v6 nightly TESTING PLEASE!!

ok, i saw this article on gizmodo so i tried to download it. apparantly O1 is in the "not supported so go away" list. So i tried the experimental ARM v6 build, cause it told me too, and when i run it, it goes into infinate load loop. Using Prime ROM.
Anyone would like to try?
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Mobile/Platforms/Android#ARMv6_.28experimental.29
QR code is provided in the link.
For devices with ARMv6 processors, like the HTC Hero, Legend, Droid Eris, Wildfire, or Samsung Moment. (See below for a longer list of phones.)
Note: The ARMv6 build not supported, and is known to crash frequently. Many older Android phones do not have enough RAM or storage to run current Fennec builds.

there are a gazillion browsers for android and u r still stuck on Firefox..Get it over it man...FF for android is still under development ..Buggy and ppl need to restart it all the time....I wudnt care much abt it..Dolphin Mini suites most my needs ..Its got JS suport so i can download files from rapidshare, megaupload etc. unlike opera Mini..Try MAxthon too ..Its new and its good
Man don't be so negative, our phone is awesome !
it's just experimental ! you can't run it now but you will in a while !
be patient, use Opera,Dolphin etc etc there is a billion web browser out there !
The moment you bought otimus one, you should be well aware that there are compromises because of its affordable price. there are tons of good browsers available, firefox is on beta if im not mistaken. And still has bugs. Our phone is great just dont expect it to perform like a high-end device.
This just made me chuckle. Dude go use a myTouch for a few months, then come back to this phone. It would be like comparing a Ford Model T to a Vette.

what about using dolphin HD ? I am using it with lots of extensions, like firefox sync etc and it works great.
..Anyone here have a copy of the Fx mobile for ARMv6? seem it is being removed from the page and their FTP
Second thoughts : stock browser is good enough. I have this behavior thinking that stock =bad

Try Firefox 7, it might change your mind. Reviews by tech websites and some users have reported the newest FF being faster and lighter than Chrome. I can't vouch for the because I never used Chrome on a regular basis, but it's definitely light, the version that finally got me to upgrade after holding on to FF 3.6 for months.
As for mobile browsers, the AOSP browser uses the same engines as Chrome, so it's already like having chrome in our phone. That said, with Opera Mini & Dolphin around I see no reason why I should use a buggy Fennec that doesn't officially support my phone.

, right now using opera mini and stock browser on phone
if you really want firefox, you can run debian in a chroot and use iceweasel (firefox 3.5)
or you can run old version of ubuntu that still supports armv6 in chroot and use straight-up firefox.
it's a little slow in the vnc viewer, and you can't deal with much media because of the speed, but it handles uploads and downloads way better than stock android browser, and opens pages that android's chrome-ish browser won't.
I use iceweasel when I can't get to something with the stock browser.
just my 2 cents, since this topic's been pulled from the graveyard for discussion.

I've seen a thread for debian on optimus one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996746
and am in one for debian on the optimus v
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1129803
you can use the debian stable version (6.0) I uploaded and then upgrade once it's running on your phone, or you'll have to debootstrap your own image using wheezy (is wheezy 7.0?) or sid as you prefer, instead of squeeze, as laid out in the O-One thread above.
I'm not sure about ubuntu, which you'd need for an up-to-date firefox release, but you can search for ubuntu filesystem chroot images, they're around too.

[Q] alternatives to ie and opera.

I've tried dorothy and Uzard..
Generally Netfront isn't bad. The problem is it suffers from some strange out of memory error on certain pages. It's strange because in earlier versions (back in 2007/2008) this wasn't the case. But I think its worth a try nonetheless.
anyone know of any more? this can't be it
Hm I think that's it. I mean if you count them you will realise that you have the choice out of 6 different browsers. That's not really bad for a platform like Windows Mobile which isn't supported anymore.
Oh wait, we forgot opera mini. That would mean 7.

For Windows Mobile probably never. Development has more or less stopped since it's a dead os. Maybe for Windows Phone 7.
i wish they would put out an update for wm 6.5 -> 7
And I wish they would dispose of WP7 and restart to develop Windows Mobile.
amen to that one

Microsoft won't ever go back
Windows mobile was very open as far as what you could run on it, making it difficult to lock it down like android, wp7 or ios.
These companies are interested in making people have to buy all software to run on the device from their store
That's why I wont get WP7. I mean I hate google but in the end android is the only os for smartphones that is at least open to some extent.
Q: New Problem with Opera 9.7 Accessing m.facebook.com
Opera 9.7 was included in the ROM that I'm currently using and has worked fine with everything, except for the mobile Facebook site (m.facebook.com) within the last 2 weeks (FB must be changing things again ).
It will not allow me to access anything except to update my own status. Clicking on any link to view comments, photos, etc. (whether they're friends or my own) results in an error message saying that the page is not accessible at the moment or I do not have the proper permissions. Is there another version of Opera that will work?
Internet Explorer works OK, but the font in the already small comments box is so freakin' tiny, it makes having to use it a total PITA. I've been using FIM v2.8 for mostly everything, but viewing photos on it is difficult (since the photo size is un-scalable) and I can't copy/paste with FIM.
Any help with a browser replacement (Opera upgrade?), that will make the mobile FB site usable for me again, will be greatly appreciated! [I despise the official FB application and avoid it like the plague. There's no chance they will ever improve it for Windows Mobile, anyway.]
EDIT: Downloaded Opera Mini 5 and Opera 10; decided to try Mini 1st... What an improvement! The FB mobile site now works as it should.
Haven't tried 10 yet, but didn't I read something somewhere that people found that the zoom bar no longer works in that version? I may give it a go at some point, but for right now, I'm happy with Mini 5!
Thanks everyone!
Debbie
Why don't you try the final release of Opera 10? Opera 9.7 is really outdated. OK, 10 is old too but it's as recent as it gets on WM.
opera mini
opera mini, the fastest & best websurfing software.

Android Phone cannot access this website

Me and my friend cannot access this website from our android phones (mine is 2.3.4) for my workplace:
tinyurl.com/89mvcb5
It just pulls up a blank white page on my android phone. The page opens up without problems from my android tablet, ipad tablet, home pc/laptop, and iphone.
I though it was https issue but my android phone can open up other https websites. I also tried Dolphin HD browser with different user agents on the android phone without any success. Tried Opera mini - no go. Tried different proxy servers but still blank white page on my phone.
Do you guys have any suggestions?
Have you tried using the XDA app?
Thats odd, both Dolphin HD and Opera Mobile display a white page like you said. Its blank in Opera on the desktop but works in Chrome. Something must be wrong in the code somewhere. It does load correctly in Firefox, so that is probably your best bet.
Spunker88, nice job.
Firefox is working great. Firefox's code is doing something right that the other 3 browsers (google, dolphin, opera) aren't doing.
Decided to check it out.
Works here on my Ainol Novo7 Elf using Dolphin HD.
Grrr....................
nejc121, it also works on my android tablet. Site works on tablets but not on phones. It didn't work on my android phone 2.3.4 until I installed firefox. Your Ainol Novo 7 is a tablet.

Chromium OS Builds

Just recently started building these for one of my laptops. Not sure how great compatibility is to start but it ran and installed on every device I tried on, mostly devices from within the last 5 years 64 but capable.
One problem I noticed on some older devices, it doesn't auto boot. I will post instructions to get the image to boot shortly.
***Directions to install***
1. Burn to usb drive:
Code:
#sdX should be your usb device
dd if=/path/to/img/chromiumos-1.23.15-x86_64.img of=/dev/sdX
Or use equivilant windows tool to burn similar to these directions http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows
2. Boot from USB drive, some devices have errors, fix will be posted soon
3. Switch virtual terminals to get to a text prompt - CTRL+ALT+F2
4. Login - username: chronos password: password
5. Elevate privs:
Code:
sudo su -
#type password again
6. Run installer:
Code:
/usr/sbin/chromeos-install
***Downloads***

md5sum b73b5ae6eec3c1497a35e97212243fda
***Source***
Right now just building from master at https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromiumos/manifest.git
Plan on forking things soon
***Thanks***
Thanks to everyone who is working hard on the Chromium OS project

Is there any way I could run Chromium OS on an old Mac Mini?
Sent from my A0001 using XDA Free mobile app
I have an interest in Chromium builds. I am trying to find ones that will work on a wide variety of hardware.
Like: Acer Aspire One 722-0473. This one has 64 bit Amd c-60 dual core, Radeon HD and Atheos wifi. So far everything is locking up at the first screen where the 3 drop down menus are. I would be perfectly happy to boot with 32 bit, lite distro.
Like a Dell Latitude D530. Appears to have Broadcom wifi but won't boot at all. Gets to the unpacking kernal screen and starts complaining.
Like a Dell Inspiron 910 Mini. This actually has a small SSD. It boots but doesn't recognize the touch pad.
I have had to resort to Chromixium.org which has a chromebook look-alike project.
Or to Zorin OS which has a Windows 7 look-alike that maybe I can get to automagically start Chrome browser.
I both am curious and there is actually a business opportunity out there. Installing a "more or less" production version of Chromium OS on old/slow netbooks could become a side job if I could get them to work.

If its Intel hardware it should work, there might even be something for their old ppc hardware but not 100% sure.

I can't make any promises on functionality, I have only explored the source a little bit and I am sure troubleshooting without me having the same exact hardware will be hard but I will put something up for you guys to test. Keep a look out for it in this thread in the next day or 2.
There are a few things I have ran across for getting it to boot from USB so I will most likely update op with some directions and notes that I have.

Question regarding Android 4.3 and Android Browser 4

First, thank you for letting me post here. I'm sorry if I'm asking an obvious question, but this problem has me puzzled.
I have a Galaxy S3 and S4 with Android 4.2 and 4.3, respectively. If I use the native Android Browser or Chrome, I have no trouble viewing pages. If i use Dolphin or Opera, I also have no trouble. HTTPS pages seem to load fine.
However, I love the Habit Browser. I believe it is based on Android Browser 4 (at least that's what browser identifier pages tell me). If I try to load most HTTPS pages, I get a message saying the browser could not connect or the page is unavailable. This also happens with the Mercury Browser, Sleipnir Browser, Lightning Browser and Rocket Browser.
My LG running Android 5 has no such problems. Therefore, I'm guessing the problem is related to the operating system. If so, is there anything I can do without rooting to fix the problem? Thank you for any help!
