I've been hacking Android since my Droid Eris so it embarrasses me to ask this question, but the quicker I can put this behind me the better.
What are the latest radios for the S4? Only thing I haven't flashed and can't find it...please, someone tell me how much of a noob I am.

Given the devices are effectively the same, I would have thought it would be fairly easy to export the ROM and convert the regular S4 to the one I actually want with out buying a new one.
Now since I haven't seen anything I figured I'd post it. What gives?
There's really no ROM difference, as far as I'm aware. Just the Dev edition has an unlocked bootloader...which cannot be exported from that phone to ours.

What gives is that the rom is already out there because it is the same as the subsidized phone.

I thought it was also free of touchwiz and the other verizon bloatware... is that not the case?
To the mod.. sorry if this was the wrong spot or a repeat. I didn't see what I was after in a quick search, but maybe I wasn't as thorough as I should have been.

I dont think the Google Edition will be released on Verizon. GSM phone, which is the main reason its so hard to port for us. Dubbsy and Nitro have pretty excellent ports available now, though.
There's a Google edition ROM that's already out for the Verizon S4. Hell, I'm running it now and its flawless. The only thing not working is the carrier label in the notification shade. Other than that its perfect.

theres only a few roms available... i kinda assumed that since the s4 is such a popular phone there would be a huge amount of roms to choose from... maybe im dumb or doing something wrong... :/

Neither of you last statements are correct. The lack of development is coming from a yet to be cracked ME7 boot loader as well as a just recently released MI1 update. If you are on MDK kernel still there are quite a few roms out there for your enjoyment.

There's a healthy amount of roms available. Not to mention when some roms (like AOKP) use rootzwiki.

Eclipse TW edition. It's so good that no one comments on the thread... no bugs.
Plus the pile of AOSP-based usual suspects.
Does this need to be a thread? Go look through the forums, and try whatever you think will work best for you and try them out. If you think the development is dead then don't get the S4 or sell it for something else. What are you looking for? someone to tell you that it's not dead, you should keep your phone, better things are coming? If your satisfied with the phone and what you have on their great, if not, do whatever you feel.
The ME7 issue killed a lot of development, there's no denying it. Just look at the development forums of an S4 from a different carrier.
Although the few ROM's that are available for this device are real quality. Really we should all stop debating about it and start cooking our own ROM's.

It's you. There's a lot of development for the S4. We don't need 10 Roms that are all the basically the same. We have CM, touchwiz with plenty of tweaks, AOSP, and Google edition. Is there something I am missing?

What he said.
If you do, you won't likely keep root across the OTA, and won't be rootable afterwards.
Any chance of a bootloader breach is also lower once you update. Just say no,
Android 4.4 + TW = lipstick on a pig
Can't wait for this update, I'm taking it in a heartbeat. A shame there's no word on it for Verizon.

I no longer see a need to root. So much function is freely given now. The only reason I would root again would be for ad block. That said, break me off a piece of that Kit Kat!

What aspect of it are you looking forward to the most?
NFL Mobile. That right there is one HUGE reason to root. Get that crap off your phone, unless you a willing lemming drone to the NSA and you have "nothing to hide"...
Seriously... I don't get it. Those of you that are on SafeStrap mk2 or mj7 are better off staying where you are. You're not missing some huge thing other than saying... Your s4 is on KitKat.
I have a sprint s4 on TW 4.4 and let me tell u...it looks just like TW 4.3.
So keep root..keep SafeStrap and wait and see if the XDA gods can bring root to it first before anything else.
I don't know I guess this kitkat thing is already tickin me off!
Do what you want.

An update is an update...I enjoy browsing through for new things. It's like flashing a rom? Some people like stock, it's clean and functional . Have been rooting and installing roms since my og droid days and this is the first device that I find no need to root to enjoy. It's filled with customizable options and speed.
I am sure Vroot can already root this. I will be updating when its out and root.

Second: The article is comparing Verizon with the NSA. It doesn't say they're working "with" them. Also, do you honestly think that NFL Mobile is the only way they can track your info?

You can't, it's not possible because no bootloader exploit has been found since MDK.

One person has claimed it's possible through JTAG, but they declined to provide proof and nobody else has been able to do it.

So it is definitely not possible at this time.
If you want to run AOSP/etc you'll need to buy a used S4 with MDK (e.g. on swappa). They generally sell for a bit more than non-MDK ones, but I've seen them as low as $310-$335 recently. Lowest currently is $360 though. Basically, assuming your S4 is in mint/near-mint condition the price difference should be under $50 if you were to sell yours and buy one with MDK.
