Disabling the radio/SIM but not the wifi - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Need to disable the sim so the i717 no longer acts as a cell phone so I can give it to my daughter (who is 6). Dont need her to start calling and texting just yet :silly: and no longer use the i717 since I have a Nexus 5 now. Just wondering if there was a way of disabling it or the no sim card warning permently.

Remove the SIM card?

Or put in an old non active sim card.
I bet the screen is smashed in lest than a week.

Why do want to keep sim inside? Any specific reason?

Put it on Airplane mode and then you can just turn on the Wifi or bluetooth too if you want.

Also if you reboot with airplane mode on the missing Sim card error won't show up

[Q] How to Unlock Sim Card?

Hey guys, I'm leaving the country for a bit and want to bring my x10 for the camera / wifi. If I leave my sim card in there I will get charged for roaming.... Just wondering if anyone knows where a guide is to make it so I can use the phone without my sim card in it so I can just use the wifi and camera.
I look around a bit but the ones I found were for different phones =/
Thanks Guys
You can just disable roaming in settings.
Settings »» wireless & network »» mobile network »» then disable data traffic and roaming etc and you should be fine

You can use your phone fine without a SIM card in it aswell. Just take it out and turn on your phone.
But as the above says, you can just disable Data
Just enable airplane mode

This is not always true....AT&T's branded firmware will not let you do ANYTHING with the phone without an active sim card. After powering it on the phone locks up and tells you to insert a working sim card. You can't even get to your home screen or app drawer.

Yup, same thing with an Orange locked X10i.
If the phone has a sim lock, you can't use it without a sim.

However if you have had the phone for six months you can try to ask att for the unlock code. They are supposed to give it to you.

yeah, they are supposed to do lots of things lol...don't forget this is at&t, after all. if your bill is current, youve had the handset for 6 mos and they won't give it to you, call better business and the fcc. i can almost guarantee they will fight you though :-\

[request] using a 2nd phone SIM card through Bluetooth

There are gimmicks, like the http://www.skygmate.com/18-gmate-plus-white.html Gmate plus, that allow having a second SIM card for your Android or iOS device. They get your second SIM and connect to your main device with Bluetooth; with the appropriate app like https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simo.simomate you can place and receive calls and SMS messages and also do gprs connections.
My question is, could we do the same with a regular phone instead of a Gmate? I mean, connecting your Android smartphone to a second, Bluetooth-enabled phone, and placing and receiving calls through its SIM card?
I have found nothing like that in Play Store, but I guess it's possible and also useful.

Maybe if I go on bugging people on this, some developer will do the miracle!
I just want to use my Android phone to control by bluetooth another (Android or not) phone, to place and receive calls, using the first phone for loudspeaker and mic. Like it had 2 sim cards. Can it be done?

I m looking for something very similar. I have a OEM sat nav/car phone thats pre bluetooth so has it's own sim slot. Its a pain to keep taking out the sim every time I get in and out the car, so I d like something that I can slot into the carphone's sim card slot that connects via bluetooth fo my phone. It would have to make the carphone think its just a normal sim, when in reality it would actually be remotely accessing my phone's sim card. Its perfectly possible, you d just need a bluetooth dongle, a small chip to convert the info from bluetooth to something the other phone thinks is a sim. Woudlnt have to be a smartphone, could work with any phone with bluetooth to control another phone, no need for apps or anything. trouble is, whilst all the components exist for it to be possible, no one actually comdines them into a product.
I'm searching for this since a long time. Do you find something ?
Should I feel bad about bumping this thread because I'm looking for the same thing?

Anyone else have this happen to them??
Alls been well since i got the replacement 3 weeks ago and then today it happens again
I get this problem at work but not at home. What's your connection like? Many APNs connected to it? That's what seems to be my problem at work

Everything is fine no matter where i am, just this morning it reverted back to the "emergency calls only", same as what my 1st Galaxy S3 did and when i go to select network it just says cant connect to network!
Sim card works in other phones no problem
Is your SIM card recognized by the phone?
Does it have a SIM Serial Number? (Afaik you can e.g. use Z Device Test to see the SIM S/N)
Sorry are you talking about cellular network or WiFi?

So annoying

[Q] Phone goes into "Emergency calls only" mode ?

It seems that everytime I plug my phone to the charger for few hours, it goes into Emergency calls only mode where I have no data and no calls incoming nor outgoing. Only way to solve it is to restart the phone or turn Airplane mode on and off to reset. Is this a common problem ? Could it have happened from unlocking my boot loader and rooting ?
I'm considering switching to the custom ROM "the base" in order to maybe solve this
Well I think this is new. Could just be a bad sim card. I don't have this problem and I haven't seen anyone else mention having it. I'd go to where ever I got it and have them swap the sim and if that didn't work the phone.
I would open the sd card/sim card cover and make sure sim is inserted fully. It should lock into place and need to be pushed in further to eject. I used a paperclip to push it in.

I actually had this happen to me like two days ago. I had just texted someone before walking to the lower level of a mall to go shopping. I took a look at my phone a little later and my phone was stuck on Emergency Calls with no data coming in. The carrier on the status bar wasn't even there anymore. Restarted my phone and all was fine. Not sure what caused it.
I've had this the last two days in areas I've always had great service. Wonder what's up with it.

Base rom has this enabled, or you need to be rooted and edit build prop.
I had this happen last week. I did the airplane mode toggle to clear it... but it freaked me out for a few minutes.
Running The Base, sk8r's kernel during install, no change to the LTE setting, no crazy mods applied.
I also sit in a nearly-dead-zone at work, and I have lost the data connection. Moving into the clear does not fix the issue. Reboot has been required.
This Android App Might Help
I had just the same problem with my Samsung Galaxy S2 with UK mobile provider Three.
I eventually wrote an app called which reconnects whenever it detects that the phone has got locked into Emergency Calls Only.
Maybe it will be of use to you. Search Google Play for "Cell Reconnect". Seems I'm not allowed to post links here yet...
Figured it out for my phone
I got a refurbished LG optimus G E970 from a seller online and had this issue the second day of using it. I checked to see if it was the SIM or SD card by putting them into my old phone, but that wasn't it because the old phone still functioned properly making calls/messages. I even did a factory reset on the phone. Still didn't work. I finally just decided to change the mobile networks to my provider's GSM network and it worked. Not sure why it didn't work in the first place since I never changed the network, but this did the trick.

Hello. Could you please elaborate on how you fix that issue? I'm currently on T-mobile and my unlocked AT&T LG E980 is losing signal like crazy, just briefly loses signal and goes into emergency mode only. It is so annoying though. Would really appreciate any insight on it. Thanks.

Will try it. Thannks..

AOSP tried to *228, failed and lost LTE

As the title says I tried to reprogram my phone to see if it might pick up new towers with *228 while on an AOSP rom, the message said it was unable to program the phone and now it will only connect with 3G. I figured I could flash a TW rom and reprogram it there, however the TW just pops up a quick message saying the SIM is programmed without actually placing a call.
Is there any way to restore LTE once lost in this fashion? I've googled but couldnt find anything, I even reverted to stock in Odin hoping it would reprogram at boot but it did not solve anything.

You're never supposed to dial *228 from a LTE phone, it screws up your SIM card. The only way I have seen the problem fixed is to get a new SIM card by either going to a store or calling 611 and getting them to send it to you.
The correct way to force it to update, instead of calling *228, is to power down the phone, pull the SIM out, power on the phone, let it sit for 5 minutes, power it off and reinsert the SIM, and boot back up. Thats what works now with LTE SIMs.
I dont know if your SIM can be fixed or you will have to get a new one before LTE will work again but every time I have seen this happen the person always had to replace the SIM.

As stated above, you never use the *228 function to update an LTE device. A new sim is the solution.
Thanks guys, replacement sim is on its way.

I take it you mean a completely new SIM card, if the SIM card has already been used (like in your old phone) and you want to use it then just insert it into the phone. If its a SIM card thats already been used and you want to switch it to a new num ber you're **** out of luck. VZW only activates each SIM once and cannot, or will not, switch it to a different number.
If it is a completely new SIM card the call VZW and tell them you need to activate a new SIM and give them the info they need, which is usually just the number on the SIM card, and once they finish with it just pop it in your phone.
