Slow Wifi Speed But Excellent Signal Strength - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a DSL 512 kbps plan. I get an average speed of 62 KB/s on my home PC. I also have a home router.
My galaxy S2 has android 4.1.2 stock JELLYBEAN. I had been using my wifi for approximately 1 month with no issue, the speed was normal.
But from the past few weeks, i had noticed that the application on my phone are taking very long to connect to the internet. Eg. Youtube loades video in 5 mins, a background wallpapers application takes very long to load pictures, Compared to previous state when videos started in seconds, and loaded pics with a blink...
Signal Strength is Excellent... I tested my speed using speedtest application.. and it was normal around 60 KB/s...
I test my wifi on my friend's mobile, and it was normal. Youtube videos started in seconds, webpages showed without any loading....
I don't think there's a problem with my ISP or router.
Please HELP !!

First try another wifi connection, and see if speeds are low there too.

It's still the same.
@ immortalneo

Have you tried a factory reset? Does that make a difference?
And try downloading a file to see if your download speed is low. If not, then the issue could be app related.
"To err is human, to forgive is divine."
Sent from my SGS II

On speedtest.net (and app) I get 5mbp/s download, my connection to the router is 54Mbp/s. So my internet is good for my phone, it isn't ultra fast, but it loads large pages within 10 sec.
If yours is 60kbp/s, it is super slow. You should pay more to get more speed. (in case if you mean your home wifi)

Still the same
@ immortalneo.
Yes, I've tried the factory reset. Still the same. I'll try to flash my stock ROM and then tell you.
And how could the problem be app related..?
@GreekBlood
Sir, it not a question about my internet connection. When my WiFi was working fine, I didn't have to wait for apps to connect to the internet.
My gmail app showed my mails at a go. YouTube took few seconds to start a video. But now, the apps are taking a hell lot of time to open.
Although they open, but after loading, loading and loading....... Google play opened within second, but now it takes very much time to load, and then show the menu apps.

It could be overloaded connections or your provider has a bad day/week/month etc.

HISTORY
V1.1 [2009-10-05]
1) Options dialog to change timeout to run the program automatically (10 by default) and web server to reach (www.google.com by default)
2) Option to reset statistics.
3) When the gui is opened its auto-refreshed automatically each 2 seconds
3) Minor fixes
V1.0[2009-10-04]
1) Initial release.
History
Hi
I ve developed a little program to solve a problem I ve many years ago. I use direct push so I need a permanent connection. This is achieved using activesync (direct push) or setting a connection as always on.
PROBLEM TO SOLVE:
Many times a connecion is stablished minutes or hours ago. But it doesnt work correctly. I dont know if the problem is in phone operator system, or in the device or some roms. Simply the connection is corrupted. If you try to suf a web it doesnt work. Clicking "sync" in activesync keeps rolling for ever. So I ve to close the connection manually (hang button long press) and stablishing a connection again. And then all works again
WHAT I SEARCHED AND DIDNT FIND:
1)A program that tries to reach a server (www.google.es) each x minutes. If there is an active connection but cant reach it then kill the connection and stablish it again. The program doesnt download the page content. Simply reach the server so very little data usage (a few bytes each time)
2) very little, no cpu consuming and no resident. Windows should run it each x minutes. Do its job in a few milliseconds and exit.
3) perform its job even if the device is suspended..
4) So I wrote my little program. It works correctly.
5) If the phone is in fly mode then it skip its job
USAGE:
Just install. No need to run it manually. It installs too a little GUI program (ConnectionStateCheckerGUI) to see some statistics (stored in the registry) like number of checks, corrupt connections, last check, etc. You can set the timeout (10 minutes) and server (http://www.google.com) in the registry.
My job needs a 100% safe real time mailing working. This little program guarantees it and maybe there are other people in my situation.
Greetings
Dani
pd: The black background is because of omnia2 skin. In other devices is a tipical white dialog.
OK. gracias nene.
all right!
Nice work buddy, a common problem that bugs a lot of people including you but you decided to do something about it and now we can all be happy.
May I redistribute this on my website?
thanks for that...
Thanks
Sure, you can use, upload, distribute or what you want with it
...and if someone has any suggestion....
First I was going to do icmp ping instead of http get but my phone company (and probably other) has blocked pings....
Greetings
Dani
Hi¡
New version on first post

Any chance of a Today screen icon? That would be more helpful than having to call the program in order to see connection status.

Good idea but MS says not to use Today plugins because arent used in WM6.5.....
The GUI only reads the statistics stored in the registry and refresh them each 2 seconds...

Thank you for this nice piece of software.
However I have few questions, right after installing and soft-resetting, then changed web reference to www.google.com and interval to 1 minute, it keeps saying that the Last Result is KO, and only Connection Fixed has the increment.
What makes it odd, is that the connection is actually OK, I can connect to www.google.com via UCWeb and Slick is running too.
This is quite bugging me, however since I only installed it for less than an hour, I'll report again whether my connection would be kept alive permanently or not by this program.

Hi
Please dont remove "http://" because this is used by WinInet to choose the correct destination. Leave http://www.google.com (or any other site but using http://) and it will work again....
Dani
I did, it's http://www.google.com, with the http://
The connection is still KO (though Slick is up and running smoothly)
Does it matter if the GPRS connection has the proxy setup?
And when I tried disconnecting the GPRS, and then use the Check Now, it won't reconnect.
Oh, btw, the Last Check field is always empty.

Yes, for sure is related with GPRS Proxy. Let me take a look at this.....
Andi,
Could you test this version? I ve added support for GPRS proxy. It works in my network but I dont use proxy. Could you try it?
Thanks
Dani,
Sorry for the late reply. I have just finished installing and voila! The Last Check is not empty anymore. I have changed the web reference to http://www.google.com, and interval still to 1 minute, and guess what, now the Last Result is OK!! and Connections OK is now the one who gets the increment. So yes! It works! When WM finished loading up, and when I use the Check Now function, it is now connecting the GPRS automatically.
So I supposed it would close and then reconnect GPRS if ever the connection gets corrupted, right?
Once again, Bravo!
Andi
Just wondering really, if I can get it scheduled for certain time only? Or I can get it stop, perhaps? It would be better than filling in the interval time of 360 minutes every night?
Hi
It seems to work correctly. Tomorrow I will comvert the beta im release amd probably will add period of checking as I did in bandswitch
Dani
Dani,
Just find another thing here.
I did say it does make an automatic connection, it *is* connecting, however, i have just found out, it does *not* end up connected at all.
What I meant by connecting, the antenna icon is having two arrows and the small box with G in it, but it won't be connected at the end of the animation.
The Connection Fix number is added, but since there is no connection in real.
In the end, I still have to use UCWeb or Slick to get connected.
-------edited
Okay, strange enough, I changed the interval to 5 minutes, and after awaited for 2 times trial, it did finally made the connection. Hm.
-------edited again
I did try certain things again. I changed back the interval to 1 minute. Then I tried the following:
* Changed the web reference to http://wap.telkomsel.com (the provider's default wap page), 3 times trial, all failed.
* Changed the web reference to http://www.google.co.id, 2 times trial, finally connected.
* Changed the web reference to http://www.google.com, 3 times trial, all failed.
* Changed the web reference to http://208.67.219.230/ (www.google.com ip address), 3 times trial, very short timed trial, all failed. I supposed it does not accept IP address as a reference?
I'm not an expert in this area, however, it does seem to me that it's related to session time-out thing.
Once the time-out reached, it drops the on-going connection trial. I concluded this because I checked my Data plan's balance, and nothing's to be deducted during the failed session.
So the work around I finally do is to change the registry at HKLM/Comm/ConnMgr/Providers/{myGPRSconn-hash-number}/title_of_conn/AlwaysOn value to decimal 1.
After that, it would get the connection established, even if it seems it doesn't receive any reply from the referred web, get passed all the session time-out variable, until the complete handshake (if this is the correct term).
Andi
wow, that was a deep test. Thanks.
Tomorrow I will try to find a gprs server with proxy to do try/error system

Hello Dani,
It has been some time since you posted here. Are you still supporting or working on this app? If you are I would like to ask a question or two having tried the app on a TMOUS HD2 recently.
A lot of the time the app works exactly as you intended - perhaps 50% or better improvement. But sometimes it is not able to disconnect and re-establish the connection for some reason. I find that it will end up in a near permanent KO result loop.
At these times the data connection is established (H or 3G) but no app can successfully connect (no email, no browser). Your app will continue trying but is not successful.
At such a time if I manually drop the data connection (via Touch X action screen, for example) the connection can be re-established within 15-30 seconds of an app trying for data. It is not immediate - some app will have to ask for a data connection and it takes some 15+ seconds before it can successfully continue.
What I am wondering is how your app is trying to do this and how is the data disconnect of Touch X different. I hope I explain it clearly.

Hi
Let me took a look at this

[Q] Streaming Video and G-Mail very broken on my Evo 3D

Two big problems with my EVO 3D that are driving me crazy:
1. I have been having this streaming video issue for a few months now. No matter what streaming video service I use (although mostly YouTube or the G4TV app) the video will start to massively lag eventually. The timing is always different, sometimes its a minute in, sometimes its 10 minutes in, but it WILL eventually start to lag. The sound is still playing, but the video stutters or flat-out stops. And it turns out its not just the video, my ENTIRE PHONE lags when this happens, so much that the hardware buttons and touchscreen don't respond until about 30 seconds to a minute later. This only appears to happen when streaming video, already-downloaded video plays just fine off of the SD card. Half of the time Sense appears to crash when this happens too, since I see it restarting after I exit the streaming app. My cousin has an EVO 3D as well and this isn't happening to him, nor have I see anyone mention about this on Google ) the instances of lag I found were buffering issues. I don't have any idea where to begin finding out what is causing this, does anyone have any hints?
2. My G-Mail app stopped working. And I don't mean it stopped syncing like it has for others before, I mean it dosen't work anymore period. I can still launch the app, my accounts are still there, but NO new mail since Janurary 12 has shown up, manually choosing refresh does nothing. I tried rebooting my phone, and even clearing the Gmail app's data.... all it does now is say "Your email will appear shortly" ... its been saying this for about three days now. I can't even use G-Mail on my phone anymore! Help?

Are you rooted? If so, are you on a custom ROM? If yes, which one? On average a simple wipe fixes the problems you talking about. I can't say much about the streaming issue since I've never experienced it, but for the Gmail issue, go into Settings>Applications>Manage applications and find Gmail, then "Clear data". Once you set it up again the problem should go away (at least that's my experience).

[Q]Is the Browser supposed to be this slow?

Is this browser supposed to be so slow?
Before you play the video turn your sound down.
http://youtu.be/_67txGwMSP0
See how slow it is to load. Is that normal. I'm on a decently fast connection. My phone seems to load the same pages quite a bit faster.
That's sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooowwww
That is slow … has it always been like that or did it just slow down?
And as long as we’re posting videos … http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNimNlYJ6xA&context=C368eccaADOEgsToPDskKnpI5_-1PwV27CP-5CZGF-
I played the video and opened the same sites on my View side by side and my device only finished loading the sites a couple seconds earlier... I also tried with Dolphin and got slight faster loading times but only in some cases. And that's with an ad-blocker enabled that should cut time by not loading the ads (especially flash based ones)!
Any ideas about further testing?
It has always been that slow. I've tried pretty much alll the other browsers out there and the result is about the same.
I'm going to try a factory reset. Unless someone else has a suggestion.
The weird thing is how it loads. Its starts off fast and then slows to a crawl. In some cases I'm done reading the page before it is completely loaded.

I noticed that … almost looks like a network problem.
One thing … are you running any kind of antivirus?
No anti virus. All of my other devices on the network run fine but the View is SLOW.
I tried a factory reset that didn't help.
Couple things you can try:
1) Open your wifi connection in settings and "forget" the connection. Then unplug your modem and router leaving them unplugged for 60 seconds. Plug the modem back in first and wait for all the lights to come on. Then plug in your router and wait for all lights to come on. Now reconnect to the router in your wifi settings. Download "Speedtest" app from the Market and run it. If you have an N router you should be getting a ping of around 50ms and download speeds of 10mbps or higher assuming you are close to the router.
2) If that doesn't give you the desired results, open you wifi connection in settings. Long press on the active connection and select "modify network". Under IP Settings select "static". Save and close out of the dialog box. Now long press on the active connection again and choose "modify network" again. Scroll down to DNS1 and type 208.67.222.222 and DNS2 and type 208.67.220.220. Then save and reboot your tablet.

I haven't seen this issue myself but I can say that web browsing has not been great for me. Got the flyer today and i have had more than 10 crashes in the browser where it just closes. This is happening with opera also. I have updated to honeycomb and have hard reset. Unfortunetly this is a big issue for me. Browsing is primarily what I would use the tablet for.
The pinch and zoom in the stock browser is very jittery and jerky also.
Anybody else?

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S3 always at 80% RAM usage / Google Now problems

So, it's been bothering me for a while but my now 2-year-and-2-month old Samsung Galaxy S3 always just runs incredibly slowly. Not only that, but I tend to burn through the battery easily within 6 hours. For the past year and a half, or so, I've had to resort to carrying around two spare batteries with me as it has a tendency to run out of charge in the middle of the day, let alone if I'm out at a music festival or something. I'm not a particulaly heavy user, as in I rarely play video games on my phone, nor do I really watch videos or ever use bluetooth. Occasionally I do use GPS or WiFi, but I try to keep them turned off when I'm not using them. I tend to use my phone for music when I'm in the car, or texting / whatsapp / occasional snapchatting, or checking Pulse News or my internet banking. I don't have a particularly huge amount of apps installed, I don't think. And I regularly hold the Home button, & press the close-all-apps button to make sure that they're not running in the background.
Yet, my phone is so laggy. It's like there's a constant 3 or 5, or even sometimes 10, second delay for whatever action you've initiated to actually occur. You'll press Messages, and it'll take about 4 seconds for my text messages to show up. You'll press Home, and it takes about 3 seconds for it to close. Facebook just took about 8 seconds to load. It doesn't sound alot, but it can be quite infuriating when you're trying to get things done in a hurry. It's even worse when apps are running in the background!
So, I got to check my running processes and there's just loads of things running that both don't appear to be running when I hold the Home button but also shouldn't be running because I haven't used them in forever. It appears my phone has approximately 850MB of RAM, yet my phone tends to ALWAYS run at around 725MB used (currently it's at 751MB, as can be seen in the screenshot attached). But when I do go through the list of things running, the right hand side it tells you how much RAM is supposedly being used. Yet if I total up all of the RAM being used by all of the apps that are apparently running, it only comes to about 300MB. So where the heck is this other 450MB of RAM being used?! THIS is what is slowing down my phone, I think.
Not only that, but there are things in this list that are running that shouldn't be running, & I don't understand why they are. Facebook, sure I can understand, in case you get a notification or something. But TuneIn Radio... I'm not listening to the radio at the moment, nor have I used the app in weeks (and my phone has been restarted numerous times since then), why is it running? S Voice, too? Video Hub? Google Play Music, I've never even used it. And then there's loads of things I haven't got a clue what they are, like Exchange Services, ELM Agent, SmartcardService, etc. Now I understand it's like a computer, where there are a number of background processes that have to run to make the OS work, but why are all these other apps running that I'm not using?!
-------------------------
Furthermore, I've started trying to use Google Now because I would like to get a Moto 360 (but I'll ask questions about that in a seperate thread). So, it seemed to work fine a few weeks ago. It gave me stocks, news updates, ETA to work or home, started remembering where I was parking. But now a few days ago I go back to it, after not using it for a little while, & it's all reset; Asking me to set it up again. So I did, & it mostly works but I can only ever seem to get the first "page" of cards up. When I click "More" at the bottom I just get an endless spinning circle & then the message "No Internet Connection - Content was last updated X minutes ago" appears as the top card, when infact I know I do have an internet connection. Exiting the app, closing it down, & then re-opening does not fix the issue either. I'm at a complete loss as to what to do.
Furthermore, it always asks me to "Improve my location: For more accurate location, let google search for Wi-Fi connections, even when Wi-Fi is off." I don't understand how this works, and what it's trying to do? If I turn it on, is that not going to be effectively the same as leaving my WiFi turned on at all times? Well, except without the benefits of being connected via WiFi. It's just going to drain my battery more, as leaving WiFi on usually does.
-------------------------
So tldr:
- Why is my RAM mysteriously using 450MB that I can't vouch for? Where is it going? How I stop it?
- Why is Google Now not letting my manually update the cards?
You are missing huge amounts of very basic information, search and read for what is safe to disable on stock rom, some things are vital others are optional.
If you leave everything running as default then 6hrs battery life is about right.

Apps not loading over Wifi

Hello,
I noticed a problem on my LG V30 H930 on Android 9.
Some apps won't load data over wifi networks (e.g my home wifi, sometimes in hotel), but not all (it works at my college, or in public wifi in shops), or they load very slowly.
For example Twitter : it plays videos or pictures only after 1 or 2 minutes of loading. However there is no such issue when I go on twitter.com in my web browser (on my phone).
Google Play Store : Downloading apps is stuck, it stays pending download for 5-10 minutes (sometimes forever). So I don't get updates whenever they are available.
Some games get stuck at the login step with my google play games account.
I have an Internet Speed widget showing only a few Bytes/s whne these apps get stuck, compared to 2-3 MBytes/s when everything is working fine
I don't have these problems using 4G
So I don't know if it is a network issue or the phone.
Do you have any idea ? Thanks
Are you using VPN? Try with that turned off if possible.
Please do hardware test using *#546368#*930# , kindly check if wifi test returns passed.
