[Q] system apps using lesser ram - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First, you all guys are doing a great job here.
Well, my device Micromax A87, am facing ram problems. I don't wanna root my phone too
...
Is there any keyboard, launcher, and any system replacement app that uses lesser ram than the stock 2.3.5 apps?
Simple launcher(not one screen only types)
Simple keyboard ... all simple

Well, I found it myself. I downloaded ftl launcher lite which uses relatively less or maybe almost no ram. Cool, about 15 mb ram was cleared!!

Try original gingerbread launcher
(Also known as Launcher2). It takes maximum 7MB RAM. I wish I could attach it here, but I am using XDA app which doesn't have this feature.

The fact is I don't wanna root my phone as it still have warranty. FTL launcher lite uses almost no ram, very smooth to use.
BTW can you tell me if it is possible to flash a rom without rooting?

Lightest ROM?

Hey all, this is a straight forward one:
Out of all the ROM's you guys have used which one uses the least amount of RAM? Physical download size is not important.
A ROM that does not start These questions are asked for ages and its hard to tell.. i don't think anyone here can give you a good answer. Probably a stock rom uses the least amount of RAM.

I dont agree ...stock gb sucks up ram like anything
U should try stock lite v6 or miracle or any rom which is barebonez .....

Thanks for the quick replies guys, I only ask out of pure curiosity. Right now I'm running Cheetah V2 and I typically have around 100MB of free RAM for apps, just wanted to know if it got any better than that
Oh quick question again, anyone ever used the "auto memory manager" in ROM Toolbox? or any app similar to that, if you all did what settings did you use?

Why do you want free RAM? its a waste surely? Have a look at how android manages its memory then ask again...........

I run a lot of apps in the background i.e. custom launcher, tasker, ics keyboard etc. and It sometimes just bogs down and android goes all retarded and does not close some of the unused stuff, so hence my question about the lightest rom on memory, i'm just looking for that little extra.

ram is good almost 300 free !!
no one use miui ???
Well, I used to have it, but I didn't like the fact that it still was at 6.1.A.1.58 while the latest version was .2.45 at the time.
Otherwise, it was pretty good with awesome theme support, way more eye-candy than stock and battery friendly. In other ways, better than stock at everything rly.
Not to mention it's the only choice we have for those of us who dont want to unlock their bootloaders. It's also stock based which means, everything that runs on stock, runs on MIUI.
im using it

I've never liked miui. Most people buy xs because they like the Sony ui. I don't even run cm I like it so much.

i agree with u on this. its been 6 months since i bought XS the only custom rom i tried was MIUI and got back to stock in less an hour. Sony's UI is the only thing stopping me from flashing any other rom.
MIUI is a mem hog and it's based on single country's custom build .58 firmware :/
i am using miui from past one month and love it,some what is dont like the sony ui.
Its not all about the ui,, you can have xperia S theme so its not a problem

Another MIUI user over here!
Simply the best ROM available for Locked BL.
Maybe a bit more heavy on memory, but also much more Graphical and the user options are so much more that you forget about it.
I don't have any problems with performance/memory. And, when think could be related, simply went to Task Manager and clear all apps.
Every week updating new version, without any problems.
i'm using miui too.
perf: u can use init.d tweak to get better performance
theme: use xperia theme! heck, u can even use xperia launcher and still got the miui icons u've set
mem: see perf . it's a little bit takes more memory (diifer with every kernel too, xsx v6 seem takes less memory, but i use adv stock v14 anyway), but i havent experienced performance dropped.
fw: ok, it's based on 1.58. but anyone know what real difference between 2.45, 2.50 and 1.58? and if u have unlocked bootloader, u can flash kernel that based on fw 2.45 or 2.50
and you'll get the attractive themes (icons, status bars, drop down notification, lockscreen, etc), the free desktop theme is kinda cool too and get weekly OTA update (official miui)

Need more than 250mb ram on xperia u...

frnds.. i want something(rom or kernel or anyting) that will give me 250mb ram(if 250 not possible then anything that will give me as much ram as possible)
But i also want the battery..
help me frndssss
don't think 250 is possible with ICS on 512MB.
some roms claim 200, like Zperience or Aroma? but i haven't tried can't confirm. i think anything over 100mb free after finishing boot is good.
the way Android uses RAM though this is maybe misleading, free RAM by itself isn't really useful, but i know what you mean..

actually i just noticed on a brand new phone with sony official .54 ics installed, nothing removed:
200mb free RAM!
on first boot was 210mb, now is around 185mb on 3rd boot,
weird because i know after setting up apps and accounts etc, AND using Speedy Droid to remove lots of sony stuff, she had only about 50MB free, after a fresh boot. not sure why i have so much more now.

i know.
this phone is slow if you run many complex apps because 512MB is not enough for ICS (google target was 1GB).
free RAM after startup is still a rough guide to how much memory the base ROM is using. do you have a better suggestion?
the comment about 200mb on stock was because many 3rd party roms seem to think they've acheived something when they show 200mb free. i found this is almost same as stock.
I was answering OPs question: no, probably no fully functional ROM gives 250MB free after startup, but the stock .54 can give 200 ish before you install, configure or run anything. then you'll find you have very little free and things tend to get laggy.
if OP posted more specficially about his problem maybe someone can help further..

Free ram is wasted ram when it could be used to cache apps for faster loading, except when it drops to 0 and apps keep restarting.

[Q] Xperia u never works properly

Hey everyone,
I've been looking for a good rom for a while now, and everytime I find a rom which claims to be lag free, has a lot of free memory or other tweaks that may add on it's performance I try it out. Just to be dissapointed. I always have lag, My camera is never as fast as it should be, and 'out of the box' I always have memory problems.
I always follow the exact instructions as displayed, and never forget to wipe. So how come my phone never works as fast as it should?
Is the xperia U really that bad or am I just expecting too much from the devs?
Right now I am running Miui V5 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2482327) which claims to be lag free, stable and 185 mb free ram. I never have that much ram.
What is going wrong here?

I guess u should downgrade to GB or Latest Xperia u firmware b.1.100.And about the question u ask about ram I think u should delete some online apps that u don't use such as Google plus, Facebook,Twitter,Line,Viber,Skype...etc..etc(only that u don't use)

RAM usage depends on the firmware and ROM. Lower Android versions naturally use less RAM.
Which ROM is the lightest on RAM usage? No fancy features needed, just NO LAG

Cool. What about the newer ROMs?
I have tried many roms for our phone...
MIUI is great interface, but it slows down the phone (at least the rom I tested), so I changed to a 2.3.7 more stable rom.
I wonder if 4.4 will work ok on this phone... someone tried any 4.4 rom?
