[Q] So confused... - LG Optimus L9 P760, P765, P768, P769

Ok, so please forgive me for this. I'm used to Samsung devices, and rooting/custom recovery is as simple as "Download this, flash through Odin, Easy as pie".
So I have my brother's P769. He had rooted it, but was unsure how to install CWM on it. Me, being completely ignorant of unlocking the bootloader, was able to get CWM on it and flash CM10.2. Which, of course, gave me the LG Security Error. Been stuck for many a day trying to get back to V20F_00. It doesn't help that there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY to install the omap4 drivers in Windows 8.1, and reserving USB devices to Virtualbox is a pain in the (insert desired graphical descriptor here:_______).
So, I am just trying to clarify the steps to get my brother the CyanogenMod he so desires.
From Stock:
Root device
Unlock Bootloader
Install CWM
Flash CM from CWM
Is this a correct assumption?

Welcome JP,getting a break from the Blaze. I've had this beast for a week and I'm ready to crush the phone. So far I've been able to root and remove T-Mobile bloatware.
I've tried to unlock the boot loader many times and no luck. I've read thru the guides and the result is the same.
I sitting patiently to see if the devs can solve the mystery of the bootloader. I can't wait for the day so I can leave the stock Rom. Hope all is well

I've had this phone almost a year. As far as the unlocking bootloader goes, it seems like some p769s just aren't unlockable, no matter what method used. Mine is one of those. It may never be able to be unlocked. Just throwing that out there.
THIS link will show you the most common way to unlock the bootloader. It has simple directions and even a video. The only problem is that it doesn't work on some devices, such as mine, so just be wary. And many people in the thread have managed to get results by modifying the instructions, but others have not had any luck.
Good luck! Hope yours works

That's the link I found, and thought "There's no way it's that complicated!"
HTC uses a dev key. I don't remember Moto's method, but it was simple. Samsung is ridiculously simple. Why is LG so complicated? This has only re-enforced my idea of "Never get an LG"

This is the worst phone, as far as modding goes, I've ever seen. I haven't experienced many devices, but geez. Heck, hacking a SGS2 i777 with a faulty USB board was easier than this, and I couldn't even access recovery without ADB commands (because it thought a USB cable was plugged in even when it wasn't, was going to download mode) and couldn't enable ADB (because it thought a cable was plugged). I had to use SQLite hacks to force ADB to enable.
However, I've never let anything stop me before. I'm a world-champion Googler, and so I will crack this will probably take me a while, but meh.

[Q] I'm Convinced...

that CASUAL does not work. Oh wait, let me guess, I don't have the right (1 of how many different ones suggested) usb driver, right? And I'm not in ADB, right? And I haven't tried different cables, and ports, and CADI on its own, and zadig, and usbdeview, and pulling the battery when it stalls in download mode (when CASUAL was still recognizing the phone, now neither CASUAL nor ODIN connect to it)? Sorry for the sarcasm, but I'm incredibly frustrated here. How does "one click" turn into a week of trying and trying and trying, and not only not making progress, but seemingly moving backwards where now I can't even get programs to connect? Is there something less messy, contradictory (seriously, the dev thread says "stock anything" but when trying the battery pull and reboot it goes off on me: OMFG WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING? I WARNED YOU! YOU NEED TO ROOT FIRST.) way to unlock? Or a more concise thread of troubleshooting CASUAL (And please, I don't need a link to the same dev thread I just referenced, again.)?
Well I guess the rest of us that followed Adam's thread and were easily unlocked and loading ROMs daily are magicians or something?
Try a different USB port and a different computer. I could not get it to work at all on one PC in Windows or Linux, but it worked first try as soon as I tried it on my laptop.
Yes you caught us it was all a huge conspiracy to get you to brick your phone. The hundreds of people that have said they used the program where all in on it.

Dude, you weren't supposed to tell him!
Honestly if you can't run casual at this point, you shouldn't be doing it at all. I say this because when a "real" problem comes up you won't be equipped to handle it. Then you really will be SOL.

BINGO!!
Yea maybe try a different computer. I tried my laptop multiple times and it didn't work but once I did it on my surface pro it worked right away
definitely having the same problem, my solution: going to reinstall Windows 7 and see if that fixes my problems. if that doesn't then I'll just install a Linux distro on my computer and install java and see if i can get it to run that way. if anything I'll try it on another laptop running Windows xp or another till i get this **** to work. it honestly can't be that hard to unlock the note 2. maybe I'll try to root first and then try to unlock.. idk but i have faith in Adam and the other devs who've helped him and tested for him. I'll get it to work or die trying, because Verizon deserves that middle finger, big time.
anyway good luck on your journey!

Yep ive been through this to and finnally got it to work on my moms laptop. Our desktop is the only one I can use odin on and my moms laptop is the only one I can use casual on. When I have some spare time (or feel like it lol) im gonna try loading up a fresh install on windows 7 on 1 of my spare hard drives and see what happens from there. But for now im not really woried about it, just gonna roll with the flow.

I feel your pain but hang in there and keep trying. It took me 3 days and several hours to find the right combination that finally worked. If you follow the dev thread for a few days, you'll see that most everyone having problems eventually gets it to work through a combination of trial and error and support from the devs.
If you haven't already, try the driver suggestions in the last several pages of the dev thread. This seems to be helping quite a few others. Another thing to try is running the Casual jar file from an admin command prompt instead of double clicking the file. This worked for me.

I'm in the same boat as you. It doesn't seem like ANY website has any information on it yet... Maybe the phone is too new? Or, since it's a small, prepaid company (Literally only in about 5 states right now) the phone just isn't out there yet for any devs to play around with it. I'm trying to see if I can find a way to do it on my own, I've rooted a bunch of phones in the past (Mainly only HTC though, this is my first ever Samsung phone) and I'm really only good at following root instructions, not on figuring out how to actually root a device. So I'm with you there, hopefully there will be a way to root the Galaxy Amp someday. I love the phone, but I really want App2SD as the only issue I really have with the phone is the lack of internal app storage.
I've thought about trying other Samsung Galaxy devices rooting methods, but I am just skeptical if it'll brick the phone or not if I try rooting with a method designed for another phone. But then again, the if the phones are similar, I don't see why anything could go wrong, so it might be worth a shot.
Possible work around

I do agree they are very similar, but I wouldn't wanna brick my device if there's anything different between the devices. Though, the only difference I've really been able to find is the internal storage is lacking compared to the S3 mini, and the VGA front facing camera.. Still, I'll only try it if it won't brick the Galaxy AMP.

Same here as well. I Google for a rooting method for it at least twice a day, and nothing whatsoever. I really want to get it rooted so I can install apps on my SD card (I travel a lot, and use Sygic Navigation as my preferred GPS system, but the maps are flooding my lousy amount of internal storage. It seems to me that the few of us posting in this thread are the only people who have the Samsung Galaxy AMP. AIO does seem to be spreading across the nation now, they just got Service in Texas, and I think California is next, so maybe once it gets out there more, more devs can get their hands on the phone to find a method.
EDIT: Is there a universal way to unlock a bootloader on a Samsung device?? The HTC website will basically unlock any phone's bootloader. I used to have an HTC Rezound, and all I had to do was go to the development section of the HTC website, and unlocked my bootloader directly from the website. Samsung's website has no such thing on it.
Isn't there a way to do it through fastboot? Another phone I had, I literally just went into the comand prompt with Android-sdk, typed "fastboot oem unlock" and unlocked the bootloader that way... Is that possible to do on this Samsung Galaxy Amp?

Right now, for downloaded apps, I have Sygic navigation, Words With Friends, and Ubuntu One Could manager, and my internal memory is full. I honestly don't think there will be a rooting method any time soon, which really sucks. I want root so badly to be able to switch some apps over to my SD card so I can install more than these 3 apps. But, it just doesn't seem this phone is going to get the attention we need.
I just got this phone a couple months back and found this post...was wondering if anyone has found anything?

Hey I tried to root my galaxy amp as if it where a s3 mini but it didn't work. I have been checking the net for any forums but still nothing. Once if I find a way I will make sure to post in the forum.
Possibly a little help coming your way (HAVE NOT TESTED)...
A co-worker of mine got this phone through AIO for his girlfriend. He tried rooting and ended up soft bricking the phone (could still get into Download Mode). He sent the phone into AIO for a replacement BUT we were able to locate the PDA and CSC files for this phone. We HAVE NOT TESTED the 2 files, but i will post them from my MediaFire account. Flash w/ Odin or Heimdell (There are Numerous threads here on XDA if youre unsure how to do it, as it is the SAME procedure on all Galaxy phones). These files SHOULD work as intended, BUT i repeat ARE NOT TESTED.
EDITED: LINKS ARE UP!!
Link for the CSC.MD5 ==> http://www.mediafire.com/download/9...07ATTAMD1_1056913_REV00_user_low_ship.tar.md5

Glorious Success
THANK YOU!! I had soft-bricked my phone and just flashed these files with Odin 3.04 and it works perfectly. You do realize that you're probably the first person to post the MD5's for this phone for free on the internet? Not even Samsung has these files on their website. Truly, development for this phone can finally begin.
Also, even though the CSC is ATT, it works with Aio. Apparently, they use the same towers so it makes no difference.
Thanks, Rob.

I was able to root my amp with the kingoapp software above.
A couple of things before you run off and do it. First do some research on Google on the software. Even though no one has found anything definitive, there may be malware that comes with it. It definitely does send data to a server in China. I work in the IT department of a medium sized business so as extra precaution, I used a laptop that is waiting to be scrubbed and public wifi just to be safe. If you don't have that luxury you need to ask yourself if its worth it. The second thing is that you have to have the Samsung Kies software installed before the software can connect to your phone. Once that was done it took about 5 minutes for the software to find the correct exploit to get root. Anyway best of luck for everyone.
Unfortunately I got mine rooted too late to be a whole lot of value to me. I ended up buying an att branded Motorola Atrix HD off ebay so I could get a phone with 8 GB of internal memory that was easily rootable, with an unlockable bootloader, a useable recovery and a fairly active developer environment. So my amp is now an insurance policy when i mess up flashing a rom and don't want to be without a usable phone for an hour or so.
well if u had to install Samsung Kies then it means your phone driver is missing and i apologies for my inconvinence..

[Q] Well. My curiousity led to a hard-bricked phone

Well. My curiousty led to a hard-bricked phone
It's definetly official. I am not going to install any more custom roms after this. To make my story breif. I aquired a motorola atrix 2 phone, and had read it could accomdate a custom rom, so I used a one click root method program and the program said it had done its job. I booted into the recovery and installed the rom, which ended in an infinite reboot. Great, so I read more on how to revert back to firmware using rsd lite. I did this, but the battery was dead. so I went out and purchased anther battery, attempted the restore, phone restart, then BOOM. it stayed black and now it wont come on. wtf.
Can any please recommend the proper cable I have to order to get the phone back working>?

Thank you. But an experienced repair guy said my phone wasn't responding to neither the USB jtag or the fast boot. So my phone is dead forever? Should I start digging its grave?
Sure sounds this way, and you shouldn't be doing JTAG through the USB port anyway unless your phone is something special I've never heard of
But in truth rooting your phone won't damage it, it just gives someone the opportunity to do so. I'm a firm believer in rooting all androids so long as they read and understand what they are doing, its very hard to brick a phone if you know what you're doing
So although this phone may be dead forever (unless you find someone who for sure knows the proper way to JTAG it) then still consider rooting your next one, just be sure to completely understand what's going on, and try to stay away from one click roots, its hard to learn anything from this
Best of luck on your next phone
*side note, if you still have warranty and your phone is completely unresponsive chances are you will get your warranty exchange, just play dumb and say "I was playing angry birds and it just froze, now it won't turn on"

I wish I had warranty on this thing. I got it second hand from craigslist. However i've managed to acquire an HTC inspire 4G, what an upgrade from a motorola cliq xt! I would love to install jelly bean on this thing but after messing up the Atrix 2 i'm scared I will F*ck this one up too. I can never find clear and concise instructions on the internet. Every web page I visit, it seems to be someones personal way of doing it. Steps not mentioned, or instructions written for intermediate users. For example, Every video or piece of instruction i've watched on youtube regarding booting into the fast boot on the atrix 2, said something about holding volume up and power button upon booting and I would see something on the top of the screen. However that did not work, First I had to use the volume down and power button, then I would get to this fastboot screen where those recovery options werent available, from there I had to hold both volume buttons down and press the power button twice which would bring me to the recovery options screen. thats just one example, and even then for some reasons I didn't have all the recovery options the instructions spoke of... for example. Very annoying and frustrating. On a side note, is there anyone on this site who lives in the US that can unbrick my atrix 2? The guy who repair phones I took it to said theres a device for 250.00 bucks he's waiting to get that can unbrick any device. However he doesnt have the funds and had gotten laid off work. I am just having a hard time believing a simple soft user error could permanently damage my device forever and that as sophiscated as our technology has gotten there's absolutely no way to revive it.

I can't attest to the videos you saw, but for most androids this is the best site with the most info, I only suggest being sure how to root before you do it, and to understand how the method works as well. When your not understanding this is when bricks happen.
I know it can be lots of reading and lots of questions but in the long run its worth the time
As for the JTAG equipment there are many who have it and you can easily spend less than 250 on getting the proper stuff.
Every logicboard is different so maybe this machine he speaks of has a wide variety of cables that come with it, but he's still paying too much
Anyway, most people seem to charge 50$ or so to JTAG it back, if that's more than the phone is worth to you just sell it on eBay for parts

Can you link me to clear and concise instructions on how to upgrade my 2.3.7 ( i think) to jellybean on an htc inspire 4g? and is there anyone here who can fix my phone that you know of?
HERE IS YOUR PHONES FORUM
you will find links to all the guides you need here, always read the stickies in each section, this tends to have the important info you need
then anything your not sure about should be asked in the proper place within this forum for the best answers
example, question on how to root should be asked in the how to root thread for best chance of a good answer, question on how to flash a new radio should be asked in a thread pertaining to this
im sorry but i dont know enough about your phone specificly to help further but hopefully the members in your device specific forum will
best of luck!

[Q] Cannot get fastboot to work

Hi all! I could use a little help if ya'll don't mind. I'm new to the Amaze but not at all to Android.
I found an Amaze 4g on eBay for $65 that was in pretty good shape with one glaring problem: it wasn't fully functional. The seller explained that it would bootloop after hitting the HTC screen and, knowing what I know about Android, it sounded to me like this should be pretty simple to fix. And if I'm absolutely wrong, then I should be able to sell it for parts (perfect screen on it) to get some of my money back!
Well, it came in and sure enough, it bootlooped at the HTC screen and it was still S-On (yay for hoping nobody trashed its internals too hard!). So I slapped a factory image on the SD Card, loaded it up, and after a slow first boot I heard the T-Mobile jingle! Yay, all is good! Or so I thought...
On stock software, all is good. Everything functions as it should. And if I wanted to leave it stock, I would have never noticed a problem. However, when I went to go unlock it, that's when I began to run into problems. For the life of me, no matter what I do, I absolutely cannot get fastboot to work! ADB works great! I've transferred quite a bit over USB so the port itself seems fine. I've loaded up drivers (started out with universals, then went to HTC, then went to the toolkit stickied at the top of the forums here) and no matter what I use, it simply will not work. I can ADB to it all day, but I just cannot use fastboot.
Just going with the assumption that maybe I had bad/dirty/whatever drivers/conflicts, I actually installed Windows 7 64-bit from scratch, loaded up Windows Updates, and then ran the all-in-one toolkit (which takes care of drivers for me) and alas, absolutely nothing different. ADB works great but I can't get any response from fastboot with the device.
Have I done something wrong/dumb here? Is there something special about this device that could allow something required for fastboot to not work (damaged USB port in a special way) that would allow all other USB operations to function?
Thanks in advance, friends!

Hi,
I think that a USB port may be broken, but that would require soldering another USB port on it, so it might not be worth it.
Did you already try a RUU? If it's a software issue you may be in luck since RUU's fix those 90% of the time!

As I said, I recovered the soft-brick with an RUU. So getting to stock is fine, but I don't want to stay stock.
Are you saying it's possible that the USB port is broken even though ADB works perfectly and I can transfer a couple GB of data over it successfully?

Well that's just a guess... lol
It's probably not a USB problem then.
Yeah, unless there's something different about the Amaze compared to most other Android phones, I don't think this is a USB problem although it acts like it is. I'm really baffled on this. :-/

Well good luck, but you at least got it on a stock ROM working fine. You could sell it and make a profit this time!
It could possibly be a hardware issue, but IDK.
What are you trying to fastboot? Make sure your in the correct window I mean you have to be in bootloader.. I forget it almost every time also if adb works it has to work.. Try the correct jbear hboot and see cuz if I'm right jbear hboot are fastboot enable or something like that

Simply running "fastboot devices" is my litmus test - I'm unable to get it to actually see the device. And yes, I have it booted into the bootloader and I have put it into fastboot mode.
@ Jaxidian
i m not an expert ! just giving advice
May be m completely wrong, just trying to help
have u tried in ubuntu ?
Check your fastboot script?

So if you hook the phone up to the computer and at a command prompt type, "adb devices" it returns your device serial number; but, if you then type, "adb reboot recovery" and are then in the bootloader fastboot and type, "fastboot devices" it doesn't return the device serial number?

[Q] P769 still unlockable (bootloader)?

Ok i hate being "that guy" who has to ask this(especially since i'm an rc), but i have been sifting through threads for the last few hours trying to determine can my p769 still be unlocked? The tutorials i read didn't specify that it was meant for jellybean as far as i saw. It came with ics, and as soon as i hooked it up to my wifi it decided to download the ota and install jellybean. So now i'm stuck trying to figure if the previous process still works because it seems to me like it just flashes and older version of the os, and i thought at the same time it was flashing a older bootloader from a p760 from the kdz file, but at this point i'm lost. Kinda sad since i'm from a community in xda with weird setups as it is. I read the bootloader is being worked on for 2nd init on this phone, i'm assuming thats basically what my kindle fire hd has that we call second bootloader. Anyways is my device's bootloader still unlockable?

Merp. As you read in the threads, not a lot of people have had success in unlocking the bootloader and I received an email from lg saying it is permanently locked (rolls eyes). We just need the right dev to figure a way to unlock the boot loader....

ah thanks, i'm going to have to get used to the style of native flashing that this phone uses, i'm used to being able to offload a img made with dd and reflash it from fastboot, the kdz file's are a bit new to me. Also thought i'd ask another question while i'm at it, that 30 minute wait they say i need to fix the radio on first to recieve a token, is that nessassary in the sense that i don't have a data plan so can i just use my wifi?

ah wonderful... my mom still pays my mobile bill and said until she gets a non-legacy phone, she's not getting us a data plan. Her current phone's my old sgh-x495 if i remember correctly. Pre-smartphone... Guess i will just settle with root for now until she gets a data plan. Who knows, by then there might be a bootloader unlock fix. Thanks for the help, hopefully i can contribute to this community in time like i have the kindle community, not that i was one of the major players or anything.

You only need mobile data for 30-40 minutes so maybe you can borrow a friends metro or t-mo sim for that time period.
