Hi Guys, I have looked high and low but cannot seem to find a definitive answer so to what to do.
Basically I have a Samsung S3 which about 5 months ago I rooted to enable me to use any network. Basically O2 who I used to have a contract with messed up somehow and on their records they could not find a IMEI number and so couldn't unlock, I was going round in circles and as I was moving abroad I had no other option.
Everything went fine and it is only now that I would like to update the OS to its latest version that when I go to the settings and update it says something about having a modified firmware (I think, another story altogether but I now broke the screen and so waiting for a replacement to fix it).
My questions are:
Will I ever be able to update normally via the settings menu again?
What is the latest stable Android update that I could use? KitKat?
Where is the best place to source the most recent Android distributions?
Basically I am just looking for a bit of advice on how to go about keeping my phone up to date with the latest features. I am not really interested in adding hacked functionality etc at this point.

If you unlocked your phone using the 'free' methods then updating to the latest rom will return the network lock or corrupt your efs folder, depending on how the unlock was achieved.
You can't use ota updates as you've modified your phone.
Sammobile is where you obtain the latest rom.
Also, questions go the q&a forum and all the above information is posted many times.

As said, you wont get any updates via OTA if your phone is rooted,
Go to Sammobile.com, find the latest UK / Europe (BTU) generic rom it will be the version ending MJ9.
Download Odin and Guide here
Flash the rom using Odin, doing this will remove root access, once you have installed the rom, enter recovery mode and clear Cache / Dalvik Cache then factory reset (be aware this will wipe your phone and internal storage so copy any files to your PC first)
Boot the phone and set it up, then go to software updates on your phone and update the MJ9 version to MK6,
Now your phone will be fully stock and get OTA updates in the future plus you will have the generic UK and Europe firmware version (BTU) Android 4.3.

Does anyone know or hazard a guess when next official jellybean release may be? Do they run on development cycles, or is this more an advice patch?
Any ideas on if update coming soon that is good idea to flash with?
Also if I install a new ROM I know everything is wiped, is there a way I can back up all my whatsapp convocations etc? Or will I need to install all the apps a fresh? Ie can I restore the phone as is now or will it be a case of each app installed from scratch?

Go to the sammmobile link in the previous post I suggested to you and download the UK (BTU) MK6 firmware, there is nothing wrong with that version, if you are already on a stock rom just flash this no need to do any factory resets, wipes.etc

If you are on a stock rom then flash the rom mentioned above it will not affect any of your apps they will still work the same unless you have root dependant app but then simply root your phone again using CF-Auto Root in my signature.
The times you have problems is when you have custom roms then going to a different custom rom or back to a stock rom, in these cases you need to do a full wipe and factory reset so you loose all data unless you have back it up.

Factory reset will not wipe the internal sd card. So if u back up whatsapp conversations without ext sd card, factory reset will not wipe it.

Thanks for that, I am downloading that ROM now.
When you say stock ROM, I did not go to a custom one but I did root my phone to allow it to be region free. I still get the O2 splash screen etc, so is it safe to say it is still stock and I can simply flash the new ROM without a factory reset?

Yes, my phone was Stock o2 when I got it in May 2012, first thing I did was flash the Generic BTU firmware to get rid on o2 stuff, I have never had to do a Factory reset nor wipe Cache, Dalvik Cache on my phone, it has always been rooted and apart for the MJ9 issues that Samsung had late last year it has worked fine, no lag, no random reboots, no freezing.
If you don't root you will get OTA updates, if you root you wont but you can still use Kies or Sammobile to update to any latest version releases, the factory reset will wipe pictures, music and your app data from your internal storage so if you back them up to your PC before a Factory reset you can replace them afterwards, but if you have not had any custom roms on your phone the need for a factory reset would be highly unlikely.
That's great, all went well today with the MK6 update listed above. I now see there is a MK7 update for jellybean from Israel. Worth going to this?

Choice on that is yours really.
Just because there is a higher number version doesn’t mean its an update from what you have unless it is based on the same version (eg BTU) if you have BTU MK6 and there was a BTU MK7 then that is an upgrade.
Where Isreal has MK7, India has ML4 this generally relates to how long and how many attempts they have in getting that country specific version ready for release, not an upgraded version of MK6.
You need to ensure that the rom you do install has multi CSC’s otherwise you could end up with no network signal or data.

i bought a Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 about two months ago, it's a Spanish device. I think the device came with 4.0.1 update of ICS, some weeks after buying it got 4.0.4 update and then using CF-Root 6.4 and Odin 1.85 managed to get root access so i was able to install busybox and UMS application from xda forums. So everything was working fine. Then, about 3 days ago i got an update notification which showed me a message which said "Updates will be provided in the request order preference" or something like this, i tried to update a few times more but no luck, i always got the same messages so i thought i had to wait for 4.1 update to get published but anyway everything was working fine.
The curious thing is yesterday ( August 25, 2012), when i woke up i noticed a firmware update was ready to be installed so went through it (without uninstalling CF-Root 6.4, supersu, etc.) but the strange thing was, after the update completed fine, went to settings to check the version and i saw it still/again was 4.0.4 version of ICS. Also noticed Google Play Books and Google Play Movies got installed so on one hand it seemed everything went fine cause new apps were there and everything worked as expected but on the other hand i think i already had 4.0.4 update installed on the device. Till that point one can think i got confused on the versions i got installed before the update and no major problem here. After that, as i already had root access on the device, i went to check if i still could run UMS app but it complained about missing root access so as i did before that last Android update took CF-Root 6.4 and Odin 1.85 to flash the device and get root access again (Without removing any previous install of CF-Root, super su, busybox, etc. ) but had no luck, so now it's not possible for me get root access again but i'm also still wondering how is it possible that today's update left the phone with the same Android version as before the update.
The only explanation i can find is the phone came with 4.0 version, first update got me to 4.0.1 and today's update guided me to the 4.0.4 but i'm still wondering why root access is not working as it should.
So my questions are, did i got confused about each version update? Then why can't i get root access again just repeating the same first process?
When opening busybox i can read "Not Enough Free Space in /system". Opening /system directory with Root Explorer i can read 1.05GB used, 436.39MB free. Is it right /system directory takes up to 1GB of the space? Why Busybox thinks there is 0.0MB free there?

Thousands of posts say OTA updates may fail if the phone is rooted .
Usual is to fail part way through an update ..
Suggest wipe the phone flash stock rom with Odin then root .

i'm looking for a stock firmware for my SGS3 BaseBand I9300XXLH1 but i'm not able to find it. I think the firmware which came with my phone is unbranded and from Spain. Get your firmware from here http://www.samfirmware.com/
then use odin to flash it, I had the same problem
Baseband is modem not firmware.

Thanks to both for your answers. Maybe it's stupid but i'm some what more peaceful knowing other people also happened the same issue although it still feels very weird. All i did is flashing with CF-Root 6.4.
I've been looking for the stock firmware which is supposed to came with my phone at sammobile site but i'm not able to find it, although at that point ( where the phone got the same update twice, 4.0.4 ) i don't think i can trust the information provided by the phone. Under phone settings i can see Model Number is GT-l9300 and Base Band Version is i9300XXLH1 but i can't find it no sammobile site. What i find at sammobile site is I9300XXBLH1 ( notice B letter ) but i think that before this weird behaviour happened the phone showed Base Band Version I9300XXBLFB.
Is it all possible or the weird one is me?

REPEAT BASEBAND IS NOT FIRMWARE nor is it firmware version .
To locate firmware try CHECKFUS .

0. Remove all root apps from your phone.
1. Back up your rooted rom in cWM.
2. Use triangle away to get rid of the traingle.
3. Format system and cache.
4. Flash an official rom.
5. You should have all your apps + settings on a stock rom without the status being 'modified'.

I've used checkfus and now i know my firmware.
Thanks for the step by step tips, but my phone is not rooted so i cannot use cwm, triangleapp and so. I. Annot also remove cwm manager nor supersu. I suppose i'll have to flash stock firmware first of all. Am i right?
Pretty strange, first time i rooted the device through cf-root6.4 it run flawlessly, but now i had to remove the battery after flashing ( while device was on ) and enter into recovery mode by hand which started the rooting process.

I unrooted my SGS3 yesterday using the following tutorial:

After the unrooting process using Odin, and resetting the flash counter, I had my stock S3 back (ICS 4.0.4). However, when I searched for an OTA update, none showed up. I connected my phone to Kies and there it also said I had the latest firmware installed. I'm from Belgium and all S3's here received the 4.1.2 OTA recently, so I wonder why my device doesn't qualify?
My current baseband is I9300XXLF5, which is indeed for Belgium. So what did I do wrong? I would prefer not to just flash an update with Odin, because I'm curious about this issue, and I would like to enjoy OTA's again...

An extra important piece of information might be that before I rooted, I was running JB, which I got in an OTA. So it must be possible to get this to work
Reroot
Run triangle away to reset flash counters
And then use Mobile Odin to wipe data
Then check OTA update....

K Thans, I'll try this right away. I found also that, and I don't know if this is relevant, I get a lot of FC's from com.google.process.gapps while browsing or streaming. I found an easy fix online (enabling download manager in applications) but that didn't work (it already was enabled)

Didn't work I get the same "No update available" while my android version is still 4.0.4. So the steps I took were:
- Root the phone with Odin
- Reset flash counter using TriangleAway
- Wipe data, cache and dalvik cache using Mobile Odin Pro
- While still rooted, checked for OTA

Need to unroot. You won't be able to get OTAs or Kies updates if your device status is modified. Check that's okay and factory reset if it still says modified after unrooting, make sure your firmware versions and csc match ones for belgium and you should be good to go.

First question is does your device have an update or are you guessing it has .
That is your phone not other phones
Update via Kies is the simple method .

Yeah I tried that already, that's the strange thing. My CSC reads "PRO", which is indeed Belgium, and my firmware reads "XX" which is also correct. My device status read "Normal". Everything was in order so it should've worked... So I have no idea why it didn't.

Yes my device should have an update. Before I ever started my first rooting process, I had the JB update (which I received OTA) already. I don't understand why things would be different now. I bought my phone here in Belgium and my firmware and CSC are also Belgian currently...
To clarify: my unrooted, completely wiped S3 doesn't get the JB update I got before I rooted my S3.

Simple answer is you no longer have the correct HDSWVER codes showing to the firmware server or their is no firmware for your phone on the server .

EDIT:
I finally got tired of all it and downloaded the 4.1.2 version from Luxembourg, which should be the same as the Belgian version. Everything works smoothly. No idea if the OTA works though, but at least I can enjoy the latest firmware version.

Because triangle away can reset your flash counter only if you're running stock recovery, stock kernel, stock rom etc.
CF-AutoRoot should not make your status "modified" but probably like you see it did. Maybe some other apps did that, maybe not, nobody knows anyway. If you really need these updates then you should flash newest firmware from samsung through odin and then root it + reset flash counter, it should work also for further updates (but I'm not sure).

I know where to get the FW updates to flash via Odin but don't really understand how to reset the flash counter if not by using TriangleAway.
Could you please be kind enough to guide me?

Could any of these apps modify the stock kernel, rom or recovery? Coz I never flashed any custom ones just rooted using CF-Auto-Root and installed the root apps
P.S: I was able to do the FW update via Kies and now the status is back to normal, but I'm afraid to root coz the status might go back to modified.
It's more like, you know. If we're talking about warranty then they'll find that your rooted your phone anyway. If we're talking about updates then probably it's still better to keep an eye on some stock-based custom roms, mostly because of frequent updates (nearly instantly after new baseband), while you still need to wait some time for OTA to arrive. Of course it's much easier to apply OTA than whole custom rom but hey, how often are you doing that?
About your question - busybox is my choice because it modifies /system apps, many of them.
And lastly - in odin you have a checkbox to reset flash counter, so you don't need to worry about anything using this tool. At least in general.
Overall I'd stick with pure stock non-rooted firmware if you don't need it in general or rooted custom rom (f.e. mine ) for much better experience. I couldn't go back to stock after getting used to much better performance, less battery drain etc.

In Odin are you referring to the option F. Reset time??
I am using the Odin version provided by Chainfire in his S3 rooting thread in which all options are disabled except for Auto reboot.
@JJEgan I don't even know how to use half of the apps I mentioned, I only installed them as my friend suggested it as must have root apps.
As you might see, I am still a N00b at this and am in the learning process.

I suggest going through my flashing guide located in ArchiDroid thread, with newest odin and newest methods for flashing/rooting.

If I'm not mistaken, ArchiDroid is a Custom ROM(pre-rooted) which requires a Custom Recovery.
I will be learning a bit more first before I install a Custom ROM.
A question though. Will I have to take a backup of my app data if I decide to install a custom ROM?
Also if I want to install the stock FW via Odin, will I have to take a backup first?

Yes it requires custom recovery for installing .zip package.
There is nothing to learn if you ask me, you have complete guide for installing everything you need in step-by-step howto. If you want to keep your data then you need to use some nice app for that f.e. Titanium Backup but for that you need root and... yeah. It's easier to start from scratch on new pre-rooted rom.
I'd suggest flashing custom recovery (tutorial in my topic) and then you can create a backup directly from that, with everything you want to, including actual system, efs folder, recovery, kernel etc. So you can easily get back to original rom whenever you want to. Keep in mind that you still need custom recovery for that.

Ok Now I'm really confused
I still haven't learnt how to use Titanium Backup to backup, or how to do a nandroid backup. I have read it's better to do a backup b4 installing a custom ROM. And if I'm not mistaken, I need ROOT to do a nandroid backup too.
As I said before that I used CF-Auto-Root, I just followed the instructions to the word.
I had tried doing a ADB backup before root, but for some reason it kept exiting(I guess coz I have just about 1GB memory left on my Internal memory SD card)

EDIT: Just did the CF-Auto_Root again and didn't install any other apps like busybox(uninstalled all root apps) and used triangleaway to reset the flash counter. But the counter still stuck on 1
The device status shows normal though.

First of all you need custom recovery to perform nandroid backups. So you can stick with my first 10 steps in my howto. After that enter recovery, enter backup section and make a custom backup (or default, doesn't matter) of everything you have, especially /efs folder as it's really important. When you finish doing backup then boot to your normal system and copy these backups to your PC. Now you're sure that they won't disappear and if you want to backup your phone from that then simply put them back on your phone and restore them from the recovery.
But overall I'd suggest clean start without these backups. Of course it's always recommended and I recommend it as well but as long as you won't want to go back to original rom, there is no real point for backing it up. You can always download latest official firmware and flash it through odin.

I have a rooted Galaxy S3 and 6 months ago I wanted to flash custom roms. I've read a lot about it and thought I couldn't do anything wrong anymore, so I made a nandroid backup (to switch roms when I wanted to).
Now here comes the noob part I didn't read about or I've looked over, my stock rom was android version 4.1.2, and the new rom was 4.2, when I wanted to go back to stock I softbricked my Galaxy s3, it was stuck in a bootloop.
I managed to get into Clockwerk Recovery and fix it, though I don't remember how I did it. I ended up with a factory resetted stock rom, but I was happy everything worked again!
So everything was okay and now that a new update will be available, I wanted to check if the update was available in my country yet, but my phone said that it wouldn't update because my phone is customized, so I checked in download mode and it says flash count 1, custom binary and custom system storage.
Is there a way I can get my updates again without factory resetting my phone again or without flashing the stock rom again?
I would like my phone how it is now with all its data, but just be able to get the official updates.
Oh and I freezed some system apps and bloatware with app quarantine, maybe that's important too.

No, you can't get official ota updates unless your phone is unmodified, yours is very much modified.
If you want to go back to full stock, unroot and remove flash count then there are guides in general forum, stickies. You'll lose all your data in the process.
Instead just flash the 4.3 stock rom using odin, you might not even need to factory reset doing this. Follow the guides again, back up your efs first.

you must be rooted first and make the flash counter 0. use triangle away for that. would be better to follow some guides available here at xda..

just by flashing 4.3 stock firmware from odin wont work, he will need to factory reset, else he may be stuck in boot loop..
Okay so if I understand correctly: I can't get the official updates directly from samsung, unless I factory reset + flash stock rom again (because now I'm also on stock but download mode says custom) + triangle away + unroot?
Now all I want is the official stock rom 4.3 of the Galaxy S3 + root (doesn't matter if it's done via odin), without losing what I have now.
Is this possible to do in any way?
I would think of
1. making a full nandroid backup
2. titanium backup
3. flash 4.3 rom + root
4. restore via titanium backup
will this work for what I want as a result?
I will read some guides too if I know that this is the way to go, I just want to be sure of everything before I do anything, I don't want to screw things up like last time..
And can I choose what 4.3 I download? (European or even more specific like Belgium in my case?)

okay so I've read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2362743 and there was a lot I already know (I'm not that new to rooting and stuff like that) but I didn't know the radio part yet, this gives me even more questions.
If I flash stock 4.3, will I have to flash a radio of my region too or won't the radio be effected by the rom flash?
I'm just confused now.. can somebody just help me with my questions? I'm not new to the forums I just never made an account, I've read many threads on here, watched videos, ect.

I would also do some reading up on the new 4.3 update whether you would want to upgrade to it or not when you fix the update problem because at the moment there are a few issues with it! All though that will change when bug fixes are released in the future but at the moment it has problems.

Depends upon what region modem is in the firmware .

I have an unrooted Galaxy S3 (GT-I9300, Android 4.1.2) that I would like to factory reset, but I have a few questions and would really appreciate some info.
1. Backup apps: I would like to backup my apps and I know to do this I need to root and use Titanium Backup (or similar software). I have experience of this from an HTC phone a while ago, but is it the case that I can root the S3 without losing my app data? I have read conflicting information on this over the years.
2. Avoid upgrade: So far I have been avoiding Samsung's repeated attempts to upgrade my S3 to the latest version of Android due to poor reviews of it running on this phone. If I root, save app data, then factory reset, will returning to stock automatically update to the latest version? Or the version the phone was originally installed with? Is therefore the best option to go with ROM that is a clone of the 4.1.2 stock? (I'm not keen on a custom ROM due to issues I had with the "best available" ROM on my HTC phone - video camera not working, issue changing ringtone, etc).
3. Returning to stock: If I DO wish to return to stock, regardless of the Android upgrade, is this easy enough to do? Is it through Samsung Kies?
To summarise, I want to factory reset my phone while saving app data but avoiding the latest Android update on this phone (to begin with at least).

You have confused yourself, factory reset will only wipe the data from your current firmware -it will not update anything.
CF auto root (recommended) itself will not wipe anything, provided you follow the instructions exactly.
To be frank you are better off with the latest 4.3 firmware, even stock 4.3 once you freeze all the bloatware. 4.1 sucks in comparison, the only reason to stay on 4.1 is if your efs has been damaged and now can't be updated to efs v2.
Only follow the guides in general forum, sticky threads.

In that case I think I will probably upgrade to 4.3 to check if it resolves any of my issues, then if not I will CF auto root, backup my apps/data, factory reset and avoid the update to 4.3. Does this sound like a reasonable course of action?
I have heard a lot of criticism about 4.3 on this device which is why I want to avoid it - do you (or anyone) know if these issues still exist?
