EFS 2.0 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The 4.3 firmware have efs 2.0 i guess...
I am on 4.1.2 and that has efs 1.0. Is there anything that I need to worry about when updating the firmware over kies?

If you haven't read about the changes it brings then yes, you may needed to worry.

Just don't forget to backup your efs before you upgrade and you'll be alright.

Network Not Registered on Stock or other ROMs besides Android Revolution HD

Good day.
I was going back & forth from Stock & SuperNexus 2.0 just fine. Then I tried Android Revolution ROM, and now my problem is everytime I flash Stock or any other ROM, I can't text or call. The signal bar is fine. It's just that I can only make Emergency calls and it says Network Not Registered. But if I flash back Android Revolution, it's fine again. I've tried the clean routine (Factory Reset/Wipe Cash/Wipe Dalvik), still no luck.
Anyone encountered this before or any solution/suggestions?
Thank you.

is your imei intact? does it match what is under your battery? how about serial number? did you flash a rom with an mg4 or mg2 baseband? do you have a backup of your efs folder? read these before flashing anything further http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2393289 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2377731
good luck!
Thank you for the reply. Im guessing that's what happened. But I will try to determine if my IMEI changed, so is my efs.
I hope there's a workaround and its reversible.
Thank you again.

if you did not back up your efs folder and if your imei has changed than most likely you flashed a newer baseband from mg4 mg5 or mg6 roms . and then reverted to an older baseband which can no longer read your efs folder. some people have been able to fix the problem by flashing once again an mg4 or mg5 or mg6 rom. perhaps doing this will allow you to regain your network connection and efs folder.
I checked. My IMEI and SERIAL Numbers are still the same with what's written on the back of my phone.
I've also confirmed on the Android Revolution HD 29 thread that it doesn't change the efs.
Any other ideas guys?
Thank you.

android revolution 29 modifies the efs folder so that it cant be used by older modems. it uses the mg4 baseband. since your imei is intact i am guessing that you are either back on android revolution or a rom that uses either mg4 or mg2 baseband as those are the only basebands that will work with the modified efs folder. if you still have no network but imei abd serial number are intact then check your apn settings to see if they are correct and compatible with your carrier

Android Revolution HD 29.0
--- release date: 31 July 2013 ---
•Based on latest official Samsung 9300XXEMG4 firmware
•Other minor changes and fixes
•Included and updated custom components:
I see. Yes, I am on AR29 right now since it's the only ROM I have that's has a working cellular network.
I made a recovery (cwm) backup when I was on SuperNexus, which I had no network problem with.
1) Can I extract my efs from there & flash that? Or...
2) Can I try and restore that backup without any major problems?
My ultimate goal really is to go back to my Stock ROM.
Btw, thank you so much for your patience Sir.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
cwm does not backup efs . for efs backup use hc-ktool from play market and efs pro. make backups and leave them on your ext sd card as well as your computer. you can flash any stock firmware from sammobile.com as long as the rom is in the "G" series. for example mg4 or mg5 or mg6. any rom from a-f will not read the efs as they all use older basebands. basically you cannot go backwards.there are many roms now that use mg basebands if you cant find one that matches the csc for your country than try any other firmware as long as it is a G rom or higher.
Very educational Sir.
Thank you again for your help.
It's much appreciated.
Good day.

you are welcome . good day to you!
I too use supernexus and stock. Also had this issue. You can still use any rom , you just have to flash a mg4 onwards baseband. For example, you can be on the supernexus ROM with mg4 baseband and you can make calls as usual.

No. I guess I'll just have to find ROMS with mg4 onwards. Stock or otherwise.

flash a stock f/w XXEMG4 or later via odin and then root it. then flash any custom rom via recovery(CWM touch or PHILZ). the custom rom(any AOSP rom)continues to use the same modem you have on the stock f/w.
:good:
Thanks I'll try to do it

[Q] Quesiton about MG4 baseband

I recently flashed MG4 base-band and didn't backup my EFS direction.
I know that MG4 and MG2 changes the EFS partition and it messes up your IMEI code.
So how do I get rid of that "locking" that stops me from flashing other basebands?
I'm currently on MD3 PHONE and MG4 baseband.
Would the backup of current EFS with HC-kTool help when I flash other baseband and restore the efs.img?
Its actually the rom not the baseband that changes efs
No backup, no going back

So basically If I backup now when I'm in MG4 baseband the backup won't work if I switch to another ROM with different baseband?
The backup will work as a backup of "now". The backup cannot revert you to a "before now" state. Backups only take you back to the moment when the backup was taken. Not before

I mean if I flash another baseband and restore the backup that I did now, will my IMEI reset ?
I don't understand the question. Why would you restore the backup?
You can't use any baseband older than mg2. End of story

Galaxy S3 accelerometer and magnetic sensor not working

Hi, this two sensors just stopped working after update to 4.3. I've tried installing custom rom but still nothing. All my other sensors are working fine but theese two aren't giving me any data. Any help?
Factory reset and flash full stock rom with odin. If still the same then you have a hardware fault.

I've tried that but still not working. Do I need to downgrade to 4.1.2?
I don't think it will make any difference, but won't harm to check. Make sure you use an efs v2 4.1 firmware.

Now you lost me. What is efs v2 4.1 firmware?
Firmware EMG4 and later all require efs v2 format for the IMEI number to be read, by updating to 4.3 you now have v2 and cannot use a firmware earlier than EMG4, otherwise your efs (and IMEI) will be corrupted.

its not corrupted because everything is fine in JB 4.1.2 And I tried to use another modem and kernel in 4.3 but it didn't work
I get that update but when i update something happens if i backup my efs then if i restore would it work.
If you don't like the answer then fix it yourself, best of luck.
Dude your answer is not good, its not my fault

Do you know if your s3 ever had imei issues, got unlocked through means other than imei code, or did you ever used patched modem (or ariza)?
If yes, stay on 4.1.2, or do as adviced and get a patched modem and kernel for 4.3.
Your efs might be damaged, to stay on the safe side, backup everything before attempting to upgrade or patch stuff.
Ok thanks so do you mean by downloading another modem for my 4.3

I see can be big problem. Is can´t be downgraded with same modem or bootloader as have 4.1.2?
Flashing a 4.1 firmware should not corrupt efs, but only if you use EMG4 or later firmware. Anything earlier will not work.
Flash the full firmware with Odin, then factory reset. Backup your efs first.

Anyway can i downgrade it all the way back to 4.04, with odin (i have the firmware package downloaded from sammobile)?
Or is 4.1 the lowest i can go?
Thanks
If you go below 4.1 version EMG4 then you will lose your imei, also risk sds.

Oh. Bummer.
I actually seem to have just the 4.1 EMG4 installed now.
And of course no backup of 4.04 EFS.
So thats that then :/
(wanted to get back to 4.04 because it had T9 on/off button and "add word" option.
4.04 would kill your phone, not worth it for a keyboard.
