So I have seen numerous threads here on how to install a ROM to upgrade to 4.1.2, but I am not sure how to begin if my phone is already running that software. How would I root the phone?
Use Matt's utility.

I'm pretty experienced with unlocking Winmo 6.5 phones and running android non natively on them. But I've only had a Droid since Christmas and am not too experienced with these. I had rooted my phone to enable Wifi tethering but the new 2.3.6 has disabled my ability to root the phone. I understand that I may need to install a previous version of Droid and then do something before installing 2.3.6 but I keep reading about Nexus and OTA and have no idea what these are. So can someone walk me through this?
Absolutely! You more than likely need to restore back to a prev version using a fastboot file if you can't root 2.3.6. You have 2 options:
1 - Root the fastboot, use Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper to preserve root
2 - Use the root for 2.3.6 that is available.
Either way, feel free to PM me if you need a step by step. I've fastbooted 3 times now to try out different methods of restoring root.
If you have an xt912, didn't say in OP, I know that this works without fastbooting back to 2.3.5.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1492708
And if for some reason you wanted to unroot then doomlords unroot method still works.

The new motofail root method will root 2.3.6 directly with out having to use rootkeeper.

Lot's of terms here that I don't understand. "Root the fastboot", "Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper", "PM", "Fastboot".
I would need a step by step, thanks.

Lot's of crazy terms here. xt912? OP? Who is doomlord? Did he create the DroidRazrRoot program that I had used before?
When in doubt, google. Having come from a WinMo background as I did, you should be familiar with that.
XT910 & XT912 are the model numbers for the two RAZR variants, GSM & CDMA respectively. It doesn't matter which you have from a root perspective.
As above, there is a new root method called MotoFail, which will allow you to root 2.3.6 without downgrading. Use that. Problem solved.

I ran the Motofail and it seems to have worked. Sometimes though it would be nice to feel that you aren't going to brick the phone and would like information ahead of time before running a program that you've never heard of. That's why the questions.
Hi Forum. I need help. I rooted my phone before using motofail and the ICS is now available in my country.but the update failed/ and I verified that I need to unroot my phone first. I unrooted my xt910 via SuperSU/OTArootkeeper. looks like it works coz I no longer have the superuser on my phone. and ota rootkeeper/apps says that my phone is unrooted. but the ICS update still failed// I dont know what to do now. my current system version: 65.1.40.XT910.PSHAsiaRetail.en*.03

Yow.. Thx for the reply man. Will you please send a link of post or somethin related the compatible rsd file that I will use? I really have no idea. Should I root my phone before proceeding? Btw I didnt install/flash any ROM. My razr was just rooted

Sorry, being kind of a noob myself i don't know how to post links just search the forums and look for videos on YouTube, that's what I did, because the razr has a locked bootloader it's very hard to really ruin it, seems the devs have a fix for everything ! Good luck

It seems like you are already on PSHAsiaRetail stock.
So just read and follow the instructions given here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1748944
**Root should not be a problem if you follow the above thread! cheers..

I don't know if this will let me post a link yet, but the "Literally Fool Proof Guide To Installing .211 (ICS)" (Google that) was the guide that got the update installed for me. It involved wiping the phone, but it's worth it since I had the time to go through my Titanium backups, etc. Here's the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1692694
EDIT: BTW, I had to get Version 1.7 of Matt's DroidRAZRUtility to re-root after installing ICS 4.0.4 (i.e. the .211 update). Version 1.6 didn't root it. I did not need the "Modified" version 1.6, though; did the fastboot flashing with Matt's 1.6-final. I also had to install updated Motorola drivers (came with DroidRAZRUtility1.7forICS.zip) to reroot.

I apologize if this has been asked b4 but I am looking for the least likely to mess up root method for my wifes droid razr. I am very new to rooting and successfully rooted my droid 4 with the droid4 utility. Please point me in the direction for something similar for the razr

Worked Like a Charm
Dec 13, 2013 - Worked like a charm on my XT912 AFTER I downloaded latest drivers from motorola and updated them on my PC. (wasn't working at first).
Try googling Matts Utility for Droid razr Jellybean. I would post the link but I'm not allowed to yet. It's a one click, easy method of rooting and restoring your phone if it breaks.
I also used Matt's utility. It was very user friendly.
Guys!
I need your help!
I have a Razr Maxx XT910 retail running JB 4.1.2, I want to install the kitkat custom rom on it, so somewhere i read that i need to first root the phone, then install custom recovery CWM, then go for kitkat.
I'm stuck on the first step, Rooting
I have tried the method which includes Oracle VM VirtualBox and the JB_bionic.ova file. does not work. i tried more than 10 times and after rebooting it says update the su binary(super user update). I guess it means my phone is not actually rooted.
What should i do to get the kitkat?
