Announcing the GSMArena Smartphone Champions League
GSMArena.com has a current rankings page that sorts phones by the daily interest in them from our readers. We use that to keep our finger on the pulse of what’s popular, but it can be useful to our readers too. But the daily rankings shift quickly as a new popular phone is launched and at the same time slowly as old popular phones take quite a while to go down the ladder.

This is why we decided to launch the Smartphone Champions League – a knockout tournament to determine which phone you, our beloved readers, like the best. It’s strictly a popularity thing – we haven’t selected phones based on features, value-for-money or anything like that.
The winner will bring some satisfaction to its owners, but it’s not just a feel-good victory either. If you get a popular phone, you get some not so obvious perks to go with it – it’s easier to use certain non-standard features if your friends have the same phone, you get support more easily, either from friends or from the Internet, more attention from developers and more news coverage too.
The rules are simple – each round pairs of phones go head to head, you vote for your favorite and the winner goes on to the next stage. We picked to top 16 phones and the 16 phones that follow them (ranked solely by popularity) and paired phones from each group against phones from the other group. The pairings are mostly random though we did make an effort to seed the top 16 phones in tournament to ensure the most interesting matches will come in at the latter stages. This should make things more fun to watch as the tournament unfolds.
For the first round we’ll be posting four pairs at once and for each post you’ll have a couple of days to vote on. Then another four will be posted until the round is complete. You can see the bracket for the tournament below (click for full size).
You’ll notice the Nokia Asha 501 is the only phone outside the iOS – Android – Windows Phone Top 3. Nokia also participates with low-, mid- and high-end Windows Phone handsets. Apple is the company to enjoy the best relative representation – all its currently available smartphones are highly popular. Samsung and Sony both have plenty of contestants in the ring, while LG, Motorola and HTC have only one or two chances to win the title. Maybe one is all they need.
Smartphone Champions League, Matchday 1
Currently, the Note 3 is losing to the Lumia 1020! We can't have that!!! Show your support and VOTE!!!
Click Here To Vote For The Note 3!!!
I voted for N3 but seeing that 1020 is few thousand votes ahead, I'm not sure if the N3 will win. Also, I can care less if this phone loses votes on that website and yet alone I hardly visit GSMarena for any content besides phone specs. There are other websites that I visit to get my news feed on my devices which provide plenty of information. We all know the N3 is better than the 1020.
We lost but who cares because what's a tournament without a belt!
There is a thread in the stickies for other device comparisons

In this thread i am going to collect all available applications and games which work with augmented reality, especially on mobile phones.
What is Augmented reality? I will try a little explanation:
Its a method to combine the (live)view of a camera with computergraphics, animations and information.
It normally uses markers, which can be detected by the camerasoftware and then used to project any graphical object on it.
The markers can be moved and the projected object will follow it.
To get a better idea, have a look at these videos:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lfp8id6bpDU&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVlBFNg823M
The technology itself is not new, its already known and used since a few years. But there exist only very few usable appplications or games with it.
So here is a list with applications
AR Zoo:

It works on my htc touch hd.
It is a bit slow but its cool to see. It even works with my pc screen as marker

Amazing!
This looks great!
I'll see if it works with the Polaris (Touch Cruise)!
This works on my Qtek 8310 (as it is the phone used in their samples) and on the tytn2 (but the video lags a lot)
This is really neat stuff. The Zoo demo worked on my HTC Touch.
I found another demo on the same site: http://www.imagination.at/downloads/Handheld_AR/HCCB/
yes but the second demo is not that spectacular, just a walking viking.
i have seeen that augmented reality has a very interesting and wide spectrum of possible applications. one of them ( i know, only for iphone, but maybe someone can develop it on winmo) is wikitude http://www.mobilizy.com/wikitude.php
And a very cool game for my linux machine i have to try is levelhead
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ks1u0A8xdU
This freaky guy has a lot of similar interesting things on his website (this may be interesting for some developers?)
http://www.csc.kth.se/~alx/
i will tell you if i found more interesting things for our mobiles. maybe others find something too?
Wow, thanks for bringing this to our attention. That's one of the coolest things I've seen in a while!
Yeah.. now I feel so outdated.. Never knew these kind of stuff existed.
I thought this was only in some SF writer's mind
I listened to a short story series recently from Audible called "Metatropolis" and one of the stories involved the use of augmented reality goggles to superimpose objects onto the landscape, constructing an alternative society for those who could "see". I thought the idea was cool, but I never realized how close we are.
and it will all become funnier with these
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EyeTap
any news? has someone found something?
it would be really cool if someone ports the wikitude or an similar application to our windows mobile devices!!! anyone out there? i am willing to spend 5$ for the start
Zoo don't work on my HD...
cant make it run on my toshiba g900...
cant make it run on my toshiba g900...
works on a touch elfin.
If you had to, how would you make android and android devices--esp. tablets--better suited (or indispensable) to studies and research? What's already great? What would need to change? Scroll down to the end for my thoughts, and please add your own ideas.
Background:
Tech has become an in important part of the lives of many students in the west: smartphones, netbooks, laptops, PCs and, recently, even tablets. I get the impression few manufacturers--other than Apple--are paying attention to the students, choosing instead to court the average consumer, the geeks, or the business sector.
Over the past year, android--despite its limits--has become integral to my studies. My phone has given me a great way to study flash-cards all the time. My tablet has proven to be the perfect device for reading books and articles in PDF and HTML formats. Both have proven useful for interfacing with services like evernote. The ability to take all my info with me at all times has made me read and learn much more (without breaking my back or my spirit). It's also given me a lot more leisure time
Thing is, to the best of my knowledge, I am the only person in my class--and probably one of only a handful in my programme--who works this way. I don't think this is exclusively due to the costs (in terms of money) of setting up a system such as mine--after all, iphones, ipads, and macbooks (or macbook airs) don't really come cheap.
Some other reasons may be: that it's a pain in the ass to buy and juggle a phone, a tablet and a netbook; that it doesn't really suit everyone, or that it isn't worth the effort to get used to; that it's, well, dorky.
With the arrival of Tegra 3 and the new Transformer Prime, I've begun to think that android tablets may be on the verge of becoming more than just luxury devices for media consumption (or toys for dorks I kid! I kid). However, there are some changes I'd like to see:
- Student discounts and subsidies, esp. for accessories such as the keyboard dock (in the way Apple products are often subsidised).
- Native support for split screen with all apps, similar to the solution from Onskreen:

}
The latter would be esp. valuable for me, as it's the feature for which I most need my regular computer wrt studying (chromium + studydroid or evernote).
How 'bout you? I realise some of you are very much against the notion of tablets ever being anything more than toys for consuming youtube videos, and I'm mostly asking those who don't fall into that camp
peace
Btw, is there an official Asus rep here on xda?
Expect a release of cornerstone very soon ;-)

Want manufacturers to make Mobile Phones Mobile Phone sized?, read on and sign.
Over the last few years, Android has taken the smartphone world by storm, climbing to the top spot in just about every major market out there. The Google platform offers a mix of features that can't be matched by any of its competitors and is offered on hardware so diverse that it has covered almost every conceivable market segment.
However, with recent trends in flagship droids, we feel there's a substantial group of users that is being ignored. As Android top dogs all choose huge screens for their high-end offerings, those looking to experience the most capable hardware in a mid-sized smartphones are left out in the dry. Despite the large number of companies committed to the Android cause, there's not a single manufacturer to come up with a handset to match the raw power and display brilliance of the Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One or Sony Xperia Z in a shell that's as easy to pocket as, say, the Apple iPhone 5.

I hope many more do and the manufactures get the point. I'm struggling to finally decide on what I'm going to upgrade to come the end of the month, the Z would be the obvious choice, but the size is an issue. Not all of us work in an office where we can sit it nicely displayed on the desk, 5"+ screens for those of us doing some real grafting can take up needed pocket space and you've to worry about leaning against stuff when you're working.

One of the latest mobile games to become available on AppGallery, Rescue Cut, is growing in popularity with mobile gamers around the globe.
The free game is app maker MarkApp’s most popular product yet, with more than 100 million downloads worldwide since being released last August. It’s making particularly strong headway in global markets, including in Japan, the US and the UK, and its availability on AppGallery is helping drive its growing uptake around the world.
Rescue Cut is a light-hearted take on a rescue situation, where players need to save a boy tied to the ceiling by cutting him loose and helping him make the perfect escape from a confined room without getting harmed. These operations become more challenging as players progress, with new obstacles, hazards and characters introduced throughout the levels.

MarkApp’s Masaki Otomo believes Rescue Cut’s simple, yet interesting game play caters to a wide range of audiences looking for a fun way to spend time on their phone.
“A growing number of smartphone users are playing games casually in their spare time such as during their daily commute, while on break at work, and even while multitasking around the house. Rescue Cut provides a casual and fun challenge that can be played instantly, but it’s also mentally engaging as it’s based on physics and requires players to think on their feet as they progress through the 50 levels.
“Working with Huawei and listing Rescue Cut on AppGallery means hundreds of millions more users around the world can enjoy the game, and more people are downloading it to their Huawei smartphones every day,” Otomo said.
AppGallery is Huawei’s official app distribution platform, providing an open, smart and innovative ecosystem that gives consumers access to thousands of apps. One of the top three app marketplaces globally, AppGallery is available in more than 170 countries and regions, and currently has 400 million monthly active users globally.

TO-FU Oh!SUSHI, one of the most popular education gaming apps for children with 35 million downloads worldwide, has arrived on AppGallery. Together with “Daizu” the skunk, children can enjoy the following game features:
Be adventurous with guests who will put in sushi orders but at the same time eat and enjoy whatever they make.
Try their hand at making hundreds of different Nigiri, Rolls and Gunkan sushi in 3 specialised kitchens.
Experience what it is like to catch fishes from the aquarium, cut it up and put it on top of the rice in the Nigiri kitchen where freshness is key. They would also get to be bold and pile up the fishes and wasabi if they want to.
Fire the topping bazooka and spray the sushi fillings on the bed of rice in the Rolls Kitchen. They get to go super-fat or super-skinny – any way they want.
Top as much fish, meat, candy and popcorn as they wish in the Gunkan kitchen. They can even take photos and use them as sushi toppings too.
Look forward to guests’ reactions as they eat the bold, wild and unique creations!

It is an honour for us to be able to publish TO-FU Oh!SUSHI, which has achieved 35 million downloads worldwide, on AppGallery.
