[[[help]]] might've bricked my phone - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got clockwork mod 6.0.3.1 installed on a Galaxy S3 but I can't install CM... and I can't boot back onto my original rom. If I restart my phone, it just goes into Clockworkmod, I don't have to hold power + home + up for CWMod... So CWMod is the only thing I can get to, in addition to the download mode (Vol down + power + home).
If I apply Cyanogenmod11.zip through clockwork, it says
(Status 7)
OR
Installation aborted.
No additional information, just "installation aborted". Really sucks....
Now I get status 7 or install aborted depending upon the .zip I use. I've tried nightlys and stables, neither work. ANY HELP APPRECIATED!

I can't reset binary counter because I can't go into my "desktop" so to speak. I only have two access points on the phone, the download mode and ClockworkMod.
2. Flash Stock Recovery
I am stuck at downloading my StockRecovery, because the US Cellular variant is not listed. I have looked and looked and looked everywhere and can't find stockrecovery for US Cell.

Okay, so we can worry about the binary counter later. Whats the model no. of your phone?
Also, why don't you try flash official firmware leaving the recovery as it is.

The fact u say your US variant isn't listed is a bit worrying, you know this is a forum for the international GalaxyS3 and the US versions have there own forum and ROMs?

The error is realy easy to fix( status 7 )
put your sd-card into your comuter
go into the zip file of your rom
META_INF>com>google>android>updater-script
open it with notpad++
remote assert(getprop("ro.product.device") == "pyramid" || getprop("ro.build.product") == "pyramid"); -- or watever the build.product will be
then put it in the zip again, make sure you overwrite it
and install the rom again the error should be gone now!
Good luck, JM_team

Re
The same as he said
Or if you have any other recovery on your SD (TWRP or I personally use Devils rec.) Flash it, flash CM and the dreaded error 7 should not come up. I think its due to outdated recovery so either way its better to flash an up to date one. Cheerz

If you havent already download Rom Manager and reflash CWM. Soemtimes people tell you to flash an older version then reflash the newest version.

Do you have the update.zip for CWM still on your sdcard? If so reboot into recovery using the power and volume key, it should take you to the Samsung recovery, then go to apply update.zip.

In order to have a fully working rom manager, you have to flash the clockworkmod.tar kernal. I was having the exact same issues, I couldn't do a backup or restore. You will have to do odin on your phone.

Exactly.
You cannot install CWM without odin / redbend / etc. There are no shortcuts. Just downloading ROM Manager and hoping that you're special or lucky is not enough to make this work.
Follow the instructions.
I guess I had assumes he had already done that.

Can't boot into CWM

I'm following the Bionix instructions at the Team Whiskey website. And I'm stuck at the part where I need to reboot into CWM.
After I dl'd ROM Manager, and I clicked to the latest CWM, I did not immediately reboot my phone (as I have now read that I should have done). and anything I try to get CWM to start isn't working. Any ideas?
After you flash Clock Work Recovery from Rom Manager reboot into stk recovery. Then reinstall packages . You may need to reinstall packages twice then it should come up .

I'm on 3e. What do I need to flash to change this?
Go to the Development section and look for untermensch's 3e recovery modified to work like 2e .
You could also Odin back to 2.1 stk then reflash CWM in RomManager the flash what ever you want .
puit this update file below on your internal sd card , reboot holding vol up vol down + power , reinstall packages if it returns you to samer screen ht reinstall packages again , enjoy

Error while installing custom ROM

Do you have Clockwork recovery installed on your phone? How are you trying to install these custom ROMs? Are you using ROM Manager?
You don't need root to flash a Rom...
Get Odin
Get an Odin flashable version of cwm
Flash said recovery with Odin
Boot into recovery by holding all the buttons till you feel a vibrant and letting off the power button, or the adb command: adb reboot recovery (or since you have root, download a terminal emulator from the market enter the command: reboot recovery, then Grant superuser permission.)
Then Flash Rom in cwm...
Old version of TWRP maybe?
To run the ROM Manager I needed root access. I tried to load the ROM from the ROM Manager and also straight from manual recovery mode.

That is stock recovery 3e...
Go read my post above...
THIS IS A LINK TO CWM TOUCH...JUST CLICK ANYWHERE HERE AND GET THE ODIN FLASHABLE VERSION
You do not need root to flash a Rom... Rom manager is not needed, and in fact just causes more problems than is worth
I don't think ROMmanager is even capable of flashing anything on the note. Someone correct me if I am wrong
You're correct...i wish that app would just go away and be erased from people's memories.
Actually i don't think Rom manager has worked on any Samsung device since eclair...as froyo was when they introduced 3e recovery, which requires signed update.zips, which only Samsung has the signature tool for.
So the update.zip Rom manager downloads to flash cwm with just gets stuck at "E: signature verification failed"
I'm still getting errors I'm going to search on youtube some more and see what could possibly be an issue. I go in with Up+home+power and erase everything I can in there and try to load from .zip and errors.
So I got it to work. I didn't really do anything differently except put it on my external SD card instead of my internal.

Is my phone bricked or can someone help?

I followed this video to install Cyanogenmod. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQdSOTdV06Q
during the install I got a red error stating there was some problem with the gapps zip. Now my phone gives a quick samsung flash and nothing else happens. If I hold power, home and volume up I can still get into the cyanogenmod screen with the option to install.
I downloaded the files again and tried installing. It got as far as flashing file 1 of 2 and the working bar keeps spinning and doesn't make anymore progress. The screen eventually went black and now I cant even get into the recovery screen. The screen flashed the samsung logo with small blue writing in the top left and then goes black again.
Please help...
Update - If I hold power, volume down and home I am able to get into the downloading screen.
Try to reflash cyanogen mod again but before that format you device completely by going to recovery mod!
Or try to download the cyanogen mod and gapps from xda thread or from somewhere else!
Before flashing any ROM, it is strongly recommended to completely format your device!
Hope it will help you

I found this but it is very vague
IF YOUR PHONE MATCHES OPTION 1 LOOK HERE!!
A soft brick is easily fixed in most cases, here is what you can do to fix your phone!
-Boot into Recovery (Vol Up + Home Button + Power Button) and wipe your data/cache/delvik cache and factory reset and start all over.
-If Recovery fails, try booting into Download Mode (Vol Down + Home Button + Power Button) and use Odin to get into stock firmware and start again.
(if youre using a Mac, Linux or Ubuntu Heimdall can be used to flash stock firmware)
-Also make sure the downloaded ROM/GApps are not corrupt when youre flashing. You can do this by checking the MD5.
-If youre getting a "STATUS 7" error, please update your recovery, or update your bootloader.
I also found this one that I will try an follow.

To confuse things a little, this phone is a telus phone that I had unlocked to use on Bell. I assume I reflash the telus firmware, am I correct?
Bro just download your phone's custum recovery .
Now go to Odin mod in your phone volume down, home, power.then select volume up.now connect your phone in to PC.
Now open Odin select PDA then browse custum recovery. And start button click.
I was able to get my original firmware back with odin.
Can someone link me to the current files for my phone so I don't screw this up again? Its a Telus i747m, which I believe falls under AT&T.
Thanks

Bro go to this site:http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/
Then create free account select your phone model and download latest firmware.
Then flash via Odin.
Best of luck.
I want to say thanks for all the replies.
I was able to sort out my problem and here is the solution.
I was trying to install the zip files from the micro sd and it was failing every time. I then tried the same sd card in a usb-otg cable and it worked perfectly.
It must have something to do with the built in sd reader.

[Q] Problem with boot, recovery, fastboot... jeeez

Hi guys, I really hope u can help me, cause i admit i did my share of research and got no solution
My N8010 was using GNABO 6.5 and Boeffla Kernel. While using it the other morning, the tablet suddenly rebooted and got stuck on the Galaxy Note screen. It stays on it a few seconds then reboot to the same screen in a loop.
I can access the recovery menu (CWM 6.0.3.6 ) but my options there are pretty limited, cant wipe and cant install zip files. At the botton of the recovery i have the following logs:
Warning: no file_contexts
E: Can´t open /cache/recovery/log
E: Can´t open /cache/recovery/log
E: Can´t open /cache/recovery/last_log
E: Can´t open /cache/recovery/last_log
I read somewhere that the problem should be solved if i could install a new recovery through Fastboot. Problem is fastboot cant find my device when on bootloader (but i can find it through ADB).
Using ADB sideload to install new recovery or new ROM gave me error on CWM.
Please, save my Tabye.

Samsung devices don't support fastboot instead they have something called download mode, which you can entered powering off the device and then pressing Volume Down button + Power Button simultaneously, after a couple seconds you'll see a warning screen at the warning screen press Volume Up and the device will be in download mode. Then you can use Odin to flash a new recovery, I would recommend checking out this guide on how to flash a recovery with Odin, and this thread for a recovery you could flash for your device model. Let me know if you still have questions.
