You need to select install zip from sdcard. If you select install update, it will look in your sdcard for update.zip and ignore everything else. If it doesn't find something labelled update.zip, it throws the error your linked.

The only options in the recovery mode are:
reboot now
install update from sd card
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
Whenever I install any .zip files by "install update from sd card" , it shows E: signature verification failed
So , any other solutions? By The Way, thanks buddy...

I have tried finding the answer to this problem all over and haven't found anything. I've seen the question asked but no answers. I have unlocked my bootloader and installed CWM just fine. When I got to flash Gingerbread and select install from sd I get this:
-- Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
Installation aborted.
I'd very much appreciate any help. Thanks!

Yeah I had selected install zip from sd. I had already watched your videos to make sure I was doing everything right, so thanks for making those! The strange this is that I was able to flash Cherrblur with no problem at all.
Can anyone explain to me why I keep getting this when I'm trying to flash a new rom?
-- Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(bad)
Installation aborted.
That's what it says when I try to install anything with clockworkmod. I have followed all directions on NVFlashing and I have followed all directions on wiping my gTab clean and partitioning from 4096 back to 2048 and basically formatting it. I have downloaded about 3-4 roms, I have used different browsers to download them, they all cannot be corrupt can they? The Flashback 7.2 zip file I used a few days back (and worked) gives me the same problem. So I do not know what I did to neuter this baby of mine, I wish I did so I could undo it. I thought NVFlash could fix any thing?
I can boot up to stock 1.2 but really, I cannot go back to that after tasting all these roms starting with vegan ginger and than to 5.1 and most recently to Flashback. What really is the point in trying to NVFlash over and over if it is going to give me the same crappy Installation aborted message? I have tried both bootloaders, and none of the roms will flash. I love the gTab, but I guess I Frankensteined it too often and killed off it's heart. If anyone has an answer, I am dying to hear you out. Even if you want to call me a moron, I can appreciate it for the fact that you guys read all this. Thanks for reading, and any answers you guys may have I thank thee in advance.

Q. Do you have CWM installed? If yes, have you tried the "install zip from sdcard" option in CWM which lets you choose the zip file you want to install?
Here's what I recommend if you're on stock ROM with CWM installed:
0. Remove external SD cards if present.
1. Repartition the internal SD card (2048/0).
2. Copy the update.zip somewhere onto the internal SD card. (This zip file need not be called update.zip or be in the root directory of the SD card. It can be anywhere.)
3. Do "wipe data/factory reset". Almost a mandatory step when switching ROMs.
4. Select the "install zip from sdcard" (instead of the "apply update from sdcard" menu item) menu option, navigate to where the zip file is stored and then install it.
5. If the installation fails, attach the USB cable to the gTablet, then get me a dmesg output and the recovery.log file(s) using adb:
Code:
C:\> [B]adb shell dmesg > dmesg.txt[/B]
C:\> [B]adb pull /cache/recovery.log recovery1.txt[/B]
C:\> [B]adb pull /tmp/recovery.log recovery2.txt[/B]
If all else fails there's a reset button on the main board, lol im not sure what it does exactly, so only try it if its a last resort Good luck!
Hey everyone longtime since I've done this kinda thing but i'm a bit stuck
heres what im using
Galaxy SII
Lite'ning Rom v6.1 XXKH3
Android version 2.3.4
ClockworkMod 4.0.0.2
I've downloaded: update-cm-9-20120305-NIGHTLY-galaxys2-signed.zip
I renamed it to update.zip and its on my SD card
When I try to run it I get
"Install from sd card
Finding update
opening update
E:Can't open/sdcard/update.zip
(no such file or directory)
Installation aborted."
Do I need to wipe the phone? Or get to OS 3 and then go to 4?
Thanks for the help
its been about 3 years since I used android, but i'm back!
fixed it. Formatted sd card first durrrr
Formatting didn't fix
I'm getting the same error under the same conditions.
Formatted the SD card as per your suggestion. Used Clockwork to perform the format just to make sure, and put update.zip back on it. (Noticed the format was FAT32.)
Still getting
E: Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(No such file or directory)
Click to collapse
Am I going crazy?
I think I'm doing everything else right. See the steps I'm taking.
If you're trying to flash a CM9 nightly, do not rename the file. Go into recovery and:-
1) Install zip from sdcard
2) Choose zip from sdcard (or choose zip from internal sdcard depending on where you have the CM9 nightly you're wanting to flash located).
3) Navigate to the folder where the file you want to flash is.
4) Choose the file
5) Confirm install; "Yes"
6) Reboot & done
Do not use "Apply /sdard/update.zip
Hello everybody,
I've been wasting a lot of hours for finding a solution of the "BAD ZIP" error.
Googled everything i can think about, and got a simple solution.
I found people telling to format the sdcard, fat32 etc... I do not want to format 8 Gigas... So keep searching:
The problem:
Code:
--Install: /emmc/[COLOR="Red"]XXX[/COLOR].zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
E:Can't open /emmc/[COLOR="red"]XXX[/COLOR].zip
(bad)
Installation Aborted
The solution:
First of all, it does not matter how many times you download the zip. The zip is corrupted. Even though the Winrar (Or any other program you use) does not warning you.
***Ok... So there are 1M ppls who downloaded and install the zip without any problem... Why only me?!*** Do the next:
Download the zip directly to your sdcard. (You can download through the phone's browser, or in the computer, "Save As..." and choose the sdcard directory.)
Reboot into recovery -> Wipe Wipe Wipe... -> install zip from sdcard.
Should work!
In addition:
If still does not work, here are some things i've found:
* Turn off USB DEBUGGING.
* Format your sd card
* Move files from computer to phone with adb.
Hope you will find this thread helpful! >

Disclaimer: I am a noob and this is my first attempt at flashing a custom ROM to my Galaxy Nexus i9250
In order to flash a custom ROM to my Galaxy Nexus i9250 (GSM), I did the following:
- unlocked / rooted the phone
- flashed CWM Recovery
- downloaded a ROM and saved it to my SD card
- wiped data cache
- Went to recovery and tried to install it from sd card
I got the red exclamation into android image and the message that "installation aborted"
The recovery log:
-- Installing: /sdcard/update.zip
Finding update package...
I:Update location: /sdcard/update.zip
I:using /data/media for /sdcard/update.zip.
Opening update package...
Installing update...
Installation aborted.
result was NULL, message is: assert failed: install_zip("/sdcard/update.zip")
------------
I have tried the following:
- flashed CWM recovery several times and retried
- downloaded the file again from internet and tried
- downloaded different custom ROMs and tried
Each time I reach the same point .. red exclamation mark and installation aborted ..
Perhaps I am making a very obvious mistake .. but I honestly cannot figure out what
Any help will be greatly appreciated
Thanks !
Give me the steps you're taking right from when CWM boots up.
You should be doing this:
wipe data/factory reset
advanced
wipe dalvik cache
install zip from sdcard
choose zip from sdcard
navigate to the .zip file
Thanks

I changed the following steps:
- wiping dalvik cache. Had missed that before
- my mac was unzipping the downloads , and I was zipping them again before transferring them to sdcard.
- I had not saved gapps zip file to sd card (dnt know whether that was required).
Anyways .. done now.
Thanks.
