[Q] TWRP Restore Location - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a question about TWRP that is not directly related to the Samsung Galaxy S III. Testing CM 10.2 this evening and I carefully made a nandroid backup first. After installing CM 10.2 I had some troubles -- nothing major -- and thought I'd just revert. However, I couldn't see the backup in the TWRP restore list. Turned out that CM 10.2 has created sdcard1 and sdcard0 and the backup directory was pointing to a different place. In a momentary lapse I pressed the "Restore Defaults" button in TWRP. Now when TWRP starts there is a log message which says "E: Storage partition '//TWRP/BACKUPS/6a0a9ba9' which is not a valid location.
Any ideas how to correct this? Reinstalling TWRP does not seem to correct this.
Thanks!

SGSII CM10 CWM6 Recovery Fails For /data

Am running: CWM-based Recovery v6.0.1.5
Rooted with SU method.
Rom: Resurrection Remix JB 3.1.2 with CM10 kernel
Having problems restoring a recent backup with CWM recovery 6 as this stops half way through saying:
com.android.renderscript.cache
com.ratebeer.android
files
DATA_Preferences
DATA_Tiles
DATA_Tiles_1
Segmentation fault
com.ratebe
Error while restoring /data!
Md5 checksums are all ok and there are no errors on the SD card.
The full logs are here on pastebin and being a noob I cant link to them. However if you google the topic title you should come across the thread with links on Cyanogenmod forum. I'm not sure how active that forum is so I thought I'd post here see if anyone could throw some suggestions my way as pretty desperate to recover this backup and not have to factory default. Thanks in advance!
Ok so I found out from a helpful chap on CM forum that the data.ext4.dup file has some erroneous lines in it where they get truncated from being too long. Apparently editing these lines so they're no longer truncated works but now I'm having SD card problems :/
He also mentioned in the latest CWM recovery 6.0.1.9 this problem is fixed. Currently looking for this but cant find it anywhere for SGS2.

[Q] New CWM can't restore backup of older CWM

Hey guys,
I have a little problem I can't find a solution to by searching.
I have a GS3 i9300 rooted with CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4.
When rooting, a version of CWM was installed (5.something).
Later, when installing af custom rom, I followed instructions and updated to a newer CWM (6.0.1.2):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1719744
Later, I was thinking about restoring my original system backup, which I had made with the older CWM version right after rooting.
The new CWM can't restore my older backup. It can't recognize the file, not even when I copy it manually to the new CWM folder.
How can I solve this problem?
Do I need to install an older CWM again?
If yes, then one more question: As I said, my original CWM was installed when rooting. Can someone give me a download just for the CWM tar file included in the mentioned CF-Root?
Thanks a lot in advanced,
Agoston
Replace with older CWM root .

still not recognizing + weird directory tree
After trying out three custom ROMs and after updating CWM, my system directory is rather weird. Besides the usual system folders, there is a "0" folder, that contains another set of system folders, and another "0" folder, containing the same. Also, my free internal storage as good as disappeared, from 8 GB to 1 GB. So, it looks like I have several systems on each other?!
How can I reduce this weird directory tree to just one? Do I need to wipe the SD-card?!
And by the way, I rooted the device again through Odin, and the old CWM is now installed again. Still though, it can't recognize the old backup.
As you probably imagine, I am hesitating to format SD-card, especially if CWM can't restore my factory ROM.
Can anyone help?
Thanks!

I copied the backup directory manually to the "most superficial" CWM folder, and now trying system restore. I'ts not easy with four (!) different CWM directories.
Unfortunately I got an "error restoring data" message, and the phone is stuck in Samsung logo when booting.
Also, when trying to do a factory reset, I get the message: "error mounting /sd-card/.android_secure!"
Could this be because there is not enough space or something?!
If someone could help me with how to proceed, I would appreciate it!
Thanks.
Okay, the issue is solved. I admit, I might have been a little inpatient. Despite the "error restoring data" message, the stock factory system booted after a few tries - I might not have waited long enough. It seems that these "Folder 0"s were all just security copies of the old systems, and of course consumed a lot of hard disc space, so I just deleted them. Haven't met any negative consequences so far. I just got scared because of the error message and the too long boot time. Also this phenomenon with "Folder 0"s is not something I met before on other devices.

[Q] ROM Manager vs AOKP SGT7 MS6, bug on emmc & external_sd

I'm using great AOKP SGT7 Milestone #6 on GT-P1000. I have one problem for backup ROM to SD card.
While I use ROM Manager v5.5.2.3, I set "Use External Storage" to "ON" in setting as screenshot1. It shows "Backup Current ROM" to "/mnt/emmc/clockworkmod/backup" in screenshot2. After reboot into recovery mode to do the job. It gets error "E:unknown volume for path [/external_sd/clockworkmod/backup/2013-02-25-13.17.49]". I have no idea to fix it. Is there any simple way to fix this bug?

Same issue here. It used to work, but all the sudden stopped. I just recently upgraded to cwm 6.0.4.3 but I'm not sure if I've done a backup since upgrading cwm.
Samsung GS3 on vzw
CM 10.2 android 4.31
FYI - I went downflashed back a couple versions of CWM Recovery and I got the same error until I went back to CWM Recovery 6.0.3.6 and that version WORKED!!!
Backup to external SD card for CWM versions 6.0.3.7 through 6.0.4.3 seem to be borked on my D2VZW (Gallaxy S3)
Within ROM Manager v5.5.3.2, it says it will be backing up to: "/storage/sdcard1/clockworkmod/backup" however when it reboots into recovery, versions 6.0.3.7 and beyond attempt to use the "/external_sd/clockworkmod/backup/" path, which doesn't exist. When I check the mounts, /external_sd/ isn't listed as an option in recovery.
This would appear to be an issue with CWM Recovery, now the real question is: how to get this fixed?......
Still broken in CWM version 6.0.4.5
Still broken.
I upgraded to CyanogenMod v11, running ROM Manager 5.5.3.7 still throws this error with CWM Recovery versions including & after v6.0.3.7
Still broken in CWM 6.0.4.5
Seriously, has anyone gotten this working?

[Q] Schizophrenic Clockworkmod has me confused - Nandroids in 2 places

When I take a Nandroid backup now, it puts them in
Code:
/data/media/clockworkmod/backup/
When I boot into recovery, the backups show and I can select them, delete them, all no problem.
HOWEVER
CWM actually says it puts the backups in:
Code:
/sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/
(you can see this in Advanced Recovery)
and when I go to this dir, there is a backup there dated 2014-04-14
which is when I actually installed CWM and then Cyanogenmod 10.2.
I had just bought the phone that morning and it had stock Samsung Android on it.
BUT
this backup of 12014-04-14 does NOT show in CWM Recovery.
Anybody understand why CWM is putting backups in a different place to the original backup it created on install?
Also, if I wanted to restore this backup,
can I just navigate to it in CWM and select it and restore it?
(already had 1 accident just 'trying something out' so don't want to push my luck by trying).
note: not using RomManager
CWM 6.0.4.6
Cyanogenmod 10.2.0

Read this >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/general/info-flashed-4-2-sdcard-data-t2274218 << it explains everything..
Thanks tallman43 for the link - fantastic information! This issue really belongs there, but I can't move it so will continue here.
I understand what rootSU is saying, but it increases the mystery in this situation I think:
With 4.2, /sdcard is no longer mounted to /data/media
Now, It is mounted to /data/media/0
...
...many older recoveries still probably see /data/media as the location of /sdcard, so nandroid backups may end up there instead of /0. For example, often you end up with /data/media/clockworkmod instead of /data/media/0/clockworkmod. Some recoveries have a setting to change the location to /data/media/0 (Such as Philz recovery)
...
Here you see the 0, Legacy and Obb folders that I should have and also a ClockworkMod folder which I shouldn't. You will see others... Move everything except Legacy and Obb into "0".

BUT
1. When the system was stock Samsung S3 (4.1? 4.2?) CWM put the backup in
/sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/
but after the upgrade to Cyanogenmod 10.2 (4.3) CWM put the Nandroid backups in
/data/media/clockworkmod/backup/
From rootSU's explanation, I would have expected the opposite behaviour
(if going from 4.1 to 4.3) or no change (if going from 4.2 to 4.3)?
Or at least, if the problem was CWM being 'old', that it would not change where it put the backups?
ok, looks like CWM 6.0.4.6 / Cyanogenmod 10.2.0,
doesn't obey the rules as set out in rootSU's excellent post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/general/info-flashed-4-2-sdcard-data-t2274218
In Summary:
CWM settings are stored in
/sdcard/clockworkmod/
(aka /data/media/0/clockworkmod/)CWM backups are stored in
/data/media/clockworkmod/backup/
(note the missing /0/)
Detail
CWM settings are stored in
/sdcard/clockworkmod/
(aka /data/media/0/clockworkmod/)Tested this by changing the default backup format from .tgz to .tar
and the file /sdcard/clockworkmod/.default_backup_format was changed !
CWM backups are stored in
/data/media/clockworkmod/backup/
(note the missing /0/)Tested this by moving the unrecognized 140414 backup taken at install time
from
/sdcard/clockworkmod/to
/data/media/clockworkmod/backup/where CWM now recognized it.
However, CWM still says its backups are in /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup, which is not correct.
In fact remembering two key points from rootSU's post:
With 4.2, /sdcard is no longer mounted to /data/media
Now, It is mounted to /data/media/0
...
...many older recoveries still probably see /data/media as the location of /sdcard, so nandroid backups may end up there instead of /0.
For example, often you end up with /data/media/clockworkmod instead of /data/media/0/clockworkmod.

It seems that CWM obeys this on the initial backup on install of Cym 10.2, but then gets confused on all subsequent backups.
Either that or my head and tail are in parallellellarap universes.

[Q] Problem with TWRP backup after rooting

Hi friends,
I just rooted my I9300 for the first time. I followed the guides step by step and got to point where i should backup everything with either TWRP or Clockworkmod. I chose to go with TWRP, installed it and when i try to do a classical backup it tells me the new version of TWRP is only able to backup to internal storage. I was not sure if i may proceed with flashing ROM's at this point. I couldn't find information on threads regarding this issue. and i was not allowed to post on developer threads where TWRP tutorial was:http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/orig-development/recovery-twrp-2-7-1-0-touch-recovery-t1943592
Did i miss a step?
Thank you all for your help
p.s. once i had TWRP app running it prompted me to download Busybox of which there was no mention in any of the guides. I uninstalled it. Good/bad??
Do you have the actual version 2.8. I never had any problems with writing to /reading from internal or external sdcard.
And the TWRP-installer asked for Busybox indeed. Installing it is harmless and useless too. Do it or install via Odin.
