I have always had MKD until recently when I took the 4.3 MJ7 update. Now I see that safestrap is available for MJ7.
Question: can you load any ROM in safestrap or does it have to be a ROM made specifically for SS? I know the Loki'd ROMs all include the kernel, but can you load them too into the SS slots?

Your question is answered in the Safestrap thread - it's VERY DANGEROUS flashing without reading.
No you can't load "any ROM". It must be compatible with the kernel on your stock ROM.

Sorry if this has been answered before, but I haven't been able to get a definative explanation of the safest way to update to ME7.
Right now I'm running TWRP, with Carbon v1.8 (stable) and baseband I545VRUAMDK. Does updating your radio/baseband to ME7 affect the kernel? Or do you have to flash a custom kernel to switch to ME7? What's the advantage of flashing a custom ME7 kernel as opposed to the stock MDK kernel?
Sorry for so many questions, i'm just nervous about losing my loki'd recovery

You do not want an ME7 kernel due to the lockdown (at least yet).
You can safely flash the radio. It is separate from the ROM and the kernel.
You can safely flash any of the several ME7 ROMs from the dev section.

Thanks for the quick reply, are there specific instructions for only flashing the Radio? Is it just a flashable zip?

andybones has been nice enough to make flashable files for both the MDK & ME7 radios. You can find them both in post #2 from the BoneStock thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2384362.
You flash them from recovery much the same as you would a ROM. No need to do a full wipe though - at least as far as I know.
As of right now I am on ME7, full stock and I am trying to understand if I can update to MI1 and use Safestrap to use this either Eclipse TW 2.1 Beta 2 or AOSP 4.3 Eclipse 5.1 Build 6 ROM by using MI1 Kernel Modules for Safestrap. If I can't update to MI1 and use either of those, can I stay on ME7 and use one of them by using the kernel module mentioned on the Safestrap thread?
There's so many currently used versions of the S4, and I can't keep straight what can and can't be done, other than that MDK can do whatever it wants.

If you choose to update to MI1 with root, you can install the TW based Eclipse rom in SS along with the MI1 module, but you can run any AOSP based roms since they dont use stock kernal. Just make sure not to update to MJ7 since SS does not work with it yet.

Thank you so much. I am now happily running MI1 Stock w/ root and Eclipse 2.1 TW!
Hey Guys, I'm new to the Gs4, trying to understand the different recoveries
I have my gs4 on KK 4.4.2 NC5, and was able to get it rooted, get SS 3.72 installed and get the hyperdrive rom installed
As I understand it, this needed to be put on the stock slot.
I was looking around, and found a few other roms I would like to try Carbon, Beanstalk, Unicorn...
Am I safe to assume that these won't work with safestrap?
Would they work with another recovery?
Or being that im on NC5 I'm limited?
Thanks in advance!
You have no choice for recovery except safestrap. You can load any safestrap compatible rom...and can only go in Stock slot.
sent by safestrap powered echo v26
So if I wanted to try the other roms, I have to use stock slot of safestrap.
Is it tru that AOSP roms won't work on safestrap?

SS for Verizon android 4.4 is partially functional...limitations include making and installing to rom slots.
No asop or cm roms...There are a couple asop roms but not 100% functional. ...I have never tried
sent by safestrap powered echo v26
SO If I were to revert back to the stock rom, and remove SS.
Could I install another recovery, then try the other roms?

No choice except safestrap...read the stickie thread in general section...provides info and links on what you need to know.

Please, read the very basics about this phone. You either have MDK (which you DON'T(and which you CANNOT get, period) or you have safestrap. There's nothing else. But a little bit of reading goes along way with that question.

Hello there, xda! I've been having quite a few issues installing Cyanogenmod (and many other custom ROMs) onto my Gs4 and was wondering if someone might be able to walk me through the steps of installing the custom ROM on my specific device. I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 from Verizon with Android 4.4.2 and NC5 as my baseband.

If you don't have the MDK bootloader with the Loki hack, you cannot run CM and other AOSP based roms. There is a ROM however that's safe strap compatible

Thank you for that suggestion! But do you know if it's possible to downgrade from NC5 to MDK or earlier versions? I would rather do that than use safestrap, honestly.

Nope. Not possible at all. Your only option is Safestrap.

I haven't kept up much since since I installed safestrap 3.72 on ME7 and started using the Jellybeans rom. I'd appreciate if someone could answer a few questions I have after trying to read up on stuff.
I'd like to try the kitpop rom and it requires safestrap 3.75 a03 and NC5 or NK1. My main question is can I use my ME7 based rom still if I upgrade? I also read that the newest safestrap doesn't like backups from older versions, so is there a safe way to upgrade and keep my rom slot intact?
Thanks

Once you go to nc5 or nk1, as far as I know you won't be able to go back to me7. With the other question, I'm not on 3.75 so I'm not sure about back up issues.
I know I won't be able to get my phone back to ME7, but will it prevent an ME7 based rom from working in safestrap if I upgrade to NC5.

If you are on nc5 and flash to older than nc5 (and nc2) like a 4.3 mk2 rom, it won't work and you'll have to Odin back to nc5.
Brian
Thanks. Guess I'll stick with what I have, never been too adventurous with my phones.
