[Solved] Is an application incurring charges on my prepaid SIM? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone!
This is oreo27, I used to be a moderator in one of the more popular Symbian modding oriented forums. I recently switched to Android and I got most of my resources here on XDA. Firstly, I'd like to say that the wealth of information in this forum is amazing! I learned the basics of modding and was able to root my device and understand a lot of concepts in a matter of hours. :good:
In any event, I seem to be having an issue with the Galaxy S3 I9300 I'm using.
I only use this phone for the applications. The prepaid SIM I've placed is only for the data usage (paid daily) and I don't use it at all for SMS or calls. I've noticed that my prepaid top up/credits/load (whatever you call it in your place) has been reduced for no reason. I'm thinking that an application may be sending an SMS/making a phone call which is causing the charges.
My question is this, is there any application that can monitor/block outgoing SMS/Calls? I've resorted to messing with application permissions and I'm afraid that I may screw something up or worse, miss whatever application is causing this. I could call the carrier but I want to make sure these charges are not coming from my end first.
Hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

No, we don't. You are charged every time you use data. However, I was on a 24 hour unlimited data promo at the time the charge was incurred thus the suspicion of a rouge application sending an SMS/making a phone call.

If you use it for apps only a lot of them connect to the internet to work properly so will use data
You could try something like this app here to monitor usage it may help, you can search the play store for data usage app and you will get a lot to choose from if this one is no good for you.
You could also pull down the notification panel and turn off Mobile Data if not already done, its another thing to try to see of it stops the data charges being incurred.

The comments were left for the OP as he stated he was on an unlimited promotional data plan when it happened 'was on, not is on' and he pays for a sim but only uses it for data, not calls or text messages so what I linked him to will allow him to monitor this, if he does not find it helpful then really it is for him to tell me, or not bother responding, either way its his choice.

Yes, an SMS notification is sent to you to confirm the registration. It happened several hours before expiration. Unfortunately, I've already deleted the message by updating the device to 4.3 and wiping the device

Yes, I was on unlimited data when it occurred. Is there an application that can block all other applications aside from the default, from sending an SMS or making phone calls without my knowledge? That was the actual application that I was looking for. Sorry for the confusion.
That's the only explanation as to why the prepaid top up was reduced. Thanks for the prompt responses.

No, it hasn't thankfully.
In any event, I've resorted to manually revoking permissions of applications that have, in my best judgement, need of Sending SMS using an application called App Ops 4.3 / 4.4 KitKat. That should sort things out. From my understanding it's just a native application on 4.3 and above that's currently not accessible. I've been using it since today and everything seems in order.
Thanks to all the prompt responses

permanently delete text messages!

is there any way to permanently delete text messages.. so for instance if my phone was was sold on there was no way they could recover the data from it ?
Why, what you up to ??
I think a master reset would wipe it but I guess everything on the phone is still in memory but not accessable through normal means but if the CIA wanted to they'd give it to a data recovery company and get files back from ram like you can recover deleted flash files as long as they are not overwritten.
Though I dont realy know, just guessin.
If its real important then a big hammer always works
are you mental? texts are deleted permanently when you press delete. in fact, the entire thread of texts is. go on, try it. delete a text & try to get it back...

What? No. Do you even know how deletion works on any normal device today? It stays in memory until it's overwritten with something else. And even then it's possible to recreate the data.

it doesn't work like that.. the data will still be there.. it's just removed from the index so you can't get it through the normal user interface.... you'd need to do a full format of the intenal memory and then rebuild the phone system.. probably possible but I'm not interested enough to look for a solution!

You have raised a valid point regarding sensitive data on mobile devices, Its just like your PC but in your pocket.
Ive never sold a pc but if I did I think I would destroy the drives just in case. The same could be said for these phones with their gig of flash storing all your passwords, emails, texts, online banking details, ebay account details, paypal .. etc... Ok Im being a little paranoid here but its getting that way.
A security data wiper/writer could be a good app to develop.

I don't think you're paranoid. You have a valid point there! The amount of information we have that is critically personal is enormous! I never sell my phones to people outside my family and I probably never will.

you can get a program called kill disk for a pc which will totaly wipe all data from drive so nothing can be recovered! am sure it would be possible to do it for a mobile but as on pc you will need to reinstall your OS which in x10 case would be andriod.
The most secure way is using professional third-party software like iPhone Data Eraser, which is a reliable and effective tool to smash everything on your iPhone, including contacts, messages, photos, videos, apps, account info, passwords, photos and other personal data.

No...Can the unlock pattern be by-passed easily?
Try plan b from market.
Plan B from Lookout labs is a find my phone app that you download. AFTER you lose your phone. Thanks to the new Android market, all you have to do is: Login to the Android Market, Find Plan B and Install it. Plan B will start locating your phone using cell towers and GPS. It will email you the location every 10 mins. It works best if you have the GPS enabled already as the app can not do that by it'self.

Yeah pretty easily from my experience... Not sure how many people know how to though
Surely flashing a stock rom with repartition will remove it? You don't need the pattern to get in download mode. Sorry to hear about your loss.

They wouldn't even need to repartition... This is the only downside of an unlocked bootloader phone.
Thing is, thieves tend to be the lowest levels of civilisation, so will they know how to get it into download mode? Or how to correctly flash it in ODIN? Or do they even know about the possibility of such modes?
Yes, some thieves are smart, but most ain't.
I just don't want them to access my info...I rather they had to wipe it and keep the damn thing.
Will try the App also...thanks.

[Q] What's the best way to monitor questionable apps?

Sometimes, you grab an app where you have to question whether it's safe (even from the market).
You can always use Droidwall to block the internet access, but that doesn't mean the app isn't sending out SMS messages or making calls.
What's the best way to monitor apps to determine if they're safe?
I don't know if typical traffic counter apps would work for this type of situation, or if they only catch stuff a user does through the dialer or installed sms app.
You can try Lookout - http://www.mylookout.com I think you'd need the pay version, but you can try it out for 2 weeks and see if it does what you want. I just use the free version for now.
Thanks, but Lookout won't do what I'm looking for. Lookout will only scan for know viruses or trojans. It's not going to find custom coded malicious behavior.
I suppose the best compromise is to find an app that will log all incoming and outgoing SMS messages and calls. The problem is that I haven't found any that log the stealth messages/calls that don't go through the dialer and UI-based sms apps.
Download SystemPanel from the market - it runs in background, but shows you exactly which app uses how much CPU and time. Also plots battery drain/CPU usage etc... essential app! maybe not quite what you are after though......

Good link! But not useful here, for a couple of reasons:
1. As an example, apps may legitimately need to send sms messages. The goal in this case is to make sure they're only sending (or receiving) when they are supposed to - and not trying to sneak any past you.
2. It's a nice idea, but realistically, modifying permissions will break many apps.
The idea is to find out if an app is doing something it shouldn't, which means this is all about monitoring.

Well how do you suppose a security app is going to know if something is abusing permissions? For example, how does a security app distinguish between a legit sms being sent or non legit sms?
You say that a full monitoring app will fix your concerns. Well a typical phone is running 10+ applications at any given time. Imagine yourself being bombarded by constant notifications: app1 accessed internet, app2 read from SD card, app3 sent sms..... so on so on.... Not only will this get overwhelming in 10 minutes, it will probably drain your battery at a serious rate.
I think the answer to your concern is common sense. There's no reason to monitor 99% of apps. If you really feel some app is suspicious, just block it's permissions.

I never said I wanted notifications. An app that simply logged the info would be fine. I could go in once a day and check to make sure that all calls and sms messages sent and received were legitimate. Once I knew that an app was trustworthy, I could turn the logging off.

That doesn't work if blocking its permissions breaks the app. There are many apps coded by fly by night developers whom you don't know and have no reason to trust. If it's an app that doesn't have permissions to cause harm anyway, then it's no big deal. But if the app has permissions to send and receive sms and calls, you have no way of knowing what it's doing behind your back. I'm looking for an app that will answer that question.

Please resend. Didnt get a PM.
Not really a big problem but syncing LinkedIn contacts crashes the Contact app and the Phone app. I did not have any issues with syncing other contacts from apps such as G+, Facebook, or email clients. Just LinkedIn.

Not sure of this problem as it seems like you're the only one having the issue.
Did you do a CLEAN installation?

I did a clean install. Also saw someone else had the same issue posted in rmiller's thread. I 'll try another installation in a bit to see if it persists.

Go into your mobile networks and make sure you're on cdma/lte
Data loss..so when I'm out around town I'm only getting 3g where I usually get LTE and when I update profile I loose everything I have to restore a back up...no biggie I'm waiting for new rom but just wanted to let you know.

Not sure what the security log agent is but if you freeze it in TB, you stop getting the security warming.

I lose data off and on, on two different notes. Also Spen will randomly stop working as well. When it stops working, the phone will still know that it has been removed and air command will pop up like normal, but the pen won't do anything on screen. I have also tried the WiFi fix and I can connect to WiFi but can not use it.
