First of all this is not my original work but I finally figured out the parts that myself and many other 769ers have been hanging up on.
The real credit goes to Carloswii5 for the original guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2277639
He's done some amazing work so if this updated guide works for you head on over there and thank him, "pinoyto", "Lelus", and "cmahendra"
This truly wouldn't be possible without them.
From this point on I'm literally going to copy/paste Carloswii5's guide and just add in the mission critical things that I figured out were necessary to unlock the bootloader. I have tried it about 35 times and it wasnt until I added these steps in conjunction that it worked on my MS769
Any edits i make will be highlighted in red so if carlos wants to add these into his guide we can delete mine.

*OLD TUTORIAL*
Warning Just to let you know that this will Void your warranty you should already know that
Also this may look really long but its short just somewhat really specific
Hello Fellow Optimus L9 Users today I Bring you a tutorial on how to unlock bootloader the noob version for those who are new to rooting and stuff because there is another one that is more complicated and less specific but if you want to check it out heres
the link:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2198114
Okay First to let you know that when you flash V20B_00.kdz the screen will get kind
of funky everything will be inverted and backwards so dont worry. And one more thing is
that when you boot up every single time after doing this the boot will be mirrored. Just
to let you know.
First Just want to thank "pinoyto" "Lelus" and "cmahendra"
Okay Now to Start Download the zip containing the files link here Link dead Files contained
in the zip are "Adb" "Recovery image" "V6.bin" and "V20_00.bin"
After youve downloaded extract the files to a folder for later use.
If you are already running Jellybean go ahead and download the V10g tmobile KDZ. https://mega.co.nz/#!dRUTkICD!BncpLz1wK9Wm2feeV4-9iSMaeOIpmdIsjIFhkjs5PYgYou're going to need to flash to this then flash to V20B Europe Open
Now before we go to flash the V20.kdz Or V10.kdzenable "usb debugging"
. Use the Guide provided below to flash to V10G don't worry so much about root during this flash because you're going to root the next flash. After you downgrade you may have to factory reset in order to boot. This is accomplished by holding the volume down and home buttons, then while still holding them down press the power button for 3 full seconds and release while still holding the vol- and home button until the android comes on the screen signaling that you have successfully done this step.
Boot into V10.
Quickly go through the setup. and put the folder named Files that Go On SD Card on the SD card.
Very Important--->>> DISABLE YOUR LOCK PATTERN!! I cant stress this part enough!! I also disabled screen timeout and enabled "show touches " and "install from unknown sources" from the developer and security menu respectively.
If you haven't already moved the RootLelusJB folder to the root of your C drive do it now. Connect the phone to the computer and run the rootL9 batch file.
Now go flash the kdz with this tutorialhttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36351786 Make sure you root the phone by replacing the 11.bin
When you boot into V20B the lg logo should be backward and blue. If it is not then start over from V10G.
1)Now after you've flashed then comes the screen problem just unlock and go through the setup quickly
2) Connect your usb and make sure the usb debbuging icon pop-ups the little spider looking thing if thats enabled good
3) Okay next im not really sure if its needed but just do it change the usb
entrance to "LG Software Mode" to do this the simple way you need to disconnect usb and
connect again after than the options appear what type of usb entrance click on the back arrow
and it should select the "LG Software Mode"
Here is the most important part, you need an internet connection for the next step but not just any internet connection but a valid mobile data connection. you can connect to wifi also but you need mobile data so an unactivated sim will not work. if root was succesful you will be able to access the sd card from the file manager and install L9RecoveryInstaller_1.5.0.apk. After you install it, open it and install recovery, then boot into recovery. (this will be tricky due to the fudged up touch screen) when the phone boots to recovery use a mirror to see the words because it will be mirrored. Use the Volume Up/Down keys to navigate and Power button to select the options. first select "install zip", then "choose zip from /external_sd" then find "radio.zip" select it and install it. This will give you the cellular data signal necessary for the next part.
4) Now we want to connect to the WiFi THIS IS NECESSARY FOR IT TO WORK go and connect to it
after that make sure you are connected by opening the browser or youtube and if a page or
video loads your set now go make yourself a coffee or some thing because now you have to wait
30 or more minutes
5) Ok now that the 30 minutes or more have passed you need to go to the downloaded files and move
the "Android" folder to your "C:\" drive "dont worry just has adb files" now open a command prompt and
type the following
"cd c:\Android"
"adb devices" to make sure your phone is connected a list of numbers should appear
"adb reboot oem-unlock" and your phone should then reboot
then the lg logo will appear then a mirrored confirmation to unlock bootloader just press
the "Volume Up" button and it will confirm it skip the power button if you want to try the process below then hold the power button until it reboots
I skipped steps 6-8 by already having the ROM i wanted to flash on my sd card...
First i flashed the recovery through command prompt with "cd [directory with fastboot in it on your computer]" then "fastboot flash recovery [filename of the recovery image]" the recovery image needs to be in the same directory on your computer as fastboot. Then i entered "fastboot reboot recovery"
I recovery flashed the ROM then recovery flashed cwm_ts_fix_p769.zip that we put there earlier and did a factory wipe and Dalvik cache wipe then rebooted.
6) Now we need to go to "rooted 10g" again just go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2173465
and follow every single instruction but when you are about to enter the flashing process instead
of "Emergency" mode you need to put it to "Diag" mode and then start the flashing process
7) After you are done with that you cant boot so you must perform a wipe and the way of doing that
is too have phone off hold "Power button + Volume Down + Home Button" then you should see
a android with the little globe and a loading bar after its done it will turn off then
now reboot and after it boot it will be mirrored you can fix that but in my opinion it is a little more confusing
because the screen is still messed up the whole left side is inverted with the right side but if you still want to remove the mirror
you must press the power button once to turn off screen then again to turn on and it will be fixed but the touch is still inverted
8) Now go through setup and enable usb debugging and then u need to go to the superuser app
and if you dont have it you did not do the root process correctly go to it again "and if you need help just pm me"
open the app and update the binary after that go to your computer and open command promt again
and enter the following commands but before you must put the v6.bin file to your external sd card it is in the downloaded files after you have put it to the root
of your external sd card enter the following commands
"cd c:\Android"
"adb shell"
"su" when you enter this go to your phone and accept the su request
"cat /sdcard/external_sd/v6.bin > /sys/devices/virtual/input/lge_touch/firmware"
after you entered the last command you need to close that command promt and open
another one and type the following commands
"cd c:\Android"
"adb shell"
"su"
"reboot" then it will reboot and the touch will corectly work remember the mirrored problem will continue
to occur on your phone like i said just turn off screen then turn it on and it will be fixed
Now you have unlocked bootloader
If you want to install the cm10 rom the optimus L9 has as of right now you
have to do the following
1) Go to the app store and search for the app called "Nandroid Manager ROOT"
download the app and open it then go to flash recovery you must first put the recovery from the downloaded file to the
root of you external sd card and then go to the app and search for the recovery and flash it.
After you flash it you will have a recovery on your phone
(just to let you know it will be mirrored) but to boot to recovery you must turn off the phone
and then hold the "Volume UP + Home Button + Power Button"
now go download the cm10 rom from here " http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2216542 " put the file to the root of your sd card and then reboot to recovery and then to flash you will need to "wipe system, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache then flash" after you flash the zip reboot and you will have CM10 Hope This helped

Well there you go! as you can tell from the fact that there's not that much red writing that I don't deserve credit for this guide. I just added the parts that I found were missing to get it to go off flawlessly. Give Thanks Where Thanks Are Due!!

Awesome work man.. Will try this someime today.. Just got another glimmer of hope in my eye to unlock this thing.. Just out of curiousity, what is the DATE on your phone.. It's listed under the battery on the sticker with IMEI and all that.. Also, on the final flash v20b did you reboot or anything in between the 30 minute wait (heard that was an issue too at one point) Just scanned over it but seems like I was doing everything but the v10g step in the middle.. will go through it step by step and cross my fingers.. Thanks again to all that are working on this..
I'm not jumping on this until someone confirms that it works. That wonky screen and the waiting is a pain....better to just wait for the results.
Sent from my LG-P769 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
The date under my battery was 6/2013. Hope that brings new hope to some.
Sent from my kick ass KitKat CM11.0 lg MS769
And the only reboot I did between the v20b flash and the 40 minutes I waited was the reboot to recovery to fix the radio.

Best of luck. Take your time and report back. Oh and if when you flash to v20b you don't get a backward blue lg logo on boot, don't bother waiting to send the command it won't work, just start over from v10g. I noticed the only time it went blue was when I went from 10g to 20b and every time I see a successfully unlocked boot loader its backwards and blue.

Thanks.. From what I get from the guide, the only reason to use l9root is to install l9recovery correct? so I could just use an easier method of rooting like cydia impactor? all I've done so far is making a backup, factory reset, do the basic setup, installing v10g at the moment..
If you try that and it doesn't work (I don't see why it wouldn't) I only ask that you try the way I posted before you give up. That way we'll know for sure if the new guide works for others.

If cydia impactor does work though I'll be sure to update the guide to reflect that. It may just open the door to the masses and unlocked l9's won't be the minority. Lol.

Of course.. can only give it one shot for now.. did have to factory reset on v10e cause it hung at boot, good to go.. flashing v20b now..
V10E? Or V10G? 10E is the metro jellybean .kdz and it won't work. V10G I'd the t-mo ICS .kdz

I'm going to assume you meant 10G because of the wipe that was necessary before it booted.

Yeah I did.. typo.. and reason i was asking about cydia impactor is kuma82 made a .bat file that automatically runs cydia, installs su, busybox and L9 Recovery.. don't even have to touch the wonky screen..
Can you link that post? I'll put it into the guide if that's the case.

I'm still working on the script, but it will be real sweet once I have it finished.
Just so you know you don't need to drop down to 10g, one of the main thing is getting the inverted lg logo at boot (euro u-boot).
My program will also have an option to flash the inverted u-boot and then it will issue the unlock command.

I rooted my LG recently to get rid of the crapware that was on by default. But, of course, it wasn't enough for me. I tried to flash a new ROM, and everything went to hell. Now the boot screen won't go past the LG logo. Does anyone know how to reset the device back to factory standard?
Hard reset doesn't work (home + volume down / up + power)
Windows/Linux doesn't see the plugged in device.
adb doesn't see the plugged in phone
I tried to put cyanogenmod on, which was probably a bad idea. I've heard that this problem may be irreperable, and I just want to see if there's any way to avoid having to try and deal with Verizon.
Before flashing (using rom manager), I made sure to choose the backup the current rom option. I've heard that I should be able to restore that backup, but there's no way to actually connect to the phone at the moment.
Any help would be appreciated.
EDIT: I've gained access to the SD card by plugging it into an external reader. I can see the recovery image that clockwork made. How can I get the phone to boot into it?

I read a few posts mentioning that they were able to reset their phone using their ac adapter, but I hadn't any luck trying it that way, until a good friend of mine used some google-fu to determine that the order in which you do things matters! Here's the steps I had to take:
Remove battery from phone
Begin holding power, volume down and home
Plug phone into ac power WITHOUT LETTING GO OF BUTTONS (wasn't easy for me either)
Phone should boot into recovery (in my case the custom recovery)
You can let go of those buttons now
Install battery
Flash your phone and rejoice!
THANK YOU! The part I wasn't getting was the plugging into A/C while holding the buttons down...you're a lifesaver!!!
This did not work for me. I tried putting the phone into recovery mode, but it still just booted up as normal. I'm running out of ideas and patience here...
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
Lgtools
I recovered my friend's phone using the following procedure
I just fixed a friends phone so I thought I would share in case it helps anyone. This is for the LG Vortex on Verizon. Might work for other carriers.
Download and install the Vortex drivers from LG's mobile support site www dot lg dot com/us/support/mc-support/mobile-phone-support.jsp
Download and install the LG Mobile Update utility www dot lg dot com/us/support/mc-support/mobile-phone-support.jsp
Run the LG Update app and make sure your phone is up to date. You can also try the Recover option if it can't update. This phone's firmware was up to date.
Install the Android SDK from google.
Access backdoor recovery through ADB
Plug phone in to laptop usb
Press and hold down the volume down key, the home key, and the power key at the same time. Keep them pressed until the screen goes black then you can release. If it goes in to some other visible recovery you can simply skip some of these steps
At this point your computer should start to recognize the phone and go through a series of driver installs
Once that is complete you should be able to go to the command line and enter the ADB shell
Follow the procedure at the following link to get the clockworkmod recovery installed
androidforums dot com/getitnowmarketing/330813-all-one-recovery-thread.html
Once you are able to boot in to clockwork, immediately do a backup. Then clear your data, cache and dalvik cache, then reboot. This won't always work, but many times it will allow you to boot a ROM that gets stuck booting (like this phone). If that doesn't work then just go back to recovery and utilize a manual ROM flashing procedure you can find on many forums.
This process worked great on this phone so hopefully someone else may have similar luck.
Sorry for cutting up the links, i'm new to the forum. Just replace the "dot"s with . obviously.
Try this worked for me
Here's a different method of unbricking your vortex V660. With limited support and methods for this device it seems to make everything more complicated in finding a soluttion around certain but complex problems. I tried to use some of the other metheds listed on android central and XDA...such as, taking the battery out, holding home, vol -/+ and power key at the the same time the phone back in while it was connected to the computer. I wasnt able to get anywhere with these methodes,I also thought qbout trying the unbutu method to unbrick it then I thouht that was to much of an effott. I read all the comments and differnt methods and decide it wasn't worth the risk, I re-woked a different method for unbricking, there's prob about a 90% possibility of it working for your LG.This just happenes to be my own solution or workaround if you find yourself screwed like i did with no type of support.
The reason this didn't work was because I didn't have cwm installled nor did the phone have the original firmware installed, my mistake, I wiped that off too, happenes when you have to much to drink lol, the hard reset buttons were a no go as well since they take you into cwm or the orignal firware from verizon {all mine did was take me to a black screen because there was nothing there for it to load.} Some how or another all was wiped clean and I was in a catch 22 while being bricked. I found the vs660 recovery firmware but I knew i really didn't need to install it so i didn'nt.The bricked happened after I installed Titanium Backup then uninstalled launcher pro so then I restarted and got to the point where the ring Fire or boot animation was trying to load ,and it just just hung there. I don't care for the app launcher pro I would rather use awd launcher, if u haven't noticed you have to pay for the pro version of launcher pro just to rezize widets, so im wondering why this app was added to the Rom Cyan7.2 in the first place. So with no cwm, no stock image, and no way to make an sdcard boot into m to unbrick it my hopes and last resort were to pray that.I had usb debugging enabled.
First thing you have to install is called jdk-7u3-windows-i586] the other file called installer_r_windows wont't allow you to install until the install of JDK is complete. It'd ok to lauch the installer-r26-windows first because it ill drnf you directly to the site to downloadthe JDK file. Install these two programs first, (google how to ADB tutoria if needed? So after downloading that you will need to download the right drivers (for the voerex) Software name (Driver_WHQL_ML_Ver_4.9.7_All_Win7_LGEAll)(Google Search It)} There's 1 other thing we to have to do before seeing if your decice is listed in ADB. We need to add a line to the Envioronment Varibles section under System Variables at the bottom. Here's how to get there in Win7, right click on my computer, advanced tab, at the bottom Environmental Variblesm, click itlook down under system variables and scrooldowm until you see something called Path and add this line to end of it, ofcourse clickit edit then copy and past his line including the semicolon ;c:\android-sdk-windows\tools;c:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools now save it amd exit. The reason this is done is so we won't have to contantly navigate through cmd prompt to the directory and list commands. This is prevent you from have to navigate to the folder evertime u want to run the program or any cmds. Now that were all setup lets connect to you phone's data cable to the pc and the phone, and again make sure abd debugging is enabled. Settings, applications, development, the check in the box for debugging, if it's not enabled you will get the turn on usb feature your phone so not what we want. Now opem the cmd prompt run the cmd cd.. then cd.. now you should C:\>, you can run the cmd adb devices now hit enter and you you see a long 14 to 16 digit # then that means your devices is succesfully connected and talking to your PC.That long # should be your MEID HEX# to your phone if you dont see that and you see somethine else then go back though the guide to see if you missed something during setup. If setep properlly in the cmd prompt type adb devices and your phone will automactically show its long#, after that type the cmd adb reboot at which point through cmd promt the device will reboot itself. Here a little secret just because you don't have youtr verison's orignal firmware nor a working ROM on you phone such as froyo 2.2.1 or 2.2.2 doesn't mean anything, you are still rooted and wont have to downgrade to 2.2.1. Side note ( z4root didn't work for my lg vortex, I tried gingerbreak 1.10 and later gingerbreak 1.2 which both worked just fine, z4root just hung on my phone, sry i bounced off topic but i took me 24 hrs of troubleshooting till I got it back up and running.
This method I would say this only applies to the ones that don't have cwm installed on their internal drive it acccidently wiped the original firware off their phones and don't have anything to boot into. I don't have the orignal verizon stock installed, essentially you hit the same buttons on the phone to do a hard reset or to boot into recovery as you normally would. If you neiher on your phone then ADB is your saving grace. Another tutorial I seen was something about installing ubuntu lunux, it just seemed liked to muck work for me, plus I didn't want linux on my box anyways, not til im ready for building a linux kluster later.
let get started...go and download the Adb software which is called Android-debug-brigde...you will also have a visual demo to guide you through the setup) (ADB file) name installer_16-windows,install this this file last to the root of C:/ once done its location will look like this c:\android-sdk-windows ( this is important to make sure you extract the exe to C:/android-sdk-windows (you can take advantage of youtube's a great resourse for viual walkthroughs} or google it,.i have had to do i know's our there , well if you more of a reader search google or xda it will breakdown the core or the installing of the actual files can't post links here but you have to post a minimum if 8 tines b4 you can post links outside this site.
Once all that's setup you need to confirm that its linked properly. Phone off or on during this process I wouldn't think it matters,my devices were on, so conntect you data cable to you usb port and the other end to your phone where you normally power it. This is the time you better hope USB Degugging is enabled. If it is you will see the little Android character and something that looks like a usb icon in the status bar of your phpne, so if you pull down your status bar is will tell your if you are in use debugging mode,. in the status bar depending on where your bricked. if you are in a booploop all its going to do it make that noise of connecting and disconnting. you may have to find fifferent approach to fix it, only solution I can give you if to try home, vol +, and power down til you get a black screen and hope it hangs there there long enough to so you clear it. So it this aproach words on a bootloop let me know in the comments.
Once everything looks good open up your device manager
Just under your computer mame u should see somethig called ADB Interface
under that from the drop arrow you will see android plactform sooner single ADB Interface, click on that and you will see android plattform sooner single ADB Interface, then under modems you will see LGE Android Platform USB Modem, and last at the bottom your youw will see universal serial bus controllers, select that and you should your see LGE Android Platform Composite USB Device, If you see all that that your 100% convered
Now to get your phone out of that nasty brick and we don't need need any firware or Roms to do it...
Open cmd prompt, type cd.. then cd.. again now your in C:\>
now type cd android/sdk/system (note the CD just means change directories) now were in the folder called c:\android-sdk-windows
From this directory is where were going to run our commands since we can't do it in cwm.
type wipe system and hit enter
wipe system you will see a alot of errors like it didnt do anything but that's ok next step
type wipe data hit enter
once done pull cable reboot phone wait to it to come up to where to you have to touch the andoid like your setting up the phone for the first time again, warming u more that lickly will get an FC during setup and it will brick again on the same screen. Repeat wipe system and wipe data again, the gp though the setup on the phone again, if have have another FC one last time so again wipe system then wipe data, this time there shouldn't be anymmore FCs, I have to go through wipe system and data 3 times b4 the FC's stooped and I will able to to to the activaton screen > My phone is a refurb so if would let me past the activation screen this time as when im loading up in CM7. last issue I faced was the accivation screen, Now I did some reading on this and there are a couple of thing you can one of which worked for me., You can tap the four counrers in the clockwise direction which didn't work for me, or what did, I click activcate then entered *228 then hung up, avtivate again *228 hungup, then activate again,*228 hugnup and this time I was able to skip activation anb and was again to load cwm and flash my phone, so its not longer bricked and I dont have to worry about the avivation all though it will comes up U can stip it and It wont keep me from me phone, I have VIOP setup over my 4g LTE, any questions about this type hack just let me know, ( I have an 18 Page Paper about how it works how to set it up, its free and no download charge for the APK) and I will post it. Forwaring the paper 18 pages long and pretty in depth, I dont explain the backend of how it works but just a little, its mainly the frontend and to set it up and all the routing.
I also have video demonistrations on youtube for bypassing the registration of your Nook Color

Vortex sux
Okay ... so my vortex is nothing more than a paper weight at the moment. When I turn it on, the LG screen comes on for 3 seconds, then the screen goes blank, then it starts over again. I can't turn it off after it starts its boot loop. I have tried using the recovery keys, and nothing. If I plug it into the computer it will turn on and do the loop over and over again, and i still cant power off. I have a 4gb micro with cwm recovery, but i do not know how to get this phone to boot into the cwm recovery. your help would be appreciated.
Here's what worked for me

I was in a similar situation and was able to get to recovery by taking out the battery, holding down the buttons required to get into recovery and then while holding down the buttons, plugging the phone into the wall charger. Once it was in recovery I put the battery back in and flashed back to a known good rom. Not sure why this worked over just turning it on normally, but it's worth a shot.
Ok, so I rooted my LGOG E970. I figured I better unlock it as well, so I used FreeGee and unlocked it. I tried to download CWM but it said it couldnt download file. So I thought I would reboot my phone. Now, all I get is the google logo, with the unlocked key underneath, and it then goes to the LG logo and back to Google and shuts off. I tried to hold down power and volume down, nothing, and power volume up nothing.:crying:
any ideas? Thanks in advance! I love this phone!
CJ
You too, huh?
I did this the other night, and when the CWM failed to install I went to download it myself... That's when I saw that CWM for geeb is 6.0.3.8, not 6.0.4.5 like FreeGee shows. (Looks like FreeGee has moved on to targeting G2 or another... Oops.)
I hope you backed up your EFS, because mine was screwed up and I needed to manually restore it from the backup I'd taken. (I've had my phone rooted for 9+ months, finally got fed up with stock and was looking to get onto a 4.4 ROM)
So here's what I did:
Held power button until phone was properly off (failed boot seemed to be a still partially on state)
Held volumn up first, then started holding power.
When phone vibrated slightly, I let go of power and kept holding volume up... You should be in boot loader now.
When your phone is in the bootloader, connect to your PC (Make sure you have the proper drivers if you use Windows; I use Linux which doesn't have the same nonsense setup for drivers like Windows does)
Make sure "fastboot devices" shows your phone and then type: fastboot flash recovery _____recovery file name.img____
Press volume down twice to select "Recovery", and press power once to select it... You should be booted into the recovery that you just installed.
Once you're in a recovery, you can push a ROM zip via ADB, flash, wipe data/dalvik cache and reboot.
thanks, Just a little more help

Yeah, the stock recovery won't boot if you try it either. I forgot to tell you that. If you drop in a custom recovery (TWRP or CWM), it will work fine and you can both create a backup of your data and flash a new ROM...
If you want to try to get back to stock, LGNPST is what you should try. But to be completely honest, I don't know if you can LGNPST from the state that it's in. I haven't tried, and I'm using a custom ROM now (the whole reason I unlocked the bootloader to begin with).
bummer

Yeah, I got that too. I don't know if I got it fixed due to changing ROM, using the suggested recovery from the ROM, or if it was due to me restoring my EFS backup.
I flashed the TeamWin recovery found in the PSX instructions. Then I flashed PSX + Latest kernel + Banks Gapps + Banks Google Camera + AT&T NFC fix + SuperSU. I manually restored EFS from an ADB shell while in recovery.
When I booted I had: LTE works, Wifi works, NFC works, Camera works, ART works... The only things failing for me are the following:
Cell provider shows up as "Maritime" (display bug; as mentioned, LTE works fine and I'm on AT&T)
Settings > Developer Tools > Geeky Process Stats (does nothing)
Settings > Lockscreen > Slider Shortcuts (crashes as soon as I tap the middle ring)
LogCat is spammed with "QCOM PowerLock: Failed to acquire lock" whenever my finger is on the screen.
/system/xbin/mount --bind doesn't work (neither does mount -o bind). It gets sorta half-way-there, because the target directory can't be removed, but isn't bound properly it seems.
Other than that, it's been fast and smooth.
So I have some great news for all you US Cellular owners out there. I have found a way to root the Mega. To my knowledge this is THE FIRST ROOT FOR THE US CELLULAR MEGA. This will only work for the 4.4.2 version so make sure you have updated or flashed it in odin.
I hope this tutorial isn't too confusing. Sorry I'm not a good teach but I want to get this out to the people who are having trouble getting rooted.
Things you will need:
1. SCH-R960 Device (US Cellular Galaxy Mega)
2. A good micro usb cable. Preferable the cable that came in the box.
3. A PC
4. Odin 3.09 http://odindownload.com/
5. CWM Recovery http://fs1.d-h.st/download/00066/7VS/i9200-cwm-recovery(201362118259).tar
6.And the actual root file http://download.chainfire.eu/446/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.99r3.zip?retrieve_file=1
Note:The CWM and root files say they are for the i9200 version. They work fine for the SCH-R960
Ok first you need open Odin and plug your device into your PC. If the connection is successful then the box at the top left corner will turn light blue.
Put your device into download mode put hold volume down+home+power until a screen appears, then press volume up.
Click on the AP button and browse to the folder you placed CWM in and choose the file.
Make sure you dont change any settings in odin or check or uncheck any boxes, Click Start
Odin will do its thing and the phone will reboot.
After it passes the Samsung Galaxy Mega screen it is safe to unplug the device from the PC
Let the phone boot.
After it boots you need to close odin plug your usb cable back into the phone.
Find the SuperSUUPDATE.zip file and place it onto the root of either the internal storage or external SD card. (I used the internal storage)
Now you can unplug the usb cable from the phone and power it off.
Boot into Recovery by using the volume up+home+power keys until you see the first screen pop and the release.
You should now be in recovery mode.
Using the volume rockers and power button, choose intsall zip update package
Choose zip from sdcard
Then navigate to where the .zip file is located
When you find it, click on it and choose yes
Then choose Go Back
Reboot System Now
Then you should see a screen that says at the top "ROM may flash stock recovery on boot. THIS CANNOT BE UNDONE.
(These next 2 steps are very important)
Choose "Yes - Disable revocery flash"
Then choose 'Yes - Fix Root"
The device will restart
After reboot, you will see an icon in your app tray called SUPER SU
Don't open it yet.
Open the Play Store and search Super SU
You should see that it is installed but needs an update.
Go ahead and click update.
When you open the app most likely you will get a message that says Binary needs updated. Choose yes.
For the next pop-up choose normal (This step can take a few mins)
After it is completed it will say "Samsung Knox has been detected" choose OK to disable
This step also can take some time if you are on the screen for more than 1-2 minutes close the app and uninstall from the play store and repeat these steps.
Now you should be rooted. You can check this by install an app called Root Checker Basic
I hope this helps everyone in getting rooted.
Anyway to..
Is there anyway I could use TWRP instead of CWM for the custom recovery in this process?? Thanks!

Question this work for mega i527 4.4.2
I was told that for Galaxy Mega Sprint L600, root and SIM unlock is only possible if Android version is 4.2.2. Now my question is, does this method work for L600 that's on Android 4.4.2 too?

Can you still get into twrp? With the phone off hold power and vol down til LG logo comes up the release and press again after. Should take you to a menu, just hit yes. If it takes you to recovery just hit factory reset and it'll,take you to twrp. If so, I'd recommend putting a Rom onto an sd and flashing it. You'll lose everything but it's better then losing this beautiful phone

You obviously didnt read his post correctly. He stated that when he gets to the factory reset area which leads you to Recovery Mode/TWRP it shows the LG logo appears and nothing happens.
As for you my friend if you are able to somehow get into download mode with a button combination you have a chance at saving yourself by using a TOT or KDZ file to restore your phone to stock software. But i also have a question for you.........Why the hell would you allow an app to flash a recovery file that has nothing to do with BUMP'D? The Bump'd recovery for our phones is specific to our phones! You should never auto update any recovery unless stated its ok from the Bump'd developers, Which they never did or will because our TWRP Recoveries are different than any other phones because of the bump'd implementations with in them and the boot.img's. Sounds to me like you may have screwed up your partitions and/or boot stack. Your are better going on IRC and requesting the help of TheCubed/IOMonster and AutoPrime, but mark my words you will face some heavy criticism from members of the IRC channel when you explain this story to them. But they are always willing to help.
I dont know why i have done it,im new on Lg.Before i had an HTC there is so many other.I will aks that guys.I hope i can save my new phone.

"Erasing" Loop - Tried Returning to Stock After Converting to US998 from H933
I rooted my phone using LGUP and tried to switch back to stock; hoping to keep root. I flashed all items except "recovery" but then tried to re-flash just the stock recovery, as stated in on one of the posts I found, and now I think I have a paper weight. I made sure to read the instructions a few times before doing things, but guess I missed something, or the instructions I followed aren't for my version or may be outdated?!
I can't get into download mode. The PC doesn't recognize I've even plugged it in. And now it just keeps boot looping showing the Erasing Circle over and over and over.
Anyone here know if I have any hope that once the battery dies, I could plug it in, holding the volume up, and be able to get into download mode? I'm hoping I can... Not a happy camper right now.
I see the thread title now. Let me respond in a few minutes.

You didn't root your phone with LGUP. You rooted your phone with TWRP and Magisk. You used LGUP to convert to US998 so you would have fastboot flash commands to unlock bootloader and install TWRP, so you could then root with Magisk.
Why don't you ask in thread where you were following the directions? Yes, it is tedious and complicated for the H933 -- but the end result is you WANT TWRP custom recovery and Magisk, but you want to eradicate all traces of US998 firmware.
I still don't have any answer to my question though...

I appreciate you taking the time to reply. You are correct in saying I didn't root with LGUP. I mistyped/misspoke. There are so many threads that I read, I can't find the one I was following. I had 15 tabs opened; I freaked out, and so I created a new thread for my problem. My problem doesn't really involve any particular thread now because it's not even booting up - in order for me to do anything.
I see the LG logo.. then sometimes I see the stupid bootloader warning, then back to LG logo for a few seconds and then it says "Erasing" in bold vibrant colouring.. then it shades out barely visible for 10-15 secs. Turns off, then basically repeats.
I know about all the flashable zips for H933.... but ALL of them say NOT to use them to convert back from US998 to H933.
Here is a thread (step 5) which basically everyone else posts also, that says you flash the kdz - everything except recovery - and twrp should be installed. This is not true. I did this about 6 times and could never boot into recovery afterwards. It would erase the phone and go back into setup mode each and every time.
I couldn't find any article to explain how to get back to stock firmware without using the kdz, which I did, and unselecting recovery. When doing so, twrp was gone - despite me not selecting recovery or even recovery.bak sometimes. So what I did was, use LGUP again with the kdz and uncheck everything except recovery and recovery.bak the 2nd time around and bam... now I am stuck.

Who said you couldn't use H933 after US998? You're fine if you use partition DL.
I have gone from US998 to H933 several times.
I'm currently on my commute to work but let me read your issues and see if we can't get you back to normal.
( I'm pretty active in modding our H933 )
Don't touch recovery.bak; only deselect recovery.
So where are you currently?
And after you pull your phone from PC after not selecting recovery are you pulling your phone and trying to master reset to access recovery or letting LGUP auto boot into twrp? Should happen as soon as H933 attempts to boot.

Have you tried Master Reset to stop the boot looping? Master Reset is not factory reset.
Master Reset -- using buttons:
1. Unplug phone and turn it OFF.
2. Press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons.
3. When the LG logo appears, quickly release the Power button only -- then immediately press Power button again, while STILL pressing the Volume down button until you see the screen to select Yes to erase and reset everything.
4. Release both buttons so you can make your choices.
With your device powered off, press and hold the Power button and Volume Down buttons simultaneously for a few seconds.
When the LG logo appears, quickly release and then re-hold the Power button while keep holding the Volume Down button.
Let go of the buttons when the onscreen menu appears.
When you see the option to Delete all user data (including LG and carrier apps) and reset all settings message prompt, press the Volume Down button to highlight Yes.
Then press the Power button to reset the device.
Wait until the reset is complete then reboot your device. If it’s able to boot up successfully, proceed with the initial setup.

You can even do it if you can not power the device off, but you just have to time it right.
This is the most complete guide of what you were probably trying to do, if trying to go back to stock and keep root:

@christopherrrg wrote a "little guide" for the peoples, who may ever have thought about going back to h33 original (rooted or not) sw. Give him some thanks pls, he's now a few nerves lost in this procedure i can imagine :good: thanks!
Here it is:
Okay so the steps below are for AFTER using the WTF thread to convert device and unlock bootloader; these steps are for canadian model users who would prefer to go back to stock canadian kdz with working root and twrp intact.
Step 1 - Attach converted US998 (bl unlocked and twrp installed) to LGUP.
Step 2 - PARTITION DL the canadian kdz but do not include recovery.
Step 3 - Let phone boot right from kdz flash and it will automatically boot TWRP.
Step 4 - While in TWRP; 1st factory reset AND AFTER format data then reboot recovery. (If not done TWRP has mount issues with cache and or system.)
Step 5 - After TWRP is rebooted flash no-verity-opt-encrypt-6.0.zip + lg-rctd-disabler-1.0.zip and afterwards flash magisk.
Step 6 - While still in TWRP use the option to power device down.
Step 7 - Attach device to PC while holding vol+ and it will automatically start download mode.
Step 8 - PARTITION DL the canadian kdz again EXCEPT uncheck everything BUT stock recovery; let it flash and reboot.
Step 9 - Should reboot 3 - 4 times.
Step 10 - Once booted to setup; get past then activate USB debugging, also open magisk and click yes as many times as it asks you. (Magisk remains because only RECOVERY is flashed at this point)
Step 11 - Download TWRP and rename to just twrp then place it in the root directory of your internal storage.
Step 11 - Connect device to android debug bridge, and start a shell with 'adb shell' command.
Step 12 - then type 'su' and hit enter in order to gain root privilege. (Will have to click accept on super user on device)
Step 13 - then type 'dd if=/sdcard/twrp.img of=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/recovery'
If done correctly you should see flashing (almost like fastboot) however you will not have anything happen to your device graphically SO open magisk and click modules then click reboot to recovery and profit!
You should be on H933 kdz with TWRP and root.
However for some weird reason, cloud is correct as the battery drain is abysmal. My phone used to go from 9am 100% to about 60% by the time I get home at 5pm. Today it's gone down to 22% from 100% at 9am and it's only 2pm. @cloud1250000's brain was mostly picked for this so he deserves any and all credit; I just confirmed and wrote this up for reference.
Enjoy!

Also; I realize my guide in seadersn posts need a bit of an update so I will message him today and have him update as a ton of people are using it for reference and that guide has battery issues. (Without doing dd etc)
Try following this guide to the letter.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/how-to/canadian-h933-compatibility-h930-roms-t3897586
Just replace the latest with 20i (h933)
Make sure to read my post inclusive at the end of that thread; feel free to PM me as well if you can't get anything the way you want it.
Unfortunately I can't do anything with the phone when I connect to my PC with the USB cable - except when holding power and both Cole buttons, i can get it to load a page with the imei number etc.
I can also (by holding power and toggling both volumes) get it to recognize on my PC, but it shows up at QSLoader 9008 (or something like that - I'm at work right now so can't type exactly what it shows up as - but know 100% it says 9008).
I installed QPST and will see if I can flash it this way, after I figure out a way to create/find the firehouse. I found a YT video showing how to create the files needed so will give it ago when I get home.
I am grateful of the replies. I'm sure you get many idiots like myself who do stupid crap - so thank you for always still wanting to help. It must be annoying but us idiots are truly grateful!!

This sounds like what had happened to me with the RSA after flashing modem.bin. I only got lucky because my TWRP flashed successfully and I was able to restore using seadersn stock method. I've never gone as far as actually putting my device into 9008 brick (yet) so unfortunately I'm not much help there and for that I'm sorry. However there is a gent on ebay who will TeamViewer to your PC and fix it for you. A lot of people report it has a different device firmware but they do report success.
Also don't beat yourself up and call yourself an idiot.
Us humans are curious creatures! While it does suck for your device; it's just a speed bump!
