What exactly is ME7 - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

What exactly is me7 and mdk and etc..? I have a good guess, but not sure if I am right. Are they chipsets?

They are the last three letters of your phones build numbers. They change when there is an OTA update for your phone. To check what your build is, go to Settings - More - About phone. Scroll down till you see "Build number". It will say something like "I545VRUEMJ7".

Lets say your phone is made and software #1 is loaded on it then revisions or updates happen for any number of reasons leading to #2 and so on. Of course theres more behind the updates but thats kind of a general idea. With the s4 on verison the phone has went from mdk to me7, ml1, mj7 now mk2.

What's a safe way to update to the latest, but keep root? I'm coming from an HTC Thunderbolt, so this is all a bit different.
Here's my stats - I'm stock rooted

You can use this thread here to keep root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2504408
However, there is a root method for the latest builds that are considered safe and easy. It really doesn't matter. The thread I linked requires you to purchase SuperSU Pro so keep that in mind.

That's a good question. I suppose if you're on bone stock ME7 you could try the survival mode in SuperSU and take the OTA but I'm not sure. I think it may even update you to MI1 first, and then you might have to do survival mode again to get to the latest build. Someone who has done this will hopefully chime in with some clarification.

All of the current I545 updates have a root method available. Go ahead and update. BUT STOP AT MK2.
There's no guarantee that whatever comes out next will be rootable.

I have tried at least 5x's on 2 seperate wifi networks to update and it fails every time. I was rooted prior. Now unrooted and bootloader is locked. I checked all files and there is no trace of any recoveries in my files..anyone know what I can do? Even if I can stop the prompt to update would be great.

Youre still on mdk which is good. If you lost root youll have to reroot. Rename sdm.apk to sdm.apk.bak or delete if you so choose and itll stop the notifications. Quite a few threads on this as well

There's a root method, but it's a gimped one. Only update if flashing recoveries, roms, kernels, etc is unimportant to you.

I am fine with stock rom and root.
BTW, I found the issue....
I had updated the sound files to boost the level outputs in system/etc/snd_soc_msm folder. When I was using the recovery method to install the update stored in /cache/fota that's when the error presented itself (instead of just "update failed"). As a good boy, I kept the original files and just pasted them over the modded ones. The update is flashing as we speak. As long as I have root file access and maybe tethering, then I'm good.
I WOULD like to tinker with ROMs, but, there isn't time for that anyways.

What do I need for root?

Hey how's everyone doing, I've recently acquired a Galaxy Note 3 and was wondering what would I need to do in order to root? I been reading a bit but theres a lot of things I don't understand like NAB~ or knox~
I've been done this before on my old Samsung Intercept back in sdxdevelopers, moved over here after acquiring an Evo 3D and was familiar with all the stuff, then I got an S4 but didn't have it long enough to root it, now I want to root my Note 3 but I'm not sure if theres something I should do before rooting
This is what I have right now still stock straight from the Sprint Store

Best advice is to read around, these questions have been asked so many times, people are starting to ignore them. Take an hour and read up on the forums and you will find all the answers you need, if you get stuck with something in particular, ask in that thread. Best of luck.

The current systems people are using are, mj4, na4, nab, nabd; nab and nabd are the Kit Kat versions most are on, you are currently on mj4 (jelly bean). Knox is just security crap built into the phone, if you flash a recovery on your phone it will trip knox changing the setting to 0X1, basically a way they can see if you screwed with your phone and it might void your warranty should you have to return the phone. You can follow the directions in this post to help and if you run into problems, ask there, best advice is to read it all and then go from there, plenty of people there that will help if you stumble. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2630514

No real difference between NAB and nabd, use either one. If you take the update, which I would, it will put you in version nab and then all you have to do is root and flash a recovery and then good to go.

Put the .tar file on SD card.
Open Mobile Odin pro.
Scroll down to open file. Press it.
Choose the .tar file.
Checked Enable EverRoot and Inject Superuser.
I choose to wipe dalvik cache which is optional.
Pressed flash firmware and that's it!

Possible Root For Note 3 VZW?

My reading comprehension skills may be a little off but from what I gather here is that you can root using old methods but just making sure you use an updated CWM? I'm not sure if I should try it or not. Does this make sense to you guys?

That guide is ancient and not applicable. You can only use root apps as intended if you have root. If KK 4.4.4 or Lollipop then no root and currently no way to get it. There is no downgrade to any rootable version if you are running 4.4.4 or above. I was happy to stay rooted with 4.3.
And we wonder why boot loaders are locked these days.
I'm hoping this exploit...
https://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/155412

(So sad to hope for holes in your phone so you can have freedom)

Just checked the "how to see if you are vulnerable" post/comment by a guy named Charlie (https://www.nowsecure.com/blog/2015...em-user-on-samsung-phones/#comment-2086888243)
If his method of checking is correct, NK1 would be considered vulnerable to this exploit. One step closer.
doesnt look like 5.0 has the vulnerability but from what ive read we can downgrade to nk1, hopefully

VZW Note 3 all Android versions (4.4.4 NJ6/NK1 & 5.0 OB6) are vulnerable. However, this gives SYSTEM (uid=1000) not ROOT (uid=0) access. SYSTEM user is capable of writing to many places on the file system, and this makes it easier to implement a weaponized ROOT exploit, if/when available.

You need to pull the Kingroot SU. Get terminal emulator and a batch file. Kingroot to SU. File ES to extract the zip. Google is your friend.
