[Q] Where do I go from here? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hello people of xda,
I've got a verizon galaxy s4 running a version of safestrap, I used to run a stock jelly bean rom but swapped back into touchwhiz with the google home launcher instead and erased the JB partition. I'm thinking it would be refreshing to jump back into stock kit kat.
Really, I'm only after the ability to run a recovery and flash roms :/
My phone is still on ME7 and I'm not able to update through the prompts.
I would preferably like to root/unlock/update(or downgrade)/get a kit kat rom running. Are there still restrictions with unlocking these?
Hopefully someone knows this stuff off hand and can let me know without much trouble
Thanks!

There aren't any KitKat ROMs available for our S4. Furthermore, your only option for custom ROMs is Safestrap.
I suggest you do A LOT of research before you jump in.

I've already done a lot of research, there are plenty of roms based on 4.4., Cyanogenmod 11 nightlies would be ideal. but I dont think they run with safestrap.
So maybe to clarify what I can do from here, is there a current list of roms that are compatible with safestrap?

Your version of Safestrap is compatible with TW 4.2 Roms. The newest version, for MJ7 and MK2 builds, is compatible with TW 4.3 (Hyperdrive only at this point).
You can't revert to an older build and you can only flash Touchwhiz Roms with Safestrap.
You have more reading to do. All of this information has been posted multiple times.

So only roms with a ME7 kernal?, I guess it's back to the ole GPE rom for me -_-
Well that's ****ty. Verizon has no mercy.
Is there an option for me to upgrade to MJ7 via odin and upgrade my version of safestrap? Or is this out of the question?

Flashing roms on mj7/mdk safestrap

Is the only way right now to flash a rom is to delete all data in stock slot on ss then flash a compatible rom? I dont want to have to lose my data to do this.

Officially there is no way to flash a custom ROM on MJ7. Unofficially i have heard of some people doing this, but i HIGHLY DONT RECOMMEND IT! This is because if you screw something up there is a high chance of bricking. For now i would advise you to wait until Hashcode has ported safestrap over to MJ7.

Well it's just that Safestrap for 4.3 is in beta right now. It is risky and unless you don't care if you brick the phone or are really experienced I would wait it out.

I agree...unless you don't need your phone or like to reflash and do Odin...its beta and hashcode does his development step by step. Loading Roms and having issues with a beta release won't speed the process. Pay attention to what hashcode wants...I'm just saying
powered by hashcode safestrap hyperdrive 10.2
MJ7
Safestrap 3.71 is working with safestrap and RLS 11& RLS12 is working flawlessly. I have it in slot 2 on my S4. I highly reccommend flashing only stock kernel with installer then installing MJ7 patch before initial boot then changing kernel if need be.
Let me know if this helps!
Mj7 build can be found at this link!!

I just got done about 2 days ago with moving to mj7 via the non wipe Odin file, then OTA'd to mk2, rooted with the safe root process, installed safe strap 3.71, installed HD12 and moved it to the stock side.
I gotta say I'm definitely impressed with HD12 and how smooth it is.

I'm currently running Safestrap v3.71 with latest Hyperdrive ROM. So far it has been running smooth error free
Safestrap galaxy s3 4.3 verizon ml1?
Just wondering if safestrap will work on my galaxy s3. I am on 4.3 build ml1 with saferoot and have locked bootloader.

Any other NON-TW ROMs available for ME7 SS other than Eclipse GE and GPE

2 questions. I've been searching but can't seem to get a clear answer. From what I understand only TW based ROMs work with ME7 Safe Strapped S4. But there are two ROMs that AFAIK are non-TW based. Those are Eclipse GE and the GPE.
First question is, are there any other non-TW ROMs that work?
2nd question is, how do those two ROMs work if they aren't TW based? What would it take for say LiquidSmooth 2.37 to work with an ME7 Safe Strapped S4?
Thank you.
Eclipse is tw based on me7 build...considered "stock" for safestrap...no asop or cm Roms/kernels work in safestrap
powered by hashcode safestrap hyperdrive 10.2

Specifically this ROM. It's based on the Google Edition of the phone. It is not running TouchWiz at all.
Try whatever you want on a ROM slot, if you do it under a ROM slot you don't have to worry about bricking, that's the "safe" part of safestrap. Running a true AOSP ROM such as LiquidSmooth would require kexec support for safestrap, which at this point probably isn't going to happen.

I believe Google edition ROMS are all TW based if I remember correctly. Or they use the TW kernels, which is why they should work with safestrap
edit: after doing some research you can only flash TW based ROMS that have same base firmware you have. Since you are ME7 you can only flash ME7 based TW ROMS. Hope this helps

So then, since Hash just released an Alpha of SafeStrap for MJ7, does that mean I will be able to use this rom if I were to update to MJ7?
The OP said that the older Eclipse GE ROM running on 4.2/ME7 worked, so does that mean this will work? I hope so. TouchWiz isn't the worst overlay to Android, but truth be told I'm getting tired of it. Locked bootloaders really suck.
I'm on ME7 Running HyperDrive through SS at the moment.
No you can't, put it to you this way; any rom that uses the stock tw kernel you can use with safestrap.

Depends, is phone a MK2 build or MDK? Many people get baseband and build number mixed up. They are not the same thing
If its MK2 build you can't load a recovery like TWRP or CWM as the bootloader, since MDK is fully lock down. You only option is safestrap and a handful of safestrap compatible ROMS.
plenty of info here that you need to know. Plenty of threads to digest
Mine is MK2 Build. It's already rooted with safestrap. So will any Safestrap ROM work? As long as I flash the MK2 add on?

Yes... And like he said there really are only a handful of safestrap ROMs... I'd suggest trying out hyper drive first and see how you like it.

thats correct. If a ROM is safestrap compatible and you flash the kernel module associated with your build.
Please note, that hyperdrive has a SPECIFIC safestrap ROM, don't download the other one. I have tried everyone to date and still go back to HD12

If you like the look of inverted, vanilla AOSP, look into Eclipse ROM. The developer, well known here, is nitroglycerine33. He is currently working on a Safestrap version of his Eclipse ROM so people like us with locked bootloaders can use his ROM. It has that beautiful AOSP look, and has really excellent battery life.
Cheers

S4 firmware question

Hey guys, I'm having trouble getting my brother's GS4 to work with his Ford Sync system in his vehicle. According to Ford, the GS4 with ME7 firmware is compatible. However, his rooted phone is on MDK firmware. Can I install that firmware on his phone and will it limit what rom's I can run on it?

If that phone is on MDK it can run anything really without an issue. A ton of options are available for it. I'd suggest a Kit Kat ROM myself... Unless your in love with a certain ME7 based ROM .
Does that phone have a custom recovery on it?

Yep, TWRP 2.7.0.1 recovery. It currently is running the AOSP Google Edition ROM, which he is happy with. Can I just change the firmware to ME7 and keep everything else the same?
Thanks!!
BTW, that rom is a kitkat 4.4.2 based ROM.
Also, I forgot to ask......If I change the firmware, can I change back if need be? Any downsides to changing from the MDK firmware?

I'm thinking that maybe Ford Sync works with everything from ME7 and up. I don't think you need to specifically be on ME7.
I've seen others on here running Kit Kat ROMs and having no problems with Ford Sync.
Your list of ME7 based ROMs isn't going to be that big. However you have many many options of 4.3 ( MJ7 & MK2 ) and 4.4 ( NC5 ) ROMs to choose from.
What ROMs have you tried? Some have minor Bluetooth connectivity issues

If you flash a firmware. ..you will lose the mdk. ..so don't do that...you can flash others roms and kernels that won't effect the firmware.

Thanks a bunch guys! That's what I was afraid of, regarding the firmware. Hmm......he was running a different rom before when he had all the issues. We just went to this rom recently and he went back to his GS3 until I could sort this phone out. I'll have him try the GS4 again with this rom and see if it works any better. Thanks again!!

My GS4 has worked with Sync when running ME7, MI1, MJ7, MK2, and NC5. Never had any issues since I got the phone.
(Sure wish it had been a MDK phone, of course.)

[Q] Installing a Custom Rom??

Hello there, xda! I've been having quite a few issues installing Cyanogenmod (and many other custom ROMs) onto my Gs4 and was wondering if someone might be able to walk me through the steps of installing the custom ROM on my specific device. I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 from Verizon with Android 4.4.2 and NC5 as my baseband.

If you don't have the MDK bootloader with the Loki hack, you cannot run CM and other AOSP based roms. There is a ROM however that's safe strap compatible
