So right now I'm running Task650s AOKP with Siyah Kernel, but an old version, thats still Android 4.0.4. In addition, I only have CWM 5. A lot of the KK ROM threads say that CWM 6 is required (and some JB ones imply the same thing, or tha I need JB bootloaders), but the one I want to flash (PACMan) doesn't have such a warning, but I'm still a bit apprehensive. Will I be fine if I just wipe, flash PACMan + GApps and reboot? Or is there an intermediary step I need like flashing a new kernel, and if so which one do I need?

Well pacman isn't based on kitkat so I think you're good to go, the newest nightlies for that are still based on jellybean right? Or has it changed? I haven't downloaded one in a like two weeks.

Yes, you will be fine, as long as you install a JB kernel first (either STI or AJK 4.9 AOSP). I would suggest you install Milestone 1 (the download link is labeled PAC Release), instead of the nightly. Nightlies have a reputation for being finicky at times, so if you want stability you'd be better off sticking with known stable releases.
And don't forget to flash the gapps either, or you'll run into other problems.

A long time ago I rooted my phone via odin and then flashed a shostock ics rom to my sgh i777, after searching around on this forum I found out not to go on the website that I learned how to originally root/flash my phone, anyway here is my phones current information

Now im planning on switching over to the Siyah 4.3.3 kernel with micswap, and the AOKP Jellybean Build 11.9.2012 rom. Now from what I've gathered I simply both the kernel zip and rom zip over onto my phone. Using cwm I flash the kernel because odin only recognizes .tars iirc and then have it boot back into cwm and then flash the rom? Obvioulsy before i go through with it, i'll make the nandroid, and then do
1. Wipe cache
2. Wipe dalvik
3. If you are already on a previous version of Siyah, "Reset ExTweaks profiles" (its under "Kernel specific options")
4. Flash the kernel
Once i flash the kernel I should be able to flash over to the JB rom correct?

1) Copy ROM, Kernel and JellyBean GApps to your device in a place that's easy to find (I use root of internal SD)
2) Reboot into recovery
3) Make a nandroid backup
4) wipe data/factory reset
5) wipe cache
6) wipe dalvik cache
7) reset extweaks profiles
8) install ROM zip from internal
9) install JB GApps
10) install Siyah 4.3.3 micswap if you want - but you won't get support in the AOKP thread if you do this.
11) reboot device
If you flash a kernel before a ROM, the kernel included in the ROM will overwrite the one you just flashed.

I was under the impression I need the micswap in order to use the rom I want? You mentioned I can use it if I want but I just wont get support in the thread so I tried researching the whole micswap thing, well Im still a little confused because some say you need it for the i9100 phones. Well mine is an sgh i777.. but after I originally flashed it with odin whenever I booted it, it comes up with the i9100 logo, so Im a little confused now because in the siyah thread it says I need the micswap to run the rom I want (AOKP Jellybean 11.9.2012).
I downloaded the v4.3.3 - CM10/AOKP MALI - CWM Flashable kernel with the micswap. Either way cant I just put the other 2 v4.3.3 ICS Micswap and no miccswap kernels onto my internal SD and then flash them if I have to?

Reading is your friend here - spend LOTS of time doing this BEFORE flashing to know what you are getting into. But the short answer to your questions above:
There are mic-swap and non-mic-swap versions of most of the kernels for the i777. if you are using a rom based on an i777 samsung release, you need NON-mic swap. If you are using a ROM based on i9100 Samsung release, or AOKP, or CM, or AOSP, or pretty much anything else, you need mic-swap. Any ROM you install will include a kernel with the appropriate swap settings. You are best off running whatever kernel comes with the ROM you flash at least at first, and then try something else if you want additional functionality or want to see if you can improve performance. If you flash some other kernel over a ROM, the ROM dev will likely not provide any support becuase you are messing with what they release - this sometimes results in bugs/erratic behavior. It's up to you at this point to research/read/try stuff to sort out your problems.
The latest siyah ported and modded by Ktoonsez is 4.3.3. Ktoonsez adds some stuff to 'stock' siyah, so many people use that. 5.0.1 Siyah was ported by AJ, with, as far as I know, only minimal changes. it is more of a 'stock' siyah, but a newer version. You need to research the two yourself to decide which is better for you based on their features. you do this by reading at LEAST the first 10 posts and last 200 posts (yes, last 20 pages) to get an idea of the history and ongoing issues for each. You should be doing that for any ROM you are thinking of flashing too. If you're not willing to spend at least that much time to benefit yourself, it's not fair to expect anyone here to spend their time helping you.
If you have an i9100 logo at boot, it means you flashed non-stock via odin and triggered the counter. This won't hurt you at all unless you need to return the device for warranty issues, or if it annoys you. There are plenty of threads around here with the means to get rid of it - search is your friend here.

Thanks for the quick response and yeah im not too worried about about the counter. I appreciate you clearing up that each rom has its own kernel for some reason I thought you need to match a kernel/rom. For now i'll just try the aokp rom and then maybe switch over to the siyah 4.3.3 after doing more research. I just went through with flashing just the rom and gapps now time to spend an hour in the bathroom figuring everything out. Anyway thanks for the help i'll definitely do more research into android. Computers were my hobby for the longest period of time untill I got into cars, trying to pick up phones now even though im pretty late to the party.

I would like to install a rom on my recently purchased galaxy facinate. I need to use the bluetooth and gps a lot, so I need a rom that has both of those working very well. What is the best stable rom to use for this? I have installed roms on previous phones and have had troubles with various functions, but I'm certain someone out there must know a good and stable one that noob like me could use.

It looks like you pulled that from droidstyle's guide, which is exactly where you needed to go and everything is accurate.
About the THS flash... well, different people here seem to have different experiences. On my device I don't flash THS before installing anything, I go directly from flashing CWM4 to flashing whatever I want to and have no issues, but there have been people on here who get errors that way. If it makes you feel better to flash THS before CM 10.1 then go for it, it won't hurt anything, it'll just take longer.
This whole process is not something you should have to do again unless you really mess something up, once you're on CM 10.1 you only need to reboot into recovery, wipe data/davlik/cache and flash whatever other rom you want to. There are a lot of good roms available that you might want to check out, in fact one of the more popular roms Paranoid Android just came out with a new version that looks pretty good.
This phone is hard to break, just don't get careless and you'll be fine honestly.

Yes, you do flash gapps after installing cm10. You do it immediately after flashing the ROM in recovery, no need to reboot first (better not to, in fact).
Process-wise, I've never reached for Heimdall, always used Odin, but the cm wiki article looks like a more tedious process to me...
Once you've got the USB drivers + Odin installed, and the various flashable files handy, we're only talking a few steps to go from stock to cm10.1.
Do note that after you've got JT's clockwork recovery installed, the cm instructions say to flash your cm ROM directly without flashing the older THS ROM first .

I tried the latest 4.22 versions of Hellybean and JellyBro. about the only thing I noticed was that the overclock setting on Hellybean had a top range of 1.4 GHZ and JellyBro topped out at 1.2.

My phone just gets stuck in a black screen when I try to boot into recovery. It happend once a few days ago, and i soloved it by going again to stock by odin and rooting it again. It booted to recovery the first time, i flashed carbon rom nightly 26 and now when I try to update, it doenst boot again. What is happening?

Firstly: Please give more detailed information (which kernel do you use, which ROM did you use before the problem occurred?)
Secondly: It is possible that you can't acess recovery mode anymore when flashing new updates. Happens with CM 10.2 OTA Update right now. The solution would be to flash a new recovery using Heimdall (Open-Source ODIN alternative) [Didn't try that, but should theoretically work] or, mor simple, a new kernel. Dorimany v9.34 is suited perfectly for that. Download here: http://dorimanx.shine.sk/ .

Well, i used Carbon Rom for a few weeks, so that was definitly the rom. Talking about the kernel, I dont even know how to install one.. haha Now in kernel version it says..

You installed a Kernel while rooting your phone: Its the .tar that you have to put into the PDA section in ODIN. There are Kernels with .tar and .zip: .tar files are only flashable using Odin while .zip files are flashed using the recovery just like you flash ROMs. I guess your Kernel is a custom CM Kernel (CM for Cyanogen Mod). Carbon ROM is probably based on CM. There is currently no other workaround to get your recovery back then flashing a new kernel/recovery. I am currently working on an easy workaround for this problem, but it will take a while.
Dorimanx is downloadable here http://dorimanx.shine.sk/ and should be compatible: Just flash it like you did when rooting your phone in the beginning, just with Dorimanx .tar in PDA. Recovery should work again afterwards.

I did what you said and after installing Carbon Rom again recovery is gone.. so I suposse it is Carbon problem. I will do it again and install a different rom

I agree, the problem results of the ROM: But you have to flash dorimanx after carbon because carbon replaces the current kernel with its own CM custom Kernel. It should work just fine with carbon when it's flashed after installing carbon.

There's ROM's for 4.3 but I don't see any kernels posted here. Can someone point me in the right direction? Apparently the sg2 has left the limelight for a while now.
Once I get the kernel updated, does anyone have any good ROMs to recommend?

Which rom is a personal matter. You should try them yourself to see what you like. If you want Samsung Touchwiz based firmware, the latest version will be 4.1.2. To get 4.2.2 or 4.3, you will have to go with one of the AOSP based roms.
Since you have a custom kernel with CWM Recovery, just pick the firmware you want to try and flash it in recovery. You don't need to install another kernel first.

firmware update? no. Whether 4.0.4 or 2.3.whatever, you already have have root/cwm; all that's left is a some recommended housecleaning*, then flash whatever ROM you want.
*either:
rom-cleaning-script
or:
factory reset

In my experience with custom ROMs, I found that ShoStock3 v4.0 and UCMD8 v2.2 COOKED give the best battery life and stability, but I use the stock kernel for ShoStock and AJK v4.9 for UCMD8 COOKED. CM/PA/AOKP have given me subpar results in terms of stability and, most importantly (for me anyway), battery life. This is not to say that those other ROMs are bad, but for me, those haven't been working out. Your mileage may vary. Just my $0.02.

So you're looking for a rom. The rom you use will all depend on the type of software you like. If you like touchwiz, I recommend Shostock 3 4.0 or the Cooked Rom. If you're looking for a AOKP Android 4.2.2 rom, then I would use the Resurrection Remix rom, but remember, all roms differ on every phone. Not everyone gets the same results. I wouldn't use a 4.3 rom because its fairly new and pretty unstable on some phones, but if you really want to, I got the best results on the Carbon rom, but the battery life wasn't so good. Also, a lot of the 4.2 and 4.3 roms require you to flash gapps, which are the google apps for you phone. If you're looking for kernels, the usually come with the rom you download, so you don't really need to get a kernel. If you really want the extra customization and tweaks, there are some kernels out there, including AJK, Jeboo, and STI, that you can flash. I personally use AJK on a lot of my roms because I found it to be the most sucessful. I am running Shostock 3 with jeboo kernal right now. Shostock 3 has good performance, stability, and battery life and is touchwiz. So yeah, keep all this in mind when flashing a kernal. You don't to connect your phone to the computer or anything to flash a kernel. If you're rooted, you just have to have the rom in your phone storage or SD card and go into clockworkmod recovery and flash. Hope this helps and good luck on finding a rom that's right for you!
So I've tried a bunch of different ROMs (CleanROM, Alliance, Beans, CM, OMNI, "Stock", probably more), but I've never really understood kernels. It seems some custom ROMs have a kernel built in (or several to choose from via Aroma), while others do not. Right now I'm running AOKP (4.4.2) with the kernel from OMNI (3.0.64-OMNI-g5f47648), presumably because that was the previous ROM I flashed with a kernel. I'm not too concerned with customization, more with stability.
I've been having a few minor bugs and crashes and I'd like to try perhaps the stock kernel to see if that might help, but I have some questions:
1) Does it matter when flashing a kernel whether the ROM is TW or AOSP?
2) Are there multiple versions of kernels that correspond with the Android version of the ROM?
3) What's the best/easiest way to flash a kernel, presumably through the custom recovery like a ROM?
4) Where can I find the stock kernel? I found this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2610870) with the stock MJ9 kernel, but going back to my first two questions I'm not sure if it would work with my current ROM.

Yes. TW and AOSP kernels are different.. The only one, that I believe, that can be used with both is Devil kernel for Dual Booting
2) Are there multiple versions of kernels that correspond with the Android version of the ROM?
Yes. Usually every version of android that gets updated.. the kernel does as well

Yes you can flash kernels through a custom recovery. Most of the time they are included with the Rom that you flash. A lot of the custom ones out have flashable zip for you to flash them through a recovery.

No this will NOT work with a AOSP rom.. The kernel will be specific to that ROM and every other TW 4.3 ROM, but NOT AOSP

Thanks for the explanations, that helps tremendously. I'm confused now, however, because several people on the AOKP thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2453566) claim to be on "stock kernel". Is there a stock kernel for AOSP that I'm missing?

Well that's what I thought, but why then would I be using an OMNI kernel (3.0.64-OMNI-g5f47648) when I have flashed the last three AOKP nightly ROMs that have come out? Or am I missing something here?

Maybe he uses that kernel.. AOSP kernels, I believe are pretty similar.. I may be wrong, I am by NO MEANS a kernel guru..I would open you zip of your ROM (AOKP) and take a peak.. if there is a boot.img than it flashes a kernel.. and if your says OMNI then thats the kernel the dev has used..

Should be able to if you back it up previously.. but make sure it is same rom.. TouchWiz for TouchWiz.. AOSP for AOSP

I have a noob question, I'm currently using n3bula 3.9 custom rom and it's been running fine for a while. I noticed that users chose the agni kernel whereas I chose the stock one. So my question is, is it possible to flash just the kernel from recovery without losing my data? I've spent so much time and effort customizing my phone, therefore, I just want to change the kernel. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

I would think that as long as it doesn't break anything you should be fine. Probably do a backup first if you're worried about it.
Thanks for the response Michael, however, that was the response I was dreading! I'm actually worried I'll lose my WhatsApp and Viber accounts because even if I backed up my data, I'd still have to register my old WhatsApp and Viber numbers all over again which I don't have anymore.. ??
