[Q] Verizon sch i605 new carrier? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

I have a Verizon sch i605 (galaxy note 2). I really want to get off Verizon. I need to know if there is any other service that I can flash my phone to that will allow me to be free of this garbage service.
Now I know I can get it over to pageplus, but my issue here is 4g speeds. I want 4g! is that so hard?? anyways... I called straight talk, and searched everywhere about them and apparently Verizon 4g phones cant be flashed to them. So does anyone know a service that has a decent coverage map and 4g speeds (unlimited preferred) that I can get my note 2 over to? I can't seem to find anything online that helps at all...

If you want the best 4g coverage you're already on it

Sell your Note 2, buy new Note 2 on this better carrier you think exists.

Sim unlocked
I hear that the sim in the Verizon Note 2 is already unlocked. just go to Wal-Mart and grab a straight talk sim and see what you think. I think there is a mod for rooted phones to get rid of the annoying sim notification. I have been researching a cheaper alternative to Verizon but the unlimited pre paid plans aren't exactly unlimited. once you hit the 2gb allowance a month they will throttle your speed back and could even disconnect your services. its all in there EULA.

You don't have to flash the Note 2 for other service. You just get another sim and pop it in. I am currently testing out Straight Talk on my Note 2. Basically, after you activate your service with them, you just need to add the APN info on your phone and connect to that network. This modified APK from IMNUTS will let you not have the annoying sim notification.

However, the last statement above is the downside. Once you hit 2.5gb of usage, your speeds are throttled down. Now, it says high speed, so I am not sure if they are only talking about LTE or what, because our phones cannot connect to LTE because we do not have the needed phone bands.

So you are saying the verizon sch i605 will work with this method? I called straight talk and they said it was impossible. I am not sure why they would say that if it is as easy as you say.

The phone is sim unlocked. That means you can pop in any carrier's sim card and phone calls will work with no flashing or any modifications needed. What Verizon did is block the APN settings... Without adjusting those, you will not get data at all on another carrier.
Customized ROMs and apk and flash able zip exploits all exist to get around this.

Because a lot of the times they don't know what they are talking about? Here is their own website where you can put in your phone IMEI and it will tell you it is compatible.
http://stbyop.com/straighttalk/
Also, the 4.1.2 update from Verizon allowed the user to edit APN's without needing root.

Let us now how the straight talk 4g is in your area. I have been debating on switching with my note 2 but I am grandfathered in on unlimited Verizon data and am not a big fan of the 2gb-ish cap on the "unlimited" data prepaid plans offer.

So confused
I feel like such a noob. I am checking into getting a new sim card for my phone. But all the ones that are being sold are for "att" "net10" "tmobile"... they are straight talk sims... just being sold as specifically for each of those carrier's phones. Is there a difference? I know that I can't use a micro sim because it wont fit. But they have a "mini" sim that is the regular size but the actual chip part is small. So needless to say, I don't know if that one will work!
Basically I am thinking about getting the straight talk sim that is supposed to be for att phones because it looks the most similar. But please I would like someone to give ,me a little insight before I go ahead and buy it.
They are also selling T-Mobile sim chips for "swap trick" I don't really know if that's what I need either... I am so confused lol. This is one topic that I can't seem to research properly online. I got all the APN crap done, but the sim baffles me. It should be that I can just use any sim and it should work...
Second part...
Can I use a used straight talk sim? and if I can... Will I have to use the number that sim was activated on?

I went with the AT&T sim because of their network footprint. And contrary to your above point, you do want the micro sim, as that is the slot our phones have.
I am not sure about the answer to your second question. I mean, the sim cards are practically free, so not sure why you wouldn't want to purchase a new one.

While the HSPA+ has excellent coverage, the speed is not up to par with LTE. That said, I still get comparable download speeds to my VZW LTE speeds and I am guessing that has to do with network congestion here. If I go to my home town, which is not a tenth of the size of Houston, LTE is blazing fast and there is a large gap between it and the HSPA+.
TL;DR - For the price, the speed is satisfactory.

Ok, so I think I understand. You got the actual ATT sim card? Like the SIM card you would get if you actually went to ATT?
I want the ATT coverage as well since TMOBILE sucks here. As far as the micro sim card goes. I am not sure we are talking about the same thing. The micro card is way smaller than the normal sim card. It is like half the size. So while you say that's what we have in our phone, I can assure you the one in mine is much bigger. The ATT one looks to be the same size as mine. But like I said, they have a regular size card with a small chip as well. I just don't think the tiny card will fit in there.

No, I am using the AT&T sim card directly from the Straight Talk website.
And our phone uses a microSim card, that is simply a fact. If you have something else, I don't know how that is possible. There is no way a regular size sim is going to fit in that spot. Here is the inside:

We were talking about two different things. I figured it out. I did want a micro sim, but the one I was talking about was WAY smaller. It's on ebay. Not sure what it is, but it's there. I just got a micro sim from ST website, much easier. Thanks for the help.

I have aio wireless which is mnvo off of att and I get lte everywhere and the bill is 70 bucks with unlimited talk and text plus 7 gigs of data with the option to buy more for 10 bucks per gig

My phone will not connect to the internet, if I put the SIM card into my AT&T Samsung Captivate it works just fine.
Are there settings I am supposed to change?
First thing ... is this a LTE Sim Card?
It should be orange and blue with a globe on it, no wording no white...

They asked me what kind of SIM I had and I told them I had a 3G SIM so he told me he would have to give me a new SIM for the LTE and he did. The SIM is orage with a globe on it, and the top half is white with a long number on it.
He did call and I physically heard him give her my phones IMEI number however something could have gotten ****ed up because they made me buy a 2nd SIM for my other line because I was "cross upgrading" by upgrading MY phone by using an upgrade that was on another line. However, he sounded like he knew his stuff and since I heard him give her the IMEI number I cant imagine how things got twisted up.
And yes it would be nice to be able to login to ATT or call tech support to check but there isnt a damn thing I can do when the website is down and its after tech support hours.

You may be right, but what i dont understand is the dude asked me if it was a 3G SIM and when I said it was he busted out a brand new one for me. My old one has 3G right on the front, the new one does not resemble it.
Also when I did a google image search I found a lot of LTE SIM cards that look exactly like the one I have. However I did see a couple that were all a solid orange like the one you described but there was info to suggest my card was the incorrect one.

Your Inspire SIM is 4G, right? Could you ask them for an LTE SIM for the Inspire and then see if it works with the Note. (I assume it will.) GoPhone doesn't have any LTE SIM option right now, correct? Thanks.
Somewhat different, but I have an H20 prepaid SIM I use in my AT&T Note while travelling. No data is available, but voice calls and SMS work just fine.

Has anyone tried to create a non lte apn and get data working with a non lte sim. I have an lte sim but had created a non lte apn and was using that since there is no lte in Omaha yet.

First off, welcome to XDA.
Yes. You can use a go phone SIM card with the AT&T Note. But I can't personally recommend it.
Just tell a rep that you need a new SIM card (full sized) and they'll give you one. With a go phone account, you may need to bring your LG phone into the store if your name isn't on the account.
As for getting the phone to work properly. There are a few tricks. One that I haven't personally tried is wiping the EFS folder to give the phone a "generic IMEI".
There are a lot of great tutorials for getting most Androids to work with go phone service on XDA. Just keep in mind your data speeds will not be good. (I believe you will be throttled to 1mb dl)
Of course, if you can! I have it so! and I works great but it must be with a new sim card and prepaid active. You can also change the vpn! I did and it works fine!

I too am rocking my note on a Nokia E71 StraightTalk SIM. (I did this before they started selling the SIM's by themselves). Works like a charm and I have H+ data just like I did on my Infuse.

Need help which straight talk sim should I get for my rezound

Which straight talk sim card can I use for the rezound?
can anyone help with this problem can't find answer on the internet anywhere?
Rezound sim card
I am assuming that you want to use it on ATT or T-mobile GSM network? Regardless, it will take either full size or micro. Verizon is the subsiding carrier, and they typically seem to sell it with the micro sim card (and it is what I have in mine) so I'm sure it will work. It should work with either though.
your rezound has the micro sim card?
never seen one that did...
not trying to bust your chops but my sim is easily 3 times the size of my sd card... the micro sim card thats in the razr is roughly the same size as my sd
Is it a Verizon 4g sim or gsm? No offense taken. Just trying to help out as I have been helped on here.
But the resound is able to use either size. I'll post a pic shortly.
Edit: posted pics. I had the same question when I got the phone, but they said it would work with either size. Surprisingly, I haven't had any issue with the micro. No unseating or anything.
any idea if one is better than the other?
i've never heard that rezounds could use the micros...
very interesting, sorry to have been incorrect above
i've seen about 7 or 8 rezounds, and they all have the bigger card, and we all suffer a weak 4g compared to other phones around here...
i wonder if i should try the micro sim, isnt it like a v2, or the next generation of 4g sims??
i think i'll start another thread to see if theres an advantage, but i'm gonna google around looking for more info on its ability to use both, i'm still in awe lol
Well, I have only had the micro, but I can tell you that this thing picks up 4g in usually 1-3 seconds after I turn on mobile network and it doesn't drop unless I tell it to (or if I am in the basement of a large 3 story concrete building at work). It maybe the ics firmware though. I know others have had problems with it, but it has improved my rezound in every way. The only reason I would even think about going back is to be able to use a GB kernel that could undervolt, but the hit I'd take on the web browsing speed just wouldn't be livable not that I have gotten used to the ice cream...

Why is it our responsibility if you ****ed up? The Rezound will work on GSM bands, but as of right now, it does not work fully. You should be able to make and receive calls, may or may not have data, and SMS does not work.

I'm just saying people shouldn't say something will work when they don't know what they're talking about.

If you did some reading on these forums you'd know that there's a problem with GSM networks. Because a SIM fits into a slot doesn't mean it'll work...
As for flashing to Straight Talk, you shouldn't need to if you have a SIM. What the hell is Straight Talk anyway?

So do I have any options like can I flash something to get it to work? I see people advertising flashing it to straight talk and it requires a sim card that has been used on verizon which I have any help would be very much appreciated I currently have no phone.

Did you ever get this figured out. I know the t-mobile prepaid card works for me. I'm using Rezrom. I can't remember if it worked for stock or not. I'm thinking about getting a straight talk sim card just to play around with.
Around here straight talk uses Verizon towers. Anyone know how to flash this phone to straight talk? Or would it be ad simple as putting one of their sim cards in?

That's not how straight talk works. If you have Att in your area, straight talk will work. T-mobile and Att are the only networks that will work with the bring your own device plans. You have to get a specific phone to use the Verizon towers.
Straight talk does not have software for any phone other than the optimus they have on android. The tower type is based on the phone's letter. The 900g is att and the t is Verizon?
Edit: Cannot use a non-straight talk phone on straight talk. Even on gsm bands.

You can use non straight talk phones on straight talk just not for Verizon. The rezound will probably work with the att straight talk sim. You might get data but not positive. T-Mobile straight talk sim will work as well but only for voice.

[Q] DNA to Straight Talk T-Mobile vs AT&T

I currently have a Droid DNA through Verizon and would like to switch to Straight Talk. I see options for both AT&T and T-Mobile compatible SIM cards, and am curious which one I should go with. I live in the Houston area. I prefer not to have to cut the card but it's not a deal breaker.
In my area AT&T has much wider and more reliable data coverage. I was often on edge everywhere in my hometown while on T-Mobile. This may not be the case for Houston. Just test drive both networks for a month each.
Ah, excellent point. Should be cheap enough to try them both. Thanks!
I actually work in Electronics at Walmart and deal with this all the time. Straight Talk will not move 4G LTE phones to their service. They aren't compatible and do not have the agreements with carriers for LTE access. If you read the CDMA/GSM bring your own phone package that includes the SIM cards it says in bold writing LTE Phones are not compatible. The DNA would not be able to be used on Straight Talk because it is a LTE phone. Straight Talk has a list of approved devices on their website. Because you do have to provide your phones IMEI they will know it is a LTE phone and deny your request to activate the phone on their services.
Kutster, I hate to correct you but I actually did successfully connect my Droid DNA using the Walmart SIM card. Now in my area it was actually called FamilyMobile, and run by T-Mobile. I purchased a SIM card from Walmart, took it home, plugged it in, set up an account, and it worked. Granted, you don't get LTE, but it does work and is mega cheap ($40/mo unlimited). I ended up cancelling and taking it back, simply because the internet was very slow, and the coverage wasn't very good in my area (T-Mobile sucks in my area). I do want to stress though that it definitely does work! I think I'll try AT&T GoPhone next.
The important thing to remember is this phone (the DNA) has all the radios necessary to connect to just about anybody but Sprint's network. Don't always believe what the companies tell ya.

See that's where your terms and confusion of prepaid comes into play. Of course Family Mobile worked they don't have restrictions on LTE especially since Family Mobile is powered by T-mobile. Straight Talk which is the company I was referring to and the company you were referring to does has limitations on LTE phones, and will NOT allow any LTE phone to to brought to their service. This has to do with they license the use of multiple carriers towers.
Trust me I am not trying to be rude, but I honestly deal with this on a daily basis. You know how many Straight Talk bring your own phone kits I have had to refund because customers buy them for their nice Verizon LTE smartphones? It doesn't work. I am telling you from my experience and my countless hours on the phone with Straight Talk reps and on their website, what their policy is on LTE phones. I beg you to go to Walmart and look at the Straight Talk CDMA/GSM BYOP (Bring Your Own Phone) kits that they sell for $60. In the middle of that package on the front it says something along the lines of "LTE Phones are not Compatible." Which like it reads means you cannot bring over a LTE phone to Straight Talk.
AT&T prepaid I would venture to guess would work, but I can't remember if AT&T is as picky as Verizon is about what smartphones get put on their prepaid plans. You would have to call and find out.
So once again, please keep in mind that every prepaid carrier is different, use different towers, and different policies. Just because it worked on one does not mean a different company has policies that differ or block that same practice.
I didn't realize StraightTalk and FamilyMobile were different. I just assumed that when I went to Walmart it was whatever they were using. I see now that StraightTalk is AT&T and FamilyMobile is T-Mobile. I only had the option for FamilyMobile at my Walmart. Thanks for the clarification.
I'm not going to disagree, but I will say that the FamilyMobile website also said my specific phone was not eligible, but it did in fact work. So to anyone else reading this, YMMV. Considering Walmart takes the card back for a full refund, I don't see a problem in at least attempting it (except that employees such as yourself have to deal with it ). It makes sense to me that there's no way for the carrier to enforce specific phones when they are SIM card based. So long as your phone has the radios that carrier operates on, it should work. My guess is that the LTE phones statement on the package is in reference to the fact that you won't get LTE speeds with that network.

Being an an LTE device wouldn't matter in this case since the LTE radio will only work on the CDMA side of the phone and with Verizon's LTE. It has UMTS and Straight Talk already confirmed with me the phone would get 3G while on their network. There's not a magic way of them detecting an LTE phone ( one that works on a CDMA carrier mind you) and flipping the off switch. The 2G and 3G networks are available for AT&T and T-Mobile regardless of which prepaid carrier you use.

Im not going to argue about it. When you go to activate a BYOP on Straight Talk you have to input the IMEI, which does tell Straight Talk if the phone is LTE capable or not and if it isn't eligible it will not allow you to activate the phone. Period. I hate done it and tried it. It isn't like ATT where you put in the SIM card and it is activated. You activate the phone IMEI and SIM card # with Straight Talk. That is how it works with BYOP.
@Impala Im glad you had luck getting Family Mobile working.

Yeah I just read up on that. I wonder if the DNA 700mhz band will work. I checked online and it shows AT&T as using the 700 bands as well (a,b,c) I'm assuming the new Sim they are selling enables the LTE?
Can anyone with the new Sim confirm LTE connectivity?
EDIT : looks like at&t is band 17 and Verizon is 13. The FCC is pushing for interoperability within the upper 700 but it looks as if the chipset controls which band LTE operates off of...damn. It would be sweet to get LTE on an unlimited prepaid plan.
Interesting. I wonder if GoPhone or anyone else that's AT&T related would work LTE wise?
So are you guys able to use gsm networks with the 2.06 firmware?

Me too. Straight Talk claims LTE works for unlocked AT&T smartphones.
Hey everyone, I'm totally new to Straight Talk and GSM and the DNA being used somewhere besides Verizon. (I'm a long time VZ customer but read Android Police daily and am familiar with all things Android.) Anyways, I'm pretty clear on using the phone on Straight Talk, getting MMS and all that, my only question is, how do you go about getting OTA's? Since the phone technically is a Verizon phone, updates would come from them. While on Straight Talk can I throw a Verizon sim card in the phone, download the OTA. Then after completing the update, put back in my AT&T sim card. Or does HTC offer OTA downloads online?
How do you guys go about updating your phone? (OTA's obviously apply to non-rooted devices. I may or may not root it.)
Thanks for your help!

From VZW to ST (Succesfully)

Well, it worked! I had crossed fingers and a chest full of dread as I began the move from Verizon to Straight Talk. Read many a post that said it could be done, some that said it couldn't, and a few nightmare posts about something going wrong. I did this with a rooted, but otherwise un-modded Galaxy S4. No added ROM's, kernels, or hacked or cracked anything. I'm not even sure you need to root it, but I was bored the other day and thought I would give it a shot.
I went to Straight Talk and ordered the SIM card kit for the BYOP program which was a $55 investment with the 30 day time card. I chose the AT&T Micro Sim Package which doesn't matter as the SIM I received was a normal sized SIM with a micro break away cut out as well.
I fired up the Registration/Activation page from Straight Talk, filled out all the info being sure to use the SIM card serial in place of the MEID/IMEI, and ported over my number from Verizon. Verizon has no PIN, you just need to provide them with your Verizon password for your account.
After that, I called ST which was a PITA, but I wanted to make sure everything went through fine. After hearing the verbal warning about how the SCH-I454 may or may not work with their service, and hearing how there is no refunds for the SIM card or the time card, I said go ahead and activate the SIM. He did so after reading me about three pages of BS and then telling me it could take up to 2 days for the number to be ported.
I continued to play with the phone with the VZW SIM in it until it went dead (about 30 minutes later), then switched out the SIM and began the conversion.

Global Mode vs. GSM Mode:
Make sure your phone is set to Global Mode or GSM Mode by going here:
settings/connections/more networks/mobile networks/network mode
Voicemail:
I noticed I had a Voicemail icon, but when I clicked on it, it routed me into the *63 loop of "Call can not be completed, blah blah".
This is due to Verizon using a different access for voicemail than ST. It is easily fixed.
Go to settings/my device/call/voicemail settings/voicemail numbers
and enter your cell number.
Now when you click on the VM icon or press and hold the 1 key, it will take you to your VM.
If you have a VM icon stuck on your screen, simply call your cell from a different number, leave a VM, then retrieve and delete it and it should disappear.
Verizon Bloatware Removal (sort of):
I figured since I wasn't on Verizon anymore, I could go ahead and get rid of the VZW bloatware all over this thing. There are ways to do it, that I found on these forums but I'm not very savvy when it comes to installing ROM's and such on phones so I chose to just play it safe and go to
settings/more/applications manager/all
and Turning Off everything that said or started with "Verizon".
Day 2: Continuation of Self Education
So I started receiving annoying pop up messages asking me to sign into my Verizon account. I could menu tab out of it, but it was mucho annoying. So I started digging deeper into this glorious website and the forums and learning about Safe Strap, ROM's, and flashing modules.
This led me down a bright path.
I ended up following the directions on this site in regards to installing Safe Strap v3.71 from Hashcode and the RootJunky (Tomsgt) Youtube installation video. Backing up the Stock ROM and then decided on the Hyperdrive RLS14 from sbreen94. Following the directions as outlined in the RootJunky (Tomsgt) YouTube videos, everything installed easily and I had zero issues.
Now in order to use Safe Strap, you will need root access, but finding that information on here is fairly easy. Easiest way is to search for the Tomsgt post where he links a lot of his videos. I believe it is even a sticky.
If like me, you are brand new to this whole thing and a little intimidated, it's okay. Just take your time, don't get in any hurry. Watch the installation videos prior to beginning your own installation, and just be careful. You are in good hands here.
Continued Discovery:
One of the side effects of switching over to ST from VZW was the addition of having the + sign added to calls in the call log. Now this didn't affect making calls or sending texts via your contact list, but if you tried to call back from the call log, the carrier assumed you were trying to make an international call and would drop it.
There is no way to fix it via the Calling options in settings but I did find a work around. An app by the name of Prefixer, put out by 253°Below (253below.com).
With this app, you can set rules to drop the + sign from outgoing and incoming calls. It's still going to show up in your call log, but when you tap a name or missed call to call them back, Prefixer automatically removes the added symbol and everything works like a peach!
Reclaiming Device Space:
Flashed HyperDrive RLS15 over the stock ROM this morning. Flashed the Modules before reboot and after install. Only issue I had was TouchWiz Home crashing on occasion, but a kindly soul on here told me it looked like it was an issue associated with restoring data. Although I didn't restore data, I also chose to just flash over the Stock ROM and use the installers Wipe/Factory Reset option instead of wiping the ROM slot first (Dumb move). All I had to do was boot into recovery with SafeStrap and Wipe the new ROM, reboot, and good to go. Now have close to 6Gigs of free space on the Flashed Stock ROM.

I haven't even tried. I may look into that a bit more and see what I can find. I tried a few different listed APN's, but to no avail.
Cool thanks. I would definitely appreciate it. My friend is looking at switching so I'm trying to help him out. I think I may have read somewhere that the 4g capability was dependent on the sim card number.
I'm told in my area that the Straight Talk service uses Verizon towers. Does that sound plausible? If so, I imagine the switch over would even be less of a hassle :fingers-crossed: $70 a month savings sure sounds tempting as my contract runs out this fall.

I believe they do, but it's all really dependent on phone model and area. You won't be able to use an S4 on a Verizon tower through ST. You would need to have ATT or TM service in that area to support the GSM for the Galaxy S4.
Verizon S4 will not work on ATT LTE, but will work on 3G. This is due to different LTE bands. As far as ST using Verizon, the older CDMA ST phones use verizon. ST is moving towards GSM hkwever.

When you order a SIM card from ST you have two options to choose from, the AT&T based version or the TM based version. Both are ST SIMS, they just run on different networks.

Strange, I haven't had any issues with MMS. What APN are you using?
Update: I actually had this happen to me the first time I renewed my monthly plan with ST. Just have to call and have them restart your plan to fix the issue. I used to work for Virgin Mobile and knew exactly what the issue was but it still took the ST guy about ten minutes before he grabbed a supervisor and they confirmed it.
This is assuming it worked in the past.

It would be phone dependent, if you are using a ST phone it would need to be one that has the letter "c" at the end of model number. I do not believe you can use VZW towers with a BYOP SIM, but I could be wrong.
