I'm just curious who these seasoned devs are in here. I'm trying to see where this is going cause right now I see two paths: a really useful resource or a super duper kangkit/get rich quick scheme.
Until then I'm off to cook some food, not a rom.

I'm envisioning a multipurpose/variety thread. The likes of which never before seen. A thread so historically consequential, that the once elusive trade magic, some only hinted of in the fables of yesteryear, will be exposed, explained and made the standard. Oh yes, I'm with you when you say, "sounds much too important for just one dev to endure singlehandedly!" Which is why I bring you, the thread which will overclock your kernels 'till they pop ............................................................TOP ROM N' COOKING WITH YOUR HOSTS, DUDE AND KING!!
My mom says hi
I'd really like to see this become an active source of information between developers. A place where even some of the best can learn a thing or two.
Anyway... stepping up:

Creator of the various VillainROMs on the HTC Hero, capable of more than file moving and winzip, luckily.
I'll help out in here as much as possible to help get things moving!
@Cyanogen; Great introductory thread
I'm no mod, but I do have some priveleges.
Let me introduce myself.
Most of you won't know me for my efforts on Winmo i guess, since this is Android Chef Central. I worked with the best guys on creating a driver(pack) for Windows based MSM7XXX devices.
Now, I'm helping out XDA as much as I can.
Pleased to meet.
I am jcarrz1, an activist in the community and a fairly basic rom modder, etc. that looks for unique roms/bases and ideas for my creations.
not anything special, mind you.

Hey man, your graphics driver packs were more than appreciated for my Diamond / Touch Pro / Touch HD ROMs! They made a difference.
BTW ... I'm dsixda, who got his life stolen away after starting on the Windows Mobile 6.x Onyx ROMs for the Elf/Elfin ;-)
Now that I'm on Android I really want to get back to doing actual development work. (I don't think writing Mortscripts for my ROMs count, do they?) However, the stock Android ROMs in my opinion are useful enough for my day-to-day activities... I'm just a file pushing guy for now ;-)
I am charansingh. Just learnt how to build cyanogen mod from source, Have been building overclocked kernels for personal use lately just for testing. Now digging into cyanogen mod source to see if i can see something interesting to learn, edit and make something new. Lately i edited setting in the camera to allow unlimited video record time kind of. And will be doing more as a get time to do it
Keep it clean guys!

Hey thanks man. I'm glad i've helped out people with my packs. I'm new to Android so i won't be much of a help in the graphics department, but I hope to help out as much as I can to get the best out of our snapdragon chipsets.

Due to repeated kanging from other Roms as well as needing CST paid version to obtain the latest version of the Rom, anything related to the CoreDroid team is not allowed to be posted anymore on XDA and is from now on considered warez.
This includes: Signatures, links, themes, as well as any work developed by the CD team or included in any Rom.

[Q] Can anyone post how to make Vibrant Themes?

I love the ROMs here but not always the fan of the look. Anyone up for posting instructions and tools on how to make your own theme?
It's stickied in this section...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=749683
The instructions are on making morphs, but it's where to start learning. Later you can make your themes CWM flashable.
read the link then start off small, get familiar with drawable folders first..
Use Apk Manager to tear apart the framework apk and you will find the drawable folder (this is where you'll find icons n such)... just my 2 cents

Yeah, that is a simple MM guide.
I wrote up a guide a while ago.. Just wasn't sure if I should post it here.

There's nothing unique about vibrant theming. The details like where to find various color codes, etc. may be different from other phones, but the process is the same.
A friend of mine made a great "getting started" guide in the main android theming forums you can find Here. For the details I suggest searching as you go or asking the help of one of our local themers.

I noticed your new thread. ([REF])How to theme.
I have a full brain. Do I get extra credit?
I'm actuall in the progress of making one but it's slow going.
Really, all that I'm doing is taking bits and pieces from themes and roms and making my own. It's sorta based off of my Community Hero Mix for the MT3G and G1 devices. Unfortunately since this is an totally different device that takes totally different ROMs I just can't use what I already have.
Master's theming walkthrough is a fantastic place to start! A good step-by-step that applies really to any apk to modify. I would read up on that one first...

UPDATE: NOTICE 22 Jan
i've received some complains and questions about my bravia engine demo, regarding the ability of my mod in some roms. they either said it's not working or they couldnt see any difference.
after some investigations, i confirmed that some of the roms "claiming" bravia engine included ARE NOT REAL or simply NON-EXIST, while some of them are included with the previous failed version that was not modded by me and i can do nothing
atm, there r only 3 roms have included my bravia engine mod and informed me about the inclusion of my mod in their roms with my name mentioned. for those with the FAKE ones, u will not find my name in their posts.
u may also find my mod included in some roms but without mentioning or crediting to me. in this case, however, i cannot tell if they work or not since i cant check them one by one
up to now, i have received acknowledgements or being credited from the rom makers listed below for the inclusion of my mod:

after a fortnight since i published a post saying that the integration of sony braiva engine and SGS2 gallery was a success, the development was paused for some reasons. and during these 2 weeks, i can hardly find anyone talking about the bravia engine thing. perhaps this could be due to some negative comments on the previous version or rumors, i dono (no disrespect)
for those who believes my version is a just another piece of fake mod also, pls take a look at my screenshots 1st, and i am sure you will have a different opinion about this mod. on the other hand, i don mind if you think it's a placebo after looking at the screenshots
now, i am considering if i should resume the development of this mod or not. however, i really wanna know if anyone still interested in it anymore. pls give me some feedbacks so that i can decide whether to continue working on this, or just keep it for my own use and remove this topic from xda

Can i just say a couple of things here. The bravia engine works on my xperia play no doubt. The screenshot of the 2 dogs or arctic foxes for before and after barely show any difference on my sgs2. Which at the start has a much better screen and much better picture quality than experia play even with bravia.

You are actually quoting the person that claimed it works and kanged the mod for a different device. Check my sig.
We should welcome any real development as this is xda-developers.
Not xda-noob-claiming to be dev, take donations kangorama circus...
So to the op, give it your best shot
Btw, I think you need two devices side by side for comparison.
yes BE will work and is working on SG2. I get it to work (created from SEMC) 1 moth ago with help MIKE(dev with 10000+thx) and devs from X10. Standard libs not sufficient. & people who saying it will not work are ignorant.
also xloud works with customized kernel but this future I dont get to work fully. I have only cleared sound but not increased. Secondary Xloud cant demage GS2 speaker because Samsung is default using Boots and our speaker is better as have x10 SP.
but I am very disgusted with how quickly some people they can copy and steal other ideas.
If I will have enough time i will bring xloud and BE in my rom wih ICS and my Eleanor kernel with audio/video futures.
I have read a lot, this is only my opinion.
I am very angry at some people from XDA and i never forget it

i admitted it was NOT my idea to put bravia in sgs2 at the very beginning, and not until i studied the previous unworkable version released here. i do respect PFittech's works and ideas and i contacted him about this issue already. my understanding was, he wont mind if i really continue to work on this project my way.
besides, about using/copying others' ideas, i do understand and respect ppls new ideas and inputs, but on the other hand, i think it is not a bad thing to use others' idea actually provided that with credits to the original author.
may be u will have doubts in what i said, but i can tell u that, i am the first one to publised loop devices for I9000, the first one to mod the sms sent time, and the first one to publish and tweak available memory in the kernel sources. i believe that almost all users had used at least one of them before, either modded by me or enhanced by others. and to be frank, i think there r hardly to find ppl who realized or remembered my name or my works, may be less than 0.01%. so? therefore, i can understand PFittech's frustrations.

i wish i could have 2 sgs2 and show the effects side by side for comparison also, but i have one sgs2 only. i know it's hard to desmonstrate the differences without showing both of them at the same time. although i tried very hard to prove it, they can be viewed as fake results and i understand that. but i can tell you guys that, the screenshots taken from the stock gallery with bravia engine and se's gallery were identical. i compared the checksums of the files obtained and they were the same. anyway, let's see if i can prove it further without videos clips

lastly, thank you for showing me your supports guys!
hi all,
first of all i would like to say thank you for your supports, either for the finally output or for me.
after careful consideration, i tend to release a demo so that ppl can see the real effects when the braiva engine is turned on in the samsung gallery.
for the development, i think it will be better to let interested developers to join and enhance it in their own way with their own expertise individually or as a group. i believe this will benefit the whole community. i will publish a simple guide for the developers instead of working on it alone. however, it requires more time and efforts to deal with the smali files, plus dependencies, permissions, libraries and so forth in this case.
in fact, this is what i planned to. so probably in the coming few days, there will be some more info added.
thank you for your patients, and thank you for my fans and supporters
and as usual, i do enjoy sharing new or dirty tweaks and mods to all of you
for the whole story, pls refer to the references at the bottom of post 1, or visit my blog at http://ykkfive.blogspot.com

New User? Introduce yourself :)

I got this idea from over on the X8 forums and thought it would be a good addition over here aswell. Note to the mods, if there's any reason this thread shouldn't be here, then just get rid of it. Not like you need my permission eh?
New Member? Introduce Yourself
Hey everyone. This initiative is to prevent the creation of a new thread each time a new user to our devices wants to create a thread to say they're a new user and then ask a question which has been asked way too many times. So to keep our forum organized please use this thread to introduce yourself and ask any questions you may have, but not sure whether to make a new thread or not.
Before anything else please introduce yourself so that we could know you as well. Please take some time also to read the FORUM RULES to avoid any trouble and infractions from our moderators.
Let us warmly and nicely welcome our new members
I'll be checking in here regularly and hopefully some other of our more experienced users of this device will do the same. That way, we can all make you feel welcomed and answer any of those questions you may have.
Enjoy your stay and I look forward to speaking to you all.

Hey all
Firstly thanks for making this thread kidkarter.
I bought my Xperia S last month but to my dismay the phone bricked in two hours. Basically I was updating via pccompanion and a quarter of the way through the installation it stopped. Tried flashing back to GB but could never get past bootloop. Three weeks on and I received the replacement. The phone has it's good and bad but I'm very happy with it...and with the thorough support and development available at XDA! Looking forward to being part of the crew.
Cheers, -Red

Hey Tej. Welcome to these forums
I don't really know that much about unlocking BL or rooting and even though my device is rooted, I flashed a pre-rooted rom onto mine that was specific to my device. As I'm not sure if this is available for your device, I would suggest asking in that thread then say after a couple of days if you haven't received a reply, send the OP a little reminder of your post.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help

Is there not an unofficial way to get ICS onto the Sola? Or would you rather just do it officially?

Hey all
Firstly thanks for making this thread kidkarter.

Heya Red No problem at all. As I say, I seen it on the X8 forum and thought it would be good over here especially because we have 4 devices all into one section xD
Glad to hear that you've received your replacement I actually manager to brick my SXS within a few hours aswell but mine was just a major noob error by attempting it when I only had 35% battery left. Obviously it ran out mid-update and bricked my device. Luckily it was only a soft brick so I was able to come on here and find a solution to that. That's simply what I love about XDA

Hi im relatively new and only recently active, I have owned an xperia x10 mini pro, neo and s.
Dedicated Sony fan, though I currently have a xoom :S
Been on several forums but xda is a bit hard to get active on as there are so many users and there's not much sense of a community and you don't really get to know people as much
I'd go on to help people but there's like 5000 others who can help before me
Ill lurk around for the years to come

Hi there Will. 2 nice devices you've got there. Treat um nicely and they'll treat you better

Hey guys, I thought I'll introduce myself too, just for the sake of it. It's grown into a quite lengthy post, but anyway, here goes.
As a developer
Some of you may know me from the Desire scene, where I worked (the slacking-around-IRC-doing-random-stuff kind of work) on ICS and then switched to maintaining AOKP. I'm quite new to the Sony scene (excuse my using the word 'scene' here, it's just a short way of saying 'developer community' or something), but I'm learning the quirks and we (KeiranFTW, nickholtus, championswimmer and me) have set up a nice little team with the Big Project being bringing vanilla AOKP / KangXperiaProject to all 2012 devices. While waiting for the development to gain traction (and for FreeXperia to release their sources), I've also worked on a little side project - porting AOSP / AOKP to the Asus TF101, where I learned a bit about the new quirks introduced in JellyBean and forward-porting ICS stuff. Some more words on the Big Project: first we wait for the Xperia P to get an official ICS update. Then the plan is to try and build JellyBean for the P, just to see if we can make it work with ICS blobs and kernel sources. If we run into some issues that can't be solved without support / blobs from Sony, we'll fall back to building ICS. The Xperia P goes first in any case, then we'll investigate ways we can share the code with other U8500 devices, and release ICS based on Xperia P stuff for those.
As a user
I have a total of 3.5 Android devices: the HTC Desire, the Asus TF101, the Xperia S and the Nexus 7 (shipping). I've fallen in love with HTC when the N1/Desire series was released, but the following (Desire HD, Sensation, IncS) series disappointed me multiple times, so I turned away from HTC and switched to Sony. When it comes to tablets, I've had a lot of good experience with ASUS in the past (desktop components, laptops, network equipment and most of their products really), so the TF101 and now the Nexus 7 were an obvious choice. I'm also an AOSP fanboy (and a hater of most vendor skins), and my faith in AOSP has grown way stronger when ICS, and then JB were released. I sincerely hope that in the future vendors will stop skinning Android and just provide the hardware, but for now I just use custom ROMs wherever possible. I'm currently running AOKP on both the Desire and the TF101 and Sony's stock with Trebuchet launcher on the XPS.
As a person
I'm a geek when it comes to mobile technologies, Linux, board games, anime and Japanese culture in general, quality sound / music and smart computer games (i.e. not Call of Duty and friends), in no particular order. I enjoy playing and designing games as a hobby, though I've never released anything as a developer and some of the ideas never went further than pen and paper prototypes. I'll go into a bit more detail on that later. I don't like people who are too lazy to actually use their brain and RTFM / search before asking, especially when it comes to questions that have been answered multiple times, though I often don't mind the general / off topic chit chat in release (i.e. not dev) threads.
Mobile technologies
I'm an Android fanboy in a good sense, though I try to stay open minded when it comes to iOS, WP8, B2G and other competing products. I've been very enthusiastic about Meego, Maemo and the idea of a Qt/Linux based mobile operating system that is largely compatible with desktop Linux and now I'm closely following the Plasma Active project and the Vivaldi/Spark tablet for largely the same reasons, though I think Linux on tablets is not quite there yet.
Linux
I've never really 'fanboyed' Linux in terms of thinking that Linux > any other OS like some people do. But it works the best for my tasks, and I'm looking forward to the large community growth that is going to happen after Windows 8 is released, as it's going to be a change too big for many people, and the big release of Steam that is hopefully to remedy one of people's most common complaints - gaming. I currently run Arch Linux testing / community-testing / kde-unstable / AUR VCS packages, which is about as unstable as Arch can possibly get, but it somehow works for me.
Board games
I don't like TCG's and other 'collecting' games (except for Warhammer, I enjoy playing it even though I don't have an army of my own), I prefer games that are fun to play with friends and don't take a lot of time and rule reading because you can get more people in, especially those who never played it before. My personal favourites are Risk, Munchkin and (since recently) Cards Against Humanity.
Anime
I love good anime (faves: SE: Lain, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Spice and Wolf, Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu, Soul Eater, Steins;Gate), know about the existence of Japanese music and don't think jRPGs are long and overcomplicated, which already makes me an otaku for some people, though I don't consider myself one.
Quality sound / music
I don't have any specific genre of music I prefer over the rest, there's a special 'Music that I like' genre which includes music that I like. Most common last.fm tags in my library are metal, anime and post rock, if that matters. I also have a weird sense of 'how stuff should sound' that usually involves good headphones and often doesn't have too much in common to how the original performer intended it to sound. I currently use Sony V6 headphones with the Xperia S, my laptop (ASUS N55, Realtek ALC883) or my old Creative Zen player.
Smart computer games
This includes games that actually make you think about what you're doing or about some other matters that exist outside the game world. This includes many indie games (LIMBO, Braid) and excludes most AAA titles (Call of Duty series). I also enjoy hardcore RPGs with as many choices as possible both in the script and in character development. The upcoming games on my wishlist are Torchlight 2, Borderlands 2 (those are not very 'smart', I know, but the originals were really fun, and sometimes it's all that matters), 0x10c, Dishonored, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 (if it's actually developed by Bethesda now) and some other less known projects like Defense Grid. I currently play Skyrim with a bunch of mods, Minecraft with a bunch of friends and re-enjoying Final Fantasy X on my PS2 (which is the only console I own now, and likely the only one I'll own ever).
Whoo, that's been one hell of a long post. Anyway, enjoy and feel free to ask if you have any questions, whether they are dev related or not
P.S. Please, please, don't quote this whole post. If you want to highlight something, remove the rest of the quote.

It's a fun story really. I saw the eight-way lock screen on Virtuous Wossname on a friend's DHD and I wanted to have that on my Desire. So I just went ahead, read the docs and built it from Evervolv's tree. I had some experience with random Linux hacking, so I knew my way around makefiles and git, so I got the code together, built it and thought I'll just throw it out there for anyone who wants it. I did and it all kind of snowballed on me.
I thought I might introduce myself too
My first Android powered phone was a HTC Wildfire, which I couldn't flash anything on till about a month after getting it because of HTC and their stupid S-ON bootloader lock. At the time I had to wait for AlphaRev X (a.k.a Revolutionary as it is called now) so I could "unlock" my bootloader and install a custom recovery. This was back in November 2011, and I didn't even know what a kernel was then, you could say I was a noob back then, except I actually knew what the search function is for.
On this, I flashed CyanogenMod 7, and forgot about it, until ICS source code was released (around November) and I didn't know how to build from source so I started learning, helped port from another phone (Droid Eris) and fixed the touchscreen driver in the kernel to get a half working ROM. Unfortunately the Wildfire didn't have a GPU and so support for it was dropped by CM in ICS and that is probably not a bad idea considering the last HTC release was 2.2.1 (Froyo).
I then bought an Xperia PLAY, and started tinkering with development, created a few ROM's based of the stock Sony OTA's, then a few more kernels. But I still wanted to learn to build AOSP from source.
So, I learned how to compile, and how to fix compilation errors, and all that. Then I waited for FreeXperia to release CM9, and they did. It had a few problems though, they were using kernel sources for Arc S ICS beta not meant for the Play, so deep sleep was broken and so was hardware acceleration. So, I got the newer Sony kernel sources meant for the Play for the ICS beta, and rebased their stuff on top of it, added a few optimisations such as zRam and tweaks, and then released it.
Then, one day I had a personal message from FXP asking me where my kernel sources are so he can track them. We had a short conversation and I started working with Jerpelea and the FXP team. I fixed a few things here and there into CM, but nothing major.
I stopped working with FreeXperia after as I didn't agree with some of the rules set in place by the CM team for people developing on CM (I didn't get told them all, you have to be part of the CM team for that) and so I started to lean to AOKP.
Sony then released the Xperia U, and it didn't pick up much developer interest in these forums, there was no recovery. I wanted to develop for the Xperia U, and with FXP confirming CM support on it, I wanted to bring AOSP/AOKP onto it, so I talked with K900 who maintains HTC Desire in AOKP, and we decided to form a team, me, nickholtus, K900 and championswimmer. It is the AOKP Xperia Project.
Then we made recovery (after several attempts (documentation == null)) for the P, U and Sola.
Then the community helped raise funds so I could get an Xperia U (which is awesome btw)
And, now I am here posting on this thread.
Sorry if my English is bad here, I am not used to writing this much
PS: If you want to contribute to AOKP Xperia Project, look here: https://github.com/AOKPXperia, pull requests are welcomed. If you would like to join the team, show us what you got and what you can do.
