[Q] CM 10.1 No Data on Straight Talk - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a ST T-mobile SIM, data has been, and was working, up until last night. I haven't changed any APN settings up until then, or any other settings on the phone. Since data has stopped working, I've reset the APNs, tried custom settings for straight talk and t-mobile, everything else I could think of.
The weird part is, it SAYS I am connected to Tmo's data services. I see the H/3G icon, it tells me I am connected under settings>about phone. The only thing that happens, is I now get a notification telling me to "Sign Into Network". Clicking this takes me to a website, which loads, for t-mobile, telling me that my data plan does not work on this device. Obviously, if I can access a webpage, data is working, to some extent. I have only ever used in excess of 2gigs of data once, which was a few months ago, outside of that I usually use around 350-500 mbs a month. I can't imagine they'd be throttling my data now, and even if they were, it shouldn't be completely cut off.
Any ideas/suggestions? I've tried everything I could think of (even resorted to chatting with ST's customer service....You can imagine how that went...)

No, still hasn't been resolved. Contacted ST twice now, just got off the phone with them today, they think it might be my SIM card, so they're sending me a new one. I'll update when I get it, whether or not it works.
Weird thing I've noticed is, when I click the "sign into network" notification, and the webpage starts to load, if I quickly go back to the home screen, and try something that requires data, it usually works, in the time that it takes the site to load. After that, nothing. I don't believe it's my SIM, honestly, I think something is up on Tmo's end, but I keep getting these lackeys at ST, and after the usual run around of restarting my phone and trying new APN settings, they do this.

I have this exact problem. Started when my billing cycle turned over on the 10th and my reserve kicked in.
ST T-Mobile Sim on Samsung Nexus S. Worked just fine for 3 months.
I've talked with ST Customer Service 3 times. And they could not help me. I chatted over 10 times and they all say the same thing. Change your APN settings, pull SIM, Reboot.
I've tried every APN setting, Wiped my phone to stock and nothing works.
The last time I talked with ST, I got them to re-provision my ST account. He guaranteed this would fix the issue. It did not. They won't call T-mobile and open a ticket without you being on another phone.
I think this is on the T-mobile side of things. For some reason my SIM's Data Plan isn't or didn't transfer over to t-mobile when the new billing cycle started.
I'm changing to diff carrier this weekend. ST can kiss it.

I contacted Straight Talk again. They called T-Mobile and was told everything was fine with my account. They told me to refer to my MFG.
I've bought a T-Mobile Pre-paid and put it in the phone(Nexus S) and data works fine.
I put my Straight Talk sim in my Galaxy S and it can't get data and takes me to T-Mobiles site for an upsell...
Straight Talk Customer Support is useless, and does not care. Their terms of use states they don't guarantee data, and told me to call corporate 1-800-876-5753, as they won't refund my money.

roam on att help

my friend tom got his galaxy s like two months ago. he has a even more plus plan with unlimited everything on tmobile and he used that in a iphone 3g for a year with no problems and he could roam with no issues on att.
with his new vibrant its not working! it takes forever to try to connect then gives a error. the sim should be good since it roams in two other unlocked phones..
for the note, his phone IS unlocked... that was the first thing we thought of..
the error is: unable to select network.. your sim card is not allowed to connect to this network
this phone is a quadband phone so it should work.. we have put a att legit iphone sim in it and it works great.. what gives? why can't he roam on this new phone when other phones do? running bionix rom.. have tried updates, wondering if anyone has any opinions or info
we've already tried changing network settings with *#0011#, gone into service mode *#*#197328640#*#* with no luck
edit: we've tried not allowing the phone to connect to our local att 3G band (1900) and use all other bands again with no luck. the phone connects to canada's rogers network tho.. weird..
anyone check this out yet?? anyone got it workin? any reports would be killer ...
we have tried more settings through service mode still with no luck. when we specify certain bands and leaving the att 3G local band unchecked, it will not hop on T-mobile with the setting! Crazy! not sure if it's the rom, radio version or kernel but we will keep tweaking and posting results.. if anyone is having this issue or has concerns any posts or signs of life would be cool lol

Unfortunately, I don't have a solution, but I've been working on this same issue since september. I originally contacted tmo about the problem to see if they somehow hadn't provisioned my phone/account for roaming. Needless to say they were not much help. They suggested I exchange the phone for a new one, which I did, and I still have the same problem.
I'm in a rural area of california where tmo has roaming on att towers. My girl has tmo service with a different samsung phone and she can roam on att just fine. She can send/receive calls and text. I even put my sim in her phone, and it works, so I've pretty much narrowed the problem down to an issue with the vibrant itself.
My phone is not unlocked, so we've ruled that out. I'm running bionix fusion with ji2 modem now, but I've had the issue with the stock phone before ji6, and after ji6 ota. I've tried messing around with the service menu the same as you, and I haven't got anywhere either.
I have been able to get the phone to at least lock on to att by adding the apn internet2.voicestream.com, and it will get past the "not registered on network" message. Unfortunately, it won't complete a call or send a message, it just times out after about 15 seconds and drops back to the previous menu (depending on whether I tried to dial out of contacts, the call log, or the dialer). But it does not give me an error message, it behaves as if the call connected and immediately hung up.
I had given up on it for the past couple weeks, but I have time now to try and work it again. Let me know if you've gotten anywhere, and I'll do the same.
The fix is: when you're in an att roam area, set your phone to gsm 850 only via the service menu. If your phone doesn't auto lock on the att network, search for available networks and choose att. After that you should be able to send and receive calls and texts.
after yet some more messing around, still no luck. it's clearly a thing with tmobile not allowing roaming..... because i read many threads off the gooooogle that say tmobile is pretty much going away and any "contractless" plans don't have roaming so they don't lose money....
dickheads. at least he's grandfathered in with a good unlimited everything plan tho..

the other day i was out of tmobiles network coverage and on att voice and edge not 3g. i live in texas

tried the app RoamControl with no luck. it uses different tmobile bands when in "roam only" mode. anyone have any luck yet?

[Q] Is AT&T lying to me?

I have a grandfathered data plan (updated from MediaMax when I got my original 3G phone).
When I purchased the GS2, the person removed it, and replaced it with a new data plan, and no text/mms plan (without my knowledge or consent). Well, I just now realized that I wasn't receiving or sending texts.
I called AT&T, who explained he had removed my grandfathered unlimited data+1500 sms/mms, after an hour and a half on the phone they were able to get my plan back on.
Well, after I hung up, I realized that my internet isn't working, so I called back.
After troubleshooting for an hour, the tech support guy said the reason my internet won't work is that I need a new high speed data plan, and that my grandfathered plan (which worked fine on my Captivate) won't work.
He wanted me to pay the same amount, but for half the minutes etc.
Is this true? I feel like he was lying to me.
I haven't heard of anyone else having problems with grandfathered plans.
Is it worth me arguing more with AT&T, or will they all tell me that a new plan is required?

After I kept searching, I decided to try some new settings just in case.

Everything's working perfectly now. Just as I suspected the AT&T rep was a rotten liar. I had a gut feeling he was making up stories just because he didn't know how to get my internet working.
Anyway, hopefully this will help someone in a similar predicament.
I basically had the same problem, when I got my SGSII I immediately flashed the phone, did not even put the SIM in first. After I got it set up the way I wanted it I put the SIM in from my Captivate, I had no data. I wiped the device figuring I screwed something up and when it booted back up back to stock data still did not work. What I then did was check the APN and noticed it was different, so I created a new one based on the one from my Captivate and got my data working. I went to the AT&T store a few days later and asked about it, first they told me I needed a 4G SIM card. They changed my SIM and I tested it with the original APN from the phone, still had nothing. He then realized that I needed to have a 4G data plan, the 3G data plan I had was not compatible with the 4G phone, he changed my unlimited 3G plan to an unlimited 4G plan and everything worked, actually started getting better speeds as well. Only reason I even cared was I did not want to play with the APN every time I flashed a new ROM.

Sim Unlocked

So I've read enough about the GS4 being Sim unlocked from Verizon. We are traveling to St Maarten in the Caribbean in April, and I'm just trying to confirm that its really as simple as purchasing a local sim and popping it in. My GS4 is unlocked and rooted since the MDK bootloader, but my wife's is a work provided phone, and I'm not allowed to touch it (although she always asks me how I tether....sorry dear...I'm not allowed to touch yours). Our resort has wifi but only in the lobby, and I'm not interested in data (I'll be on vaca) but I want to just be able to text my wife if need be while exploring the island.
Anyone know what I can expect to pay for a local sim? Don't even need a lot of minutes....just be able to text back and forth if we need to.
My FIL is on my Verizon plan. He's leaving in a few days for Aruba and Curacao.
He contacted Verizon and was told he could pay $5 for cheaper phone and texting rates while on his trip. I think it is $1.49 or $1.99 per minute for calls and .50 to send text and .05 to receive them.
Data is crazy expensive ($25/100mb with Int'l plan or $22ish per mb without) so I would turn off data sucking apps or seriously limiting it (turn off background sync, etc) even if you opt for the Verizon data plan. Also, if you don't turn off the data before you leave you will most likely get hit with data charges as soon as you land.
I would recommend getting local data sim and using Hangouts or some other non-texting data based chat service instead of texting each other.

Hangouts I can do....but that uses data. And I'm not going to have wifi on the beach.....MAYBE the beach at our resort....but I've read over and over that wifi is only in the lobby....so who knows where the range will end until I get there. I guess your saying leave data off until I get a local sim in it. Once the local sim is in it, I'll stop getting my verizon data? or will I have to stop gmail, and disable all other data apps?
I know what my phone does, and what apps use what data....and how you can set some up for wifi only....but my wife is clueless tech wise. I guess I'm not going to find a local sim with unlimited texting huh (or even a reasonable number of texts).
Once you replace the Verizon sim (keep it and make sure you know which is yours and which is the wife's because it does matter and you'll be putting them back in as soon as you get home) then your connection to Verizon is gone.
As soon as you install the local sim you will have data and/or phone coverage based on what you bought. If you can get two cheap data only sims that would be the way to go. Then use data services for doing instant messaging to contact each other.
All your data using apps will work just as they did at home. They don't care how you connect to the internet. GMail, Hangouts etc will all work as long as you have a data service.

Ok, I gotcha now. I would love to find a data only Sim. It will be pretty easy to tell which sim is which upon return... I'll just make a test call to see whose phone rings when I dial my number :laugh: Thanks for your help. I don't want to pay Verizon $25 for 100MB as I'm sure some app I forget about will run me over.....and my wife's phone is run by her work....so local sim is the only way to go....or bring her rezound along.....but I'm not sure that phone was ever truly SIM unlocked without a specific Rom...and my rezound hacking days are long behind me.

I just did this last week in the UK - stock GS4 running MK2, with a SIM from ekit.com.
All I did was to insert the SIM, set the phone to GSM mode, define the APN, and you're done. Finding a cheap carrier for data in the Caribbean is tough, however.

So I've been reading on some travel forums about queen of SXM. She is a part time resident of St. Maarten that does rental phones. I emailed her and for $8 for the week I am renting a SIM card. Any voice/data must be added after that in $5 increments. But data is mostly 2g (and expanding to 3g but likely not widely available). It's only $0.55 per day for the data and it's unlimited (since its so slow, its not like your going to be using a lot anyway). So basically for $13 a phone I can get data and no voice so we can message back and forth. Is Hangouts or what's app going to be reliable on a 2g network? I've read that wechat has designed their app for better use on 2g networks (in places like India and other emerging markets). On my Rezound I was able to force the phone into 1x only mode, but not so much on the S4 to be able to test it.....unless I can find an area with a really crappy signal.

Flashed DNA Incoming SMS and Cell data not working

As the title says, my data and incoming texts aren't working. Sending txts works and calling works fine. For data I am getting a verizon access page whenever I try to go anywhere. I have Selectel and they have said that everything is fine on their end. I did just renew and they send a renewal txt when you renew and I did get that txt but have received nothing else.
There wasn't any change that precipitated this that I know of. Just woke up one day and poof, half the stuff is broken. I just tried reinstalling a rom but that had no affect. I am not sure what to do or check.
If Selectel is CDMA you should consider going to a GSM prepaid carrier. It requires no flashing. I used to have all my phone's flashed to Boost until I would lose my profile set for various reasons , usually if I was unlocking the boot loader. You need to check your settings ->about screen to see if your number is still listed for the phone. If it's something funky or all zeroes your data profile got reset somehow.

Well, as nice as that would be, including faster data, my need right now is for an inexpensive plan on the network with the best coverage. Thats Verizon, period. So a Verizon MVNO is really my only choice. Where I live none of the other networks really come all that close. I get out and push the boundaries often enough that its what I need. Besides that, For a $30 a month plan, nothing else that I have seen really matches Selectel's value in terms of minutes, txts, and data.
As for my number showing in the settings, its in there, just as it should be.
I understand, I had Boost w/shrinkage @$35 and wasn't very happy about giving that up but the stress and headaches of paying someone $60-$75 dollars EACH time I needed a flash was bleeding me dry. Often times my 3G stopped working and I'd have to contact the guy to reflash, then the phone wouldn't connect properly to my computer yada yada. Sounds like you are fine with Selectel so cheers to you but fyi when you have a flashed phone it makes it almost impossible to get support with it too from the carrier because they have all the original device ID #'s for the phone you are using not the ones that were changed. Boost told me the exact thing Selectel is telling you the last time my 3G stopped working and I would get a browser message saying I needed to fill my account, which by the way wasn't true. They told me everything was fine on their end.

Emergency Calls Only on LTE

Can someone please help me with this?
Everything was fine until 2-3 days ago. When all of a sudden I was unable to send text messages or make phone calls. All the while I could access internet without any issues.
If I switch to 2G or EDGE for the Subnetwork, I can make calls and send SMS.
How can I fix this?
Could dropping the phone have caused this?
Dropping could certainly break something, of course, but let's assume that's not it.
What carrier? Is the phone officially supported by them (ie, IMEI matches the carrier)? Are you on their official ROM? Does/did your VOLTE work (before and after the "few days ago")?
Some carriers are switching over to VOLTE-only setups, so they may be testing that to see what works/doesn't before they make it final. In other words, maybe your phone is not "officially" supported by VOLTE on the carrier, which is why it's failing? Without VOLTE, I think text may fail as well (even if you're not actively on a call?)
That would be my first guess. In my case, for example, I was on a US998 phone (per IMEI) running VS996 on Verizon. Since the IMEI didn't match a VZ phone, they refused to say it was compatible (even though it worked fine for many years). The IMEI stuff is a bunch of BS, but that's a whole separate topic... but I wonder if this is what you're running into. It's the carrier's way to force you into "their" device, even though it's not any different from any other variant (when the proper ROM is installed).

Carrier texts should theoretically still work as they are "data". It's the "voice" part of VoLTE that won't work. That's why I can still receive carrier texts on my Galaxy Note 9 with AT&T -- which still has older firmware (so I can be rooted). A few months ago, I lost the ability to make/receive phone calls on my AT&T number when 3G towers were decommissioned in my area... But luckily I have Google Voice number, which also uses "data" (VoIP) so I make/receive all my Google Voice phone calls. (That's been my main phone number for years.)
However, I no longer can make/receive AT&T phone number calls -- which is fine. I switched Google Voice settings to data/Wi-Fi only instead of piggy backing on carrier phone number. Yet, I still receive AT&T texts, which is good because my bank insists on using a "real" (carrier) phone number for SMS security code confirmation.

I'm with a company that uses T-Mobile towers. I connect just fine with 4G LTE, and get reasonably good speeds over it. But when I'm on 4G, I cannot make or receive calls or text. It says Emergency Calls Only.
So far, I've tried everything. I resettled network. I looked for different APN values that may fix the issue. When I couldn't think of anything else, I did a factory reset. (I mean, I wiped Data, and all other partitions in TWRP except for System and SD Card.) There have been no changes.
I'm starting to think the issue may be hardware, I did drop the phone a couple of times the day it stopped working. Though I usually end up dropping the phone once a day or every two days. I can't believe the screen hasn't cracked yet, at all. Could a drop from 3-4 feet on hard surface like tiles damage the antenna in such a way that only 4G data works?
I'm ready to give up and buy a new phone even though I can't really afford it. It would be awesome if I can get this to work.

I'm on T-Mobile towers with the US998. I don't think there is an issue with IMEI. How would I connect to data with 4G if that was the case?
I never had Volte on this phone. I do recall seeing it when I first got it but I'm running stock rooted Android 9.
When I say it used to work a few days ago, I mean it just stopped working at one point. I wanted to make a phone call, and all of a sudden, I couldn't. I noticed then that it says Emergency Only sign, so I walked around the house for about 15 mins to try to get signal. Then I went to my car and drove around, but nothing.
I messed around with Network settings, and figured out that Voice and TXT worked when I switch to a lower 'Sub-Network' setting that says, "GSM / GSPR / EDGE Only".
To get 4G Data back, I have to switch it back to "LTE/Legacy 3GPP multi"
These two are found under "GSM/UMTS Settings", after clicking on "System Select" in "Mobile Networks ".
I want to also mention that my carrier website has been talking about a data migration that would affect phones using their old SIM Card.
When I saw that, I called them and had them send me a new SIM. I thought surely this must be it, but the new SIM works exactly like the old one.
Perhaps the migration or whatever it is they did that required new SIM cards just doesn't work well with my phone? Even though, before putting the order in, the rep I spoke to did check my IMEI and said that my phone is compatible.
Agreed, it doesn't sound like an IMEI issue.
FWIW, I showed a 4G connection on a phone (I don't remember if it was my V30 or a Galaxy S10+ that I was going to replace it with). On that phone, at one point, but there was no actual connection. So, the indicators aren't always accurate. That's why I thought maybe the data isn't really working, and if data isn't working then VOLTE won't work... and with many of the carriers switching off non-VOLTE calling, that could kill the ability to make calls?
In your case, you said data worked... but if VOLTE was never enabled, and the carrier dropped non-VOLTE, then, again, you may lose calling.
In any case, these were my theories. I think you're on top of the situation but I don't have any other ideas for you to try...
Instead of buying a new phone, have you considered installing and setting up Google Voice, as ChazzMatt said? I recently had to do that because AT&T's 3G shutdown meant that I could no longer place or receive calls. I don't know why you can't also send or receive texts, but the Google Voice app has the ability to do that, so maybe try using that after you've set it up.

I never had Volte on this phone. I do recall seeing it when I first got it but I'm running stock rooted Android 9.
When I say it used to work a few days ago, I mean it just stopped working at one point. I wanted to make a phone call, and all of a sudden, I couldn't. I noticed then that it says Emergency Only sign, so I walked around the house for about 15 mins to try to get signal. Then I went to my car and drove around, but nothing.
I messed around with Network settings, and figured out that Voice and TXT worked when I switch to a lower 'Sub-Network' setting that says, "GSM / GSPR / EDGE Only".
To get 4G Data back, I have to switch it back to "LTE/Legacy 3GPP multi"
These two are found under "GSM/UMTS Settings", after clicking on "System Select" in "Mobile Networks ".

There's been reports T-Mobile which is now merged with Sprint has borked the ability for VoLTE/VoWiFi calling on US998 firmware phones (native or Frankenstein'ed). Apparently they only allow it now on T-Mobile H932, whereas pre merger they were happy to give VoLTE and voWi-Fi calling to "US998" phones
First, it was reported with new SIM cards they were distributing earlier this year. Then people who kept their old SIM cards found they didn't work after a forced "security update."
This seems to have also trickled down to the T-Mobile MVNOs.
This is why we told someone else recently they should probably convert their phone from US998 on T-Mobile to Verizon VS996 firmware.
Then get a Verizon sim card or Verizon MVNO SIM card, and activate it in an old cracked screen Verizon phone off eBay, then put that already-activated SIM card into their "VS996" V30.
They will have VoLTE and VoWi-Fi calling.
Alternatively, if you really want to stick with T-Mobile network, you can do what @osprey00 suggested -- which is get a Google Voice number and use it as a tool to forward your carrier calls to it.

For ME -- I've been using Google Voice for the past 10 years as my main phone number. I ported my carrier phone number at the time to Google Voice. Then got throwaway carrier numbers (whoever had cheapest plan) but never gave those to my friends. To my friends nothing ever changed. I've had the same "number" for the past two decades.
But within the past couple years, I had to start giving my bank and my cable company my carrier phone number for SMS security codes. Very annoying, because in the past they used my Google Voice number to text me with no problem.
So, even though under my current firmware (on my rooted Note 9) I cannot get carrier phone calls, I still have LTE data. And with the LTE data, I can use Google Voice (calls and texts) because it's VoIP. I also get AT&t carrier texts, as that is also data. It's just AT&T phone calls I cannot send or receive.
AT&T deactivated the SIM card in my native US998 V30+ and sent me a replacement phone, which is a Samsung Note 9. I'm staying with AT&T for a reason. Otherwise I would probably pull the "V30" Verizon trick also.
I bought both my wife and my elderly mother 64GB V35 phones -- which is basically an upgraded 64GB V30. (They previously had native US998 V30.) AT&T gives V35 VoLTE and WiFi calling, and for them there was nothing new to learn.

I think it was a hardware problem, honestly.
No matter what I did, I even tried different ROM to ensure I didn't mess around with root settings and somehow enabled or disabled something that I should not have. I tried flashing stock radios, and no, nothing would fix it.
I took my brothers phone to see if the SIM card would work with his phone, an unlocked Google FI phone. As soon as I installed the SIM, and booted up the phone, I could tell it was working perfectly even on the lock screen. Right away the status showed the name of the wireless company, and active 5G data icon on the status.
I must have damaged the internal radio or the LTE data modem when I dropped the phone last. The screen of the phone never broke even though I dropped the phone countless times, though the back glass has cracked lines all over even if the surface is still smooth and the phone continued being waterproof (I tested).
Anyway, I have since bought a new phone and the Data/Text/Talk all work perfectly on it.
I'm not sure what I'll do with this phone, as selling it wouldn't be ethical. And I doubt anyone would buy a phone with the warning that service may not work.
Ah well, I may just keep and use it as a test device.

tried a rom on a j7 2015 because android 6 is going to be left and I only get emergency calls on lte and on 3g, no problem. It's not imei problem maybe exynos processor. I went back to 6.0.1 and no problem with 4g lite. By the way, I'm not in the USA.
