[Q] What are my options on 4.3 SCH-1545 on MJ7? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I have rooted my MJ7, and I now know that I can't really do anything. Now I am getting this annoying update popup from samsung every time I open my phone. Every time I try and install this update it fails. How can I get rid of this update pop up or make the update install work?

As of right now I am rooted, but was unable to install TWRP recovery via GooManager or through the terminal commands listed on their website. It just didn't work. I would love to install CM11, but I obviously need recovery first. What are my options for recovery?

You are out of luck only Baseband you can install a recovery on is MDK the first one shipped. You can however install a custom TW Rom with a program called Safestrap best of luck !

It most likely want's you to update to MK2. The reason it's not letting you is because you are rooted. Not sure what process to stop to get it to stop coming up.

I don't think so. I'm still on MJ7 and so are a lot of people. We just don't like ota of any kind that's all. I figured I wasn't taking anymore Chances. But as far as better options.. safestrap and Hyperdrive 12 are your only choices as of now.

SafeStrap 3.71

So, as of now, those of us still running VRUEMJ7 with TWRP either stay with MJ7 or SafeStrap/HyperDrive?

Is there anyone actively working on unlocking MJ7 that has a blog/tumblr/thread/etc with ongoing status updates? I got this phone for xmas from my parents and aside from Touchwiz being a POS, I like it for the most part (a few form factor things that bug me with the fkn buttons but not much else) but I'd love to throw CWM and CM11 on it. Some news that it might be unlocked would be awesome; or, worst case, to know nobody is working on it so I can get over it and try to return it and replace it with something less Samsung-encumbered.

There are a few people still working on it, but their chances are slim to none of ever unlocking it. There's been a $5k bounty on unlocking this phone for the last 7 months with no luck. If you want a VZW S4 that you can flash ROM's on, get a Dev edition or an MDK build off Swappa.

So I am new to the s4 and rooting. I really want to install the Hyperdrive ROM. I have been researching and researching what to do and I think i have found my answer for now and im not happy about it.
From what i gathered, since i installed the update and I am now on ME7, there is no root method bc they locked the phone down. Is this correct?

because of the bootloader will only allow signed packages to be installed on the phone and checks against older firmware and will not allow it. Unless you have the signed key you ain't flashing anything unless we find a workaround.

So why is there ROMs for the ME7 build if they can't be flashed?
This [email protected] sucks!
So, I'm stuck on ME7 as well (32GB S4, otherwise I'd just go down to the store and swap it, complaining about something -- seems they don't stock them at any local corporate stores).
I'm coming from a Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and we have OMAP-Flash, which is like a low-level PROM flashing tool from the Samsung R&D team, and I could fix even a DEAD, or bricked phone with that. Is there something like that here to get back the original bootloader? I cant believe we're stuck on this crap... How 'bout a 2nd-init like my Droid-x days, or something slick like SafeStrap on the RAZR family?
...Just thinkin' "out loud".

You're not quite understanding what a rom is and is not. There is no such thing as a rom for ME7. There are roms that use the ME7 base. They are flashable only by those who have the MDK bootloader. When a build number is listed for a rom, it is the build that the rom is based from.

The ROM's that the devs based on MDK have been updated with the ME7 code just like any good developer does. But the bootloader those users have is still from their MDK (original) install. Once you go ME7 you can never go back, downgrade, crossgrade or get beyond the bootloader, for now anyways. Someone will find a way.

Updating may soon not be such a big deal...got a group of great devs who may have had a huge breakthrough in the form of kexec kernel modules that may soon allow newer bootloaders to run custom ROMs based on aosp and not be limited to touchwiz...kexec lead to a fully unlocked boot loader on vzw gs3 and could bring this"for the love of god don't update" crap to an end!

Maybe but you're still using safestrap to hijack the boot sequence so your adding a rom on top of your stock rom giving you less room on your s4. I understand safestrap very well as I came from a DROID Bionic using SS then SS with kexec. I would still never give up MDK. If I had to ever replace my s4 with another s4 i'd be thankful for SS emencely but I'd never willingly give up MDK. And that's all I'm saying, I would never recommend giving MDK.

[Q] Google Play Edition MK2

Hi,
I have a Verizon Samsung Galaxy s4 with build number JSS15J.I545VRUEMK2, and I recently rooted it so I could run the Google Play Edition Rom. From various threads and guides I knew that I needed to use SafeStrap because you can't use CWM recovery on an MK2 device. After a couple of attempts installing the GPE Rom, I found out that the GPE roms i could find only work with SafeStrap and an ME7 device. Furthermore, I found out that the only ROM that works with and MK2 device is Hyperdrive 11. I was wondering if there is any way around this or, alternatively, if there are any plans to fix this.
Thanks in advance.

You need a custom recovery to load any ROM. Problem with the build you are running is you cannot install a custom recovery because the bootloader is locked down tighter than Fort Knox. Devs are working on a solution and hopefully they will succeed. Don't hold your breath though as it may take a long while.
Until then, you can root, uninstall and de-crapify the bloatware and crapware from the phone. Change the launcher to GEL and get something closer to a GPE phone. Done all this to my S4 and it runs much more smoothly and gives me excellent battery service.

[Q] Updating MDK and ME7

I asked a similar question back in October, but fell out of the loop again and didn't want to necro an old post. I just want to verify that the information I got back then is still relavent.
Is installing custom ROMs still the best way to bring my MDK S4 up to the current version? If so, what should I be looking for in a ROM title to tell me that it's just a stock ROM that gives the same experience as the OTA? Someone mentioned Deodex'd in my last post, but I have no idea what that means or if it's what I should be looking for.
And for an S4 that came stock with ME7? Should my girlfriend (with an ME7 update) just take the newest OTA and root that, or is there a benefit to sticking with ME7 and installing a ROM? If the answer is to go with a ROM then she'll want the stock new OTA experience as well for now, are there any ME7 ROMs available that can do that?
Thanks again guys!
Don't touch your MDK S4. Leave it on MDK with Loki. It's practically an unlocked bootloader with actual TWRP and CWM. You can still install 4.3 TouchWiz stock ROMs on it because you can change the kernel. Plus you can run AOSP ROMs, which is awesome.

You're girls me7 s4 might as well update to mj7 or mk2 (4.3) as then she'll still be using Safestrap. Mostly everyone is running Hyperdrive anyways. Great performance and battery life with that. Update it, throw Safestrap 3.71 on there then Hyperdrive 12....pretty much bug free.
As far as you're MDK phone just grab whatever AOSP 4.3 or 4.4 ROM you like. You're lucky to have that phone!!

I started the installation like 6 hours ago; is it supposed to take this long?
I had it rooted and got rid of all the bloatware from Verizon using titanium. Would that have something to do with it? Otherwise, I don't know what's going on. Thank you, and I apologize if this was addressed in any other thread.

[Q] Installing CyanogenMod on VRUFNK1

I'm helping my friend install CyanogenMod 12 on his S4 (jfltevzw). We've rooted it and we're currently doing a full backup through Safestrap in case anything happens. Once that's finished, I'm unsure as to what we should do. CyanogenMod's wiki has installation instructions for the Verizon S4, but it says in big bold letters to not attempt this if on a ROM newer than I545VRUAMDK. He's on the latest version that Samsung/Verizon have pushed out, which is I545VRUFNK1. Is there an alternate way to install CyanogenMod on top of the newer stock ROM, or is it not possible?

Dang, so there's absolutely nothing whatsoever that can be done? The page says you can't downgrade, but is anything at all possible now that he's beyond the MDK build? He really wants to make the switch and is fine with doing a complete wipe or whatever is necessary.
EDIT: I've been trying to read up on the VZW S4 and why this isn't possible, but I don't quite get it. Reading other threads it seems like the reason is because the bootloader is locked, but that can't be the case if he was able to install Safestrap. I'm coming from a Nexus 5 where everything is incredibly simple, so I apologize for my ignorance. (I don't mean to say you're wrong or anything as I have no idea myself, I just don't understand why it doesn't work on newer ROMs.)

you can install hyperdrive rom
its not lolipop but its worlds better then stock ...
also there is a chance of getting the 5.01 GPE edition rom running when Samsung releases the lolipop update for the vz s4
that would at least give us a working lolipop kernel to use with the gpe rombase
and hey you never know there could be a exploite in the lolipop rom/kernel that lets us get kexec working
Basically safestrap loads after the kernel but early enough to replace point to a different root for the system. So we can load what ever system we want... But are stuck with the kernel the phone booted. If the system is based on the stock kernel this is fine... But when it starts making calls to custom kernel stuff you will have trouble.
So Cyanogenmod only provides the GUI? I've installed CM on two B&N tablets and I've been asked to root a new Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4. I've assumed that, because it's new, it will have I545VRUFNK1 4.4.2. I rooted my VSG s3 years ago to 4.3 and there was no going back on that one. It looks like it's the same with VSG s4. So, if CM provides only the GUI, then a rooted VSG s4 can still access Google Apps? What is the concern with with TW based ROMs? Is it the recovery/backup feature or only being stuck with the VSG s4 GUI?

Nope, in order to get CM, you'll need to be on MDK. Samsung prevents downgrading.
