I've been using my sgs3 with smart stay enabled and noticed it doesn't seem to be sensing me looking at it.. I wear glasses.. and I'm wondering if this is a limitation ?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
I also wear glasses and i find it works fine for me. Remember it doesnt work in low lights.
I Just tested it and it's not working without glasses on either. I see the 'eye' in the notification bar flash after 15 seconds, then it dims the screen, then again 5 seconds later and then screen switches off.
I've had smart stay enabled since day 0 and the phones had a few power cycles/reboots.

Doesn't work for me with my glasses on or off. Must be my face!
doesn't work for me either. not smart
maybe the galaxy just doesn't like your faces?
maybe that's what samsung meant with it being smart. hehe
seriously i have read somewhere it is the face it is tracking not just the eyes.
It even worked when my Dogs were looking at at a few times, and it's annoying because often I put phone off to the side not looking at it and still stays on and wasting battery.
I'm sorry, I didn't realise Samsung required users to look like dogs for this feature to work.
I'm thinking of flashing a custom Rom anyhow.. be interesting to see f it works on another Rom.

Well I do look a bit Ruff.
I just got my Galaxy. Seem to have the same issue, it's not working. Well I think there will be a software update soon enough.
If I consciously blink every so often I'm able to keep the screen on, but if I don't move or blink it turns off - at least that's how it seems to me.
Can't really get it working consistently yet.
I've had my phone since launch and it dimms but never turns off. I wear both glasses and contact lenses.
If the front camera is.nt pointed towards your face it may turn off however which is annoying sonetimes

Hi,
I got smart stay working!
I opened the camera, switched to front facing and positioned the camera so that my face was in the centre of the screen and taking up about 50% of the area.
Now when switching to home screen the little eye kept popping up and going away and the screen stayed on!
Paul
I noticed it works flawless. I have it set too 30 seconds.

Great
I find it very useful and works great, I don't wear glasses and I'v only had it two days but does as expected, I can look at it for 10 minutes and it won't turn off, if i point it away from me it turns off after my timeout.
I found if I closed my eyes and squinted one eye a tiny bit open it still didn't turn off though, but it's not like I'm playing hide and seek with it.

when i watch the screen, the screen didn't turn off, -> ok, this is work

Correction, it has problems in landscape mode.

I find it is a mixed bag. It rarely turns off when I am looking at it. But on lots of apps the screen dims meaning I have to touch the screen anyway. This rather defeats the point if you ask me!

Is it normal for the notification light to barely work? Most of the time it barely works, but once in a while it comes on. Same with using light flow... Same condition. I am stock, rooted, Trinity kernel, nothing else. Anyone have a perfectly working light? I've tried factory reset, re flashing, etc. I am hoping this isn't a hardware problem but I think I would take a good screen ice a good notification light.

Mine hasn't worked since I got it last week. Reading around the forum it would appear that it is not uncommon. I think it is a bug within the OS, some folks have had luck forcing it on using some app in the Play Store, while others have not been so well off.
Some people have had success getting the notification light to work by rebooting when charging. This worked for me but I know it hasn't worked for everyone.
Problem must be in Google software. Mine too was the like described above while stock. I just installed AOKP & the rom has a led-light settings control. In it you can set colors, blink time & rate, etc. Works fine for whatever you have set it for.

It's really weird that some people on stock are having problems with the notification lights... I'm assuming you have the settings for pulse notification on... and also that you know that on stock, the LED lights up only when the screen is off...
That said, I've had no problems with the LED notifications with custom ROM (my AOSP+, AOKP, CM10.1 & Evervolv)... haven't use PA, so I can't comment there!!
Only saw this while on stock. No issues with CM10.1

I've gone through three units for various issues. The first two had a perfectly working LED, the one I kept only works when booted while plugged in. So it's random and not a user issue at all.

If it isn't user related then is it faulty hardware or Google software?

Wait a minute. This thing has a notification light? I received mine yesterday and it hasn't worked yet. I charge it and nothing whether it's on or off. Can I turn it on?
Edit: WTF!!!! Just to make sure I plugged it in while the screen was on and nothing. I will give this tablet some credit on the the quality and awesome hardware it has but just from having it since yesterday I'm getting really pissed at the lagging in the browser and gaming. I know I can install the aokp browser and that will fix one issue but to fix the other I'm going to have to install an overclockable kernel to boost things to see if it helps. Then from what I've read, once you do that you might have overheating issues!!!! Geese!!!

The notification light works once you restart the tablet with the charger plugged in
Just throw lightflow on it and be done with it. Mine wasnt working either, but put lightflow on it and it works great now.

Easier said than done. The replacement may have light bleed or dust under the screen. The three replacements after that might have issues too.

Guys don't get me wrong. I love this damn thing. The screen is awesome and I installed ocean browser and disabled chrome and it Friggin FLIES in internet browsing. Was getting very frustrated yesterday though until I installed the new browser. One problem solved and only one more to go with stopping the lag in gaming. I know the hardware can handle it but I guess it's down to the thermal throttling from what I understand. If we can fix that and keep it from overheating this thing would be unstoppable.
Edit: the notification light thing just irritates me a little having spent over 500 on this thing and it everything not working out of the box. I know I could fix it with light flow but I shouldn't have to do that.

Mine do light up. It needs to be dark or you need to cover up the sensor.
turn off your lights or go in a dark room. They DO light up and if yours don't, you have an issue.

Mine have been intermittent. Sometimes they light up and most of the time they don't. I love it when they work, it really helps. I keep missing the right spot for the back button unless I can see it. Mine would turn on when I rotated the phone to landscape and then go off again when rotated back to portrait. For the last hour they've been on all the time.
I just tried the light sensor theory and it's 100% right. I shined a bright flashlight at the ambient light sensor and the buttons turned off. Took the flashlight away and the buttons turned back on.
edit: crap, I spoke too soon. They turned off again and now won't turn on no matter what I do. They came on for a few seconds and then went off again. Now they're still off. I look forward to seeing them again soon, just wish I knew what makes them stay lit up.

My keys don't turn on unless I'm in a totally dark room, with no lights on anywhere. Frankly I think it's pretty stupid. I can't see the keys at all for about 90% of the time I'm using it. It would be nice to have a switch to just turn them on and leave them on. Maybe a widget but would probably require root.

If this phone weren't so awesome in every other way the (un)lighted buttons would be a deal breaker for me. It's pissing me off although I know eventually I'll get used to where the keys are supposed to be. The few times when the keys light up makes me pissed off for all the times when they don't.
If your keys stay lit all the time there must be a setting somewhere to turn them on. ??
Maybe a poll would be appropriate - see if this is a big problem or if I have a defective phone.

By the way I like them to be lit up all the time.

I just bought an s4 today with Verizon. I'm laying here in bed and I noticed something strange which I never saw on my note 2 or my s3. I was reading a Web page with my brightness turned all the way up and it seemed like every 20 secs r so it would get a little dimmer then it would get bright again. I have adjust screen tone turned off. Then I went to settings, display, brightness and I see this message that says something like max brightness had been turned down to avoid overheating. Is this why my screen seemed to be dimming then getting bright again? Yes, the phone was quite warm during all of this. It also only happens when the brightness is turned all the way up.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
Its because of the heat if your phone it turned the brightness down. Because it could be a big source if heat. Interesting enough that has never happened to me.
This happens at any brightness I think and not related to heat- some of the main browsers have a slight auto adjust brightness even if the phone setting is turned off. I read it a few times so I assume it is that. I see this as well using Chrome.
In a dark room, have brightness to middle or something, and be on a light/white web page in Chrome.Pull the notification bar down and without really noticing, the screen will get slightly brighter due to the darker color. But drag the bar back up and instantly you can barely see the screen go back slightly darker again for the browser.
It was happening using any app not just a browser. I literally sat here and didn't touch the screen at all and I could see it go from bright to dimmer then to bright.. Back and forth..
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
And I've seriously never seen that message about brightness being turned down on my s3 or note 2. I don't even know why my s4 is so warm right now..
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
guys, it's a heat issue.
when the phone reaches a certain temp (i believe it's around 35 degrees C), it automatically dims down your display, no matter waht the brightness. you can be on 0 brightness, and it will dim anything that's a bright page, like a bright white.
test it by doing this: be in the browser when you notice it dim, and tap on the URL bar to bring up the keyboard...notice how bringing up the keyboard restores the brightness to what it was before that? that's because now the screen isn't engulfed in a super bright white screen..now it's divided between half bright white, and half darker from the keyboard, so it thinks "okay, the screen isn't fully white now, so we can go back to original brightness."
i suppose another way of showing why this is, which is much easier and idk why i didn't write this first lol but go into the brightness control in the display menu when it does it, and notice how it says "screen birghtness will be lowered to reduce risk of overheating" or soemthing. it only says that when you hit a certain temp.
the phone gets really hot, period. that's just how the S4 is unfortunately. so you may notice this happening often; i do lol
My phone does this too. I was wondering why it was doing this too. I guess the heat issue makes sense.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda premium
Yeah dude that's exactly what the message said and I've never seen that before in my other phones. Don't understand why it got so hot? I wasn't even doing much... So the s4 naturally just gets warmer? My note 2 never got this warm, ever. I just want to make sure mine isn't messed up...

Also check for the "Screen mode". It is under Settings -> My device Tab -> Display -> Screen mode
I usually leave it at Professional photo for less saturated but more accurate color rendering. If you check "Adapt display" or "Dynamic" it will try to adjust contrast based on scene displayed which may look like brightening and dimming of display, if you had "Auto adjust screen tone" unchecked.
What does the auto button do?

I am using Galaxy note 2 and want such a application which will on/off the screen without using power button and also it should not use the proximity sensor.
The screen on/off should work only with screen touch.
Can anyone please help me for this?
I know its not ideal, but theres a toggle to turn the screen off, amd then maybe the stylus removed to turn the screen on. Otherwise I feel like that anything touching the screen would cause it to turn on in pocket, similar to when I used to have the screen turn on in my pocket when I recieved a text, and my phone was constantly being "touched" with the bloop sound

There is a feature in some kernels, Plasma for instance, that is called TouchWake. It will not do exactly what you're wanting, and there will be nothing that will because it would keep the phone from deep sleeping and drain your battery extremely fast (not to mention your phone would always be coming on in your pocket because the screen registers touch through clothes if they're thin like pockets are).
TouchWake is where when your screen times out you can set a time limit to just touch the screen to wake it back up instead of having to hit a button.
Other than TouchWake being built into certain kernels, for the use like I explained above, there is nothing remotely similar to what you're wanting. It would just drain the battery way too much because the screen will never be able to be completely powered because its always awake waiting on a touch.

I don't mean to say that under regular usage it would cause significant battery drain, I use it as well and have seen little to no change. I mean if the OP used it in the way he is wanting that it most definitely would cause significant battery drain because the screen would be constantly awake awaiting input instead of going to sleep after a set amount of time.
Even then touchwake wouldn't work for the OP unless he let the screen time out so it still isn't what he is looking for.

If you set the timeout to zero, then touchwake is constantly on, which is the way I've used it and there has still been no significant battery drain. I also haven't had any issue with it turning on in my pocket. I do, however, inadvertently turn it on often, which is why I wish Faux would activate his swipe2wake feature for his kernel app for the Note II. But he hasn't yet.

I'm using Plasma and the way it is set up is there is there is a time limit to how long the TouchWake feature will be active after the screen times out, if its different on Faux or any others I have no clue.
I find it hard to believe that the battery drain for it being always on isn't significant, I'm not saying you're wrong but that its hard to believe. Its constantly leaving a part of your phone awake, no deep sleep, to scan for touches.

I know it's hard to believe, but I suppose the theory relates to idling a car under certain circumstances vs. turning it on and off over and over. There are instances where the former is actually more energy efficient than the latter (there are threads on XDA that discuss this theory, I can't remember where they are). Also, even though the phone isn't in deep sleep, it "idles" at a very low power usage rate. Again, for me, there is no significant drain at all. Last night, before I plugged it in to charge, the phone was at 53% after being "up" for 16 hours.
You can set any physical key to wake the device by editing gpio-keys.kl in /system/use/keylayout and putting WAKE at the end of the line.
This is how the home key wakes the device by default, you can also disable this by removing WAKE from that line.
Example:
key 114 VOLUME_DOWN WAKE
Would make the volume down button wake the phone.
