So you didn't trip Knox? I don't know a lot but I believe there's only a mod to flash via TWRP to unlock the hotspot. Also some ROMs have this same native hotspot hacked already.

I am currently running the Odexed Blue ROM. There are a few others to choose from also that have the hacked hotspot but a few use those Xposed modules but my experience with them wasn't so good. Odexed blue is more of a stock themed ROM with some tweaks.

I'm sure the data speeds being tethered will be the same result it's just nice to have the hotspot hacked so you don't have to find a WiFi tether app, download it and set it up (which sometimes it's a pain in the @$$). Your phone has this preinstalled its just locked. I would rather not have another app in my app drawer personally. Also in the ROM I'm running there is a toggle for the native hotspot app all you have to do is hit it and you can begin tethering (see screenshot) vs. having to navigate to the WiFi tether app every time. No problem that's what xda is for just don't forget to hit the thanks button

Now since this is the native hotspot..is there a way your service provider knows your using their hotspot? I was under the notion that with a tether app, they only see data being used. But they dont know if your just streaming or browsing on your phone regularly. Whereas the native hotspot they can somewhat tell what you are doing.

Do you have Sprint? I've used the native hotspot with no issues. Sprints data is unlimited so even if they can somehow tell (which they can't, data in and out is data in and out) they are still unlimited.

Haha no problem. Just know that when you flash a custom recovery (TWRP) you will trip Knox and your warranty thru Samsung is void and there is no way to reset the Knox counter (yet). This only affects the Samsung warranty and does not affect Sprint's insurance. I've only read some people hitting like 100gb/month and Sprint will possibility tell you to slow down or they will cancel your contract. I've tethered my phone to my smart TV with Netflix a few times and only reached like 40gb so I see making 100gb/month quite hard.
Sent from my SM-N900P using Tapatalk 2
Ooooh yea 100gb would be hard for me as well...I average about 18gb a month, and I thought that was alot. I heard about the knox trip, and that doesn't bother me. So after work I am looking forward to being a note 3 member. Thanks again for your help.

just a bit of info...
check the development section for the wifi hotspot mod.
i had a thread there, and there is another by joshbeach
it is totally possible to get the wifi hotspot without twrp.
as long as you have root you can copy the two files over manually using any root enabled file explorer.
hope that helps.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk
if you dont want to flash the hotspot mod....you can try WIFI TETHER ROUTER (need to be rooted) it works pretty well
I believe somewhere in the development thread there is a way to get hotspot without tripping knox.

But tripping the knox file really doesnt matter if you dont break your device right?
Sent from my GT-N5110 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
Tripping knox is just to let your carrier and the manufacturer know you altered your device's software thus voiding your warranty. You will get a service refusal from both your carrier and manufacturer on either hardware or software. So as long as you know this then go ahead trip knox and have fun. I mean you can now upgrade every 6 months now with a phone trade in or a 1 year upgrade with no phone trade in. They don't even check if you tripped knox when your trading in your phone. So go ahead trip knox we're getting upcoming phones anyway. Out with the old and in with the new.

How would Sprint know if you tripped Knox? I used the one up program and gave them a rooted s3 with a stock ROM as my trade in. The sprint stores around me can barely navigate thru the phones UI let alone would have any idea how to check if knox was tripped. So your saying Sprint can tell and would refuse me service thru their TEP service?
Sent from my SM-N900P using Tapatalk 2
Yes the techs can check. All they have to do is go to download mode and look at the odin bootloader where is say knox 0x0 will be 0x1 letting them know you altered your device

I'm thinking of buying a used one of these off craigslist ... but I'm on tmobile and I'm worried that I won't be able to unlock it without having an AT&T account first .... Can I unlock one of these without having an AT&T account? Most steps I've read talk about downloading an unlocker program from the market ... but without an AT&T sim card in the phone I don't think I'll be able to access the market ...
What do you all think?
You don't have to have cell network to connect to a wifi and log into market. You will need to root it also before those apps will work. Just fyi though. You will NOT get 3g/4g on T-Mobile

So I was trying pre paid stuff like straight talk and Tmobile, you can use the sim cards as it is unlocked from factory but you must root it to edit the APN or the settings to get to data to work. In simple terms you can use it stock outta the box with just voice but u must edit apn settings to get data to work.....and its slow or crap compared to verizon and unlimited data..

I've been using mine on straight talk with their at&t sim card with the $45 month plan. Of course you have to tweak the apn but mine stays connected to hspa+ at all times and it's plenty fast for me. No complaints at all. I've read they have a 2gb data cap before they throttle you but I stay on wifi at home and work so I've yet to break the cap after using the service the past 2 months. For me, straight talk has been awesome.

Yeap play store, search wifi tether by Muller Lemons and Buxton https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.googlecode.android.wifi.tether&hl=en
If you tried this and didn't work, it's because of the settings. Also, make sure with titanium backup you delete TetheringGuard.apk and mobile hotspot, they're both system apps. If you're not using titanium backup the system file for mobile hotspot is wifirouter.apk or something like that.
Download the app and before you ever even try it, get your settings configured. You press the menu button when you're at the apps home screen to get to settings. Set device profile to HTC Rezound CDMA/LTE
Change setup method to Netd NDC Master
Check to Enable Routing fix
Be sure to grant root access. Don't enable wifi encryption until after you've set it up and run some tests without encryption. That way you'll know where the problem lies if you have one, but it should be just fine. I may post another link to something I'm testing now.

Tethering works perfectly for me on ARHD 10.2 (which is what I'm guessing you meant to type). Just go to settings, hit more, mobile network shareing, then go into portable wifi hotspot settings, name your hotspot and PW, then hit the checkbox. I had no problem.
Just curious, when you did your install with AROMA, did you hit AT&T, or international?

No.... Using the "phone" apn yes, at 5GB of usage I get throttled down to .047mbps down.
Then I just switch over to the wap.cingular APN and BAM pulling 6-10mbps down on H+/3G. No throttling here..
This thread is a bit confusing to me.
Are you guys saying AT&T charges extra for tethering?
ATT charges $$$ for a seperate data plan which lets you tether Internet, which is also limited to about 5gb or 3gb, not too sure. If you use tethering on a regular phone (stock rom with bloatware- fresh from the store), they would probably charge you for tethering because of the detection apk they put in there.
The way to bypass this is to use a custom rom, Internet tethering should work on it, maybe you could reflash/ reset the phone (all the settings and whatnot) maybe try a different rom?
Also, I diddnt know you could bypass ATT throttle, could you post all the complete APN settings to do that?
Cheers,
OK, please forgive me for being slow. You only save money if you're tethering from a phone with unlimited data plan, right? If you're on a limited plan, it doesn't matter and AT&T should not charge you extra, right?

If you go over the limit on a limited plan, they charge you extra $$$. I think it is $20 for 1 more GB.
If you are detected tethering on a stock ATT phone, they will probably charge you for tethering plan
If you are on unlimited data, you may lose it (plan) if you are detected tethering (stock phone),
if you go over limit 5GB for 4g LTE phone they will just throttle you.
Undetected tethering/ Custom ROM with removed att protection = only worry about going over the limit
Cheers,

I agree. The only thing Att or carriers look at is the amount of data being used periodically or the mac/ip address. Carriers have the ability to tell the difference from our phone using data or tethering, especially if data patterns changes.

In most places Verizon has the best service. While traveling your less likely to experience drops with Verizon. AT&T also locked their bootloader. I'm not a Verizon fan but if I'm going to have a cell phone I'd like to have service wherever I go.
We are just a few little steps away from a functioning SafeStrap, so you can root, debloat and run custom ROMs. We just cant unlock the bootloader or run custom kernels yet.

Not hating on SS because it's a valuable tool for those who can't do it other ways. But you certainly are not debloating anything by leaving a full stock install in a "safe partition" and then running your choice of other ROMs.

It's just like Verizon to lock the bootloader! What ever happened to having freedom?!? I'm waiting for my contract to end and I'm leaving Verizon. The only good thing I can see for them is this edge program but everyone is getting it so why stay?

Agreed. I just switched to Verizon from Sprint and fortunately I'm on MDK but I'm not down with these policies going forward. For the locations I spend 99.9 percent of my time in, T mobile has nearly equal coverage and fewer dropped calls in my area. I'll be migrating to T mobile at the end of my contract on in the event I hose my phone and can't stomach being on ME7.

Not hating on SS because it's a valuable tool for those who can't do it other ways. But you certainly are not debloating anything by leaving a full stock install in a "safe partition" and then running your choice of other ROMs.

True, but with root can't you pretty significantly debloat the "safe" partition?

I will never talk bad about guys like Hashcode! Dudes like this make it possible to truly have control of your phone! What gets me is so many others just abandoned ship and moved on. I can't wait for my S4 to be good again

I wish I never signed up with Verizon. After my two years I'm going back to tmobile they got unlimited data plan and all cheap.

Locking phones down is the norm now...I chose carrier by coverage and signal. If im lucky to have a phone I can root and customize..I consider tht an added plus

I don't know about "the norm." But I do agree that coverage and signal are most important and fortunately VZW isn't the only game in town with decent coverage. However, I've been modding phones since 11/2007 and it's something I enjoy. I'll be dammed if I stick with a carrier who aims to prevent me from enjoying one of my hobbies.

With root you can debloat the stock install and move data apps to system to save previous data space.
But im unsure as to how much you can do to your safe partition with SS because it's intended to be your safety net when you screw up.

I wasnt talking bad. If you think I was you need your head examined. I personally don't want to use it but I feel it's an extremely valuable tool for many.
I only won't use it because I don't want or need a safety net. Id rather use that space myself. And since I am on mdk I have that option.

I hate the lock too
I love my S4 personally, but that's because I got it early when the Loki exploit worked. I don't like Verizon, though, but I'm on a plan with my parents still so I can't complain since I'm not paying. I plan on switching to T-Mobile and staying off-contract after I leave my parents' plan.
It is my opinion that the locked bootloaders showing up amongst carriers is a result of people bricking their phones and returning them for warranty replacement. I think the locked bootloaders make that much more difficult to do on accident. It is not difficult to see that carriers monitor XDA and see what people do.
I AGREE...
