Updated to the note 3 about a month ago. The volume rockers used to control the ring volume which is what I want. They now only control notification volume.
Yes I know, pressing the button opens up the slider and I can maintain all the volumes from there.
I want to control ringer volume with the side volume buttons.
Anyone have any idea how this got changed or how I can revert back?
So no one knows how to change the settings for the side volume rockers? Am I missing a simple solution?
Are you running a live wallpaper? There are a few out there that make the device think it's playing some type of media, therefore, only trigger the media volume when adjusting the volume. If this isn't the case I'm not sure why your device is stuck on pulling up the notification volume instead of the ringer volume.

Honestly have no clue...maybe a bit more info will help....what rom are u running? Any mods you may have flashed? Have you thought about flashing a stock rooted rom? Just throwing out some suggestions. ..I haven't ever seen or heard of this but that's what I would do if it happened to me.
Good luck...it sounds very Irritating.

Thanks for the heads up on the live wallpaper. I never run them though. This Note is completely stock and unrooted. It's killing me not to root it. I have been waiting hoping for a work around on tripping the knox counter. In the meantime, this little glitch is driving me nuts. Thanks for the suggestions.
Start uninstalling apps until you figure it out. If that doesn't work then think about a factory reset.

Hi everybody,
I've disagreements with function of volume button in "normal mode".. because ring volume is absolutely useless for me.. I would like control media volume instead of ring volume in "normal mode".. Does anyone know how I can do that?
Thank you very much
PS: sorry for my EN
really nobody knows?
When media are being played, the volume keys adjust media volume,
so why would anyone need to adjust media volume without playing any already?

I'm browsing on internet and I want click on some video. But I remember in last time I was listening to music very loudly and I don't want loud video now.. the easiest way is click on video and after that pressing "-" volume button.. but phone takes time to know he is in "media mode", and begins reducing ring volume.. after that I want back my level of ring volume to max, but phone already increasing media volume => I am very angry!!
the same in games etc etc...
I don't want changing ring volume 10x a day (knowingly or UNINTENTIONALLY too) I don't need change it ever. I can recuce it in Settings, or completely in lock screen...

My I9100 is running the stock 4.0.3 ICS update that was installed via Kies. Everything I've read says that ICS links the ringer and notification volumes, but this has not been my experience.
My volume rocker only changes the ringer volume. I verified this by installing Persist Volume Control and watching as only the ringer volume changes.
Does anyone know what's wrong? This behavior seems different from everyone elses'.
Thanks!

As I always want to control the volume levels of each media type separately, I am happy that the ringer and notification volume level are not linked.
But I am using Elixir Widget app from the Play store to change the volume levels and save my volume profile(s).
Usually, I do not change the volume level by the volume key.

Does it matter? Is this not core functionality that should be found in all flavors of ICS? No matter how bastardized by the OEM?
Either way, in the Google link one person does mention their SGS2.
Is my research wrong and are these indeed not supposed to be linked?
So... nobody knows?

exactly the same problem. They're obviously supposed to be linked because every single google result except this one is ICS users trying to separate the link complaining they want that feature back
Attached a screenie of my offical O2 kies-updated ICS 4.0.3 volume screen, showing they're not linked...
constantly missing texts because i just use the volume rocker to turn up my phone forgetting it doesnt turn up notifications like Gingerbread used to

Glad I'm not alone... but maybe us 2 are?
GB I have the option to link or keep separate.
I personally prefer separate control over these settings.
Why would you wish to permanently link them?
Could you not simply just set these values where you wish them individually and be satisfied?

How hard is it to turn one or both up or down. Custom settings are what makes a phone individual.Personally i like the idea they are not linked. My ringer can be turn full on or off and my notifications to just a whisper...Perfect.

If I want my ringer to be quiet, I want my notifications to also be quiet. I should be able to do this via the volume rocker, like I can on my One X, and used to be able to do prior to my I9100's ICS update.

It's quite a nuisance if I want them to be adjusted concurrently.
I've read that ICS is supposed to force (or give the option of) linking, which is the point of my thread. Is this only the case for every phone except the I9100?

Its not a custom setting, this is supposed to be stock ICS, i certainly wouldnt have chose to have this crap feature.
It now takes 4 presses to get to the menu every time you wander into a quiet situation, and then another 4 when you leave it (not including actually moving the volume sliders).
I personally find that very annoying when there's a volume control on the side of my phone.
Use CM9. Has ability to link ringtone & notification volumes.
Is there a way to implement this on stock Samsung ICS (Touchwiz)? Tried quick settings but the option is greyed out.
Thanks

I've had this issue too. Thought the volume buttons should control both ringer and notifications but they didnt. Im running Caulkin's ICS rom too so that may have something to do with it. Regardless, after MUCH searching and downloading of apps that I thought would do this but they didn't, I finally found an app that did this for me! Quick Settings by Halfbit - note that there are two apps by different developers called the same thing. I didn't try the other one but this one worked.
Strange though, the selection to link the notification and ringer volumes is checked, but grayed out. So guess you have to uninstall the app to change this configuration..

Apparently not. Stock/ota ics for droid4 also removes the checkbox to allow you to link the volumes if you want to. I want to link them as well so when i turn it down at a meeting, i don't get blown out of my chair when i get a text.
Setting everything once and forgetting it doesn't work for a lot of people. For me, i need it quiet at work, then loud while not at work so i can hear ringer/sms sounds over road noise/music while driving, or if i leave my phone upstairs at home. I use moto's smart actions to handle the volume changing automatically (think of it as a gimped version of tasker) but now that ringtone and notification vol are no longer linkable, and smart actions can't control notification volume, i consider it to be broken. It turns down ringer vol just fine, but notifications are still crazy loud. Very annoying. Can't wait for cm9 (or even 10) for the droid4!
is there a setting page for microphone on Amaze?
the microphone works for recording a video, not working when phone call, record a voice clip or voxer. actually on voxer, it is really low.
do I have a defective phone or some setting is not right.
stock rom, just updated to ICS, didn't really try before updates, just got the phone.

Pretty much the only way I know to adjust volume for phone calls is with the rocker button on the side. So you need to be like on a call then press the rocker button and it should adjust the volume for phone calls. As far as voxer I've never used that app but know the concept maybe there's a volume setting within the app. But if you continue with these issues maybe try a factory reset and reinstall everything, or maybe you do have a defective phone.

Is there a way to make the ringer and notification volumes to be linked together so they both change to when I use my volume buttons? The buttons only change the ringer volume and I want it to change both ringer and notification volumes together.
I tried Quick Settings from the Play store which I have used on other phones to "link" the volumes. But it doesn't do that on my SGS3. I have tried a couple other apps that say they do that, but again they don't link the volumes together on my SGS3. Anybody know how to do this?
Having trouble with AudioGuru (paid). It doesn't seem to effect the volume either. Alert function not adjusting the alert.
More details.
With the Alert Notification sound set in GoSMS, the phone Alert Notification sound is different. AudioGuru only shows the Phone Alert Notification sound not the GoSMS Alert Notification sound. When muting the AudioGuru 'Alert' only the Phone Alert Notification sounds is muted. The GoSMS Alert Notification sound is not effected thus not muted etc..
I hope we find a fix to this. I'll be checking back but I too would like both these sounds to be at the same level. Thinking I had my phone on silent and then getting slammed with a notifcation ring is not what I intended.

I will be watching this thread too. I have tried many apps on the market that said it could link ringer and notification sounds, but none of them worked. Hopefully there is a workaround for this. When I turn my volume all the way down, I assume it will make no noise. Then I had my email sound go off at 3AM when I was sleeping. Not what I wanted at all. Many phones have this option in the sound settings, so I don't see why Samsung couldn't have put that in here.

^^^ This.
I've spent the last day un-TouchWiz'ing the phone as much as possible (replacing apps with AOSP ones, launcher with Trebuchet, etc) but this volume thing is driving me batty.
I have been able to get the ringer and officiating sounds to "link" using the Go Switch widget. It works all the time when you open the widget and check the box to link the two and adjust the volume while the widget is open but Ive also got it working otherwise but this is spotty.
Yes! i would love to have the 2 linked. When I first got the phone I couldnt figure out why the ringer was so low and the Notifications were so loud.
There seems to only be 7 steps for volume on the S3. I've found that the lowest setting for notifications is still quite loud in a quiet setting. Is there anyway I can make it quieter without resorting to using quieter notification sounds?
I'm coming from a Droid 3 and the lowest setting was perfect, it was just loud enough for me to hear at my desk without it bothering others.
Now I have to keep my S3 on vibrate at work, and it's annoying for me because I never seem to hear/feel the vibration.

Do you mean Volume Control + by Coffeebreak Apps? (sorry can't post links yet) I tried that but it has the same limitations as the stock settings, just 7 predefined steps.
Or do you mean Volume+ (Volume Boost) by Meltus? I don't see how that app would help but I guess I'll try it.
Thanks.
Update: I installed Volume+ from androidaudiohacks dot com. I changed the levels to the lowest setting on everything and it made no difference to the notification volume :-\

I've tried a couple dozen different apps but they all seem to be tied directly to the same system settings that can't make it any quieter. If you happen to know of a specific one that might I would love to hear it (if you have the time that is, I'm not trying to inconvenience you)
There is a setting in build.prop. you can set it up to 20. Can't remember its name tho

Hmm really? It lowered the volume of your notification sounds? My hearing is average, it's just that it didn't actually lower the sound for me. Perhaps I did something wrong? I'll try again later tonight and see if that is the case.
I'm also looking for a quieter volume setting. I'm surprised how loud the ringtone and notifications are at the quietest setting.
I suppose rooting and getting a custom rom might be the way to achieve this but having already bricked one S3 I'm a bit wary about diving right back into the pool! But if someone happens to find a ROM that gives more volume control let me know!
Volume Rocker?
Are you turning the notification volume down with the volume rocker? I just realized that the notification volume does not match the ringer volume as you adjust it with the volume rocker. On my Evo 4G I could check a box that made them adjust up and down at the same time. On the GS3 I have to press the volume rocker then press the settings button that is visible in the ringer volume pop up. From there I can adjust the notification volume independantly.
It does however mute the notifications when the ringer is set to vibrate or mute.
Can someone build that into a ROM? Where the notification and ringer volume go up and down together?

No I use a widget (Widgetsoid) that lets me change the two independently. If I wanted to I could check the box at the top (see attached screenshot) and then the volume rocker would adjust both at once.
I never had any luck getting Volume+ to alter the volume of my notifications.

Are you mistaking the notification level for system level? System sounds kill my ears, and I actually have to adjust it through Settings > Sound > Volume. Looks like Widgetsoid might be an easier method, instead of going through settings every time. Also, I set a schedule in the Timeriffic app, so that it's ever too loud for me anymore.

Well, I thought I made some progress on this.
As you can see from the attachment, I did get there to be more steps. I had to make some adjustments to framework.jar to get it to change.
BUT, it doesn't do much good.
For the ringer volume steps 9-17 are silent. 8 is the loudest. 18 is the quietest..
For the notification volume, step 1 is still just as loud as before, and steps 8-15 are silent, so that was completely pointless. I'll edit the framework to have ringer and notifications be 30 to see if that does anything. It's really a crapshoot of what I'm editing, there are no descriptions just hex characters.
