[Q] Removing Custom Recovery? - LG Optimus L9 P760, P765, P768, P769

Hey everyone,
I'm trying to update my phone with the latest T-mobile OTA update (I'm on v20F and I think the update is v20H), but every time I try to install it I get a dead android screen and my phone restarts with no update. I think this is because of the custom recovery that I have installed. How do I remove the custom recovery so that I can install the update? Is there away to update without removing custom recovery (and without losing all of my data)?
I'm using Voodoo root keeper so that I can keep root after the update.
Thanks!

Bump, I'm still unable to update, and I'd like to!

You can't get the update because you have deleted apps from the system.

So I just have to reinstall the bloatware apps and then I'll be able to update?

Yes just re-install the bloatware and that should do the trick.
But i would recommend Kuma's themed Stock ROM for locked bootloaders.
It's using the latest update.

You can't install OTAs if system has been modified, is to say, if you have root access, you won't be able to install the OTA.
A way to install the latest version of the stock Rom is to use the the LG update tool for PC. So, you don't lose your data and system's modifications don't mind.

[Q] Need to unroot for ICS OTA?

I know there must be mentioning somewhere, but I couldn't find it...
Please forgive me for asking the obvious.
I have Razr Maxx with stock rom and have only rooted.
Should I unroot the device before receiving the ICS OTA?
Many thanks for your kind help!
If you just installed root there's no problem but if you removed any system app then you'll need to flash stock 2.3.6

If you installed bootstrap, you'll also need to remove that. You can't upgrade with bootstrap installed or root. I spent about 10 hours today figuring out that CWM was preventing the OTA from installing properly.
Thanks pedrotorresfilho and brgr,
Thanks!
I haven't deleted any system app nor have installed CWM.
All I have done is install Titanium back up, Wi-Fi Tether and Voodoo OTA RootKeeper.
I guess I am okay.
I will look at these SU required apps if anything goes wrong...
BTW, I am still waiting for the OTA...
Many thanks!!
hi
With 651.167.20.XT910.Retail.en.EU can get ICS directly from Motorola.Or I have to go to stock
thanks

The OTA ICS update is already live, but you cannot update if your phone is rooted.
Having root doesn't affect the download of the OTA update. You can wait for it to notify you, or you can go to Settings -> Device Info -> System Updates to start the download. Having root, you can save the update .zip and .crc files from /cache and put them on your SD Card which is useful for some update methods.
Root and things you can do with root affect whether the update works or not. Installing Busybox in /system/bin, installing bootstrap or safestrap, installing a custom recovery, and who knows what else can prevent the update from completing properly. The guides often recommend wiping the phone with Matt's Droid Razr Utility 1.6 (maybe modified) or 1.7.

[Q] Does Lollipop update break root

I don't want to lose root on my phone. Just want to make sure that I can update to the lollipop update that was released 4/13/15 without losing root. Thanks!

idk but I wasn't able to update the OTA
You can re-root using a new method, but I think they patched Stumproot. Also, the "bump" process to made thinks like TWRP and custom roms loadable was also broken, though you can get around that by flashing an older version aboot image, somehow.
If you have made any changes to system files, like you would want root for, you cannot OTA successfully. You can use the Verizon Software Update Tool though, or the new .kdz file. The Update tool replaces your whole phone image though, so no trace of root will be left afterwards.
But, then you can re-root.

The only reason I have/need root access is to bypass the hotspot charges. So I could do the OTA, which would unroot my phone and then reroot using what? And where is a good place to find the files and such?

Maybe this isn't the answer that you're looking for, but the easiest way to upgrade from rooted and with custom recovery on any release is to flash JasmineROM v7.0 and then the latest SuperSU.zip. JasmineROM v7.0 itself, without the separate mods or debloat zips, is 100% stock official release OTA 23C_01, besides the necessary partitions in order to keep your working custom recovery with it.
You can do the LG Backup from the settings menu for everything, then restore it under JasmineROM to keep everything that's possible.

Well, it might be due to the root-script.

Unrooted my Xperia Z2 but still can't update via OTA.

So.. The Android 5.1.1 version is here and I've unrooted my phone for the update, but it still shows "Could not verify." Are there any files that cause the verifying process to know that I had rooted my device? If yes, can I delete it or what? Or are there any other ways to update without flashing a ftf file? (1. Because that ftf file is very big and my Internet speed couldn't afford it. 2. Because I don't want to wipe my apps and data) Any help would be appreciated!
@OP, If I understand right, it's the custom recovery you might have that prevents the OTA update from completing successfully. Which, in a way, is a good thing.
Step 1: reroot your phone while you still can.
Step 2: download any of a number of flashable, pre-rooted 5.1.1 ROMs with recovery (*.zip) floating around now and flash it with your current recovery, wiping only cache and Dalvik upon exit. This is what I've done to keep all my date and settings and still be rooted and have recovery on 5.1.1.

After I flash this, can my phone update OTA or the same problem will happen?
As far as we know, custom recoveries will always prevent OTA updates to our Xperia devices. Why are OTA updates seemingly so important to you? With your custom recovery installed, you can always simply flash the new update when it becomes available; often before the OTA update is released.

Can you give me a link for the official ROM? Thanks!
Can I use the AOSPA ROM? Does it need to unlock my bootloader to flash it?
Some consideration about this thread.
1) Not never the OTA updade overwrite the ROOT, example I passed from .627 to .28 through OTA update without lose the root and recovery. This depend of kind of update.
2) I think that to install a pre-rooted rom is not a good thing, because the baseband is almost always different an this can create issue related the WI-fi and carrier signal (3G, 4G).
3) I always installed the root, recovery and mod as well. But now I have understand that is not really necessary to install this. At least the stock Z2 have a good/beautiful OS and good hardware and there is no need to change some colors or icons to improve it.
I'm boring to flash and restore my data every new firmware or new mod. (now a new firmware is already certified and will be ready soon).
Maybe I will think to change the room when my phone will be obsolete

Totally understand, thankyou, so I just flash the original ROM from AOSPA and without root is enough right?

If you do not have an unlocked bootloader, you cannot flash anything but a pre-rooted stock 5.1.1 ROM with recovery. There are several types available in the General Z2 column.

I have a crazy thought flashed across my mind haha, that file that I downloaded via OTA SYSTEM UPDATE is still there, can I make it as a zip file and flash it?

Why would you do that? You wouldn't have root and you wouldn't have a recovery; you'd be stuck, unable to root and install a recovery. Do what I said and you'll be fine.

Can you help me to find one? That doesn't need to unlock bootloader to flash.

Installing updates once rooted

Where should I grab updates from and how to install when rooted?
OTA says device is modified in an unathorised way.
Thanks

You can find firmware on updato.com. I've never seen Samsung post an OTA that you could flash. I haven't had to do this yet, Samsung is very slow to update firmware, but what is plan to do is back up the data partition with twrp. Then flash the new firmware with odin, reinstall twrp. Then root and restore the data partition with twrp. This all assumes the available twrp will be compatible with the new firmware, which may not be true since the new firmware hopefully will be oreo. But you get the idea, it's not going to be as easy as just flashing an OTA.
