[Q] No Volume Up Button - What Issues Will I Have? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I have been reading up a lot about rooting and loading a customer recovery and looking at putting a 4.4 CM11 ROM on my S3 I9305.
What I haven't been able to determine is if I can do this without the volume up button at all. My volume up button doesn't work (this is a hardware issue) and I know that to do some things like enter download mode/recovery etc. requires pressing of the volume up button.
As my volume up button doesn't work is there some way I can do all of the above without it? Maybe through software running on a PC, or ADB etc?
Currently I'm running stock unrooted 4.1.2 and haven't done anything to my phone yet
Thanks.

Without vol up u cannot enter recovert ... theres always adb and apps to help u but if u get stuck in bootloop or even at boot u are in problems because u will not be able to boot to recovery
And even if u enter in download mode u still need vol up to confirm choyce ... sorry mate i dont like give bad news

Thanks Ver3go, but technically there is software/methods to be able to do it without having to use the volume up button?

That is only if your phone switches on to launcher completely.
If you get stuck in boot loop or trouble like that..........theres no escape :fingers-crossed:

Yes if you have a rom with advanced power menu .
Bootloop way out would be buy USB Recovery Jig boot to download mode and flash stock rom .

Hmm, ok thanks for the info. I think I might take a look at giving it a shot and just hope I don't get into boot loop!!

Just in case anyone finds this useful for future reference I ended up not having any problem with doing this with adb and installing TWRP as my recovery. Once that was done it's been pretty simple, have flashed multiple different Roms with no issues as long as you have root then getting into recovery is a piece of cake

Only one out of two tablets can enter recovery mode?

Hi guys,
So I bought myself 2x ACHO C908 tablets during my stay in HongKong.
However, only one of them are able to enter recovery mode by holding down Volume- and the poweron button at the same time.
The tablet not being able to proceed just stucks at the first logo of the boot, namely "ACHO".
So my question is if you think this is software or hardware related?
The reason I want to enter recovery mode is because I want to do a factory reset, the tablet not being able to enter recovery mode gives me an error on boot saying I need to do a default settings reset.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

I would say it depends on the software
Probably there was a error while flashing the recovery image

Sry for my late answer i was away a while
jap u could flash your stock rom via odin or adb just search in the xda forums how this works
if i remmber right in odin there is a optin wich lets u flash only the stock recovery
(you migh also flash a custom recovery like cmw if its available for u tablet)

I can't use "Odin" because I'm not able to boot into Android? So I can't use it?
And I can't use "ADB" either, because I can't boot into Android so I can't turn on "USB Debugging".
Any other guesses? :/
Thanks

[Q] P769 Booting Woes

I recently changed my framework-res.apk and now I'm stuck at the boot animation. I don't want to completely reset my device with a kdz. I've looked around and haven't found much about recovery. I have the original apk file, but I just need a way to push it. Anyone have a way?

Do you have cwm installed ? If not you can try: phone powered down , hold vol+ home + power, should bring up message saying something about service center..
Code:
adb shell
su
mount -o rw, remount /system
rm /system/framework/framework-res.apk
exit
adb push /path-to/orginal/framework-res.apk /system/framework
adb reboot
Thanks for the reply. I didn't read about CWM before this happened, otherwise this would be easy. I've held down every button combination at boot that I can think of and get nothing like that. When holding vol- + home + power I get an Android and a progress bar that causes the phone to reboot after no more than 10 seconds. Nothing shows up in the device manager during that time either.

I can get into fastboot through omap4boot. If I can get a cwm recovery img for my device I should be able to fix it.

fastboot + cwm recovery only works if you've unlocked bootloader
easiest way to restore your phone now is by s/w mode ,either lg tool or offline method
or "vol+ and home and power" and the rest from 2nd post in this thread

I had cwm before i unlocked boot loader...install with 9 installer.apk and choose test version (stable version won't boot)..plus if you have a CWM backup( they r also in the forums as well) adb restore is 50 times faster than using LG Update tool.

there are two types of cwm recovery, one uses 2nd boot and other recovery partition , if bootloader is locked and phone won't boot you can't use neither and cwm backups are useless

As a young developer I HIGHLY recommend becoming very familiar with ADB, it saved a BUNCH of times on my Galaxy S...its great if you can get the hang of it, all commands are the same for all devices, the help section is sort of sketchy, but with a lot of trial and error, I picked it up nicely

The best thing to do (if you haven't done so already) is to flash the kdz (thanks cmahendra and everyone else for y'all hard work) and start from scratch. Second, install artas182x (thanks Artas!) cwm and make a backup. I had to learn the hard way too

To the OP i am currently in the same boat as far as not being able to boot and not being able to access adb. Have you figured anything out or are you still stuck? Before chimes in I do have CWM( the lights flash on reboot) but when i press the -vol button the phone does nothing.
Try connecting in s/w upgrade mode ( holding vol + while inserting usb to phone) it should load some drivers and you should be able to connect in adb. If not connect in every mode possible, to load any drivers(they will still load even though your phone isn't showing any signs of life as long as you have the installed LG drivers previously)

As far as I'm aware, there are no hardware keys to get you to recovery.
1)*Boot into LG G3 Recovery Mode Using*HARDWARE BUTTONS
This method is a fail-proof method that’ll always work for you, unless you’ve broken your device’s*hardware keys. In such a case you’d be left with only the other two software based methods.
IMPORTANT NOTE:*Do not try to reboot into recovery mode unless you’ve installed a custom recovery like TWRP / CWM on your LG G3, otherwise you might end-up hard resetting your phone.
Power off your device and wait for 5-10 seconds until the device is fully switched off.Press and hold *‘Volume Down*+ Power’ buttons*together and release them as soon as you see the LG*logo on your phone’s screen. Now immediately press and hold the*‘Volume Down + Power’*buttons again until you see the*‘Hard reset screen’Press power button once, and then again to confirm hard reset. If you have a custom recovery installed, your phone won’t hard reset and will boot into recovery mode.Your phone will boot into recovery mode.*Use Volume buttons to navigate Up and Down between options and use Power button to select an option in recovery (if in case it’s not touch supported)

I am not sure the difference between a soft or hard brick. But currently my G3 will not go past the LG screen. I can use the hardware keys to get to stock recovery and when i do factory reset it goes dark and the LED's blink but nothing happens. Is this hard bricked? Also, know a way to get to recovery now?

What to do in case of bootloop

Hi. So I have a noobish question
This may sound very stupid, but this is actually the first time I've owned a phone with non-removable battery, so I just wanted to know what would I do if I ever got stuck in a bootloop? With my previous device, I could just remove the battery and put it back in then boot into recovery. Obviously can't do that now. So how do I turn the phone off, or enter recovery?
Anyone?
You can enter the recovery whenever you want by pressing the on/off button and the down volume button for about 10 seconds. When the Oneplus logo is on the screen release the on/off button but keep the down volume button pressed.
It works, I had a bootloop and fixed it by flashing the rom via twrp

Sorry, I got a little confused
Just to be clear, here's what I understood from what you said - Consider I turn my phone on and its stuck in a bootloop. What do I do then? Hold the power and vol down buttons? That will boot the recovery, even while the device is stuck in bootloop with the oneplus logo continuously showing?
Did I get it right?

I'm sorry I'm not English I may be unclear.
But yes, when you got the logo continuously showing, press the two buttons I said and it will reboot the phone, but you have to release only the on/off button when the oneplus logo will appear right after the beginning of the reboot. If you keep pressing the down volume button it will go to recovery
Have you got a oneplus x already ? You can try it right now, when your phone is awake. It's the same method as in a bootloop.

So I tried what you said, didn't exactly work When the phone was awake, did power+vol down. That just caused it to take a screenshot.
However, when I held down just the power button, the phone turned off. Then I had to turn it on by holding the power button. I did the same thing (holding down power button) while the phone was booting, it worked even then, and the phone again turned off.
So at least I can get into recovery now in case of bootloop. I just need to hold the power button till phone turns off, then boot into recovery using power+vol down combination.
Anyways, thanks for the help

Yesterday, I got my OPX and installed TWRP 2.8.7.0 and superSU. AFter using the phone all day, I rebooted and it is now saying in TWRP "no operating system".
I tried to flash the 2.1 full ROM and I get an error in both TWRP or in Stock recovery.

You can try a different twrp. There's 2 builds for our device. One is from the twrp thread itself, the other is available in the blu_spark kernel thread.

Hi thank you for your return, but your link doesn't work!
For fastboot, unfortunately I can't access it because the phone restarts automatically so it doesn't work with on and volume down buttons and it doesn't work either with a computer.... Any other advise :'(

I think u r doing it wrong, if u press power and vol down it ll go to recovery mode which is probably corrupted now in your case... Thats y phone gets restarted again and again.
Try this... Swt of ur phone completly hold the volume up button and power button... Press vol up first and while holding it press power buttom.. This ll take u to fastboot screen...
For the link my bad... Use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=20236 go to this page and download this recovey

Letv One Pro X800 - No fastboot

If I press power + volume down all I get is a picture of a penguin, which stays there until the phone runs out of battery.
Does anyone know how I fix this?

This is normal I don't think you can do anything with that, what do you actually want to achieve?
Same here. When I try to install TWRP all I get is the tux penguin. Trying to root the x800.

I was trying to root the phone and get a new ROM but I've since managed to do both.
I wrote a very quick guide in another thread, for anyone else experiencing the same problem.

The guide in the other thread didn't exactly tell you how to get around the tux penguin issue.

Yes it does. I mentioned the penguin specifically:
Seeing the penguin is normal. I have managed to fix the issues I have and I am running a custom ROM by Cuoco92, all thanks to the help I got from @simidisc.
I will assume that you have installed all appropriate USB drivers.
1. Visit http://bit.ly/1Q6irPH and download SEZIONE FIRMWARE and SEZIONE RECOVERY. Don't worry about this being in Italian - I don't speak Italian and managed no problem.
2. Copy the zip file from Sezione Firmware to your phone.
3. Unzip the the recovery file on your computer and connect your phone to your computer.
4. After unzipping TWRP, run "Install Over Fastboot".
5. Your phone will reboot and you will see THE PENGUIN. Just press VOLUME UP + POWER at the same time and your phone will reboot to TWRP.
6. You should now be able to flash the ROM, making sure to wipe cache, dalvik etc.

Did you follow the steps above? When you see the Penguin, did you press VOL UP + POWER?
If so, what happened? This should boot to TWRP.
I did but nothing happen

Sorry, but I don't know what to do now.
Have you been on http://www.letv.re/? It is a forum dedicated to Letv phones and someone there might have a solution.
TWRP Fastboot
I am having the same problem.
The penguin comes on then no matter what I do, it either just reboots (if I keep holding power down) and continues to do this for ever, or boots into the LeEco recovery, if I press volume up and power, or just boots into EUI rom if I do nothing.
Any suggestions?
Phone is not rooted.
