[Q] [mbk72_wet_jb3][MT6572][Solved] Customize Stock ROM with kitchen problem - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Solution
Turns out that the CWM Recovery Backup was very helpful for the kitchen and it worked, now I can make a custom ROM for MT6572 mbk72_wet_jb3 Devices, I will soon post a tutorial of how I did all of it, as soon as I finish a Custom ROM.
I hope this can make someone happy soon. :victory:
History:
Hi everyone, I have some questions about the creation of an update.zip with a customized SYSTEM from the stock ROM of my device.
My problem is that everything work as it should be, I can do an update.zip to flash only boot.img and it works and an update.zip to delete packages or add packages and it also works.
But when I want to format my system partition to write all the files from my kitchen, it does not boot at all, I can´t even do a logcat... I´ve tried to do an update.zip without any modifications and still nothing.
Any suggestions??
This is the last thing that I want to do before doing a tutorial on how to Root, Flash Recovery, and install Custom Roms on Mediatek 6572 Device: mbk72_wet_jb3
Update: I´ve tried to just copy the system files without the updater-script do a format, and do the format manually before running the update, and it goes into bootloop but I can see the logcat saying it´s missing a lot of libraries, but all of them are actually there in the system/lib folder, and I looked at the permissions and where all correct..

Hello,
Gr8 stuff , did You manage to finish this tutorial , will make me verry happy.
While playing around with custom roms and android kitchen to better understand Android , i am stuck at stock system recovery on a Korean clone device. (mtk6572 device)
I can flash the device , and i have no /system partition , just enough to boot and load recovery. (preloader.bin , uboot.bin , boot.img and recovery.img backed up from stock and flashed)
I need to flash the system.img and load android on the device , but i do not have the system.img file i just have the /system folder extracted from it before it died and trying to create a .zip file and flash it using the stock recovery.
When trying to apply any update i always get
Install /sdcard
Installation aborted
or
install /sdcard
Error: Invalid OTA package, missing scatter
Installation aborted.
I tried all different stuff i though about , adding scatter file, extracting/editing the zip files (updater-script/update-script) replace the update-binaries with the ones for my phone , the problem is all the attempt results are the Installation aborted , with no errors or hints on what is going on , and read the posts about recovery.log (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246) but logs are not generated in this stock recovery and no options to show them or send them to /sdcard.
I am using the kitchen provided by dsixda.
P.S: thanks alot for this kitchen it just makes life alooooot easier and u can actually learn the process with great information's.
The second error i get ( Invalid OTA ...) makes me thing the update-binaries are correct and its being executed , so i used the kitchen to add the scatter file for my device , sign the package and upload it , but then the wierd thing is i get the first error again , confusing cz i do not know where and how to trace my problem , tried to understand how the updater-script is made and try to display some info in it just to see if its executed but no luck , just the installation aborted message!!!
Can any one point me on to a tutorial explaining what exactly happens when you are in system recovery , and try to apply update from sdcard and choose the update?
Is there any difference between how these updates are executed in different devices/roms/android versions ?
Sorry for making this post to long ( i feel i am sending an email lol) , just needed to be clear and give as many info as i got to help solve this issue.
Thanks in advance.
Mike

Hi ,
did you tried mtkdroid tools?
below is copied from a link , but you know new users cannot post urls.
1. Connect your phone and run downloaded MTKDroidTools.exe. After few seconds your phone info should be displayed.
2. Go to "Root, Backup, Recovery" tab. Backup button is now disabled. Click the "Root" button on the bottom to get root access to your phone.
3. You will receive a pop-up message requesting your approval for root access. You may also receive a confirmation on phone screen. The pop-up message may differ if your phone is not already rooted.
4. Now, the Backup button and other disabled buttons should be enabled.
5. You may select "Backup userdata and cache" if you want to backup your user data and settings. Click Backup button. The process will start. You can select "Yes" for "Packing backup?" question during process if you want to compress backup into a zip file.
6. When the backup is complete, go to your MTKDroidTools folder and open backups. You will find the compressed backup zip file and uncompressed files there. You can use SP Flash tool to restore your ROM when needed.

im waiting for that thx

I see that I´ve got some more people interested in this, I will then finish the tutorial, right now I don´t have the device because it´s been used on my job, I needed to modify all the apps so I had to do all of this to modify everything that I could without breaking the phone, with the kitchen I was able to remove all the bloat software and also change the initial software like the launcher, phone app, gallery, etc to custom ones.
As soon as I get more devices I will finish the tutorial, because I will have more to unlock and change the apps.
Greetings!

[Q] MTK6573 custom recovery and backups / Stock Boot, Recovery + Scatter included

Phone is a Star X19i
Now I'm looking at getting a system to allow me to back up the rom and re-flash if needed.
Post 4 has attachments of my boot, recovery and scatter files.
Old issue: (Solved)
Stupid thing I did I renamed the mtklockscreen.odex to mtklockscreen.odex1 just as a test in a half asleep phase to see if I would get the stock lockscreen loading.
Suffice to say the phone no longer boots.
Really don't think I can get into ADB and rename the file to get the phone booting again unless anyone knows a way.
Android was 2.3.6 and I asked the seller if it was possible to get the rom incase anything like happened which they didn't.
So anyone have any ideas?
I have attached the stock recovery and boot images made with cat and a scatter file I made to post 4.
As I have no idea about modifying these for hard root can anyone take a look?
I don't know the specifics of the phone, but if you can go into recovery mode maybe you can get adb working, or use a flashable zip to rename the file by installing it from recovery (just need to edit the zips' updater script)

I got into built in Factory mode and can see the file I renamed through ADB and android commander but cannot rename it back due to not having hard root access.
I also have a copy of the boot and recovery partitions 5 and 6 respectively I made in the adb shell yesterday as I was half looking at getting hard root access.
ren mtklockscreen.odex1 mtklockscreen.odex
ren: permission denied
I read you can do a custom recovery with root using SP Tools still so can anyone help me do this?
I know about system root etc and stuff and have flashed roms before on other tablets and have been a PC I.T tech (wouldn't think it due to the stupid mistake) but this recovery and scatter files etc is kinda new to me.
I have a scatter file now I just made if anyone is interested in helping me.
Yes I have a MTK6573 but the scatter file came from the MT6516 Rom Studio which I read works the same for the 6573.
Attached is also my stock boot and recovery partitions I made with cat yesterday if there usable to anyone to help.
Well I got it working and fixed.
I had to go into adb shell and su and mount the file system as writable, as I have used linux before I didn't know about android and what needed to be done and permission locks etc.
The stock boot, recovery and scatter files will remain on this thread if anyone wants to help create or find a recovery which can allow me to create backups and flash custom roms.
I may be able to provide a dump of android 2.3.6 for those that want it once I'm provided with a backup solution as I have read a few people wanting this updated android rom.
This got too close to what I would like liked with bricking this phone.
And I'm not comfortable unless I have a rom backup of this.
Rooting Advice: For anyone with a MTK6573 on Android 2.3.6 trying to root but having issues with super one click make sure you only turn on USB debugging after Android has loaded and just before you plug the usb cable in to run super one click.
I have seen a few thread and posters here about not being able to root the phone and this is the cause that debug needs to be switched on right before you connect and try to root.
Original seller has agreed to send the firmware and flashing stuff on cd for me so I can upload it for you all.
This is a win for MTK6573 Star X19i owners as I'll have the updated 2.3.6 Gingerbread firmware to release for you all root modify etc in a week or so.
Be careful with ROM studio. I believe it is not compatible with MT6573.

That's what I read and did to get my scatter as I used cat then used the program linked in that thread to generate the scatter.

been searching for 5 days now :<
not a single answer found on google and forums
cant even post a new thread yet. just joined
hope someone will drop by this thread
still no solution?
got same problem here
Got a bootloop issue with an ASUS MeMo Pad 7 HD and I've booted in recovery <3e> to make a backup.
I've got a userdata_YYYYMMDD_HHMMSS.backup. I tried opening it with a bunch of tools like unyaffs, abe (Android backup extractor), going live on the file using linux tools (open as 7zip, zip, rar, tar, tar.gz, gz, bz2 , mount as iso, ext4 and so on....)
Still no luck :-/
Only clue is that the file seems compressed. During the backup under recovery, it told me 3600MB to backup and the file userdata_xxxxxxxx_xxxxxx.backup show only 2.61GB
I did this backup 3 time to ensure there were no corruption during the write process from the pad and did again the same "tests" to open the file...Not better.
If any dev' have any clue of the file format, I'd be glad to help
It doesn't seem to be a valid unix img file. Tried mounting it to no avail. When it's restored by the recovery it also extracts the individual files because i fails on one in my case and stops the entire restore... I tried unzipping it, changed extension to ,jar, .tar, .zip, etc., none of them are recognised...amazing for a standard android feature to find so little info about it
Any solution?
I called Alcatel's technical service today and they told me that you can use the backup file only from the phone. Mine gives me the following error when I try to restore it: Error Magic header
If anyone knows how to unpack the backup file I would be more than grateful.
It's a 512 byte header in front of a "tar.gz"
hexdump -C userdata_xxxxxxxx_yyyyyy.backup | lessshowed the magical zip header "1f8b0800 00000000" at offset 0x200
So, skipping 512 bytes, the rest can be gunzip | tar
dd if=userdata_xxxxxxxx_yyyyyy.backup bs=512 skip=1 | gunzip -c | tar xv
Sir ektoric what d u mean on ur post?
Sorry cant understand it..
Can u please d a step by step procedure? Please...pls...plss
Thanks in advance...
Steps?
@ektoric sir im a noob in this... Can u show a step by step procedure?
@killen00 sorry, I assume you have a linux machine (or have access to one). The command is actually all there is to it.
Code:
dd if=userdata_xxxxxxxx_yyyyyy.backup bs=512 skip=1 | gunzip -c | tar xv
If you don't have a linux machine available, might I suggest one of the many distros of your choice, most of which have LiveCDs which you can run without installing.
script for gunzip method
maybe on xda it is common sense, but for me it was necessary to know, that these stock android recovery extracted files can be restored with nandroid custom recovery, if you simply repack them into tar archive.
i put this two command lines in a dirty shell script (extract + repack as tar).
thanks to ektoric figuring out his gunzip method!
edit: notamamasboy's mount method added (but not tested yet). if script not works come back few days later, download again and check version, maybe it has changed meanwhile.
with this you're able to transfer data of non-rooted phone to (rooted) similar one.
this is useful in case touchscreen is broken, you haven't custom recovery installed, usb-debugging is disabled and connecting usb-otg-mouse doesn't work.
tested on my Archos 50 b Oxygen (Mediatek MT6582).
it works for me, feel free to improve, port to busybox and publish. no support. use at own risk.
edit: bckp2cwm.sh is deprecated it is FOR JELLY BEAN ONLY (no selinux support)
a newer (selinux) version bckp2win.sh for TWRP you can find here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3775129
How did you go about determining the magic number found at 0x200? My hexdump output does not have that magic number (1f 8b) in any instance. Leads me to believe my backup is not a tar file. Any suggestions then?
@notamamasboy, you are unfortunately correct.
Someone else also mentioned that their
Code:
userdata_xxxxxxxx_yyyyyy.backup
file was not of the same format I tried some "known magic headers", and could not find anything tell-tale. In which case, without some clues, you are back at square one.

Even more peculiarly, two backups were created a .backup and a .backup2, I wonder if combining with cat I can get somewhere...

But my mobile does not boot into CWM recovery mode as i have seen in my previous Qmobile A8 it always restarts in the defualt recovery mode which only give options to "1. reboot, 2. update from SDcard, 3. update from cashe, 4. wipe/delete user data and wipe/delete cache and in the last there is a calibarate TP, AND OFF COURSE THESE ALL ARE THE ANDROID BUILTIN RECOVERY STEPS NOT OF THE CWM
And off course there is not any file or folder named update.app in the downloaded .zip/extracted file. "as i have mentioned above the folder contains a folder named META-INF and three img files named as boot cust and system while a .bin file named logo too.
THANKS FOR YOUR TIME AND HELP.

So after I select the Reworked scatter file there is only the sec_ro partition checked to flash. So after flashing it do I now select the previous scatter file and then flash everything (including preloader)?

[STOCK ROM][QMobile Z8][L5510][WIKO RIDGE 4G|Blu Life One(2015)] Lollipop5.0.2 ROOTED

NOTE-1:
I'm not a developer or something even near to that. All information provided here is copied from different internet sources and according to best of my knowledge.
I have created this flashable zip myself and tried this on QMobile Z8 only. It's similar to Wiko Ridge 4G and Blu Life One (2015) in hardware specifications.
I'll not be responsible for any harm to you or your device. It works perfectly for me. You may try it on your own risk.
Save / backup your data before continuing.
NOTE-2:
This flashable zip flashes SYSTEM and BOOT partitions only. If you face ROM abnormal behavior like signals issue, charging problem, device heat up etc. you may flash other partitions as explained here.
Read here more about partitions.
REQUIREMENTS
To flash zip, CUSTOM RECOVERY must be installed. If you don't have one, get here.
If your device is bricked and doesn't boot, try flashing factory firmware as explained here. Even if Download Mode isn't accessible, get official support for your device and pray for it.
STEPS
Download QMobile Z8 Stock ROM Lollipop 5.0.2 Rooted flashable unsigned zip and place it on SD Card or Internal Memory (if you don't going to wipe it).
Reboot into Recovery.
Install ROM zip.
Wipe DALVIK-CACHE, CACHE & DATA.
Reboot. Ignore "No OS Installed" warning (if it comes).
Enjoy!
Thanks for Your Post

Flashable zip contains just system.img and boot.img. Extract both files and flash using dd.
What is dd , can you please explain what to do in some detail , i am not so much familiar with android

dd is a command on UNIX-like operating systems including Linux and Android to copy / dump data. https://www.computerhope.com/unix/dd.htm
Put both img files on internal sd card. Boot in recovery and run these commands from built-in terminal or adb shell:
Code:
cd /sdcard
dd if=boot.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p23
dd if=system.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p24
Make sure "/dev/block/mmcblk0p23" and "/dev/block/mmcblk0p24" are correct partitions to flash or you may overwrite wrong partitions.
Don't forget to make a backup before making experiments.

This method of creating a .img using DD is quite difficult so consider doing this instead:

This method of creating a .img using DD is quite difficult so consider doing this instead:

That's for flashing stock firmware. https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/help/factory-firmware-qmobile-z8-wiko-ridge-t3586572
Mine flashable image is a bit modified, rooted, bloats removed etc. But yes flashers are easy to use and risk-free.

Execute these commands:
Code:
ls -l /dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/boot
ls -l /dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/system

Flash QMobile factory firmware, not Wiko's. If that doesn't fix, there must be hardware problem.
Atif

on first file its copied 32 mb with no error
on second file it only copied 32 mb and said no space left on device

You must be flashing wrong partition. Or try changing different dd binary e.g. from latest busybox version.
Or if you can loop mount system.img with ext4 filesystem, simple copy files to /system partition along with file permissions.
this time i copied successfully to right partitiones then Wipe DALVIK-CACHE, CACHE & DATA.
then restart but stuck in start loop

Then other firmware partitions from Wiko must be incompatible with QMobile ROM. Simple is to use a flasher which flashes all partitions. But replace the recovery image with custom recovery like TWRP. After that you may flash this rooted ROM if needed.

DEV PLZ HELP M OUT OF OPTIONS MODEM/BASEBAND/IMEI FIX AOSP togari

hi all
Near perfect build from marshmellow Aosp ended up in IMEI , BASEband unkown and NO SIM issue , xperia z ultra 6833
every thing is prefectly working CAM , wifi , gapss , rooting etc. battery is amazing and its very very fast as minimal install
i am out of options now so put to you guys to help me out i have tried almost every zip file posted ( around 10+ ) for modem fix but nothing fixes it .....!!
can any one please post a working modem fix / base band fix
CLUE
while being totally frustrated i dirty flashed few of those modem fix files and suddenly it fixes the issues and every thing started to work perfectly , thanksfully i backed up the system and boot image via twrp .. and now able to use it but cannot make a flashable zip out of it.
IDEA
can i some how convert the ext4.win partitions ( backupfiles ) into IMG files and then pack then via script into flashable zip for recovery ?? OR is there any thing from TWRP or any other recovery via i can extract IMG files of system and boot so that i can be used as base rom ?
OPTIONS I TRIED STEPS OF FAILURE
1, tried all modem .zip files ( FAILED )
2, extracted the backedup ext4.win system file via cygwin and extracted the /etc/firmware/ files and recomplied via updator script in my source folder of /system/etc/firmware files ( FAILED )
3, tried pulling the system.img via DD command successfully done , but while trying to flash it via fastboot got an error cannot load system.img i suspect due to very large size of it i.e .2 GB + i dont knwo why ? ( FAILED )
4, i tried /etc/firmware folder form a working rom and swaped with my source and recompiled via updator script ( FAILED )
try flashing stock rom with flashtool http://www.flashtool.net/downloads.php
edit: not sure what your problem is?
You dirty flashed some file that made the imei go bad? But it solved the problem?
I'm not getting it?

@SUPERUSER
Follows are the steps i performed to give better idea about situation .
1, STEP 1 , i did : flashed the system and boot img files from aosp source build after which the IMEI wiped off.
2,Step 2, i search and flashed many modem.zip from xda posts but non of them worked. and IMEI issue still persists ( i tried one by one each file ) with clean flash .
3, Step 3, i tried two modem.zip dirty flash , and suddenly it worked after restart but i forgot which files i used
4, luckily before i wiped current combination i took the backups of system and boot img files
5, Problem , i need a proper modem file which can remove this issue happened in step 1 and 2 .
6 , Current solution or work around i did is , i Pulled the system and boot images from working rom and made them flashable zip .via script .. its working fine but its not a proper solution because in future if i want to edit the source then same issue will occur as i understand the issue lies with source i believe ..
I hope i made it clear as much as possible and hopefully get some help ...

Can you share the modem files you used to get it working?
You write you got it working and made a backup in twrp.
Can you mount the partition and pull the files?
I need:
mba.b00
modem.b01
modem.mdt
They are located in system/etc/firmware.
