[Q] Kernel for my GS2 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I have a S2 that don't accept the official firmwares, it's a i9100. I have had the same problem with a GN N7000 that I solved by installing a Rom Custom (but i have battery issues...)
Could you help me by chosing a Kernel, there is so much I don't know which to choose.
For exemple, I would like to install a CyanogenMod 10.2 (JB4.3), shall I use this CWM : GT-I9100_JB_ClockworkMod-Recovery_6.0.2.7.tar ?
or this KernelSafe : CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEN_LP7-v5.4-CWM5.zip ?
My phone :
Anroid version 2.3.3
Baseband version I9100XXKDJ
Kernel : 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKDF-CL170898
[email protected] #2
Build Number GINGERBREAD.XKDF
The mobile is rooted
Many thanks.

I strongly suggest you read the guides/tutorials stickied near the top of the General section before you do anything with your phone

[Q] Which kernel do i have? Samsung Galaxy s2

Hi,
I watched the noob video when registering, heard that you should ask in the thread relating to your issue, well i wasn't allowed as a noob to post in that thread because i had below 10 posts, which makes the video telling me to do that stupid.
Anyway, i wanted to root my Samsung Galaxy S2 ( this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399 )
But i don't understand which kernel to download for my phone cause non of them match my kernel when i look in my phone.
This is the kernel my phone has : [email protected] #2
Which kernel root package do i need to download? Is this KE2, KE7, KE8 or KF1??
I have no idea, i'm very confused.
(Reason i want to root is to mount smb shares with cifsmanager, and only that.)
I'm realizing my version is XWKDG which no one else on the entire internet has, this is probably because i turned in my phone for repair just after 2 days after recieving it due to some technical errors, i'm guessing they gave me some firmware no one else has?
Can i just use the KE2 and root with that or the XWKDD? Honestly, try google XWKDG and you'll find nothing. Everyone who is aksing about it is me, it feels lonely.
Check your link again, there is a Kernel that matches your slightly, the: XWKDG1
Hi, Im noob and I have similar problem.
I have bought 8 days old, second hand galaxy s 2 that is rooted and I want to unroot it. Problem is I dont know which cf root to use (there are 3 diferent codes XXKE7, XWKDD, XWKF3). And also which is the stock/original ROM???
Here is the info
Baseband: I9100XXKE7
Kernel ver: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKDD-CL161513 [email protected] 103 #2
Build num:Gingerbread.XWKF3
Thanx
u should look I9100 in ur kernel ver so urs is XWKDD
Thank you, thank you, thank you...
I am still trying to find the thank you button...
Can someone explain more about kernel? What will happen if I flash a Rom with different Kernel than the one on my phone?
Also Can i flash a different kernel, or i should only look for ROMS that have my kernel only.
I have been looking for weeks over the forum but i couldn't find a helpful explainaition for Kernels.
Thank you. i know there are many experts on this forum that can help us.
I need a hand as well please. I am new to all of this but I have read quite a bit so far on rooting my GS2. The issue I am having is that my when I go to
settings > about phone > kernel version it only reads 2.6.35.7 There is nothing after that to denote which CF-root I need to be using. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Model Number : SAMSUNG-SGH_I777
Andriod Version : 2.3.6
Baseband Version : I777UCKK6
Kernel Version : 2.6.35.7

Meatness: I had the same issue. If you install "cpu spy" (find it on the Market), it gives you more information about your CPU, including the full kernel information.
Hope that helps!

[Q] (19100G) Help In Custom ROMs and Root

[Solved]
I was a complete noob but for the past 2 days I've been massively experimenting with my phone to finally figure out how to use Heimdall (since I'm on a Mac) and flashing ROMs and Kernels.
My problem is I got this phone here in India, and yesterday I flashed it with the official ICS 4.0.3 version (since KIES wouldn't let me). But then I say the Resurrection Remix ROM and I really wanted it.
So here are the doubts:
1. I realize I'll need to root my phone first. I read this in a bunch of threads. I started using Chainfire's post as my reference, only to realize that they're meant for 19100 only. Not the G variant.
So, what kernels can I use to root my phone?
My current kernel string reads like this:
3.0.8 [email protected] #2 SMP PREEMPT Tue May 22 15:00:05 KST 2012
The baseband version reads: I9100GDDLP5
I assumed LP5 to be the kernels I should be looking for (referring to Chainfire's post) but couldnt find any for the G.
I came across this link:
androidforums.com/galaxy-s2-international-all-things-root/482437-galaxy-s2-gt-i9100g-all-things-root.htm
It gives a bunch of kernels for G, but for android version 2.3.6. Does this mean:
a) Those are the only kernels I can hope to get?
b) I need to flash the old version ROM to use them?
My other question is, once I do root my phone with the appropriate kernel,
can the G variant use the Resurrection ROM? If I can't, could anyone suggest a good ROM I should use?
And finally, staying true to my newbie level, can I directly flash a custom ROM using Heimdall without rooting? Also I saw a ROM with a Siyah kernel, so can't I just flash that ROM using Heimdall? I mean, if I root with some kernel and then the ROM I install changes it anyway, can't I directly use the ROM's kernel? I'm just asking.
PDA: I9100GXXLPQ
PHONE: I9100GDDLP5
CSC: I9100GODDLP7
Solution:
I went to the Cynagenmod 9 for I9100G on this site. Went to it's FAQs, flashed the clockworkmod kernel and then used Recovery mode to flash Cyanogenmod 9. Works perfectly. Better than perfect. My phone is finally living up to it's potential!
odin
you can flash a custom recovery to your galaxy with odin, check soem guide on xda, then from the recovery menu yu can flash teh resurection rom, that is prerooted
Thanks...but
@meccandroid: Thanks for the reply, but you're saying that the ROM can be installed on the G variant too? I read there's some hardware difference in 19100 and 19100G, so if the ROM is intended for 19100, wouldn't there be an issue?

You'd probably be slaughtered alive for posting this question. This is xda, mate. Search, read and try before posting questions. And even if you do have to post a question, find the correct thread for doing so.
Since you asked, look through this thread for all your rooting requirements. Me and probably a million others like you have read that and then managed to root their phones following the steps mentioned there.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Dont forget to thank the contributor.
Yours being 4.0.4 theres a problem with an EMMC bug bricking the phone. again, read the forums thoroughly before going ahead.
Just flash a pre-rooted kernel.
I guess there is a thread discussing about rooting.

-You are running stock 4.0.4 ROM which it's known to have brick bug on it's kernel.
-after rooting, DO NOT factory reset/data or restore any backup without changing your kernel to custom one. Siyah, Dorimanx, Dream, and Speedmod kernels are known to be safe.

I have the same setup as you so I think you can look into my thread which i started yesterday and Jokesy took the time and answered all my questions there including linking to a guide (thank you Jokesy, fantastic). I did not use Odin, but i used CWM Recovery Touch.
After following Jokesy link i rooted my phone, i installed the latest siyah S2 kernel (no beta), i also installed Titanium backup and purchased the PRO key. After that i followed an external link of services and programs that i could safely freeze/delete.
It shall be said that i have been using SGS2 since last spring/summer and this was my first time modifying anything with the phone.
Here is my thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1841641
Frank
For simplest root just use method 1 from 1st guide in my signature. No CF-Root, no CWM needed. Just copy one file to external SD card and update from stock recovery.
- Thanks for the contributions... - there's a lot to take in -
- This 'Bricking Bug' is something of a concern... - so I'll be doing some more reading before I choose whether to proceed with rooting my SGS2 -
- Hopefully things will be simpler with the Nexus 7... -
- Understanding the various versions, terminology & methods etc. is giving me something of a head-ache today -
- But thanks again... -

different basband?
Hello devs,
I ran into a problem few hours ago and I am trying to work my way around and through it. I honestly did, I have already lost patience and feel like quitting life itself. I wiped my phone, installed a different BOOTLOADER, different MODEM, different CODE and different CSC. I did all this to install a new ROM, I didn't like the changes so I went for my backup and restored it. Everything was successful, except that the Baseband version hasn't changed at all.
What is a baseband? Does it matter if I installed a different one (it is supposed to be XXLPS-I9100)?
Thanks
Baseband and modem are pretty much the same thing mate. You don't need to have a particular one. If you find your signal isn't as good as it should/used to be, you can change your baseband at a later stage. It doesn't matter if you stick to the one you have. It won't spring up at night and chop your phone into two bits

PhilZ-cwm6 which version
Hi,
I have a samsung gallaxy S2 and I am rather confused which version of PhilZ-cwm6 kernel to use. I am wanting to use the most current version possible and I am not sure what version that is nor kernel code. I am wanting to root stock android. When I flashed from stock ICS to JB I used the following offical rom XFC-I9100XWLSS-20130817002141.zip and see below for attached screenshot of my phone details, there are differences in the kernel numbers which is causing confusion. I hope that is all the info that is required. Thank you so much in advance for your reply.
hi all
i need to know which version of kernel best for rom >> I9100XWLSD << ?
I have a GS2 I9100XWLSW, suffering the EMMC brick bug. Still with original kernel, and recovery. Rooted with Framaroot.
I'd want to install Philz in order to install either Omnirom or Cyanogen.
I have seen in the Philz's original thread ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31310884&postcount=3 ) the link to my PDA version (v5.06.1 ). However on goo.im ( http://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/i9100 ) I can find a higher updated version (v6.48.4), however this one has no description assuring me that's the correct file for PDA LSW. Is it, also considering my EMMC bug? Or maybe it's just the recovery, without the kernel? If that's the point, then WHERE I can find the latest kernel+recovery for my phone?
Also, which install method should I prefer: update through the zip file, or flash through Odin? First one seems easier, but I heard that it may have problems installing certain Cyanogen versions from the Philz's temporary recovery. I'd want to install Lollipop from either Omnirom or Cyano as soon as they become reasonably stable.. also, Philz v5.06.1 comes with CWM 6.0.3.2, but isn't CWM 6.0.4.4+ required to install KitKat or higher?
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: I also noticed that some zip files are marked LSW-XEU, while others are LSW-OXX.. how do I know which is mine? Actually the complete details of my phone are:
PDA: I9100XWLSW
PHONE: I9100XXMS3

Hi,
What you are looking for is the kernel code in the rom build. On mine I can see it under "About device" at the end of build number - I9100XWLSH, it is the XWLSH part you are looking for. You can also see it if you download terminal emulator from the playstore. Just run the terminal and type getprop and press enter. Scroll up until you find [ro.build.PDA]: this is the rom. Again it is the last part of this you need. Hope this helps

I'm not sure I understand, but if you are talking about the stock rom, you should get the latest version for your region. If you want a rooted version of stock I would choose one that has a modified kernel available from the ones @Phil3759 developed. That is, the ones under the latest version in the main thread

The listed files are not kernels, they are updated recoveries. To root your stock rom, you need to find the the kernel below the latest recoveries and match the rom to the kernel code as described in the main thread. You can then flash the latest recovery, then reboot into recovery if you want to for example flash a kitkat or lollipop rom. The older recovery embedded in the modified kernel won't be compatible with these later android versions

Download Philz Kernel in .tar format and instal it over Odin 3.0.7 ie than whwn boot up, download on ur internal or better external sd card kernel and recovery(sometimes it is the same one file) and restart ur mob in recovery and instal that new/old recovery which u previosly got before boot loop or bricking... than reinstal ur system or if u have backup just restore it,. Important part is that u need same Recovery u did before U braked up Ur system... Ask 4 more
