Autosync .. - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone, does auto-sync drain battery ? Somewhere i read yes, some other place i read no ..
People telling yes says : It's always keeping a connection with google so draining battery..
Peple telling no says: It's when the app demand that it's sync background .. so no battery drain..
So what's the real answer to this ? Does it drain or not ?

When an app syncs, it needs to connect to the internet, so that uses battery. Also when it syncs in the background. However it is not continiuously connected, so it will not drain your battery at once.
You can change your settings to a lower frequency (e.g. sync only every hour)

[Q] Yet another battery drain issue

Hi everyone,
sorry if this is a noobish question or if there is some obvious answer however 5 hours of googling dint give me any solutions (other than flashing a different rom)
I got my SGS2 a few days ago and so far the batter drains in roughly 5 hours just laying on the table without the screen ever being turned on.
I checked the batter usage log with both stock battery info app and the BetterBatteryInfo app from the XDA forums both seem to indicate that the culprit is the email app which has over 80% battery usage and according to the BetterBatteryInfo its keeping the device awake.
I only have 1 exchange email account set up on the device.
Some other posts i found online seem to indicate that there is some issue with calendar syncing for exchange but they refer to os version 2.3.3 mine came with 2.3.5
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I tried setting email check to push and 15 minutes both seem to have same results.
This is what i learned as of today.
First of check if your wifi is on or not. Your wifi router could be the main culprit especially if it is dlink dir655. It could eat as much as 5% every minute. All the android phone sgs1 sgs2 and sg mini in my home drained out within few hours.l with active wifi connected to dlink.
After changing to other brands the drain disappeared. 2% per hour on wifi.
This is on stock rom with rooted kernel. The only apps i freeze is the wifi sharing and manager.
Who would expect dlink is android battey killer (literally).

Start with all the battery threads .
Download Better Battery Stats and look for PARTIAL WAKELOCKS .

it was both on wifi and mobile data, and i got a netgear router, i checked the partial wakelocks that points to email app, I'm trying to play around with what gets synced.
When I left only calendar sync enabled on my exchange account it seems to have helped but i will investigate further.

regarding battery life and sync

I am trying to improve my battery life. my question is
if I have set all of my emails, flipboard, weather, apps to sync every 1 hour, but I have the connection toggled off and only toggle it on like once in two hours does it drain battery?
the connection is off but for the system to check all those apps and conclude it cannot connect to network

Well if it's set to sync and not active connection it's still gonna try isn't it?

Kernel wakelock lli_cp_wlock

One day phone started to lose battery. Using betterBatteryStats I've found that it is caused by kernel wakelock lli_cp_wlock. It appears without any pattern and I can stop it only rebooting the phone. I've tried to reinstall the system and flash newest firmware, but it hasn't helped. Searching the internet I've found that lli is low latency interface controller which is connected in some way to the modem. Any idea how to deal with it? samsung g850f android 5.0.2 stock rom
P.S. sorry for my english, it is not my native language
Same problem exactly here. Doesn't anybody have any clue on what a solution would be? This "lli_cp_wlock" wakelock comes and goes wherever it wants.

Try to turn off functions or apps that use GPS/location or background syncing,
and turn on GPS/location manually only when you need it.
Functions that use GPS/location like:
Google Location History
My places/Find my phone
Google remote control
Samsung remote control
GeoLookout(weather notifications)
Weather syncing(use current location)
Just check everything in settings/Google settings and turn off those you don't use.
And social networking/messaging/email apps would background sync
or check for push message regularly,
try to turn off sync or turn off app features that use locations or uninstall them
and see if there's difference in battery usage.

All these are done from my part at least and more. Nothing happens. It is not an app problem, it is an Android System battery drain.
I installed BetterBatteryStats_xdaedition_2.2.0.0B5 as a system app,
and here's what I've noticed so far:
The percentage in "Kernel Wakelock" is percentage of time,
not percentage of battery usage.
My percentage of lli_cp_wlock is less than 1%,
so if your percentage is high, it should be related to some apps.
The percentage of battery usage is in "Process",
check here to see what apps drain the battery the most.
The percentage in "Alarms" is percentage of wakeup counts,
have you checked the numbers here?

[Screenshots]: Battery drain overnight. Need help identifying wakelocks.

It's a stock T-Mobile LG G5. I get around 2-2.5h SOT. Overnight it drops the battery by 8-11%. There are 34 screenshots in the ZIP file below, showing GSAM Battery monitor and BetterBatteryStats data. I've never used BetteryBatteryStats before so if someone could help me identify the culprit I'd greatly appreciate that.
The signal strength is excellent and the always-on display is disabled. The bluetooth and GPS are always enabled. I should mention that last week I put the phone in Airplane mode and the drain stopped, but obviously it's not a solution.
1.) why do you know, that the gsm signal is excellent? Because you can see 5 stripes in the notification bar? That is not real! I can see 5 stripes too, but this at 15 ASU.
But 100% signal is = 30 ASU! So this result can differ even you believe you can see 100 signal quality.
2.) my system is running on 20p. No BT and no Wlan (no NFC) with 8% for 24Std. (150 user apps installed)
3.) wifi and G-Mail polling sucks much battery power too! you should switch it of to compare! or is it real necessary to be on over the night???
4.) what’s about the google fitness app? this app needs power to check the sensors.
5.) Twitter; Google; G-Mail; Fotos are syncing many times! You can see together more then 800 wake ups!
no wonder that this together will suck your battery empty!
i would suggest you to switch off BT and W.Lan over the night! This should spend a lot of battery power too! Same for syncing and background data traffic.
Try to use 3C Battery Monitor app. there you can see the power consumption every 10 min in the night.
read this too! -> https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=74381087&postcount=327
I have 55 ASUs, so the connection is not the problem. Last night it only drained by 1%. I had both Bluetooth and GPS enabled so I don't think they are the problem either. Twitter, Gmail also were enabled and they actually pulled and displayed some notifications, yet the drain was minimal.
What I think sometimes happens is Google app or Play Services goes crazy starts waking up the phone for no reason. Would you agree based on the screenshots? Or could it be some bug in the OS that does this?

Standby drain

When you sleep, does your phone sleep, or does it stay up all night and crunch 1s and 0s? Rate this thread to express how you deem the speed at which the Google Pixel 4's battery drains under standby conditions. A higher rating indicates that when the phone is not in use, the battery drains minimally.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Really good standby drain for me. Around 0.7-1. %
The standby.. Everytime is different.
Sometimes i get 10% overnight. Sometimes 6%. Sometimes 7-8%. And last night 2% (for 7h).
Wifi always on, motion sense on, AOD off, adaptive battery on, phone flat on display

Tried one night. It was about 8% for 8h..
And last night it drained 5% in 9h, with adaptive battery on

this is with 60hz.. check to see if wifi scanning is on. even if you turn it off and you use an app that asks you to turn location on like Google maps. if you hit yes it will automatically turn wifi scanning back on. I also turn off auto sync and sync things manually when I choose too.
Thanks for the reply.
How is going in prolonged standby? I've observed that when commuting it drains more battery. Even if i am using location history that's a bit too much, because most of the time i am not moving. I am just placing the phone on my desk.

Turning the wifi and Bluetooth scanning off are among the first things I do when i setup a device.
I need auto sync.
I've just turned off "mobile data always on" from developer options and will see if it helps or not.

having location history on shouldn't affect the battery, it's just storing history.
it'll turn back on though if an app requests for location and you press yes. for ex. use Google maps and it'll probably ask for location to be turned on even if you have location on already. if you press yes it'll turn on wifi scanning.
I do the same. turning off mobile data always on should help.
the standby drain usually comes from play services, but it could also be an app that was downloaded. from my experience, it's usually play services.. yeah if you need autosync then it is what it is. because even if your phone is face down it's still going to use your cpu. it's probably better for you to turn adaptive battery on, but you should limit/restrict your apps manually, instead of letting it notify you when it thinks an app is running too much in the background. I know a pixel 3 user that was using adaptive battery with 30 apps restricted and it was working for him. I never restricted apps manually when I had adaptive battery on. that could be the reason adaptive battery never worked for me. my play services would be higher than 5%, sometimes even 15%-20% with it on. now I rarely go over 4%
these pics are from my 3. it also depends on your reception, there aren't any battery saving tips for that , except to put it in airplane mode.
one more thing is to calibrate your battery. I understand that li-ion batteries don't have memory like nickel. but I think it something to do with the OS storing the battery capacity or something.
charge your phone to 100, drain it till it turns off. plug it in and charge it to 100. unplug turn it on and repeat the steps 1 more time. this helps especially on big updates.
the battery becomes more efficient and consistent. when I updated to 10 from pie my battery would drain quickly to like 50% and then below that it would slow down.
I am roaming right now and connected to a WiFi network with dual band on the same SSID. It's frustrating how much the battery drains when idling!
7% loss in less than 2h completely idle..
From 95% to 88% in 1h40 of standby!
I have no access to the router to force it on a band, it keeps switching from 2.4ghz to 5ghz.
If i turn off wifi and leave mobile data on, then Google Play services is on top of the draining list.
I am starting to hate all these Android inconsistencies..

turn off your auto sync. it updates every 15 mind and keeps your phone from dozing. just manually sync it. it literally takes 6 clicks.

Man, it has literally nothing to do with auto sync.
I have battery issues both when using the phone and while standby.
The phone is getting annoying warm. That doesn't happen when i am home. Now i am using a different wifi connection.
Now home (different router, different SSID for each band) the wifi consumption seems normal and the phone doesn't heat anymore while using. That's so pity when you have no control to wireless router and you get into this situation! This seems to be related to Android, since i had the drain also on OnePlus 5.
Made a little test, when not in "doze mode" it consumes 2% each hour.
And overnight somewhere between 4-8% (random !?) for ~8h.
All standby times, no background tasks
Wifi & Bluetooth scanning off, motion sense off, idle screen (AOD) off, wifi on, location on, always on data off, Bluetooth on, tap to wake on, lift to wake on, now playing on, assistant voice match off
My battery drain reduced to 3% overnight (8+ hours sleep), with motion sense completely OFF
@jalado do you have any issue with Google play services or phone idle consuming a lot of battery?
I've attached a screenshot with battery usages.
I've already cleared Google play services data + cache yesterday (+ a reboot after about 30mins) before charging.

no, my idle drain at night is like 1-2% over 6-8 hours. I don't have auto sync on though, so my phone stays asleep. your play services seems good for auto sync being on. mine's around 3% a day, if that.
I will try to turn off auto sync overnight and see then.
I got 6% drain for ~8h overnight.
Btw, when home with wifi on i have no issues with Google play services battery drain. But when commuting and with data usage (being on mobile data about 2h of the time) the drain is high!
I have to test more and see if it's because location history, Google fit or mobile data. Or all..
So I've turned off auto sync overnight.
It drained 6% (70% -> 64%)... So for me the same drain :/.
Another thing that i am disappointed of is the Google Play Services when on mobile data (on idle/standby). I am on LTE with good coverage.
