I have just gotten myself a SG2, my first Android device.
I probably wouldn't want to root, at least so early, if it weren't for Root Call Blocker Pro which I want/need to install.
So I wanted to ask a couple of related questions:
1. Is there a way of rooting without losing all the apps + settings? If not, can you recommend a could backup app?
2. Could someone please point me to the EASIEST step-by-step guide on how to root a SG2? I have found a couple of threads but am not sure if they are the most up-to-date/best/most appropriate for a novice.
3. Will I be able to apply the official SG2 updates from Samsung after rooting? (OK, so that was three questions....)

Rooting using CF-root replaces the phones kernel (core of the OS) with a modified one, with clockworkmod recovery (nandroid backup, etc), it also includes insecure adb (adb that can run as root not just standard user) and copy's the superuser apk to the system dir and sets permissions.
This is all done via a special initramfs attached to an otherwise stock kernel.
why would you want to root and then use OTA stock roms?
If you find you can't get OTA stock updates after a root (i.e. if Samsung decide to utilise some mad kernel reset counter ban hammer) then simply check XDA where I guarantee the OTA stcks will appear pretty quickly!
Things to consider:
1. Rooting is very very good for numerous reasons that can be found everywhere on XDA - and google.
2. You can replace the kernel for root but continue to use stock rom (and use a jig to replace the reset counters) for pretty much stock functionality.
3. If you root and don't like what you get (i.e. you're mental) then it is just as easy to replace all factory rom/kernel information (which are always available in the original development thread) but you should invest in a jig (from ebay) so you can reset the counters (you can do this via software but I find a jig far simpler).

Rooting won't lose your apps. Titanium Backup Pro is the best way to go.
Install Kies, exit Kies, open Odin, phone in download mode + plug it in, don't touch any of the Odin settings, load "PDA" with chainfire's kernel -> go!
It's really straightforward, but it can be a little nerve wracking the first time.

I just rooted, and it "only" took me about 15 min including the downloading of the various files (still way more though than the 30 sec. it should take according to the Chainfire post!! ).
@m4rshall's summary made it clear that the steps are really very few and simple, because when you read the other posts, it seems like a much more complex process due to their size, though they are absolutely necessary to get all the details.

1. What would I need to do if I wanted to the original, factory state?
Not that I'm planning to, but in case I notice some issue that makes me decide to go back (I read in that loooong thread that some people noticed slower connections after rooting??)?
2. From what I've gathered, the yellow exclamation mark at boot is purely "cosmetic" and does not effect in any way at all the performance of the device. Correct?

Clockworkmod recovery is a replacement recovery, it allows you to preform full device snapshot backups, to allow you to restore your phone to any point in time.
Allows you to flash CWM compatible zips.
Mount your SD to a computer while in recovery to copy things to it.

There are many different stories to talk about.
As it is very difficult for me to identify your interests and knowledge, I reduce my answer to the IMO most important threads for SGS2:
1. Intratech's Official Firmware thread => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Please read the first post. There is a detailed description of how to flash a new Firmware/ROM to your phone, and there is a Quick Root Guide too.
This rooting method is very elegant (as you do not get a yellow triangle and the binary counter will not be increased), but it is a little bit "manual".
For a little bit more "automated" rooting, look at the next thread.
Most important is, that you can find the latest, official and stable Firmware version most as non-wipe together with the corresponding stock kernel, which you might need for getting rid of the yellow triangle after flashing a rooted kernel (such as CF-Root or SpeedMod).
I always prefer flashing Frankenstein ROMs from third post, as you can combine them to any other Firmware parts, such as Modem/Phone/Baseband (for inter-connectivity) and CSC (for region and/or carrier dependent customizations) files.
2. Chainfire's CF-Root thread => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399&highlight=CF+Root
Everything you need to root your phone is to flash a rooted kernel to your phone (See description in first post).
And if you want to get rid of the yellow triangle, Chainfire has described it in his second post.
The only thing to do is to find the corresponding kernel for your ROM.
So, it is useful to flash a new ROM first, then flash the corresponding CF-Root kernel and you have root access on your phone.
There are many other goodies which come along with CF-Root kernel, such as ClockWorkMod (CWM) recovery mode (an extended recovery mode including features, such as backup&restore, clear Dalvik cache, flash other zip files from sd card, etc.) and CWM Manager app (to have a very user-friendly app to make use of most new CWM recovery features).
But you can use any other rooted kernel, which is compatible with your ROM, to root your phone.
3. Custom ROMs ... such as CyanogenMod ...
There are many, custom ROMs and kernels optimized for different things, such as better performance (higher scores in benchmarks) or longer battery life.
You have to take your time and search on yourself what you really want most and which custom ROM or kernel you want to try.

Just to be on the "safe" side, do a backup before flashing.
If you have CWM recovery mode (or CWM Manager app), just do a complete system / nandroid backup.
So you will be able to restore this backup, if one of the tested custom ROMs or kernels messed up your phone.

By reading the threads stated above, multiple times, very carefully.
I can jailbreak a phone in my sleep, but this stuff kinda went over my head too. I got the GS2 (my first android also) a couple of months ago and have been reading up on stuff periodically but still don't understand a lot of it.
It's why I'm glad there are so many helpful people who write clear guides on how to do stuff.
I'm sure by the time the GS3 comes out I'll have a bit of a grasp on things!!

Yea I was scared too. All I can say is, READ THE STEPS ONCE, TWICE, AND AGAIN BEFORE YOU TOUCH YOUR PHONE.
First off. It's not possible to brick it when flashing a kernel(to root). The only way to brick is replacing the boot loader, only official Samsung ROM's do that and it takes less than a second so the chances are slim. I say you start by downloading CF-ROOT for your current firmware. Just be careful and read the instructions. I also recommend to only flash roms from XDA. Also, never use PIT file in ODIN. Welcome to Android, I was new as well 3 months ago and I've been changing kernels and roms like crazy since then
Your current firmware is KF3. I HIGHLY recommend downloading and installing KJ3 from Intratech's thread. It is very fast. Download the one from Frankenstein firmwares. That will not root, you need to flash cf-root or other rooted kernels to do that.

dont worry mate i felt the same as well..but as stated above by the rest of the posts read carefully the steps and you should be fine honestly
People talk about jailbreaking iPhones being easy, i could say the same about rooting and flashing ROM's, simple to do once you get the hang of it (and read up)
Just take it slow, pour a coffee and read. I can't stress it enough. It'll make you more comfortable when you actually do it.
Search for the "litening ROM" has great step by step including links to Odin and all that good stuff.

So Guys I rooted My SGS 2 using the following method..
First of all, make sure you’re having all these tools mentioned below at the time rooting.
Odin Downloader
XWKDD tar file [don’t extract, leave as it is]
SuperOneClick
USB Data Cable
Samsung’s KIES 2.0 or get it from download page
Install Samsung Kies 2.0,if not installed, as you will need the correct USB driver for software’s to communicate. Turn on USB debugging mode in galaxy s2 from Setting>Applications>Development>USB Debugging
1. Boot device into download mode. For getting into download mode on galaxy s2, first turn off the phone and power it on again by pressing Volumedown button, Home button and Power simultaneously. You’ll see a downloading icon once you go into this mode.
2. Start Odin downloader
3. Connect phone to computer via USB.
4. Odin software will notify you when it detects phone and gets connected.
5. In the software, just select “Auto Reboot” and “Reset Time” checkboxes and leave every other options as default.
6. Press PDA icon and select the XWDD tar file you just downloaded [XWKDD_insecure.tar]
7. Press Start and ODIN will flash the kernel and after that, Galaxy S2 will reboot.
8. Don’t remove the phone from USB and let it reboot.
9. After rebooting, start SuperOneClick and press ROOT.
9. Once again reboot the device.
That’s it, Your Samsung Galaxy S2 is now Rooted!!
Now enjoy all the custom roms and overclocking apps for galaxy without any restrictions.
And I used CWM manager to remove the yellow triangle....

So Guys I rooted My SGS 2 using the following method..
First of all, make sure you’re having all these tools mentioned below at the time rooting.
Odin Downloader
XWKDD tar file [don’t extract, leave as it is]
SuperOneClick

For now just enjoy your phone as is probably. Over time you will find out what you really needed root for. For me titanium backup is number 1.
Unlike an iPhone, even without rooting you can do most things you need but yeah some need root.
Personally I would have rooted using cf root/speedmod etc to have cwm recovery for backups.

You shouldnt worry just a new platform. Depending on how patient you have been after updating the new firmware on your iOS toys jailbreaking can be much worse than this. Apple developer fanboys have a tendency to wrap it up with a pretty little gui and a sexy dress but it is really just as many steps. We just like it au naturel over here

Ok so i have installed Cyanogem Mod 7.1.0 ...
But now i want to get back to my stock firmware because i want to use tv out function which is missing from Cyanogen mod 7.1.0 so can u please help me out in getting back to my stock firmware...
Just go to intratech thread that was linked on first page. Then i would recommend to chose the frankenstein version to be able to reset your counter if needed.
Chose the firmware you want (kk5 is pretty good) and flash it with odin.
You can also flash a custom rom that is based on sammy like checkrom. You can do this trough cwm recovery and don't need to use odin for flashing.
If you don't have cwm yet you can install siyah kernel to get it.

I have an sg2 (sprint) had it flashed to boost, the 3g antenna comes and goes is there a fix for this?...also will I be able to get the facial recognition lock screen on my phone...please let me know thanks

There are a lot of ROMs based on the original Galaxy S software, so if you want the added customization, there are many options.
But what you want to do now to return to the original ROM, is to go in this thread:

I have recently bought a the I9100 internation version and I am really pleased, however I do know the power of a ROM and how much it could improve or brick your phone.
However I came from the Galaxy S i9000, I never managed to recover the phone, so it would be recognized by kies, it did recognize my phone, but it said that 'Kies didn't support any upgrades for it'. Meaning if I would like to return it for garantee reasons, the shop or manufacturer will see I have been messing with my phone, which excludes my warranty.
Therefore I wonderd if there was a possibility to install roms or root your phone and unroot it, so kies would regonize it again.
Thanks alot and feel free to suggest any rom

yes there is a way cfroot to which will give you superuser access and also CWM recovery by then swapping back to stock kernel will unroot also if you using odin to flash this wil increase binary counter look for a app called triangle away this will reset the binary counter but only works on ics.
this is just basics to answer quickly your question please still search within the sgs2 forum sections most of all new users questions have been answered and there is many guides for new users to refer to in development sections prior to installing customs roms etc

I know about CF root .. but as I said before, I managed to restore the stock functionality of my Galaxy S, but I never managed to get support from Kies again. ('Kies doesn't support updates for your phone'). I don't know if the Galaxy S II method might diffrentiate from that .. but I do want to be on the safe side with my warranty and I don't want another bad to happen to my phone.

Check out the links in my signature, especially the one about going back to stock. That should satisfy your request.
Long story short, reset your flash counter and flash stock rom. But make sure you READ
OK. The experience on here over the past 6 mths or so goes something like this. About 50% of people who go back to stock firmware for their region after using custom roms or stock firmware not for their region seem to be able to get OTA updates via Kies OK. For some reason(s), the other 50% or so of these people seem not to be able to get OTA updates to work despite flashing a full stock rom for their region (with correct CSC).
Why doesn't it seem to work for some people ? Who knows ? I don't think I've seen a single answer that could cover even a small majority of those cases.
Regardless, if you find you ever go back to stock with the intention of getting OTA firmware updates & they don't work, do what plenty of people on here do & flash them via Odin. Easy fixed.
The bottom line with warranties is this. The moment you start rooting your phone or flashing non-stock firmware on it, you should forget about/lose all expectations of warranty service/replacement should something go wrong with your phone. At the end of the day, you mess with your phone, why should Samsung/your telco foot the bill ?
Having said that, if you format everything, go back to stock & reset the flash counter, again, the experience on here is many people seem to get warranty service OK.
What you seem to be looking for is a 100% iron-clad guarantee.
There isn't any. If potentially borking your phone & having to pay to have it repaired/replaced yourself frightens you, best advice would be simply don't mess with it. Stay on stock. That's the only way you're getting 100% guarantees. If you've only ever been on stock/OTA updates & never rooted/flashed custom firmware and the phone borks, they pay to fix it.

hey everyone, i am new here.. i have recently bought a samsung galaxy s3 GT-i9300
and i've used and installed several apps on it and after some time i've come through several apps that needs root in order to run.. so i think its time to learn how to root it incase i wanna try it soon.. after doing some searching i found out this, i will summarize ,
1st, shutdown and reboot using download mode
2nd, after ur in download mode, conect usb and open odin
3rd, in Odin , choose PDA and put the .tar file which by searching i downloaded a "CF-Root-SGS3-v6.3.tar" (Please recomend if this is normal and for any s3 will work), also only mark f.reset time and auto reboot
4th, click start on Odin , and some serious things starts to be typed on ur phone, u can remove the usb now
5th, ur done wait for ur samsung to start and ur done

1 -is that it??? are there any mod or rom or steps or watever things to be done anymore?
2- is that i've heard people saying that after rooting there camera crashes and that it gives error or black screen everytime they open it, is this true? if yes how to solve it?
3- is it possible to unroot device and get the settings and software like it was before, as if it wasnt rooted , in other words , wipe out and reinstall everything like it came from factory??
4- what are the consequences of rooting? will i really like throw my phone away in the trash incase something went wrong during rooting or after?

Also to answer your questions
1- Yes that is done aslong as in your apps menu you see CWM and SU app now on your phone.
2- Ive rooted my Galaxy S3 and never had a problem with the Camera at all. I think it just sometimes happens. If this happens to you then search the forum for possible fixes.
3- Yes it is possible to unroot your phone. Check the second link i gave you above for this.
4- Nothing is completely safe but if you follow the instruction fully then you should have no problems.
5- All i can advise is to follow each phones rooting tutorial to the letter and you should be safe.

also can i backup data of games etc? whats the solution to not waste everything i've downloaded lately, like need for speed and other games/apps that i've downloaded each over 500 mb , will connecting my phone to my computer and copying all files on SD data folder, then after root i Paste them back to the SD data, will that work?

Ive never used Titanium Backup at all so cant too much on that side of things. But rooting wont lose your apps and data so your safe in that front.
But if you find the titanium backup thread then they will be more than willing to help you out.

Something not covered in Donsimmi posts above... Another way to unroot and return your phone to Stock is to flash a stock ROM. You can browse onsite for stock roms such as [ROM][CWM][XXDLI3 Jellybean 4.1.1] Odexed & Fully Deodexed Stock Roms - I'm a bit noob as well but I think all that means is they've done some tweaking on a stock ROM release - or you can find the latest Stock ROM for your region and search/download it from SamMobile
Some of the custom ROM's will leave you rooted and some don't, but you just run the Odin process again. Or you can get Mobile Odin Pro which can flash from on the phone and includes the function to add root and other things into the flash process.
I cannot emphasise enough, FOLLOW THE STEPS EXACTLY in the ROM descriptions. Things may still go funny at times but if you have precisely followed the steps you know where and perhaps why and you can help those who will help you fix things by saying, I did THIS, then THAT, then this happened. If you've gone off and done something not in the instructions, it makes it harder for anyone to understand what went wrong.
I've had 3 'Oh ****!' moments so far and each one I have been able to retrieve by having followed the instructions exactly.

Oh, and Titanium? It does both apps and data, and you can choose to restore everything or just particular parts of the backup. But don't forget to find a program to back up your system as well.

I know you stated you had tried it all but I have a couple questions for you.
#1. Are you able to odin and access the latest PhilZ Recovery on your Mega? I ask because I read other sections like the Note 2's, etc on AT&T and they are able to flash recovery fine and boot into recovery fine.
#2. If you have tried this method, did you try and flash the latest SuperSU v2.00 from Chainfire through PhilZ?

Below is a method I suggested to some in my OTA Update thread to NE4 ( KitKat ) for Rooting all my Galaxy phones on KitKat listed and not one has failed to gain root or to disable KNOX. Note this method will trip KNOX and void your warranty. Try this at your own risk....

1.Flash the latest Philz recovery ( Galaxy Mega (meliusltexx) ) .
1a) Be sure when flashing a custom recovery not to allow the device to reboot into the OS right after and instead go straight to the recovery first.
( Uncheck reboot device in Odin or if you forgot to uncheck the box after a successful flash of the Custom Recovery in Odin, quickly hold down vol+, Menu & Power Button or last resort pull the battery before it has time to reboot into the OS {again this is after the phone reboots from flashing the custom recovery and passes}).
The security will over write the custom recovery with the stock recovery and you will have to flash Philz or if available TWRP again. First boot into custom recovery will make it stick on after.
2. Once flashed and booted into recovery, you'll be on the main screen.
( Optional but recommended )
2a) At this point, and it is just a suggestion to you all, make a complete backup of the phone as it sits unmodded. I couldn't really tell you how many times I have read/seen of people post that they forgot to back up their phones after they had attempted to do something to their phones and had caused them to have problems..... well many would be surprised how often this happens and I have been guilty of it due to just being impatient. This way you will have a starting point fresh, stock and even unrooted to go back to. After your done proceed to step #3.
3. Tick on Philz settings.
4. Tick on Re-root System (Super SU).
5. You will then see the log scroll at the bottom and tell you to reboot and install SuperSU through the Playstore.
6. Reboot Device and once you have booted up, install SuperSU via Playstore or if you have the APK on hand, install it.
7. Once installed it will ask you that it needs to update binaries, do so. It will also detect KNOX and ask to attempt
to disable it, go ahead and it will attempt to do so. ( I have yet for it to say unsuccessful )
8. Enjoy being rooted afterwards.

Well technically all bootloaders are locked (except for the few that aren't) but I take it AT&T is wanting/trying to join the band wagon with Verizon and locking the bootloaders indefinitely by encrypting them on all the devices they can now.
Sorry then, my method will not work straight forward. Good luck. :good:

Believe me, we have tried it all. I have tried a process similar to this and when the phone got done with all the flashing and went to boot up, I got a prompt that said 'We have detected software not approved for use by AT&T. Please take your phone to an AT&T store for assistance.' It also says Secure Check Failed: Kernel. I had to send my phone to sammy to get it fixed since I tripped a few flags. Should be back by Friday the 10th.

I don't know much about this but my S4 active also has a locked bootloader, and I was able to achieve root on 4.4.2 using the above method. Thought it might be possible to adapt to your cause.

Tried and my device still won't act right, can only get into download mode. recovery is gone and when i attempt to power on, I get a msg about Secure fail: Kernel and then a yellow triangle with a ! says 'System software not authorized by AT&T has been found on your phone. Please turn off your phone and go to the nesrest AT&T store for help."
UPDATE: A buddy of mine has a JTAG service and I'm going to send it to him for repair. UGH! I'm selling this sonofabitch. I should NOT have to go thru this much bull**** just do modify something I paid 500 bucks for without a contract.

Alright.
To summarize for people who haven't paid attention. Phone was bricked in a last ditch effort to flash back to 4.3 because the 4.4 update made my phone run like s#it. I also have an S4 Active and the service sucks harder than it already did. The 4.4 update makes the S4 drop out constantly and the battery life blows. Samsung told me to run kies in download mode to get it back to 4.3 I did and BOOM, now phone is fu©k!ng bricked and they won't fix it, claiming it's 'rooted' because the kernel says it's version 3 when it's supposed to be at 4 for kitkat. Fu©k!ng duh, you jerks made me flash it back. I am personally never buying another samsung product again because their customer service was horsesh!t. I happen to have a sammy tv, blu ray, home theater and 2 of their former 'top end' phones, but now I'm ditching them. They can lick my scrotum for all I care anymore.
end rant, back to music.

No root.
I do not have root so I can not do those things. If there is a way without root please point me in that direction. Thanks
