You need your computer for making a bootable CWM SD in order to root. No other way. You can make the SD quickly using my new procedure in item 1a in my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature.
BTW, this is the wrong thread for this question. Should be in Q&A.

Odin is a Samsung device thing. Similarly, hboot is for HTC and RSD is for Motorola.
Do you have an 8gb or 16gb model?

8 gb and yeah i knew that galaxy was odinable thats why i wasnt sure how to do the rooting and a cooler rom to my nook if it was possible
thanks
Safest thing is to just use a CM7 Rom SD card.
is there a video that shows from step 1 how to flash a rom on the nook and how to get cwm on there? thanks
I'm not 100% sure but I am fairly certain there is no CWM for the 8GB NT and thus those users have been sticking to booting CM7 from an sd card.
Perhaps we should start a donation drive for it...

If you want to run CM7 from your SD card, here are the instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22199348&postcount=1
Just download both zips in the SD VERSION IMAGE section, write the image to your SD using the included tool, put SD in your NT, power on.

Well, since we're in the TABLET section and not the COLOR section that would make perfect sense... But why wake up such an ancient thread??
I've followed all Windows Instructions for making an Ubuntu Recovery SD card using Adam Outler's ROM. I don't plan on using it for recover, but just to test out Ubuntu on the Nook. However I am unable to get the nook to boot from the SD card (and boot at all) when the Ubuntu SD card is in. I have an SD card with CM10.1 and it boots just fine.
Question being, why is the nook not booting from the SD card? Should I dual boot Ubuntu on my laptop and try the Linux Instructions?
Only for 16 GB Nook tablet I tried Linux instructions on 8 GB. No go

I don't have problems with a bricked device. I wanted to remove the ROM/recovery file so I can use Ubuntu as an operating system. If there a a way to use the Ubuntu operating system on 8gb I would like to try it out.
I need help. The nook is stuck in boot loop. Can someone give nee simple instructions to go back to stock? Or anything to make the device operable? I'm a noob so the easier the better for me. Thank you very much if anyone might help. I can't get into cwm by connecting to computer or pressing power volume or the n. Help please

Can your nook boot from SD card at all? If so use the repart.img from the stock1.4.2 file on the raywaldo site.

If the sd card is in I can get to cwm. But there it's no more space on the card to put a Rom. It seems like the nook os is missing.

Once you boot into cwm, you can remove sdcard and put another one with zip file.
Cwm runs in ram.

Just looking at the first link,
You have a bad SD card or
SD card not formatted to fat32
Not on root of sdcard (as in no folders)
Bad SD tray (unreadable by phone)
Named wrong (remember windows sometimes hides extentions)
These are the only reasons your phone isn't finding the image
There really is no other reason your bootloader won't find the update, I would triple check info above and if you still can't get it you should be able to use fastboot instead

When you said bad SD Tray, did youi mean like phone only reads sd card when fully booted, cause my phone does read sdcard
Yup, if your phone reads it that's not the issue

Also i formatted my sdcard(2GB Micro SD) and put the pg06img.zip onto it but it didnt load, also tried with 8gb Sandisk, I have been trying to root this phone for over a week and have broke it with anger. It usually only takes me about 20mins to root a phone
Well these are the only reason this method won't work, but cnexus knows what he's doing so ask if you can just flash through fastboot
Should be
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip stockrom.zip
Or whatever you name it, just double check with him

I Feel Your Pain, Mine Is Also Un-Rootable
I bought a ZTE T81 4.4.2 and everytime I've tried to root "Your Phone Is Incompatible" or "Error Incompatibility Disconnecting Device" and its sad because all I want is a root explorer! I suppose at least I've more freedom then an apple device! APPLE SUCKS!

Personally, I had trouble booting & running SD cards. I'm convinced it wasn't hardware but my noobness! Since then I've always loaded only to emmc. I also had trouble going directly & straight to CM10 roms from the B&N 1.4whatever OS.
So, looking for a recovery + rom that matched, I used Indirect's app to get cwm 5, then had no trouble loading a CM9 rom (all to emmc). Once CM9 was up & running good, I used Goo Manager to load an updated TWRP recovery suitable for CM10, then Cm10.1, etc. That's what worked for me & to this day I see no need to boot from SD's. Just me tho.

I'm currently running carbon ROM on my nook 8gb via SD card. If I was to download an internal version of a ROM would I be able to reboot to my twrp recovery on my SD card and somehow flash to the internal harddrive from there?

Alright. Once I flash to internal from my SD android I'll be able to just remove the SD card and run straight off the nook itself?
Sent from my Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet using xda app-developers app
Yep, but once you flashed it will use the sdcard as default storage if you want to use the internal memory as default put this line in your build.prop under /system/build.prop (use root explorer or something like that)
persist.sys.vold.switchexternal 1
Paste it at the end of the file and you are done.

I've got a 16Gb SD card that I was trying to originally use but was having trouble setting up to do so. Could I just pop that in and use it for memory once I flash to internal? And also, if I was to back up my current build which is Carbon ROM, would I be able to restore to it once I flash to internal or would it not work since it was backed up through the SD build?
Sent from my Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet using xda app-developers app
Once you change your recovery you must immediately make a backup using it. One recovery cannot access backups made by another recovery.
