I'm currently trying it out. I bought the AT&T compatible sim from their website, and got the APN settings directly from them. Everything seems to work ok.
From what I have read you can get HSPA+ but not LTE when using the AT&T SIM on straight talk with the verizon note 2. Also in 4.3 there is no need to root to update the APN. Otherwise it works fine.
I was thinking about switching but after doing the math my verizon ETF eats all but $40 of the savings over the next 8 months until my contract ends. Will check it out again come September.

Correct. Our phones do have have the AT&T LTE bands. And actually being able to edit APN's was opened up on 4.1.2 without rooting but the thought is still correct.

I can only assume that if the phone has "AT&T" branded on the front, that at&t would work the best no?
You get the apn settings for straight talk?
If a device is unlocked..the AT&T on the front is now simply just there.

Yes your right. Once unlocked the brand doesn't mean anything. But it doesn't mean it will work on Verizon. Yes it will work on tmobile after some research and reconfiguring. But it doesn't mean it will work "better".
i717
Its not my phone it belongs to a friend of mine he asked me if I could fix it for him. Yes I got the APN settings from straightalk I got a 45$ card and put on the phone. Still no data. Think I will get a T-Mobile sim and a at&t sim and give them a shot.

I would check online both carriers coverage for your area also. One might not have lte or better coverage than the other.
maybe

Hmm....its possible. This phone needs some love and a little maintenance and some reconfiguration
You will need an activated sim from the carrier of choice. You cannot just change APN setting.

You need to know if you got an att or TMobile Sim from straight talk, since it's not working you probably got a TMobile one, that will require Sim unlocking and the addition of a TMobile compatible modem plus the proper TMobile straight talk apn info.

Yes I know, the APN settings have to match the carrier settings before it will work. I sold the i717 to a friend and that friend found someone else that is wanting to buy the phone (because the guy I sold it to can't get the phone to work properly) so hes not wanting it anymore. So the new buyer asked me if i could fix it back it was running ics but after i rooted it it took it down to GB 2.3.6 I THINK. I dont know maybe what im trying to say isnt making any sense sorry. The i717 was the first phone that i ever unlocked,the unlocking part was easy it was the flashing part that got me. I dont have the phone in my hands yet, im just trying to throw out what i remember. I will wait untill i have the i717 before i go any futher.

Will verizon s4 work on at&t. Will i be able to get 4g? Thanks
4G as in H+? Then yes.
No, they have different radios. GSM (AT&T) vs CDMA (Verizon)
JaeKay, the Verizon S4 had both radios. I have personally used an AT&T SIM and made calls and gotten H+. So to the OP, YES YOU CAN. You just need to add the APN info after you put in the new SIM card.

Need to root for APN change/add ? or possible to add new APN without rooting?
I was rooted but it should not be a requirement. Just need a non Verizon SIM in the phone.

A co worker of mine pulled a new S4 out of box and put in his at&t SIM sure enough it worked. so non rooted works too.

I have both a TMO sim and and ATT sim, and I got EDGE with TMO. No H/H+ right now on TMO because very few areas are on 1900. Our version of the S4 does not have the ability to use H/H+ on the AWS frequencies, just LTE.
Is there a way I can get my Verizon S4 to work with a Straight Talk AT&T SIM card?! Please say yes, so I can get rid of this expensive A$$ bill?!

Yes I'm using my at&t straight talk sim on the verizon s4 and it works great!
Is there anything special I have to do with my phone? When I order the sim card from straight talk it won't let me select the cdma option so, should I just select gsm as if I have a AT&T Galaxy S4?

CDMA does not use SIM cards. The S4 is a CDMA/GSM/LTE device. AT&T is a GSM network.
You might have to edit the APN settings to use Straight Talk.

The Verizon S4 is a CDMA phone AND a GSM phone. I believe they made it this way so you can go to about any other country in the world and still use your phone - or it was just cheaper to mass produce the radios with everything in it.
Anyway the only thing to change is the APN settings to
Name=Straight Talk
APN=att.mvno
Proxy=proxy.mvno.tracfone.com
Port=80
MMSC=http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy=mms2.tracfone.com
works perfect. However I did just find a small problem. I have flashed both cyanogenmod and Liquidsmooth AOSP ROMS and they do not work with at&t ST sim - when I call the phone it does not answer or register the call at all. Not sure what the problem is, seems like for some reason it is not registering with the at&t network. Trying to find a fix. However, the phone has worked fine with all TW based ROMS I've tried.
Ok thanks for the information but I have one more question... I am rooted with Clean Rom 1.5, do I have to unroot my phone? Will I still be able use wife tether or foxfi? I heard AT&T took foxfi away.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
Oops just saw that you messaged me - yes just choose GSM. You do not have to unroot your phone but like I said in the last post - I cannot get AOSP roms to receive or make calls - data works - but not phone calls - which is rather strange and I'm sure can be fixed but nothing I have tried seems to work.
GSM is fine but in reality once you get the right LTE bands turned on, would it be better in global?

What kind of data do you see on AT&T? HSPA+? 3G? 2G?

You shouldn't need to flash to Straight Talk as the Verizon S4 already has an unlocked SIM slot and compatible radios with AT&T and T-Mobile (re-farmed markets) 3G. All you need to do is order a SIM card from them and then enter the APN information for Straight Talk and set the phone for GSM mode. The AT&T SIM card is probably a better choice since some T-Mobile markets still only use AWS for 3G which the Verizon S4 does not support.
I'm a new when it comes to this. But if I have a bad ESN Verizon note 2. Can I use it on straight talk at&t with no problems. Cuz the ESN is only banned from verizon?
Also. When using it on straight talk at&t I'd still use Verizon based roms and radios? Just straight talks correct APN settings for data to come in.
Do I need a special ROM to get rid of the this isn't a Verizon Sim card stuff.

I thought they shared banned ESNs between each other? I thought that is why most people either sell it here with a note of bad esn or ship it over across seas.
I purchased a used Verizon Galaxy Note II knowing it had a bad ESN - planning to use it as wifi only. One day decided to try and see if a AT&T gophone sim would work. Don't know about the plan you're addressing - but AT&T absolutely activated the gophone sim. What I think AT&T will not do is activate if the phone's IMEI shows its stolen - but the previous owner not paying his/her bill to Verizon didn't seem to be a problem. Just my personal experience - not a universal, guaranteed answer
It works for me. I installed CM11 on my note and it worked like a champ!
Here's my next question is I'm going at&t st with this Verizon note. Now when I flash clean ROM. Old ROM I like. Do I use at&t network or verizon. Either way I know I have to manually input apn settings.
Am I better off using at&t Roms?...

because its a verizon device use a verizon rom, dont use at&t rom it may brick your device.
I agree with Bonkurei. Stick with Verizon Roms. Do NOT try the at&t roms.Stick with Verizon roms and you will be fine.
I agree run custom roms with Verizon settings

Better to buy I Verizon phone off the street to use with AT&T than an AT&T branded phone. Never know when you might wake up to "we're sorry, but this device has been blocked" lol nice insurance scams

Shot answer yes it will work with no issues, as long as the custom rom allows you to edit apns you will be golden, to get rid of the pesky non verizon sim message, either freeze the Samsung setup wizard apk with titanium backup or delete it all together. I have my Verizon note 2 on ST. I've been running beans 22 and have ad no issues at all. Also when choosing your network choose at&t, Verizon's won't work

Looks like you got an answer. However, carriers do share the ESN and IMEI numbers for devices and check for blacklisted devices. Prepaid plans may be a different matter, but I'd be willing to bet that they wouldn't activate it on any contract plans and you'll not get any kind of warranty on the device. So, if you break it, lose it, or brick it, you'll have to pay full price for the device. Probably would have been cheaper to pay your bill...
