Trouble setting up VPN on Android. - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone, I looked around and have never came close to finding something remotely similar to this so I might as well just post it here.
I'm trying to set up the hamachi VPN on my android in hopes I'll be able to use ES file explorer to access my computer files SMB from anywhere since it worked with a friends computer to mine, I don't see why I can't apply the same principal there so I might as well try.
Anyway, it sends me the certificates in an email, I install them, turn on VPN, forces a passcode and yada, yada, yada,
The problem is save is always greyed out and it's become frustrating. I mean Hamachi gives you screen shots of what to insert the settings. It should be that simple, enter the credentials and hit save. But no. It's grey and not letting me save and I have no idea why.
Could be something simple but I couldn't find a solution. I've only seen like 2 webpages related to hamachi on android period.
Thanks in advance for the assistance,

I'm actually trying to do the same on my S4 with 4.3 os and I'm not even able to install the certificates. I got 3 of them in the email, hamachi.pfx, hamachiIntCA.crt and hamachiRootCA.crt and when I try to open them the system is asking me which program I want to open them in. Not quiet sure if it's just my handheld's settings but the instructions from Logmein state to just open them and they will istall automatically.
TIA

Actually I got everything installed, just had a brain spazm before. LOL
Save is grayed out if you don't select a certificate for user and server. As soon as you select those from drop-down, save becomes available.
Now my only issue is it's not connecting, need to figure out what's going on.

[Q] ES File Explorer set-up

I've installed ES File Explorer on my Prime under the impression it will let me browse my shared files and folders on my laptop. So I go to the 'LAN Shares' page in ES and run a scan. My laptop shows up, but when I click on it I get the error 'Login failure. Try new user name/password?' Thing is, I don't have a password on my laptop... so how do I get around this?
Also, on Windows 7 how do I make sure I'm properly set-up for file sharing?
I think you just right click on c or your doc folder and you see sharing options. ES is working great for me. I do believe you have to make the computer open to the world, so remember to stop sharing if it is a laptop you take away from home.
when on the main ES explorer screen...
1. swipe your finger to the left..
2. add a "server" in this case your PC IP address with user/passwd if needed
3. if any shares are available on your PC they will get listed right away...
hope it helps.

Yes I've done that, but my problem is that I don't have a username or password on my laptop but ES keeps asking for it!
Create a user on the laptop called share with the password share or something.
Then give the diesired folder access-rights to this user.

Well yes but I'd rather not have to put a password in everytime I boot windows. There must be a way to get this working without having to set up a user account in windows...?

How did u created the shares?
Is the "everyone" group listed as having access rights on the "Shared" folders you're sharing?
I don't think you understand. Your username is literally your user name. It's your user account. If you don't have a password for your user account, you still need to enter the "login name" for your user account whether it be the default "Administrator" or "User" and leave the password field empty.
My user name in Windows is buymecar. My login password is ilovexda. You get where I'm going with this?

make sure you turn off password protection for shares in...
but you can always set a password, and set window to auto login buy running "control userpasswords2"

Right.... and make sure that "Anonymous" has rights to access the shares. That will be under your Local Policy settings if you want to go that deep.
Okay got it working, thanks for the help guys. The problem was that all my media is on an external hard drive. In case anyone else has this problem and stumbles upon this thread, here's what I did:
1. Right clicked the external hdd and went to sharing tab. At the bottom it said that I had password protection on, so I followed the instructions there to disable it.
2. The 'Share' button in the sharing tab was greyed out so I had to go into advanced sharing and check 'Share this folder'.
3. I then went into the security tab of the properties pane and gave my user account all permissions. My user account is the only account and therefore has admin rights, so I don't know why I had to do this.
4. I then created a new username called 'everyone', and gave it all permissions.
5. Clicked okay and close, and I could then access it via ES on my prime.
The reason I didn't mention the hdd in the OP is because at that point I couldn't access the laptop at all. Once I did the above everything worked. I think having password protection on was preventing me from getting into my laptop at all, as I don't have any passwords in windows.
Thanks for the help! I now have access to all my media on my prime. Good times.
EDIT. Turns out the username 'everyone' doesn't need all permissions. I didn't like the idea of 'everyone' having full control over my hdd so I changed the permissions to just allow reading and writing, no modifying etc. Still works.
Cool beans....
What kind of data transfer rates are normal for transfer between two wireless devices? Wireless G that is. Both devices are very close to the router. I should be able to stream 720p video comfortably right? But it doesn't seem to keep up.
Is there a way of testing this speed?

There is currently no tablet app that I know of that test speed (wifi analyzers scan wifi signal strength) but speedtest app can test you internet connection. For local speed, you can transfer a big file and look at the transfer rate. Ideally, the between 1-2 meters away for the router is the best.
"When testing throughput do it ~1 meter from the AP and test between a wireless client and a wired client. Doing it far away/behind walls/downstairs/etc will have reduced rates and is a different problem to solve. Being extremely close can lower performance by overloading the receiver" -dd-wrt.com
Wireless G is 54 Mbits/s but real world test is ~22 Mbits/s down and ~2.5 Mbit/s....720p streams at 2.5 Mbit/s (for VC-1 and lower formats) up to 5Mbit/s (for H.264 and better quality formats) so it depends on a lot of things. Short answer yes. BUT if you source is on wifi too rather than LAN then there is a high chance that it won't be smooth. Also depending on whether you are the only one connected, the router brand, how good your source is, etc. 720p on 802.11g is hit and miss (mostly miss) so consider a wireless N 300M/bits router
All this can be found on google (feel free to correct me) and please click THANKS if this helped you.
That makes a lot of sense. The file I've been using is a high quality .mkv file, so that's probably the issue.
google is great, here are some good resources for a beginner:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-7/share-files-and-printers-between-windows-7-and-xp/
http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/wi...-windows-7-with-the-shared-folder-wizard/3180
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/7412-guest-account-turn-off.html
If you do use a password ES has problems with non alphanumeric characters sometimes.
ES gives access to network shares by buffering the files via an internal webserver, this means it significantly reduces performance. If you want to watch HD mkv's I would recommend using CifsManager:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1442928&highlight=cifsmanager
I use it with MX player or Dice and have no issues watching 1080 mkv movies over wireless g if I'm not too far from the access point.
---------- Post added at 08:24 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:20 PM ----------
As a note "not to far" is roughly upto about 35 feet for G or 50 for N for me with 1080.
Even if you move to wireless N, ES file explorer will not perform as well as CifsManager with HD videos.
Never share your OS drive. Just share a folder(s) that are on your OS drive. Give anonymous access to these particular folders, so when any client that looks for shared folders they will see these folders there. Shouldn't have to input any log in information at all.
breakshift, I am trying also to access my external hdd on my Prime. I followed your steps, but still cannot determine the correct username and password combination. What did you end up using?
Well since I did what I described in that post, it all works. Are you able to connect to the computer at all? Or is it just when you try to go into the HDD it refuses you?
ES doesn't ask for a username or password at all for me anymore. Does it prompt you for that info? If so, do you have a password set up on your user account on your computer?
When I try to watch videos using es file explorer on mg galaxy s2, sometimes it connects and sometimes it doesn't. If I restart my desktop pc, it will work for about half an hour then fail to login again.
This is what I'm always getting, https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B90aBBkpJZ8tS3NINU9fbDBDUzA/edit would appreciate it someone can help.
I'm using windows 7 pro 64bit
Everyone else in my family can stream the shared files with their windows laptop.
After restarting my computer(the pc with the shared files), my brother and I can stream for about 30 minutes, then I have to restart my pc again.
I have a password on my pc, but even when I put it in the edit server options it still doesn't work. I'm thinking it may be a firewall or router setting?

Torque Pro OBD app and data logging

So i got myself an OBD bluetooth scanner and the Torque app...bloody brilliant.
So much information!
anyway, i cant seem to get it to upload data logs to the web viewer?
i have my account created and setup correctly but nothing in the web viewer when i log in.
Does anyone use the app and have any ideas on how to get this to work?
Secondary i have e-mailed myself some data logs and cant get them to open properly?
I cant seem to get Track Recorder to work with Torque Sync software, it stucks at Searching for Torque

I imagine the particular posters have found answers to their problems seeing as this thread
dates from 2014 but I thought it might be worthwhile answering all the same as I ran in to the same niggles when I began using this app so if anyone searching these issues subsequently may find some worth from my reply.
First of all as a far as experience and knowledge is concerned. Firstly with cars;fixing, modifying, engine management tuning, obd2, diagnostics. Basically my auto knowledge is extremely wide and extensive from approx 35 years of obsession and getting stuck in an the deep end whereas my knowledge and experience of computers and smart phone tech is on much, much shakier ground
In fact, for those of my vintage. i.e late 30s,early 40s remember when we were kids. and programmable VCRs were the height of cutting edga technology. Well I'm like the way our parents and grand parents were then. i.e pretty much baffled by it and even following the instructions it was hit and miss whether you actually managed to record that film rhat was on at 4am lol.
So for the second issue brought up by the OP it doesn't matter whether you email yourself the log file or not (I found the few times i tried it that the file wouldn't attach and when it did the problem was the same anyway) you need Microsoft Office or any other type of office suite to view the files. On the pc i have Microsoft office but had to download an app to my phone to view. csv files. Again an office suite that not only displays. csv files but puts them into a spreadsheet format is required.
As for the first issue it's preferable in every way to view the site. on a pc because on the phone display the actual box to sign into is off screen and takes a little bit of zooming out and seaching to find, the same goes after you have signed in when another box appears with a list of the logs files recorded and the tab to choose it. This is where my lack of fundamental computer/web knowledge comes in. I can't tell you why it doesn't sit nicely inti an easily accessible mobile format but it doesn't. Once you've found the first sign in box/pop up it becomes simple, annoying but simple.
As for there being nothing after signing into the webview site successfully all I can assume is either you've no log files to view which you should have if it's all been set up correctly, including choosing which PIDs to send to logfile or the pop up/window where you click on your logfiles is right off screen and has to be looked for. Of course you don't get that problem if accessed using your desktop.

[Q] cannot make HD6's bluetooth NON-discoverable

mentioned as a sort of derail in this older post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=58810816&postcount=3
but no replies so just wanted to re-post with a specific, appropriate subject line.
so, supposedly I should be able to go into settings->wireless->bluetooth and change the "bluetooth name" of the device, and also choose discoverable on/off/timeout.
a. can't change the name of the device; there's no sort of default name shown, and when I tap the left side of the very first line, all I get is bluetooth turns on.
2. turning bluetooth on makes it permanently discoverable, no options to disable or set a time out. if I try tapping the left side of the first line, all that happens is BT shuts off.
is this pure pilot error? does this work / not-work for others?
I have the 4.5.3 update installed.
one thing I wonder about, is that I did disable a bunch of safe-seeming Amazon packages (check out the other thread about PM blocking) including the launcher and some other things. seems unlikely this would have any effect, but in the worst case I can try unblocking stuff and see.
also, haven't been able to find any realy mention on xda or google, but might as well ask: does anyone know if PM or AM are able to manipulate bluetooth settings?
also also, getprop shows:
[net.bt.name]: [Android]
net.hostname = kindle-blahblahgibberish (the usual)
(even weirder, when I pair it with a win7 PC, it shows up as the custom name I put in settings->device options->"change your fire's name")
and the bluetooth settings page still shows none of the above, zero name at all.
again, is this all normal behavior? it's kind of a security flaw (yes, I was still required to enter a PIN on the keyboard, which is good, but there are other ways permanently-discoverable can be bad.)
Don't have your device, so can't say how bluetooth shd work, but as far as blocking I wonder if the debloater tool by @gatesjunior will work with your device. No root required on KitKat, (but of course Sangria is very different.) If it works, it'll show you everything you blocked, let you easily unblock some or all, and also find out if you can pm block bluetooth.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/debloater-remove-carrier-bloat-t2998294
thanks, but I may have already heard of that one...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=58820407&postcount=6
and if it somehow wasn't clear, I'm NOT trying to block bluetooth. otherwise I could simply leave it turned off to same effect.

nah, I was just having a laugh, no worries. I was actually glad you posted it because that program is so seriously friggin' useful, the more people know it will work with their firehd, the better.
like, if my lazy carcass ever gets around to trying re-enabling stuff I've blocked and see if that changes anything in the BT settings, I can do it one by one, but first export/save the list of blocked stuff - so much easier to import/restore the saved blocklist file, instead of writing it down or trying to remember.

Firefox OS as an embedded email reader?

Greetings,
At my office, we rotate after-hours email monitoring but some of the older guys are apprehensive about getting cell phones, so keeping up on-the-go can be difficult. I am wondering about buying a ZTE Open off of ebay and getting a pay/mb data plan and we can pass that around as a dedicated email reader.
Up to that point, there is nothing to worry about, but what I am thinking of playing around with is cutting the OS down to only the email app and settings. I'd like to have it boot directly to email with settings available from the pull-down menu, if possible. I mainly want to keep it simple enough for cellular-phobic people and also take away the ability to browse the web and run up my cellphone bill.
I'm not super fluent in the in's and out's of FXOS beyond the app level, but I'm interested poking around, I'm just looking to gauge the difficulty. There are cheaper android devices that I could try with as well, but I'd much rather hack around in HTML/JS than Java. That being said, I have the option of just customizing the Andriod UI to remove everything except the mail app, so if tearing down the Firefox UI would be a lot of work, I'll just do that.
I have a Flame that I can run tests on before spending any money, but I appreciate your opinions before a throw away a bunch of time that could be used on something useful.
John
That's super doable and not very difficult I think! Only with one (obvious?) condition: you must have full root access to your device. ZTE gives a rooting tool, so if you stick with the Open C (or the flame) you should be good to go. Don't choose a Kliff for example, as they are not rootable yet.
First of all, stripping all of gaia (the top layer of firefox OS, containing all the UI) has already been done by JanOS (for IoT device), so you can get inspiration from them. They reduced it to only one js file and a folder, where you can put your own js that gets executed at startup. Your use case is a bit more complex though: you still want to access settings, and be able to go back to email when needed. Basically, you need the email app to replace the homescreen right?
Creating alternate homescreen is a possibility that firefox os gives you, see https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Apps/Build/Manifest#role
You can try adding the role "homescreen" to the email app, flash your device, change the homescreen in the settings and see what happens!
NB: when you change the manifest of an internal apps, you might need to rehash it by downloading https://github.com/julienw/config-files/blob/master/addpref and execute
Code:
./addpref rehash-manifest
while your device is connected (and usb debugging is on).
You might need to add handler in the email for the home button to work correctly, in a similar fashion as in verticalhome (which is the name of the folder containing the homescreen app, not "homescreen").
Good luck! Don't hesitate to ping me if you need any help.

Securly for Chromebook bypass?

At my school, we have Chromebooks and a service/extension called securly. Me and my buddies have been trying to bypass it since it was first introduced last year. We are cool with the tech teacher and we have been trying to get passed him for a long time.
Any help on bypassing securly?
Note, inspect element has been blocked along with all extensions except for some adblockers. You can also only sign in on our district accounts. I do not want to powerwash it nor uninroll it(if that's how you spell it haha)
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks
Gavin
My buddies and I. Unenroll. Spend less time on youtube, more time learning...
Kinda have the same situation with my Technology Director at my High school, Still cant figure it out.
I Have an understanding that we have to un-enroll to bypass the extension because you can't just "Uninstall" a forced extension on a managed Chromebook.
And on top of that, Google's patched all the forced enrollment bypasses, so its pretty much impossible right now unless you literally replace parts on the computer.
all you have to do is open a console (default chrome: ctrl+shift+j) and put this code in: var a=true;while(a){alert(a);}
then hit enter. when the msg box appears, click the check box that says "prevent this page from showing additional diologs" (or something like that)
your filter should be disabled until you restart.

Solution
I have found a way that there is no way to prevent: open task manager with search+escape and disable the securly task. It's kind of finicky though, as it only gives you like 2 second of freedom and sometimes reloads all of your tabs, but if you load a blocked page it won't kick in unless you click a link to a different place on the page.
Also, if you want to un-enroll the chromebook from enterprise manegment, I would suggest buying an m-sata ssd and pulling the one that's in the chromebook out and putting the bought one in until you turn it in at the end of the year. the fresh one won't have enterprise managment on it.
Hope this helps!
Might have a solution?
Hey Rootaholic, I may have found a way, first, go into your extensions tab and at the top of the page click the box that says "Developer Mode", then go down to the Securly extension and click Background Page, then go into the network tab, it's recording, stop the recording and click the box right next to Offline, this may work but I don't have Securly on my Chromebook so your mileage may vary depending on however the filtering is done.
I have tried the development mode and it didn't work please help me with my problem

Hmm, well problem is if I want to work on this find any security holes, then I need Securly, but I don't have Securly at all, so sorry but I don't have ideas at the moment. Sorry
Hey, my school has the same problem. But my friend found a bypass:
Go to a site that is blocked and copy and paste a the site's url into your browser. Then press the search key and escape key (it will open the Task Manager). Very quickly end the task "Securely" and press enter to go to the site in the search bar (the link you copy and pasted in the search bar).
You can access any site.
If you have any questions just ask.
Good Luck.

All of these methods have been patched at my school district, don't know about others tho.
restart chromebook, wifi off, chrome://inspect, go to other, wait for oobe locke, click it, go to application, click rea more about the web manifest, and it opens an incognito tab
If you change the language of the website it works
Nothing works!
I've tried everything (except the ssd idea- hope to do that soon!), and nothing works. I can't end securly processes (blocked), I can't open a console (ctrl-shift-j doesn't work and ctrl-alt-t, the developer shell, is blocked), and developer mode (both for extensions and chromebook itself) is blocked. :crying:
My friends have found a way to block securely all you have to do is go to the chrome web store, click on extensions and then search VPS it will keep you connected to your regular WiFi but it will change your location to make it seem like your in Mexico or something. There is another detention that my friends use but they won't tell me what it is. Because if you know a securely hack than you're in an exclusive club. Hope this helps.
I found a bypass 4 inspect element BUT I FORGOT it. we were messing around and i finally got it and closed out my securely with window.close () on chrome://inspect//extensions. Oh ya the whole school could use inspect too i do not know what my friend did but they found out in 1 hr xD

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

I don't know why but everytime my school computer crashes it disables the securly extension until I reboot the computer.
same tho
securly is worthless and pointless it blocks music that is allowed at school and not the videos it should
Same Issue!
I am experiencing the same thing at my school. I am using the blocked chromebook right now to say this.
I was smart enough to figure out how to bypass things on these chromebooks because I do somewhat a lot of coding and other things similar to that.
There is an extension called 'Unblock Everything' on the chrome web store and when you click it, it allows you to go on whatever blocked website on here. When you get it, there will be yellow and black colors on the extension logo so when you see it, get it.
Next thing is I would use that to go on YouTube to find tutorials on getting Inspect Element on a BLOCKED chromebook. I would use that to edit things I did on quizzes in Google Classroom.
There would be things like Episode Interactive that would be blocked so I use this to code on there and to go to links like these!
I hope this helped a lot!
P.S. There are many other tutorials to unblocking different things so if you could find those, please share them with me! Hope I was helpful!
The "End Process" button is faded oml why
