Wish of next xmas? - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Dear Sony,
You have ALMOST created the phone of my dreams!
If only you had added a flash (torch super useful) a removable battery - I may want to add an extended one in the future, or a new one after a few months coz im paranoid like that.. but above all, because I want to feel like my phone is MY phone and I want to be able to do whatever I want with it. Lastly, an IR blaster would be the cherry on the cake to use as a remote for everything.
Just these 3 OBVIOUS things would have made this without doubt the BEST EVER phone.. oh well
Please make my wish come true by next Xmas?

I don't want any of those.....
My only wish list... 13mp camera or better... I understand that this will mean a thicker device..... so yeah... thats a tough one!
Any thinker and the device would lose its appeal. (most of you will understand... a thick 6 1/2 device any thicker would be quite cumbersome)

wish list
if there was a case with an integrated LED as light

13mp camera or better does not make sense since MP does not automatically means better IQ.
A more accurate statement would have been "13mp camera or MORE".
I do not use my phone as my camera but in reality if it was a BETTER quality lens, sensor, etc , 8PM would be great. More MP to keep it from getting noisier means bigger sensor etc, and bigger phone so its always a trade off I guess.
I would like the flash to use as flashlight though. :good:
Removable battery would be the one factor for me...for sure I would love that.
And maybe it will have that new Tegra K1 chip if its as good as the hype around it.

That's exactly what you said was wrong with my statement. An increase of megapixels doesn't Denote a better image. But 13mp "or better" surely suggests a 'better' image.

GS4 vs GS4 active?

I planned to wait for the release of the GS4 active, because the original GS4 proved to be very fragile. I do not want to be forced to use a bulky case and the GS4 failed multiple drop tests when compared to the iPhone 5 and its predecessor, the Galaxy S3. According to the rumor mill, the GS4 active will be a inferior to the original GS4. With rumors floating around that it will only have a dual core processor and an 8 megapixel camera, I am not inclined to buy this phone. What are your thoughts? Do you believe that these rumors hold any truth?
Its not rumor. There has been a video posted of the phone. Those specs are true.

I think the active is meant to be rugged and banged up a bit.... amazing specs isnt the market they are targeting.

It's more like a rugged S3/S4 mix, if it were a true rugged S4 it would be without question the phone I'd get, but I prefer high-spec.

This is my way of thinking. The video leaked shows a dual-core, which is sad. I'd gladly buy the phone if it was basically an S4 with better bodywork.
Heck, I'd even buy it if it were waterproof =P
It's a shame, I was looking forward to this. Guess I'll just end up with a standard S4 and an Otterbox.

I can't wait to see the S4 Active, my dad needs this phone lol.
I may be bashed for saying this but i don't understand why one would buy a high tech phone and then wanting it full protection. If if you buy this phone you should take care of it (I understand a drop may happen to anybody) but still...is like buying a ferrari and wanting to put rugged tires and take it to a rally race

People use their phones every day. Often times people need/want to use their phone in the rain, or perhaps it drops in the puddle, there's a hundred reasons why having a water resistant phone is a good thing for most people.
Saw the official announcement from Samsung on the S4 active. Specs look comparable to the S4 except for the camera. Im hoping the Active will be on Vz by July.

the camera is most likely (don't know for sure but suspecting...) BETTER than the S4.
I've read they increased S4 to 13mp without increasing sensors size.
You've all seen the threads on blurry pics at night, right? One reason why? 13 megapixels, same optics.
More megapixels needs more light. Same light, lower brightness for each pixel. Plus that's a huge file and I doubt the sharpness will really increase with extra megapixels on a phone camera.
I'd rather Samsung use its experience with cameras and optics to provide a REAL increase in image quality via bigger/better sensor, optical image stabilization, etc. Although I just read HDR video came to S4 which is pretty darn cool. And there will be S4 Zoom with an actual zoom lens, also darn cool. That's what I'm talking about. One other thing I wish all phones had was a friggin' lens cover for the camera. Just a little thing that would slide over, maybe not even mechanical, just a little door users could close over it or something. Or at the least I wish case manufacturers would include this, something that slid or buttoned over it. Now I have to use tape.
Anyway, bottom line -- I think the Active camera will be BETTER especially at night..
All specs are actually better. It has an LCD screen which will be much better for a lot of reasons. MUCH brighter, accurate color, no pentile, etc. Work under water, as well as the camera working under water, in the rain, etc. And my fav-- hard buttons.
I'm going to start a thread on Verizon forums on this and try to get in touch with their corporate people to see if I can convince them to bring the S4 Active to Verizon. If they come out with it, i'll buy it off contract in a second!!!!
There is so much misinformation in this post.

Megapixel count has nothing to do with how much light they need. It's the sensor that determines how much light is needed. The reason some higher megapixel cameras look worse at night is with the ISO boost you get more grain that is more dispersed across the greater pixel count.
The most important factor in low light performance is sensor size.
And yes, sharpness will absolutely increase with 13mp vs. 8. You have 50% more detail. Keep in mind this really only matters if you are blowing up images on PRINT (it own't make a difference on a 1080p TV since a 2MP image produces a 1920x1080 image, appx.) or if you happen to have a 4k TV

It won't be. The S4 has a better camera, period. The S4 Active uses the same camera as on the Galaxy S3 which is a very good camera, but not as good as that on the S4. From what I have read, they are having supply issues with the S4 camera and want to keep their supply available to build into regular S4's.

Brightness is better but the contrast ratio isn't as good and the blacks aren't as good. This is not a pure win, it's going to be subjective. AMOLED will also have better battery life.

I think it looks like a great phone. I don't know if it's more rugger in terms of drop capabilities - but the waterproof is very cool. I am an avid skier and would love a waterproof phone. Even to use a phone in the rain without worrying about it is nice.

While you're right in most of what you've said, the way you explained it would make the average user think in blanket terms. Higher megapixel count *does*, in fact, require more light to achieve the same results (in terms of stops of light). The larger the sensor, the less light needed to perfectly meter the shot...but with the same size sensor, the higher megapixel sensor will require more light. That part was not incorrect.
In terms of the actual sensor in the Active, nobody knows what it is. You can't say "it's the sensor from the S3", because not even the review sites have any idea at this point. All that we know is that the Active will have an 8MP sensor...assuming that the sensor is the same size as the one in the S4 (there's no reason not to), it potentially could take better shots. Again, that assumes they won't just switch to a smaller 8MP sensor...but if they don't then this thing could be a great camera for low-light shots, since it'll have wonderful sensor pixel density.
I agree with you on the screen. All other factors aside, I'd rather have an LCD than AMOLED. Being able to see the screen during the daytime on an AMOLED is borderline impossible. Yes, the blacks are a little brighter and the contrast is minutely lower...but AMOLED also has its own share of negatives -- the primary being that the saturation is blown through the roof on most of them, completely destroying color balance and realism in pictures.
To the last point...the biggest thing about this phone is that you just don't have to worry about it as much. While most phones today could be used in the rain without issue (seriously...devices today are made to be pretty resilient on their own), this thing could be used in a downpour. It's less important for when you're actually talking on it and more so when it might be in your pocket and it's being covered in water. With a waterproof device, getting caught in a rainstorm isn't as big a deal because the phone won't have a problem with it. That's *HUGE*.
As long as the screen doesn't look like the one on the xperia z from the waterproofing...

Photo comparison: Ultra Z vs Nex-6 vs ZGPAX vs Finepix 2650

So I was going to test my Smartwatch ZGPAX S5 vs an old Fuji Finepix 2650 (2MP) and decided to just test the Xperia Z as well and use the NEX-6 as the control image if you will.
Nothing scientific..just me wasting some time for a quick experiment!
The images have been named to identify the device and which APP was used to take the image as well.
This is under a normal room lightning condition as going into even lower light levels I do not expect miracles from any of them aside from the NEX.
I did a quicker test before taking a pic of a violin on a wall and on that test the Xperia really looked bad so I would have to do that again to confirm if that is the case. In fact, it looked so bad that I was expecting it to be one of the worst during this Cobra Commander test but it was not. I think the A Better Camera did the best job for the Xperia although closely followed by Camera Zoom.
Regards
PS Just in case, after you click on the small preview to open the new window, you can click on it again for the full size image if you want to compare all the detail.
I am not camera veteran / expert
Can you make conclusion to average user ?
Thanks
That's kind of an unfair test. The NEX (which I own and love) is a DSL class camera for semipros. The rest including the ZU (which I own and love too) is kiddie stuff in comparison. I mean, the Finepix is from 2003

hahah the NEX-6 was more of the Control image to see which one got closer to it
I would say if you want to improve the low light performance of the Ultra slightly from the horrible compression of the stock camera, either go with A Better Camera or ProCapture. Pro Capture has a noise reduction option which takes a couple of images and processes them, and there is something similar on A Better Camera as well.
Or get a NEX camera if you really are serious about your photos :victory:
i wasn't too serious either but getting a NEX is good advice anyway. best camera i ever had, including several large canons. you won't shoot a vogue cover with it but for everything else there's IMHO no better price-performance-ratio.
Oh yes, the NEX lineup is outstanding. I have seen some pros mixing their PRO camera pics with the NEX and you cant really tell which is which ...quite impressive!
BTW, I just tested a HTC Amaze with the 8MP camera which when it came out seem to have been received positively and dare I say the Ultra actually looks better!
Testing without the flash benefit of course which is sort of cheating I guess lol
UPDATE:
Just added the HTC Amaze also an 8MP camera.
Just a small update.
Added another pic with stock camera but ISO 50 and I will say, it looks pretty good to me. In fact, when its possible to use that type of ISO without blurring the image, I would go for the stock camera.

Pocket Now Axon 7 Camera Review

In this review the quality of the camera seems really good for the price, what do you think ?

Seems he put alot of into the manual customization and got a good product. Seems like the low light camera as is, is pretty much a lost cause. Nothing too new

I don't know if i would call it good for the price. It is a strange choice of camera sensor which seems like it was some kind of Samsung R&D experiment that didn't go quite right. The camera performs fine in prefect conditions, but the low light, the lens flaring, the AF hunt and slow re-focus, HDR ghosting, bad OIS, worse EIS... i hope it's software correctable but i don't think ZTE will put that much work into fixing it and I don't expect Samsung to help either (not in their interest). It has good manual controls except the focus locking, but that means you are bound to miss some shots or walk away with blur. Shame considering other specs, but camera is a big part of the phone now, it's probably the 3rd most reviewed feature after performance and design
Get a G5 if you care about the camera a lot. You can get them for $400 mint condition on ebay easily and the camera is pretty good. Not S7 good but close to second best.

I would probably get HTC10 in that case, not a fan of LG. I am at this point waiting to see what new nexii will look like.
I agree that the G5 is also a good deal considering the price drop, but as I'm going to China next month I'm looking for the perfect chinese phone...
And yes, camera is an important feature of phones now.

Worth getting over a s8?

So I'm in need of a new phone. Right now I'm using a redmi note 4 with custom roms.
What I'm looking for is a nice camera for the price, good speed for at least 2 years and nice design. Also custom roms
Is this worth getting at 350 euro for the 128gb against a S8 64gb 380 Euro. There's also the s7 edge at 200 euro. The s8 is used and I don't have any guarantee that they have not change somethings (like replacing display etc)

No not often but it can happen. It's not really a deal breaker but the S8 I would say is the better phone because it's made by a better company, has a better screen (though smaller than the Poco) better 3rd party support. Yes the SOC is older than the SD845 bit all depends on what you want from a phone. I brought the Poco mainly because it has a headphone jack, a card slot and was in the price bracket of what I could afford and didn't want to buy a second hand phone
I replaced my s8 for the poco, the camera is decent if you use Gcam but of course is worse than the s8.
The battery life and the modding possibility are much better but you should decide what are you looking for in a phone before buying it.
The Samsung water resistance, wireless charging, amoled and NFC are hard to turn down, but a new F1 still wins in my book - bigger battery, better SoC, plus it's new
If you're looking for a camera phone, best look elsewhere. Not to say that the camera is bad, but do note this does not have OIS, only EIS. So if you have shaky hands you best use a camera stand or take multiple shots (it's easy to do that just hold the camera button). I have had good shots with this phone and I'm satisfied with it (since I don't care much about cam quality, I'm after the SD845, though the shots i took were ok for my tastes).
As said, if you're gonna use your phone for amateur photog, you need steady hands and possibly a stand, but for the price, the camera is great.
If you badly need an amazing camera, look at the s8 or possibly oneplus, but the Pocophone cam is decent. You can google some shots taken by other users for reference. Here is one I took from my dim room and see if it suits your needs.

To tell the truth I might take 10-15 pic a year so yeah not much of a camera guy. The reason I ask about the camera is because I'm a programmer and need some pics of my workflow so I though might as well take them with my new phone.
I will go for this only for the reason from where I am people here sell refurbished phones without saying it. A refurbished S8 (it might be) is worthless against a new phone. Also Xiomi is kind of known for custom roms.
ps: to the one saying S8 has better community. From what I could tell on xda the s8 didn't have much compared to xiomi phones ( I compared it to my note 4)
I have s8, s9+ and poco. Poco has the worst screen of all but not by that much comparing to s8, since it can be very bright and its viewing angles are fine. The camera using the gcam is adequate, better that stock s8, worst than s9+, but again it is adequate.
Performance is better on the poco, talking about daily activities at least, is more fluid and fast. Overall quality, is surprisingly adequate on poco, and since we all use case on our phones, more premium devices like the s8/s9 will brag a bit less. Last but not the least, unlocking the bootloader does not void the warranty for the poco, but its a different case for the samsungs.

Since you mention performance, does androud stutter still occurs in flagships like poco f1? Like literally every android I had in hand (not many flagships though) has some kind of lag sometime.
Nope I would sell this for a s8 because it lacks so many features
Bad eis
No ois
No 60 fps in any mode
It's screen doesn't support real hdr its just plastic looking with very innaccurate colors.
The only purpose in upgrading would be the processor.
I think the only differences in this phone is that
The official dev community and the xda community are very active like posts each day.
But if you really want a phone for pubg this phone can handle it at hdr 60 fps 720p mode. It's viewing angles and lighting are about 75% of what you would get with an oled panel.

For me, I haven't experienced any lags. I'm on pie now btw. My only issue is for some reason they removed the system option to hide the notch(not really an issue since I use nacho notch a 3rd party app to remove notch). Everything works fine for me. I can run simultaneous programs with no lags, I can play heavy games with no stutters and the rom community is amazing.
As for your camera usage, it takes clear pictures and is sufficient enough (I use it sparingly since I'm not a picture buff). I use it sometimes for document scanning and it's clear enough to show the letters in the docs. For selfie and family pics, it's nice and adequate, though you shouldn't compare it to phones who specifically target photo buffs since the main point of poco is SD845 and I can say it's fast and smooth. Though as mentioned photog is good and adequate to take clear photos for normal use
Some people say there are issues but I haven't experienced any of them at all. No touch lag, no screen bleed and the Poco team really has good aftersales since they respond and really converse with their consumers (see xiaomi forum app about latest updates with Poco and you will see they do acknowledge most of the issues, unlike some manufacturers). I'd say for the price it is a snatch and I do hope they launch more of these "flagship killers"
Almsot forgot, there is one more thing you should be wary of, the notifications. I think you already know this but notifications do not stay in the status bar, so if I were you, use this mod. It moves the clock up a bit sk that the notifications will stay below it:
https://mi-globe.com/miui-notch-notification-mod/?codename=beryllium
And for more info
https://mi-globe.com/miui-notification-icons-for-notch-phones/
I would always recommend buying anything other than Samsung but as a Poco user my advice is, skip both and buy Oneplus 6, if you can find it somewhere affordable

What's next?

Hello,
I've had every pixel since launch and, whilst the phones have been underwhelming, I absolutely love the point and shoot camera quality so can forgive the sub par hardware features. I hold a good camera above other things like screen res, waterproof, size, etc etc.
The pixel 4 is the first time I've seen a Pixel and thought meh. Yes the camera(s) are upgrade this time, but not quite enough. I would still take a Pixel4 but the reduction is battery is seriously bugging me, as my 3 is a bit limp in the battery department. But most of all I can't stomach the Google Photo back up offer no longer running. This was a prime selling point, as I'm sure any with kids knows, you take a lot of snaps! Having free orignal quality backups was really nice.
All this is leading me to jump ship and not get a Pixel 4. But what is there? Huawei have seriously good cameras, I had P20 pro for 2 weeks, but their UI is more than terrible and booloader unlock + ROM support is next to non existent. Samsung insist on the crappy SoC compared to the Snapdragon offering, plus their cameras are good but a step back compared to pixels. Oneplus make everything is awesome phones, but are alway below average in their cameras.
Just not sure really, may stick with the P3 and see what happens in the next 2 years

Hello,
I've had every pixel since launch and, whilst the phones have been underwhelming, I absolutely love the point and shoot camera quality so can forgive the sub par hardware features.
Having free orignal quality backups was really nice.

same, I won't get p4, I love compact phones (so 4xl is not an option) and battery life in small p4 is going to be ridicolous lol. I love my p3, just wish it had more battery life, that was the only downside and they didn't correct it in p4, actually I think they made it worse :crying: why the **** aren't they making the phone 1-2mm thicker but with bigger batteries? really can't understand, I think everyone would prefer a little thicker phone but with better battery life...
also not having original backup is incredible, have a kid here too and need best quality for my millions pictures lol.
really can't get what they are doing... other thing I don't like is the fingerprint gone...
my top priorities for a phone are compact size, great cam quality and battery life.. so considering the alternatives around I think i'll stick with the p3 for some long time lol... also considering I hate as well notches, punch holes and similar and huawei and samsung's horrible UI
Oh my lord I didn't even think about Fingerprint scanner. Just reading a review about it, no scanner and face unlock that is a bit wonky. I'm definitely out then.
Seeing I went from a Nexus 6 to the Pixel 3, I think there is a Pixel 7 in my future. They should have messed up then fixed things a couple of times by then.
