Looks like the credible SamMobile has 4.4.2 kitkat in their palms. We could expect a leak to be soon, in the past they have been really good about leaking firmware like how they already have for the s4 by contacting thier "elite friends."The picture below is a screenshot of the kitkat easteregg and wrote note 3 on it. Some of the things im most looking forwards to is Google wallet and the ability to hide apps from the app drawer. FUNFUNFUN
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8E4dspICPJE
Basicly saying we'll leak it when it become more stable. It doesn't surprise me considering the s4 got it leaked already, but what does surprise me is that they got a kitkat leak first, considering we have the newer/premium device.

OK just a thought but if we do get the release.... the leaked one could there be a chance that there is some way we could unlock the bootloader.. being that it is a leak not fully locked down like the officials would be.

They leak will be as locked down if it's for our variant... And either way, chances are It will be for the international version so either way it's irrelevant. But it shouldn't be too hard to port it hopefully.

Can this be installed on a Dev edition? Since it probably has the aboot partition included, will it lock the Dev edition phone? Once a dev makes this rom suitable for the retail version, is there a way to extract and repack the files without the aboot portion? How does one make an Odin-flashable file anyway if one has the partitions like boot.img, modem.bin etc? I've always been wanting to learn to make my own Odin .tar files in case I want to flash and don't have recovery installed.
Thanks
Isn't anyone concerned about this update, I mean look at the SE Android Status from N9005 from the test build it is currently showing as Enforcing. For those of us with the Retail SM-N900V doesn't this mean no more Safestrap Recovery? Also, if you go back and read about the Test Firmware it does a complete wipe of Data, so shouldn't we be worried about Root too? I certainly understand the excitement over 4.4.2 but isn't anyone paying attention to what the test build has done?

You mean Root has been restored already on the international version, which this is mainly due to the Unlocked Bootloader, which it is simpler to restore Root on a device that has an Unlocked Bootloader as you just install/flash the SU.zip in custom Recovery and Root is restored, works for Unlocked devices. There lies the problem, for those of us with the retail SM-N900V if the KitKat update does a complete wipe on install deleting the internal storage all is lost, if SE is set to Enforcing it could be a cold winter.

It's not really Root I'm worried about, I'm more concerned with Recovery. If the SE status changes from "Permissive" to "Enforcing" there goes our ability to flash new custom 4.4.2 ROMs that I'm sure will come out. It will be like owning a SM-N900A.

I was under the impression that the only data wipe was when people are Odin-ing the update, rather than accepting an OTA. On the past androids i had (incredible, thunderbolt, galaxy nexus, s3, note 10.1, nexus 7) i haven't had an update that wiped data from an OTA.

For some reason I don't think they are going to set it to enforcing. Because they haven't for the past 3 updates. Even if they did. Hash would be able to easily cook up ss because on the at&t note 3 and Verizon s4 and s3 are enforcing and he was able to do it... Never underestimate @Hashcode

Here's the bottom line up-front
Samsung has inserted code to blacklist our baseline and mitigate our exploits in the bootloader patch they began pushing out last night. You will need to flash the updated bootloader baseline and stock pit in order to restore your device to operational status. The How-To Unlock your Bootloader thread is invalid at this time.
Going Forward
I need your help with CASUAL. In order to mitigate this problem, I began working on a CASUAL update system on January 13. If you feel inconvienced now, contribute to the Casual Update System beta by testing it. Currently, CASUAL is dumb. If there is a problem you won't know until after you flash. The idea behind the Update System is to either update the CASUAL to work again, or kill-switch it and automatically bring you to a thread like this one. Obviously it's infinitely more helpful than a simple failure and I need testing on Windows, Linux, Mac and firewalls.
The CASUAL Unlock method will be updated when we figure it out and it will be possible to auto-update or do a helpful kill-switch in the next version.
Addressing Security Patches:
Recognized Developer Ralekdev has began work on a new exploit. It's not going to be as simple as it was before.
Bootloader Blacklisting
You can view the updated code here: http://pastie.org/private/zzfhwlrgeeuzweiccjdpvg#22
Previously, Odin Mode would accept any SBOOT with the proper signature. Samsung has implemented a blacklist which causes properly signed flashes to fail if they are contained in the blacklist.
Code:
bytes_to_hexstr(BL1_blacklist_str, base_addr + 0x1BF0, 16);
if ( !strcmp(BL1_blacklist_str, BL1_blacklists[i]) )
{
sub_43E03A00("BL1 of the blacklist - %s\n", BL1_blacklists[i]);
return -1;
}
The old bootloader contained random ARM hex data "CD D2 04 85 63 83 52 7C C9 8A 97 1A CD 30 78 FB".. The new one contains an identifier "EXYNOS_4412 1220". The new bootloader is also programmed to not be able to flash itself.
Non-Header Code Execution
You can view the updated code here: http://pastie.org/private/ryxaraypnnhbmtt6nswvq
Previously, if the ANDROID header was missing from the kernel, SBOOT would execute the partition as raw ARM code. This allowed Ralekdev's exploit to jump into the SBOOT.bin and execute download mode without security checks. However the code has been replaced..
Code:
if ( !memcmp(v5, "ANDROID!", 8) )
{
*** DO NORMAL SECURE BOOT ****
}
else
{
dprintf("Could not do normal boot. (invalid magic)\n");// this is where we exploited it last time to load my code
s5p_start_download_mode(v9);
}
return 0;
}
So obviously, this execution of arbitrary code exploit has been patched.
Conclusion
We are working to bring a new exploit and make it easier that the last one. Ralekdev will be analyzing and working on a new exploit. I will work on deployment techniques. For now if youre having problems, flash back to stock and root your device.
Why cant Samsung and Verizon just leave this **** alone and let android be real AOSP.

That was funny!
Here is the part about the OTA that is being left out.
If you look at the OTA it wont execute the updater portion of bootloader until the end.
The first thing the OTA does is examine the partitions, files, etc to see if they have been altered... If the checks fail the OTA just quits with error 7 (or 8 I forget). When it quits nothing flashes. This will occur on pretty much any custom ROM unless you edit the OTA to bypass the checks (see next line)...
I'm not saying be stupid and TRY to flash the OTA on a custom ROM but I built an L4 base last night with the OTA so you really dont need to anyways. To do this I had to remove those checks I just mentioned.
This thread should be sticked in two forums, this and general, because people thinking about rooting and on the edge need to do so now before the stock ROM forces the OTA!
But as far as a custom ROM accepting and succesfully flashing the OTA? Pretty much zero to none. Trust me on this ;c)

And I agree, Verizon has turned total ***** on this!
They could have atlast made it 4.1.2!

Anyway, would be interesting to see how this blacklisting is done.
Is it only checking for modified partitions or actually checking something else against a (real) blacklist??

I'm 1/2 tempted to flash it, then to take the phone to Verizon (as instructed) and cancel my goddamned service right there. There is NOTHING in my contract saying that I can't flash custom roms so this is just a malicious attempt to brick people's phones on Verizon's part.

Update your recovery to TWRP 2.6.
Phone is an AT&T I717 hence why I posted in this forum, using CWM, yes I'm downloading from WiFi with a laptop using Chrome, and the only ROM that worked was Slim 4.2.2. I flashed that one several months ago but my cousin is having freezing and rebooting problems why I was going to flash something else.

Its very easy . . . just download the zip from their site and flash it with CWR. It will replace CWR.
Use TWRP to make a backup of your current system and efs, then wipe system and data, then any rom you flash will be a clean installation. You don't have to mess with the modem.

Why did CWR fail?
Like Captemo said, its outdated. Since 4.1 (JB) roms hit, you get a status 7 error, installation aborted.
Whats the big difference between twrp 2.5 and 2.6 lol 2.5 works just fine ...people were having issues with newer versions and 4.3 ....i say why fix something that isn't broken but people will argue with that. So whats the difference

At the moment we don't know yet. But I was told today that you can go back to 4.1.1 with a great risk of bricking your device.

If you updated to 4.3 you cannot go back to 4.1.1
Also going to 4.1.1 is touchy. If you were to go back you need to go to 4.1.2
Basically if you have the official 4.3 update and beyond you cannot unlock the bootloader or in some instances root.
I am using the Skynote Rc2.5 ROM but I am technically coming from 4.1.2. There is no official 4.2.x update for this version of the Note 2.

Right, I was asking because the ND3 update doesn't appear to be any different than MJ9 firmware wise except for what I assume are mostly changes in the baseband to accomodate the Telus bands. I would think that safeboot will be updated easily for this minor build but I am not any expert by any means.
I also saw people talking about for the same Telus update for the S3 to just Odin backflash VRUCNC1 4.3 to VRUCML1 4.3 with success (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2575661&page=153). Anyone tried that? I might actually try it myself to get root back. I don't this new "update". I think VZ did this more to take away root than add some really necessary Canadian roaming anyway.

Curious to see what your results are if you do try this. I also feel that VZW did this update more to take root away, especially considering that the base band could have been incorporated into the (hopefully) upcoming 4.4 update.
Yup, this annoyed me enough that I finally got an account!
this update was just to steal root. they had already tried using the my verizon app to take it. telus uses gsm and the same lte frequency verizon uses. all vzw note 2's could already "roam" on telus. this was just vzw being f**ktards trying to control us.
Has anyone been able to revert or re root their phone after this?

Other users are reporting that you can Odin back to MJ9 and then root with saferoot. See this thread for details... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52792973

I was forced the vruand3 update at about 4 am while I was sleeping. I woke up to no root and some issues tied to the freedom app not being uninstalled. I flashed back to mj9 with odin. I rerooted with saferoot. I was still having the connection issues with everything google related. I took the ota update again to try to fix the issue. The google issue fixed itself after the ota, but my root wasn't taken away this time. So now I'm on build vruand3 and have full root access. Maybe someone can shed some light on this , or it will help someone
1.0 Introduction
This is a series of guides that will cover the basics of ROMs, kernels, recoveries, installation and so on. Questions asked in here will be answered as fast as possible. This is not a thread for unbricking your device, but rather to avoid getting into a situation where you end up with a bricked device. I do realise that the LG G2 is a year old, but since its price has dropped, it offers A LOT of value for money and while some people leave for newer devices, other people grab the G2.
1.1 Rooting
Let's cover the basics steps of rooting, installing a custom recovery and making your first backup.
If you do not know what root is, a brief explanation would be getting access to the root of your device. What that means is that you get access to parts of your device that are otherwise hidden - because the average Joe would not know what to do with root access and could possibly end up with a device that is unusable. As implied, there is a risk involved in rooting your device, although with the LG G2 the action is most often reversable.
Disclaimer: I cannot be held responsible for any damage you do to your device. Following this guide should be safe, but there is a risk involved
So how do you root your LG G2?
The absolute easiest way is to download towelroot. If your software version is 20G or newer, (or if towelroot doesn't work for you) try stump root. Link further below.
towelroot can be downloaded from towelroot.com
Click the lambda, download the apk file and install it.
If you get a pop up message claiming that the apk is dangerous, agree to it and continue installing. As previously mentioned, rooting IS not risk free, and this application abuses an exploit in the kernel.
After installing and opening, press "make it ra1n". That will root your device.
When finished, reboot. Then go to Play Store and download SuperSU. SuperSU is an application that will allow apps to gain superuser access and it is vital for any root user.
Now you have root and the ability to give SuperUser access to apps.
EDIT: For Software versions 20G and up, towelroot doesn't work anymore, use stump root instead.
Link is here: Stump Root for LG Devices
1.2 Installing a Custom Recovery
Why is a custom recovery necessary? It is, because it’s the easiest way (and often the only way) to get your device back and working in case you get stuck in a bootloop. It’s also vital for flashing custom ROMS and custom kernels.
How do I get one? Well, there’s an app for that!
Check out this thread to get AutoRec, an application that’ll automatically install a custom recovery to your G2! Credits go to @Cloudyfa and @bender_007 CLICK HERE
IMPORTANT!
MAKE SURE YOU DOWNLOAD THE CORRECT VERSION FOR YOUR DEVICE!!!!!!
After downloading, install the application, allow it superuser access and install a custom recovery.
When finished, reboot to recovery. You’ll need to take a backup of your working ROM.
2.0 Making a backup of your working ROM and vital partitions
Now you should be in recovery:

Tap “Backup”, and backup the following partitions:
Boot
System
Data
EFS
The backup will take roughly 3 minutes to finish, be patient. When it’s done, reboot system.
Make a few copies of the backup. ALWAYS have a backup on your device , keep one on your computer and one on a microSD somewhere.
Cheers for this...looking at possibly buying it soon. So I guess this will work even regardless if its a D800 or D802?

Yay I'm happy it could help anybody!
Yes it should, but it depends on which software version your D800 comes with. If towelroot doesn't work, IOroot or Stumproot should work Try this out when you get it - if it doesn't work, quote this message (so that I get a mail) and let me know.
Will do cheers. Yeah looking at buying a D802 from Hong Kong hy the end of this month, so no idea what kind of software its going to come with [emoji53]. Plus I want to install the G3 ROM onto it pretty much straightaway. Never rooted before but seems fairly straight forward.
should point out that autorec is for kitkat only afaik
also towelroot doesn't work on some of the later kitkat roms, but you can use 'stump' root instead

If you're getting a D802 you shouldn't worry one bit. Even the latest 20F software can be rooted by towelroot!

Great, looking forwards to that!
Towelroot does not show ROOTED in either dialer status RCT check or Download mode!
Yup it worked for me.
Ofcourse, I didn't take the root too far, only used it for the following:
Install SuperSU
Install Greenify/WLD/G2 Xposed
Later on, wanted to use warranty, and was a lil worried, but it seems undetectable, especially since I've deleted SuperSU and Xposed..
I did not:
Install custom recovery
Install custom ROM
So, anyone else considering using towelroot, but hesitating because of the potential warranty implications, this should help make up ur mind..
This thread is what i am looking for so THANKS alot OP. Really helped us noobs. Can You do TuTs(noob friendly) on 'How to install custom roms using Autorec' or kk based ROms or kernels to LP based roms and kernels etc kinda like that flashing basebands and all for LG g2 D802 ? Cheers m8

I have the same device. I want to get custom recovery. ... My its new. Can you help me?
So far I have permissive selinux and dm-verity is disabled. We CAN have root if we can get odin to accept a custom system img. I need some samsung modders to PM me so we can figure something out. Our phones have secure download so I cant get a custom system image installed but once we get that we have root.
Also this seems to add VoLTE support to my sprint model(calling+ i believe sprint calls it)

Good to see you here me2151,
With your dirtysanta, the whole v20 lines were able to achieve root!
Hope you get the support from other devs and achieve the root for the note 8, too!
Cheers ??

Good stuff, I'll be watching this thread closely and wish you good luck in your efforts!
I figure avoiding any updates would be a good idea until root is found, correct? In case they update bootloader and that patches whatever bugs would be used to get root.
Thank you for trying to get root on the snapdragon Note 8!

At the moment its possible to use Odin on stock files to revert the firmware so updates (should) be fine.
I'd offer to be a tester for you. Very familiar with ODIN, ADB/Fastboot etc. It does not seem you need testers so I won't PM you.
Good luck and I'm sure with all the great minds here, you'll get it. Good initial progress.

I would avoid trying to
Port the S8 Snapdragon root method altogether... It limits battery capacity to 80%. Need to find a better permanent solution
We need leaks.

Not trying to port their method but yes. Battery is still limited. Best bet would be a debug bl leak like note7.
Has anyone started a bounty yet? And if so can i get a link to it please

if you need help I'm here,
Would the S8+ root work on the note 8? They're so similar that I would think so unless it has something to do with the RAM.
Edit: never mind. I just seen that it was already being discussed.

It should work. We just need to find someone with access to the files. Currently have my Snapdragon Galaxy s8 rooted with sampwn and while 80% limit does suck. The advantages of having root and xposed are well worth it imo.

Sampwn is the easy way of doing things. it required access to a VERY special eng firmware. The access I have currently is part of what they have. Theirs had the su binary preinstalled into system that allowed them to do sampwn. Mine doesnt. But... At this time i literally only need to remount system to read write and we win.
I honestly have not been working on it because I am in FL and we were just hit with a hurricane. I now have my power back though so I am going to start back up on gaining access to system. Once again anyone who can work on exploits please PM me.

First off hope you and your fam are okay. I'm in Houston and just went through the same 2 weeks ago but Florida looks alot worse.... I'm glad we have someone like you looking into this. I followed the gs8 thread daily and I remember reading that they also had trouble getting system to mount but eventually they got it. Maybe we can have one of those devs swing by here and lead you in the right direction. With the announcement of the new iPhone our Note 8 look better then ever lol and root would be a cherry on top. Please keep up the good fight!

Oh I see. Awesome! Glad they are helping out. So your trying to get system to mount to install SU binary that came preinstalled with their firmware? Is a firmware like theirs available for our Notes to just get SU and then maybe revert back to a more stable firmware with flash fire?
