Hey guys! Recently rooted using safestrap because I was running out of space on my s4 For even primary functions. So I decided I would root and use an app to delete some bloatware. Well, I got a little carried away and deleted a few system apps that other apps rely on. I tried a simple data reset, nothing. I tried unrooting via supersu and then data resetting again, none of the system apps reappeared. For some reason I Mistakenly thought a data reset would fix anything and that seems to be way off. Any help would be much appreciated. In particular I deleted the system calendar and now my work calendar won't sync even though I still have Google calendar installed . Help!
This will get you back to stock MK2:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2578209
You can also use the VZW repair/update software if you have that installed. I can't find a download for it though.

Correct, I meant saferoot. Thanks for your guys' quick response. The phone isn't bricked just a little buggy on that single app. So close! haha. I'm downloading the mk2 factory image right now. My internet is horrendous in the midwest but once It's download, honestly I'm not sure how to use odin to flash that stock image and get those factory apps back. I looked at the {odin}{TAR} VRUEMK2 emergency wipe which is probably what I want to do, but it's a little confusing what I'm supposed to do with the file once I've downloaded it to my computer. Thanks guys

Thanks again, got it all figured out, phew I'm such a noob. Feeling pretty accomplish right now though. wooo. For the mk2 build I used this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2578209 for anyone else that could possibly be as lost as I was go there.

I had ME7 and rooted that, MODded some stuff, tweaked settings, disabled/froze bloatware... and everything was fine. Stable, fast enough.
Then I allowed (because I couldn't stand the constant Update Nag!!!) the MI1 update and DeLaVega Rooted that and things have been unstable since. Seemingly random apps are crashing and occasionally causing rebooting, sometimes it needs the battery pulled. The most critical app, and the one that leads to reboots the most, is Google Maps Nav - the one app I need most.
I am thinking I would like to revert to factory stock ME7, then re-root it, and maybe TWRP (and I have Titanium). There's nothing in MJ7 I need or want and I don't trust MI1 (it was out what... three weeks?)
I would do this myself but I can seem to find a ME7 Image that WIPES and unroots the phone.
It would probably help if someone would explain a bit more how the pieces work. I gather there's a bootloader, a kernal, the ROM and user data. Rooting deals with the boot cycle, the kernal is the main OS, the ROM contains OS layer above the kernal along with system apps and such. Obviously, those three have to get along. So my question is, if I used DeLaVega to root MI1, Can I just flash a non-wipe ME7 ROM? It seesm to me that the MI1 root tool would not get along with the ME7 ROM -- is that right?
BTW, I'm not a ROMmer. I get how ODIN works but I've never flashed anything (via Odin) to my phone(s) other than that MI1 root image (and WHY/WHAT is that 1.3gb?!? The ME7 exploit was a few KB)
Thank you VERY MUCH in advance for explanations, links and so on.

as for as i know there is no method to downgrade once you have taken an update, not even with ODIN. once you take an OTA or update it you are stuck with it, you cannot go backwords

+1.
Now the only thing I can say is backup using TI and do a FDR (factory data reset).
This should clean up your issue. You will not lose root.
After that restore your apps one at a time and by all means make sure you *DO NOT* take the MJ7 update.
You think you are stuck now????
I have MI1 and it's rock solid with no crashes.
I have all the bloat frozen or disabled.
My phone never reboots or hangs.

I did FDR twice. Turned off restore of Google stuff during setup wizard, turned of AutoUpdate in Store so I could control what apps loaded, too.
After first FDR it appears I still had root. I think that MAYBE something went funky because I was rooted on ME7, let MI1 come via OTA, then DeLaVega'ed that. I just don't know.
Now, I have a different phone, I am going to need to UNroot and FDR the phone I will send back. Haven't found info on UNroot for Mi1/DeLaVega yet. I've seen ROMs for ME7-nowipe and MJ7-wipe.
Thanks

Look at this thread. -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301259
Ok so I plan on formatting back to stock. Completely lose root and any modifications I have done because I'm beginning to have a lot of serious issues with my phone. SD card keeps unexpectedly getting removed, when my signal is low for both WiFi and 3g/4g I get a new Sim card is installed! Then literally 10 seconds or less later, old Sim card restored! And it just keeps going and going.
Anyways I'm hoping a full factory reset will take care of these issues because I've messed around with a lot of stuff but nothing like flashing a new radio or stuff like that. Only installed hyperdrive rls12 on a partition with safestrap. And installed viper4fx audio mod on my stock ROM.
I read in the development thread about using the emergency repair mk2 which is what version I am on and seems like what I want to do. So, if I follow those steps using Odin which I've never used before I should be ok? Or am I having other hardware issues? And why can't I just unroot and do a factory reset? Wouldn't that be the same?
Thank you fellow xda'ers. I'm not completely noob at this stuff, I do get into it pretty good with every phone I've owned so far. Just some odd questions.

Unrooting and a FDR are not quite the same as a No-Wipe flash.
Where they can be the same if nothing was modified, only the No-Wipe flash is guaranteed to put the system partition in a pristine state alond with all the built in apps that go with it.
If you want to get back to stock, flash the No-Wipe image of MK2.
No wipe -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301259

I think your issues could be related to how you rooted or what things you modified after you rooted.
Rooting itself doesn't cause issues; it's what you do after the rooting that does.

Thank you. Though i was planning on doing a full-wipe just to alleviate any possible issues. I don't mind installing the few apps i have on here. Though i will definitely be rooting again because the viper4fx audio mod is amazing in combination with my headphones. I did use saferoot for 4.3 before it was officially mentioned to work on mk2 though it was still 4.3 as everyone was claiming it would work. Which it did. Must of been some of the mods or 30 apps i installed messing with stuff like frameworks and busybox and modifying that n such.
I plan on doing this once i get home later on. I'll post what happens. Think i covered everything....
So flash the no-wipe, then use saleroom. Also use the xposed installer and Wanam. I bought the pro version of ROM Toolbox. It remembers frozen apps across wipes.

I chose to do just the full wipe and everything seems fine. Great actually. No issued yet and phone is as smooth as a baby's bottom.

As for you enfurnic yeah I believe that's what I read unless I read it wrong. The unlocked icon still exists however. I guess to remove that you have to install wanam and the exposed toolbox and so be somewhere in wanam it says "fake system normal" or something. I read it last night I just forget exactly what it said.

To remove the unlocked padlock / custom screen I've read that you have to manually remove busybox as the system will see that and still show unlocked.
And the Wanam fake system status doesn't always work either it seems.
Doesn't bother me though.

So I was on 4.3 MJ7 for a long time and everyday I would hit "install later" on the OTA update pop up but one day I messed up without realizing it and now my phone is on 4.3 MDK, I rerooted my phone and I want to remove my custom rom I've had forever that I don't even use because my internal space is almost used. Well I can't access Safestrap recovery. It says it's installed but it won't go into recovery mode. Also I haven't reinstalled it or anything as I don't know how it would effect the custom roms accessibility. Safestrap is v3.71 and I just need to get rid of Hyperdrive. By the way the OTA pop ups are back so I'm thinking of just updating all the way then rooting, I just need a clean device first. I hope to receive a solutionn and appreciate any help. BTW I have installed Busybox as some people have found that as a solution, well I didn't and to be perfectly honest I don't even know what Busybox does or is lol.

Howdy-
I just finished rooting my wife's brand new S4 using towlroot. Installed SuperSU and now have safestrap 3.72 installed (TWRP is a no-go). I have never had a Samsung device before.
I mainly did this because I wanted to get root before some update came out that prevented it in the future. In a couple years, when my wife needs a new phone and this one get's passed down to my son for a game machine, I wanted to be ready to put a custom ROM on it.
Any recommendations on anything I should do with this phone in the meantime? I turned off OTA updates already and did a nandroid via Safestrap but would love to hear any suggestions you guys might have for good apps etc. for this phone.
BTW, her previous phone was an HTC Rezound. What a nice upgrade this S4 is!
Thanks,

I would suggest installing the Xposed Framework and browsing through modules. It's amazing how many interesting modules you can find that are useful or fun or whatever. GravityBox is a very useful module that gives you tons of options for tweaking the OS (actually not sure if there is a non-AOSP version). Another one is XLED, which lets you adjust the color/timing of the led notification light for different apps. I just find it fun looking through modules and finding creative things people have made. Cheers!

Absolutely XposedFramework. There are many modules on here that you will find beneficial. I would recommend however, installing them one at a time as sometimes some of the modules will not work correctly with your device. I know that a couple that had something to do with altering the display caused my phone to flash on and off. I know this is pretty unspecific but it has been a couple months and I can't specifically remember what the modules were. As far as apps go... I would recommend CPU Tuner if you want to play around with battery life and performance, Titanium Backup is a MUST as you can backup Apps and App Data to your SD Card, the paid for version will even let you freeze certain processes. For example, you can stop the annoying security update notifications. You can also use TB to remove any bloatware you do not want. Greenify is excellent as well, it hibernates apps and help quite a bit with battery performance. SuperSU is vital and will control all your root permissions for all your apps. SD Card and RAM booster from Gejos Enterprise are helpful also.
Thanks for your advice!

You may be able to simply turn off updates by going to settings/more/security/security updates and unchecking the box called automatic updates. I am on a custom ROM and to be honest, I can not remember if this works or not so if it does, please let me kmow.

Hi Again All-
Well I installed Titanium Backup PRO. I got a little crazy and started uninstalling a bunch of stuff...all the KNOX stuff and some other things. Anyway, just about freaked when the phone would not boot, giving me some errors. Ended up getting back into Safestrap and restored my Nandroid and then my Titanium Backup that I made. I then re-verified root with towel root and uninstalled then reinstalled Safestrap.
But now, something is happening that I never noticed before. During Boot in pauses at a screen that says SAFESTRAP : DISABLED (System Starting in 10 seconds). There's a picture of a robot and buttons at the bottom for Recovery and Continue. Is that normal? Is it because I am running a stock NC5 ROM?
Another question....it's my understanding I am stuck with SafeStrap. But most of the ROMS I see in the forums don't seem to have instructions for installation using Safestrap...only TWRP or CWM? Am I just not looking hard enough?
Sorry I am coming from an HTC phone that seemed so easy to flash compared to this but I guess it is just a learning curve.
BTW: I ended up uninstalling a bunch of bloatware again. And I FROZE all the KNOX stuff I could find. Anything else I should freeze?

That is just the normal boot sequence for Safestrap. "Continue" will boot whatever is loaded in the stock slot (only use the stock slot, booting into any other partition WILL SOFT BRICK YOUR DEVICE), selecting "recovery" will boot you into safestrap. Doing nothing is the same as selecting "continue". There are not many ROM's compatible with Safestrap, and unfortunately, Safestrap is the only recovery you can use on your Verizon S4. I would recommend Hyperdrive, it is very stable. I have tried too many other ROM's to list and have found most of them either unstable or incompatible with Safestrap.

Awesome. Thank you! I want to try Hyperdrive.
I have never used Safestrap to install a ROM. So far I have only performed a Nandroid. Is there a step-by-step published somewhere on how to install a new ROM with Safestrap? I have no idea how to 'load a ROM into a slot' and want to make sure I don't do anything to brick my wife's phone. You can image how that would go!!

This is the link to the newest version of HyperDrive, it just came out the other day and I'm pretty sure there are instructions for flashing on here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301724
This is a how to video from YouTube from an older version of HyperDrive http://m.youtube.com/watch?list=PLdq__cOJ2egzOEqUSbxTCZEMmE1I7b4q-&v=_IEqyRgRenA
If I remember correctly, it explains safestrap in the beginning of the video. In any case, only install/boot from the 'STOCK' slot. Booting into any other partition will brick your device.

Thanks. I already downloaded HD... I will watch the video but getting a rom into a 'slot' is the concept I am trying to figure out. Never dealt with 'slots' before.
Thanks,
CxP

Safestrap boots whatever ROM is loaded into whichever slot you have selected. I think the top left button is called 'Boot Options', this is where you select the 'slot'. As long as 'stock' is selected you are good with regards to which 'slot' you are booting into. Selecting 'install' from the main menu will install whatever ROM you flash into whichever 'slot' you have selected. 'Install' should always be red, this means you are installing into the stock slot.

Thanks! I also found this video helpful. http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=LL1MNLeTbvc-qrziaq5m58Nw
Question though...if I am always working on the 'Stock' slot, that just means I cannot have several different ROMs loaded into different slots so that I can quickly switch between them, correct?
I can always go back to a nandroid backup if I want to go back to my current backed up 'stock' ROM, right?

Hello,
I'd like to upgrade to something more current than my 4.3 JB. Only, I'm concerned with losing my apps data and phone data. I used Odin one click root with no data loss. Now I'm wondering how the heck do I upgrade. Do I have to unroot to a stock mj4 first, then upgrade either ota or by myself to the highest version or since I'm rooted and running on twrp, can I upgrade with the most current or at least NC5 4.4? All the while, not having to reinstall my apps like before or any data loss?
My applogies ahead of time on not knowing the correct terms or procedures on what direction is the correct one to take in steps.
Thanks.
First you need to consider if you upgrade to NC5 or higher that installs Knox. Second has your trip counter been tripped to 1x0 ? You can root NC5 with Towel root and not trip Knox counter. But if upgrade higher than NC5 there is nothing that you root with that will not trip Knox counter. To save your data and apps you can attempt a "dirty flash" . This is done by finding a flash able version of NC5 in a zip file that you place on your sd card flash through twrp recovery, while in recovery you wipe caches and system, but not data.
However the odds of something being corrupted are high. The best way is to save all your data to your desktop and install back on the device after you are done flashing. Just click on rom flashing basics in my signature all info and links you need are there. Or you can find it on page 3 in General section.
I've got knox on 4.3.. and it's tripped any how. I don't care about the warranty, it's two years old. Hasn't got any left. hahahah. I'm more concerned with having to redo all the settings, my apps, work apps detailed things I really don't want to reset if I can help it (more so I can't remember all of it). I'm not sure how they did it before under the "one click no data loss" root. Wish there was a concise method, centralized that specifially says, hey if you used this, and want to do it like this, this and this, to save date, you do this and presto. hahah.
To be honest, I'm not sure what direction to take to even begin with. I'm rooted and what's the best way to update from there. I read your page, but it doesn't tell me what to do from being already rooted standpoint. Also it starts off as if you're on 4.4.4. I'm still on 4.3 MJ4. lol
Real quick, you mentioned to wipe the cache and system but not data. For obvious reasons, but could you explain what the three portions contain, reason being so I can wrap my mind around it to better understand why this, but not that.
Thank you for your quick response. Hope I can do this today if I'm lucky to get it right.
Ok so have a device that is rooted running mj4. To upgrade to 4.4.4 NC5 you need to find a copy of NC5 thats already rooted and in a flashable zip file. Than copy and paste the zip file to your sd card, and boot into your recovery. Now wipe cache, dalvik-cache, and system but do not wipe the data. This will install the new OS and keep your device rooted and save your data. This is commonly known as a dirty flash, most of the time it works. But sometimes it doesn't hence the term dirty flash.
The cache is a log of the OS running if there is an error or crash developers can review it and see what happened and fix it.
A dalvik-cache is data from your apps as they are loaded into the OS when they are opened or started up. The dalvik-cache stores this start up data that is repeated every time the application starts. Then uses it to make the app start up or open faster.

Do you recommend any link for the file? And does it matter if I use a newer version, suppose it's a matter of finding it like you said?
I see many different types out there, trying to match to my phone and I see odex, dodex and different things, I'm not sure what to use. :/

That one is flashable with Odin only. It would work but it would take you back to bone stock NC5 with no root and you would lose all your data. Think of it as buying a new phone and starting from scratch. I found one to but the download link is broken. Most of the guys here have updated to OC5 5.1 of course l'm still running my 4.4.4 NK4 deodexed debloated rom it's smooth and bulletproof.

ah, gotcha. I read also about battery life kind of sucking... How's yours running? Is there any benefit to updating higher? And, say I did 4.4.4, if I wanted to go up, would it be the same way, find a rooted flashable version and boot recovery?
Thank you for your help, really do appreciate when someone takes the time to help someone less knowledgeable.
I've been searching but still haven't found one. Anything in particular you can recommend I add to my search? you're right, some of the links no longer work. Any luck on your end?
