[Q] Issues recovering Vibrant - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'll try and keep this short but here goes...
Got a Bell GT-I9000M from a friend with latest stock firmware according to Kies (I should've taken note of what it was, stupidly, I didn't).
Eventually rooted phone using OneClickRoot.
Fast forward to me trying to flash it using Odin with some custom Roms.
Stupidly forgot to select a PDA file in Odin, so needless to say the phone was soft bricked (would not turn on, would not do ANYTHING), would only go into Download Mode via USB + holding down volume buttons + putting in battery.
Tried flashing with several other ROMs but none worked except for Eugene_2E_JK2_Froyo.mp5 + s1_odin_20100512.pit.
Phone now appears to work properly (boots up, etc), but it has several severe problems:
-connecting USB at ANY time will shut off the phone after a few seconds. Tried several USB ports, different PCs, even using just a wall charger.
-downloading anything from the Play Store results in a "no free space" kind of error.
-SD card will not mount properly. All SD info says "unavailable".
-Browser keeps saying not connected to internet, even though it is.
-Cannot access Download Mode this time. Tried all sorts of button combos + timing. I suspect hardware lock. May try a USB jig at some point.
-Recovery Mode cannot be accessed using button combos, it will only work using Factory Reset (Settings>Privacy>Factory data reset) and the phone will reset into Android system recovery (2e), but I can't load an update.zip because of the problems listed above.
So because I can't seem to find a way to copy a file onto the internal SD at this point or connect it via USB, I can't find a way to flash the phone. I'm very stuck. I'm hoping that a USB jig can force it into Download Mode so that I can flash it with something else.
Any help would be appreciated.

Update: made a USB jig, got it into download mode. Now I just need to reflash it with an appropriate Rom. Will update when I get it working.

So I flashed it with I9000UGKG3_I9000BMCKG3_BMC from sammobile.com which is supposed to be stock for the phone, now I believe it's fully bricked. Even the USB jig won't work. I'm guessing it's a lost cause. Not sure why it bricked it, though.

Anybody got any idea? I'm getting a new fine-tip soldering iron soon for other projects anyways so I'll be able to try the Unbrickable mod.

[Q] Buggy Vibrant after update: Possible to recover with Nandroid image?

Hi,
I just updated my Vibrant to the newest version. Since then, it does boot the right way - there is just the loading symbol (not the vibrant screen), which disappears after a few seconds. BUT: When I plug in the USB, I can normally boot. As I started, the USB drivers of the phone seem to be damaged: It says to be connected, when I'm not, and is not able to connect normally when I plug in the USB cable. My Laptop sometimes identifies the device (I was successful in Mounting the phone drive once), but Kies does not work (I installed both Kies, and after Kies not working the driver package from XDA-dev).
I bought the phone over eBay, so I do not exactly know whether it is rooted. But I did not seem to be rooted, since there were no special applications and the user before even did not reset the phone (I thinks someone who roots would do that).
Now concerning the recovery:
I only got once into the Download&Recovery mode, but did not do anything there. After being stuck there, I pulled the battery to get out of that mode. Since then I cannot get there anymore, when I press the button combination the phone then starts the mode where I can reinstall packages etc.
Thus a flash via Odin seems to be not available (unless I try adb), so I thought the easiest way would be flashing a Nandroid image. Would that work without accessing the Download mode? I could reinstall packages and probably could root, but would not rely on getting the USB connection to work. Furthermore, I could put that image and the update.zip for an image loader on the sd-card. Is that enough to flash a Nandroid image?
Thanks a lot for your help,
Martin
What nandroid image exactly are you trying to flash? Did you make a backup prior to updating? For root, check to see if there is a "superuser" app in your applications drawer. Also, can you refine the questions you are asking exactly? It seems like you have multiple issues.
Thanks!
Thanks for your reply!
Sorry that I wrote the post a little bit to complicated
I would like to flash this image (unrooted): ht*p://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7329357&postcount=2
I would use Clockwork Recovery. And then try the update again.
And I didn't do an backup before I just got the phone and didn't know that an official update could also brick it.
And my question is: Could I flash the image in the following scenario?
- I cannot boot normally (without power supply)
- I'm already on JI6 (the actual version) and can boot the phone having it connected to USB (because it "preboots" to the loading screen, and from there I am able to boot)
- the USB does not seem to work in the right way (thus cannot rely on using adb to enter the download mode)
- I cannot enter the download mode (just the one to reinstall packages)
Or is the chance to high that I completely brick it?
Thanks for helping me!
If you can enter stock recovery, then you should be able to enter download mode.
-Try holding the volume keys and then plugging in the usb cord.
-Try plugging in the phone, wait for the battery icon to show charging, then hold the volume keys and push the power button, let go of the POWER BUTTON IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE SCREEN TURNS BLACK. MAKE SURE YOUR STILL HOLDING VOLUME KEYS
-Try those steps a few times...
So, your telling us that you cannot boot up the phone without usb power? What happens if you try removing the usb while it's booting up?
Did you have adb setup correctly before with all the right drivers?
...To answer your original question: try getting into download mode before you attempting any nandroid. If you successfully get into download mode, whether it be through adb or physically, Odin can be your backup if a nandroid fails. Try a nandroid after following these steps only. Make sure you can get into download mode!
* I'm not responsible for bricking you device. Just doubly make sure you can get into download mode just in case of a soft-brick.
Ok, I flashed back to stock using Odin, but Settings->About phone still says Firmware version 2.1-update1 and the bugs still exist. Is it possible to get completely back to the state before the update?
Thanks so far!
The OTA caused a lot of problems for me too, I was rooted only. My bone stock Vibrant also got the ota, and it went smooth.
I had backed mine up completely, and flashed it back.
However both ended up vary laggy afterwards.
I just ended up flashing a custom rom. Fusion 1.1 on both. Very Happy now.
Does flashing a custom ROM also change the "firmware version" of the phone? Maybe I could get back to 2.1 from my actual 2.1-update1 that way.

[Q] Jacked Up My Vibrant

First Hello All,
I don't post much I mostly lurk and read. I have seemed to totally Brick my phone. . In DL mode Odin doesn't recognize my phone this is after multiple times of reinstalling the drivers via Kies. I seem to no longer be able to get into recovery mode either. Not sure what the heck I did but it seems bad. Any help would be much appreciated.
In general, stay away from Kies.
Look in the Noob guide there are a number of ways to get in download mode or recovery mode.
I am assuming you have the phone rooted and either are trying to load or reload custom software.
here are couple of the ways:
Dl mode = vol up + home + power
Recovery = vol down + home + power.
Pull battery plug usb (already plugged into the computer), hold button combo and insert battery
There are variants of these (like do the above a tap home quickly while holding down buttons) they are in the Noob guide as well.
Good luck, this should be easy to fix
Thx. I will give the above a try. I'v been trying everything under the sun. If I can get into recovery I think I will be good.
Thx again.

Is your phone actually entering download mode? If so it's saveable and you are experiencing a driver related issue. Re-install the drivers then search for ODIN 1.82 and YouTube the ODIN video I have made to help you use it. If it's not powering on, I can still fix it as well with JTAG!
I can get into DL mode. I have reinstalled the drivers multiple times with the same result. Windows just won't pick up the phone. I used to be able to get into Recovery easy now seems I can't at all.
Try another machine. The only thing it can be if you are still unable to get it picked up on another machine is a form of brick that effects the USB port (I've never seen that) or your port is dead itself or atleast the data transfer pins (1 or both) are jacked up.
After finally getting back into DL Mode I get the same USB Malfunction error on 3 different PC's. This is weird at this point I have uninstalled and reinstalled all types of drivers from ( Vibrant to SGS II ) still nothing.

Phone won't turn on

Sometimes my I5500 won't turn on.
This has already happened 2 times (with two different firmwares I5500XWJPL and I5503TTLPJP9). The phone shows absolutely no signs of life - screen is black, no sounds, nothing.
I tried everything: pressing VolumeDown+Center+Power, VolumeDown+Home+Power, with or without battery/SIM/charger/SD. Tried removing battery for 30 minutes, charging battery in external charger.
Sometimes when charger is connected, it shows green battery on the screen, but still won't boot.
Last times I spent several hours fiddling with it until it finally turned on..
Can someone tell my if there is a fast way to revive the phone next time this happens?
Maybe your arm11boot is damaged, but still partly working. You need replace that partition. I saw arm11boot partition image in one Russian FW. I can't remember actual name. You can try that, but caution. You might brick your phone compleatly!
sorry for reviving this thread.
but I got the same problem now. Tried to use ROM Manager to install CWM Recovery (following a blogpost explaining how to install a Custom ROM on the SG5). Might have accidentally clicked a different CWM Rec. version than I thought I did. However, ROM manager showed a message, telling me that CWMR was installed correctly.
So I wanted to boot into CWMR up to flash my device with the latest CyanogenMod 7 port from MADTeam. Used the "boot into recovery" option from ROM manager for that purpose. The next thing I know is my phone not reacting to anything.
Tried all methods mentioned afore (Vol- + Home + Power / Vol- + Center + Power, with/w.o. SD card and/or battery inserted). Screen keeps being off, no sign of life, phone wont even do anything when plugged to my PC or a charger.
The phone has been rooted properly before and was running Stock 2.1. Houston, we've got a problem.

Take your battery out, put it back in and turn your phone on, then it will boot up into recovery mode. I also have this problem from time to time, sometimes it boots into recovery, sometimes not and i have to remove/replace the battery.
I actually thought that this might be a useful feature for say - if you wanted to upgrade a friends phone to cyanogenmod in the pub, for example.
did try that. now even had the battery removed for about an hour. put it back in. still no reaction on pressing the power button or one of the combinations that should put it into recovery or download mode. no sign of life when plugging the phone to my computer or the charger.
I do fear the worst, though I dont know how ROM manager was actually able to brick the phone that badly.

In that case then this also happened to me - While exploring the rom manager application after first ever flashing my phone i accidentally selected the wrong phone model from the 'flash clockworkmod recovery' option and my phone was gone forever. Perhaps your problem is similar.
(Luckily it was under warranty and they replaced it. The method worked so well in fact it happened 'accidentally' a second time i acquired a 3rd i5500 out of the box )
bought mine already used, so no chance for a warranty replacement :/
gonna give it a shot with a usb jig now, maybe i can get the thing into d/l mode with that, so I can revive it with odin.

what about the Emergency DLoad Mode, which is not the Download Mode? Did you try it?

how do I access emergency d/l mode?
UPDATE
I actually CAN get download mode (or what I assume it to be) running by pressing Vol- + Menu + Power (while Vol- + Home + Power wont do anything, nor does the USB jig that arrived today). Took me some time to discover this, as this doesnt seem to be the usual 3-button-combination used. BUT: while the phone is now recognized by my PC, it wont show anything on the screen.
Odin (tried 4.28 and 4.43 on both win7 x64 and x32 and everyting related to Kies shut down) does now detect my phone. However, it always gets stuck at "Setup Connection" when I try to flash the stock rom or CWMR. Tried different approaches (from starting DL-mode with the phone being connected to my PC to separately starting DL mode and then connecting, starting it up with the battery already being in place, starting it up with sliding the battery in place while holding the 3 buttons etc.), none of them gets me further so far.
Another hint I found was setting the Baud-rate of the Samsung mobile modem to 203400, but this, unfortunately, didnt change anything.
Anyone got a lead on how to get Odin finally started properly?

ops, sorry: I miss your previous message!!
Now I got it and read this last post.. let some time to think about it, I'll replay soon.. but, generally speaking, at this point there's not so much you can do..
If you can get it into Download or Recovery mode, then you should be fine.

download mode is Vol - / Central Button / Power..
Im aware of that. However, Vol- + Menu + Power is the only key combination that the phone will react upon.
Anyway. Brought it to a mobile phone shop on friday, called them on monday and according to them, the phone should be fixed by tomorrow, wednesday. Seems like ROM manager has done damage that cant be undone without knowing how to handle a JTAG device. But at least its not completely broken. Learning that will cost me 25 Euros, though.
One final update to this: Got the phone back today, they were indeed able to fix it.
Conclusion:
While installing a non-fitting CWM-Recovery through ROM Manager will make your Galaxy 5 unfixable via Odin, it still can be saved by making proper use of a JTAG.

[Q] How to get data from the phone with boot loop

Hi. Is it possible to get data (like videos and photos) from the phone in Boot Loop before "repairing" it? If so, how to do it please?
Yeah, it's definitely possible. Can you still enter download mode (start your device while pressing Vol Down, Home and Power-button)? Then:
You could just root your device with cf-Root for example. Just search for cf-Root, there should be an explanation how to flash it with Odin. Once you've done that, you can enter Clockwordmod Recovery (Start your device with Vol UP, Home and power button), then Storage -> Mount USB-Storage and connect it with a USB-cable. Voilà you can access your data.
If you have CWM recovery, boot to recovery and use adb to copy your files to a PC or to a microSD card.
I can get to download mode, but Odin doesnt recognize my phone. I tried another (the same SGII) phone in "normal working" (not in "download") mode and it recognized it immediately. What does it mean? Is something wrong with the phone?
The phone is not rooted.
So there's no yellow box with "COM" in it when you connect your phone in Download mode? mhh
maybe you could try another usb port? Especially if it's an USB hub or something like that!
Do you have KIES installed for the USB drivers? And if you have, make sure that KIES isnt active while using Odin (check task manager for KIES-related task and kill them).
No, there isnt any yellow box with "COM" there. I tried without Kies installed in PC, with Kies and with Kies with all related tasks killed. I tried all of USB ports and change of PC as well. Nothing works. And as have already mentioned. Another SGII Odin recognized in second (not is download mode but in "normal" working mode)
The videos and photos aren't saved on the Micro SD card by any chance?
Chris.
Unfortunately, no.
What did you do to get a bootloop anyway?
I tried update it using "update option" in the phone. It downloaded the update and then tried to reboot but had stucked in boot loop.
A wipe data/factory reset will only erase user data in the /data partition. It should leave /sdcard (which is the internal sdcard, where your pictures and videos are) alone.
How sure are you about that? Anyway..as nothing works this is probably the last option I can try..

Very sure. Just make sure you don't choose to format /sdcard if that option is available to you. (which if you're not rooted, and don't have CWM recovery, it shouldn't be available to you at all)
EDIT to add: just so you don't freak out, it WILL try to format /sdcard/.android_secure. That is normal. This folder is the hidden folder Android uses for apps that are moved to the internal SD card.
OK, thanks. I will try tomorrow..
Doesnt work I tried everything. With Kies, without Kies (killed all processes related to Kies), I changed USB ports, changed PC.. Any idea why Odin doesnt recognize my phone? I tried another SGII and it appeared almost immediately in Odin (not in download mode but "normal" working mode) Is there anything else I can do?
// I´ve just found some information about USB jig but I am not sure if this will work in this case. Moreover I dont want to lose the warranty so I am not sure if this will affect it.

try this:
power off
hold home and volume up buttons together
now turn power on but keep holding above buttons
and release them after few seconds.

But this will get me into Android system recovery which is not helpful. I cannot do anything in there just erase data/ cache etc. I need ODIN to recognize my phone while plugged in the PC. I can get into download mode as well but Odin doesn recognize my phone. What else can I do?

the other phone you have tried is recognaized while Download mod by the ODIN from PC,?? not in the normal..
if not you are missing the driver still
What to do with USB jig when you are already able to get download mode
actually, I havent tried the other phone connet to Odin in download mode as I dont know what to do then. I mean, can I just take the cable off the phone and long press on/off button while in download mode to stop it? I dont want to break it..
The drivers should be ok, as there is the last samsung usb driver for mobile phones installed (1.5.4.0)
Dont load any rom on the pda of odin, just get the dwnlmod and connect the phone, to see whether its showing added in the odin and idcom highlighted with yellow or not then disconnect the cable and long press as you told to come out fr dl mod

[Q] Phone is not being seen by computer when plugged in, usual solutions do not work

Hello all, thanks for helping me out.
I did a very foolish thing. I rooted my phone and deleted a few bloatware apps that were apparently very important to the phone's functionality. I did not install any recovery software like CWM, fastboot, or anything. It was a stock phone that I simply rooted to remove a few apps. When I went to restart my phone, I found out that I bricked it. Now my phone will only enter Download Mode if I hold the up+down volume buttons and plug it in, or it will get stuck on the LG logo screen and a Security Error screen. A factory reset with the volume down + power will work, but does nothing to fix it.
My immediate issue is that when I plug my phone into the computer, the phone will recognize it has been plugged into a power source (it will either go into Download Mode if I was hitting the volume up+volume down buttons, or start trying to boot up but cycle through the LG logo screen and Security Error screen) but the computer will not acknowledge that anything has been plugged in. There is nothing new listed in the Device Manager. I have read other threads and searched around on the internet. The usual solutions are not working for me:
I have tried several other cables and computers to no avail. I have also tested my current computer/cable, and it worked for data transfer with another phone (Nexus 4)
I have tried cleaning out the contacts on the phone. They were not significantly dirty.
I have tried installing the drivers from LG and even the UniversalNakedDriver
I believe that if I could get my computer to see my phone, I could flash the stock rom back and restore it to working order via LGNPST. I know it is simply a software issue, because prior to my rooting the phone it was recognized by the computer.
Does anyone have any other solutions I haven't tried? Or is this something I need to go JTAG on?
