[Q] First charge-when enough? - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Hello, dear XDA people!
I got my Z Ultra today.
YEEEEEEEHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry, had to do it..
Now, I come from Note 1....and I have a few questions...
one of them is about the first charge...
I tried to read as much as possible, but on the Sony website and the paper manual it says only how to regularly charge and that the green light means it is over 90 percent... AND it says that before first turning Z Ultra on, even though it comes with some charge in it already from the factory, the phone should be charged prior to first time power up...
Now, I did charge it, but it is only showing green light, and no percentage (Ultra is off, I haven't turned it on yet)...
How can I know it is charged fully?
I don't want to leave it plugged in too long, cause I read that batteries don't like that..

new charger
for new phone or smart phone ,first charge is 8 hour,ok

just fill it til full and detach it after full, no need to leave it for 8 hours. as per my experience, first charge will not retain battery level for long. it will come empty fast, This is normal, so just charge it again after drained for a while (maybe 50%) and it will be normal after that .

modern Lion batteries (lithium Ion batteries) don't have a memory. They can tend to think that they have a limit if you only charge it to say 80% all the time, but a full empty and then recharge will annul that. So there is no memory chip or anything.
So charge it to what ever you want..

Also FYI, the green LED turns on when it's reached 90%.

So no need to charge it until 8 hours?
Because i just buy Z Ultra. So raelly need to know for the first charge..
TQ

...just use it right out of the box. Newly sealed devices has about 45% battery life. And it was about what my device had when I unpacked it.
I did not charge it. I just went ahead and started using it until I needed to charge it.
I cannot quite remember if I rooted the device on my first cycle or if I charged it before I started.

I discovered that if you use a note 3 charger or tablet charger you phone charges faster obviously due to more amps.

the ZU will happily charge at 1800mA, I've not seen mine charge any faster than that, I'v not been brave enough to see if true fast charge will work

.........no you don't have to sit there with a timer and wait 8 hours on your first charge. The text refers as a "recommendation".
Your phone will not explode nor will it bend or void your warranty if you only charging it for 7 hours and 53 min or 3 hours the first time.

How long does your Amaze take to charge?

Hi, I think I'm having problems with my amazing Amaze..it's taking just about 5 hours to do a full charge (1%/3min).
Would like to hear some feedback from you guys.
1-How long did your first/second/third charges take (approx).
2-How long does a full (from under 10%) charge currently take?
3-At what rate is your device charging (%/min)
NOTE: I am using a wall outlet and it does say on the phone that it's charging though AC charger.

Do you have an idea of how long it takes for it to increase by 1%?
Yeah, in my case...even with the phone off, it still seems to take just as long.
Cheers
Mine varies alot. If I'm not messing with it and the screen is off its 3 to 3 1/2 hours. However if I start playing a game or just messing with xda it can easily exceed 5 hours. Been thinking about trying the charger for my transformer to see if it charges any faster just haven't yet.

Xperia S not charging

so i bought yesterday my Xperia S, im pretty happy bla bla bla...
Now, my phone was branded with a carrier [Telcel] from México, so I found a tutorial to unbranding, flashing with flashtool a generic UK firmware....
First was charging normally, but after that the phone dont charge, i left it all the night and only gets to 50%, and now im putting bacj to the charger and its getting 1% - 4% and then go back to 1%, so anybody knows why happens this? how to solve it?
Thanks
Maybe your phone is a faulty one ? contact the carrier, they will most likely replace it with a new one
Does it charge offline??
Press volume up +power untill you feel 3 vibration that will reset and turn it off then try to charge again.
If you succeed to charge it you will have to flash another firmware.
Sent from my LT26i using Tapatalk 2
Before flashing, do a factory reset. But I suggest you to contact the carrier
Well after all your recomendations, i do the power + volume combination technique, and a factory reset (now with Pc companion...), and the battery start to charge, now in 4 hours I get 80% LOL but i think that its discharging a little quick, in 4 hours unplugged battery is now 40% (and im not doing anything with the cellphone...) so tomorrow will go to the service and see what they can do... I hope they give me a new one ¬¬
Hey friend ok i register at xda forum only for your issue
Ok look. Before year i buy my X10i it was and it is "the perfect device for its age". I had issue with battery like you. I did research here and there and ... I solve it with doing the following.
Charge the device to its max (until stop charging). Once is charged don't unplug the charge and remove the battery. wait 10sec and put it again. You will see that device will start charging again. Do that like 3-4 times for next 2-4 days and you will see improvement (at me).
From beginning my device battery was fully discharged in 15hours standby now it keep 2~3days .
Wish that help you a bit.

Ohhh thanks for only register for that , well tonight i charge the device all noght again and it get 100% of the battery , the problem here is that in the Xperia S you cant remove the battery , right now im charging again and its a little annoying because the battery goes 1%... 2%..... 1%..... now its like 3% but it goes too slow......
I read that this device in half hour have to be charged almost to 100% isnt it???, because i think that 30 minutes i will get only 10% or something like that ¬¬, i was trying not to go to the technical service but i think that i will have to go

Yes i have another sony ericsson (mini pro sk17a) and its the same charger.... the same situation, even tieh another cable and in the laptop... the same
Soooooooooo continue with this sadness story... i go on tuesday afternoon to give the cellphone in the service center and they told me that they need to check it, so I say ok ok no problem, I go on Wednesday in the evening and they told me that the cellphone was without failure, that its charging and its ok, they told me that "upgrade" the system version (that its not true... its the same ¬¬) and well.... that be all, I made a question ... How many time take the phone to reach 80% (they are giving me with that charge) ???? and they told me: (with a face of surprise ) like 2 hours.... and I say: It's too much isn't it?, and the women said me that for this type of phones is normal..... so i want to make a question for you... how many time take your Xperia S to charge??? since 5~10% to 100%???? for me 2 hours to get 80% its a lot of time.....
Accordign to the respondes in here i will valorate to go again or leave it in that way....
BTW the cellphone its now charging but its too slowwww for me.... I plugged it at 12:30 am and still have 30% of battery, 40 minutes later its 47%....
How are you charging?
- Via USB or via power charger?
- Is Phone turned on?
- What temperature is the Phone? can be be hot? If it is hot the charging might be slower due to battery protection.
- Aren't there anything consuming battery? What do you see as main contributors in the Battery usage?
Well sorry for take a time to respond but i wanna try and wait a couple of weeks to come back XD

- I have try both of them, via USB take a loooot to charge, and if I start to play even it starts to discharge.... x_X via power charger if im playig with it charges too slow... but charges, it takes 2 - 3 hours to get 100%, if I turn off the screen charges faster, but if i received a message or something the screen turns on and besides the brightness is almost minimal it seems that take more time to charge.....
- Yes its turned on, when its off it seems to charge faster but... well i'm off like 2 hours for all my friends or family
- Its cold indeed, right now its charging and its cold, not heat at all
- The main contributors are:
the screen... obvisuly 56%
Android system 12%
cellphone in wait 12%
standby phone 6%
wifi 5%
facebook 3%
and mcafee 2%
as you can see nothing strange
I dont have brightness to 100% its like 30% when its on and only wifi turn on
So i want to ask again to you, how many time take your Xperia S to take 100% of charge??? its normal this behavior...?

For me, it takes two hours. That's without me using it during the charge period, wifi/data/bluetooth off.
One question: which charger do you have? EP800 or EP850/851?

2 hours well it seems to be "normal" then, i will have to turn all off and see how much time takes... for me its too much i get used to have my mini pro (sk17a) get charge in 1 hour 30 mins or even less with the screen turn on and wifi & bluetooth on too
I have EP800, seems that EP850 only its given in a few markets, México its not the case

You said that service guys tested the phone and it is ok, and you tested the two chargers with another device, right?
If yes, change your charger cable with another one. Try to use brand new, they are not to expensive. And try to find some brand name cable like Samsung or Nokia.

I have 2 chargers, and 3 cables , one from my xperia mini, one that i bought from ebay (want to have one in the car for emergencies of a dead battery) and a new one that come with the S.... I'm using the one I bought and the xperia mini.... maybe thats the cause but i really doubt it...
Same issue on Xperia P
I have a similar issue on my new Xperia P since day 1. When I charge my phone using the charger, it charges upto 50% +/- 5%. It will not go beyond that even if the charger is connected for hours. If I charge it from a PC through USB it goes to 100% without any issues. Also, if I charge it through the charger with the phone turned OFF, it charges 100%. So this appears to be a software related issue and not something to do with the charger.
Any suggestions?
*My phone is currently on ICS. Though the issue existed even with GB.
Well, let it pass a week and lets see what happen, mine fixes by itself, now just take 1 hour and a half to charge it , but in the beginning was a pain in the ass

[Q] Really need to charge the battery of the device 30 minutes before turning it on?

I have this doubt since purchasing the Xperia Z!
As soon buy my Xperia Z2 and the store where I will buy it is difficult to leave the charging device 30 minutes before turning it on to test it!
As difficult as it was I let mine charge for an hour or so before I used it. Not sure if I needed to but was in work at the time so had a few things to keep me busy while charging
Sent from my D6503 using Tapatalk
My phone had 62% battery when I recieved it. Probably my contractor that installed some apps and charged it. I didn't charge it untill it was empty.
I wonder what is the need to leave charging for 30 minutes before turning on the device for the first time since the other brands of devices do not need it!

Mine also came with 60% battery when I got it, I think its normal to keep a charge in the battery because it helps battery life.
I let mine drain right down that first day then I charged to 100% overnight.
I currently get to end of day with around 50-60% left
You should always charge them to full before first use. The charge that's in there is only a manufacturing charge, which is enough to keep the cells active.
Also, you shouldn't drain it completely. Lithium works best from around 30%-80% charge.

What I find strange is why other brands of devices do not have this rule??
Li-ion batteries don't need to be fully charged before first use. They don't suffer from "memory" like Ni-Cd. But it is true that for best life you should charge it between 20/30%- 80%. If you plan on storing the phone without use for a long time, best is to charge it to 50-60% (not 100%) and put it away.
Go use and enjoy your phones!
PS: A few laptop manufacturers (like Samsung) have an "extended battery life" mode that you can enable where the battery stops charging at 80%.

You're right, they don't have the memory effect, but they do need charging before use. But yea, storing with at least 2/3rd charge is best.
BTW I sell batteries for a living, have done for 15 years.
Ok so is the correct answer yes, charge for 30mins or not necessary? Seems both sides of argument has support

As an electrical engineer I have to say: You should charge it before first use. 30 mins charge should be fine.
Well, it might be not so obvious for the battery in Z2, as it was manufactured not a long time ago, but it could end up in battery degradation, if the battery has been stored for a long period of time without usage.
Ok so with the Z2's being manufactured within the last month it probably isn't needed then

Well, it's hard to say. Precharging the phone won't hurt.
I charged my first z2 for half an hour, and my second one was up and getting flashed within ten mins. I actually found the second one to be better on battery. I do agree that if the phone has been sat dormant for a long while you should charge, but as these things have literally just been made it'll make zero difference.

Your phone will never truly fully discharge the battery (safety measure) it has to save enough to shut down properly. So that is part of it... I don't know if the cradle is set up to fast charge either... I doubt it, considering the phone should last longer than four hours any way. I'm happy to have a FREE extra battery, and cradle... It charges the battery, that's all I'm really looking for... I you are unhappy with it, I suppose you could send it back...

No such thing is happening. Please do not spread misinformation.
It charges slower than the phone because it does not have Quick Charge, it's a very simple charger. Label says it puts out 1.6A at 4.4V, which means the battery probably charges at about 1A on average. Charging is never 100% efficient and charging does not progress in a linear fashion, it slows down past 80% to near-trickle, otherwise the battery would overheat.
Chargers don't discharge batteries to charge them. This isn't 1990 and our battery isn't NiCad.
I just don't know why they're calling it a cradle. You're not resting your device on it. Those are cradles, this is a battery charger.
THIS is a cradle: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...ue&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_2&smid=A1LWHYTZATVG8I
However, this thread is otherwise interesting, I've used my battery charger for a few cycles, meh, it charges my spare battery overnight.
I know this is an older thread, but what's the experience with this cradle? I just got a used V10 on Swappa with this cradle and it does seem like it's taking a while to charge. I have no problem with how long it's taking, but I need to know if it's defective so I can do something about it on Swappa.

Common sense isn't all that common

I bought a m4 aqua today, but facing some problems

Well, today i bought m4 aqua, and i'm facing some charging problems
this didn't happen with my old smartphone Xperia miro.
1. tried to charge it when it was low on battery like 0% but it wasn't even charging i don't know why, had to plug USB to my PC to start charging it.
2. Takes too much time to charge? It currently says 8 hours until the maximum charge, what the hell? My old smartphone only took like 2-3 hours to get to the maximum
battery
3. Kinda disappointed when i was supposed to get 8GB internal storage, and i only have 1.7GB, i cleaned some stuff and now i have 2.3GB
My warranty gets void because of this?
Is there a way i can fix this?

The device has exceptional little storage, that's s a fact, sorry to say.
Did you root the device in order to clean the apps you are talking about then you might have voided your warranty yes.
Also it heats a lot, with almost nothing opened.

What about the charging?
it takes a lot to charge it to 100% imo

If you only removed some apps then you haven't voided anything. And if your device won't charge appropriately using the stock charger then your device is defected.

I don't get it why is it taking more than 5 hours then.
also I notice a burning smell coming from the charger after a while
is this normal?
Don't let your battery go under 20% limit since this dramatically shortens battery's life.
While charging, use Sony or Sony Ericsson branded Greenheart wall-charger. Not using Xperia device while charging will get you faster charging times.
It shouldn't take more than 3 hours while on idle. If Xperia device is turned off or in Ultra Stamina mode, charging will take about/less than 2 hours.
If it still says and happens charging in 7-8 hours, send your phone to the Services.

That seems like it isn't normal. I think that maybe wall charger is defected.
Smoke smell isn't OK. It shouldn't be burning or smelling. You should change your wall-charger.
