Evening Folks,
Hoping someone can help. I've been trying to install a custom rom onto my mini pro (Any custom rom!). Done a lot of reading and have managed to root my phone but am now stuck when trying to install xrecovery and CWM.
I've put xrecovery, busybox, chargemon and the cwm zip file onto my sdcard. I've been trying to move busybox, chargemon and xrecovery to the /system/bin directory using Super Manager. But it keeps telling me I do not have enough space, even tho I have 150mb internal space free on the phone. As far as I can tell the three files I need to move are less than 1mb and I've deleted just about everything I trust myself to delete.
ALong the way I managed to muck up the google acount password and ended up resetting the phone to the factory defaults, so there is nothing on it. Currently the only downloaded apps are Root Checker, Super Manager and SuperUser.
So I'm hoping one of you fine chaps, and chapetts, is going to be able to point out the stupid mistake I'm making.
I have to escape sooon, so will not be able to reply util tomorrow. Thanks in advance.
SteveG
You realise the /system partition is seprate from the /data partition, so internal free space does not mean free space on the system partition. And did you remount the system partition yet? (This command in terminal emulator: mount -o remount,rw /system) Or you could simply use root explorer and save lots of trouble figuring out the terminal.
i would advise you to install xrecovery via aais, it is quite simple; download aais and put on your sd, download terminal emulator from the market (needs root, you are rooted you say so that is fine) type the commands:
su (start superuser, click allow)
cd sdcard/aais
sh install.sh (now you see the menu)
type 0 for installing xrecovery. phone will reboot and you're done. Download cwm for recovery.zip from xda and install cwm via xrecovery, now you can install custom roms.

Ah, no I didnt realise that. Anyway I can tell how much space in the system partition? Any reason why it should be full after a factory reset? If it is full, any suggestions?

From the market? Hehe, I didnt know what this was so I googled it. Found myself at the Association of Archaeological Illustrators and Surveyors. Strangley enough very little about Android on their website.

If I do this where does the xrecovery file need to be for the install?
Thanks for replying guys. You have givne me some suggestions for the way forwards.

AAIS is an automatic installer for xrecovery, sorry..was not clear enough apparently. You can find it here on xda (xrecovery automatic installation script or something like that) and works like a charm! No need to copy files yourself, run the script and you'll have xrecovery, afterwards install cwm via xrecovery..simple as that
AAIS did the trick (Although I had to use a magnifyng glass to use the terminal emulator. Currently waiting for the rom to finish installing.
Thanks for your help
Simple to use. Useful for those who want ROOT access via ADB or Device for Backup, etc. It is a modified scripts from Doomlord and some1 in the CDMA threads...
Prerequisites
1) Uninstall all HTC Sync & Drivers
2) Download and install http://downloads.unrevoked.com/HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe
3) Make sure your device Display is set to NEVER TURN OFF & not locked in the lockscreen
Instructions
1. Download attachment
2. Extract to C:\
3. Execute file Step 1
4. Execute file Step 2. If doesnt work, go to C:\files and execute Step 2
5. Remount SD card again from the DEVICE SETTINGS page
This will work for all devices not limited to EVO 3D.
For locked bootloaders (any versions), this will result in a temporary ROOT access, and will be lost after reboot.
Please feedback for whichever H-Boot this works on.
Thanks to our following comrades...

http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...1296916&page=2
DoomLord with the automated script
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1321582
For the third guy I cant remember where.. maybe the CDMA section with the permatemproot stuff..
With this script, Titanium Backup and Root Explorer will definitely work even on LOCKED bootloaders (will lose root after reboot, just rerun the script)
For problems especially with SUPERUSER FCs, please download and run the .bat file in the UNROOT.zip. This will clean the system of all old temp root stuffs like superusers, etc...
Appreciate your thanks..
i dun understand why but it didn't work as did ur last tool, it always saids adb server out-of-date, re running or sth, it does the same in every step, and when it comes to moving files/manipulating permissions, i just get loads of errors
I'm on HBOOT 1.49.0012
P.S. i cant unlock using HTC Unlock method too no matter how many times i try (i read the instructions carefully and followed them closely) but still got unlock token check failed error......

Reboot your device and try again... see edited post above..
Not sure about HTC Unlock method...
For UNLOCKED evos, it will give permanent ROOT access
For LOCKED evos, it will give temporary ROOT access
If you have problem unlocking, try grabbing a RUU file here and reflash your ROM... maybe factory reset wont hurt either...
it has run thru all the process with success, but when i try to open root explorer it show superuser force close???

Also the Same thing happened to me !!!!
Yup, not working here either.
It says it installs everything ok, but when I go to update the su binary, it force closes out. When I use TI backup, it says I don't have root access.
Hope this helps so that we can at least get temp root. I just want to remove the bloatware!
Thanks for the hard work in any event!
tried this on sensation xl and it worked, root access to some apps like root explorer but terminal says access denied. it seems to unmount the internal sd card which programs need to run and only a reboot remounts sdcard but obviously root is gone after reboot. hope one of the XL devs can use this to create a working solution for our XL

dont need to update the SU binary.. just run the scripts and they are good to go...
however, SYSTEM/APP are in locked partition of the bootloader.. you may need to unlock your bootloader first.. but you may remove some in the Data/app llike gmail and stuffs (i prefer Exchange email than using Gmail app)

S-OFF not required.
FULL ROOT if UNLOCKED BOOTLOADERS
TEMP ROOT if LOCKED BOOTLOADERS
Reason : Files in SYSTEM partition are locked, hence changes made are temporary and will be lost after reboot
Yep full root acheived with u.locked bootloader on HTC sensation xl. Confirmed and working

Just tried on my HK Evo3D (HBoot 1.49.0012, completely stock, no HTC unlock) and it works. But it took me a few trials to get it working.
For those who have problems with the script (e.g., permission problems during the script) try:
(In the following steps, make sure ur evo3d is disconnected from ur pc when you reboot it. Just to make sure that it is clean.)
1) reboot your phone
2) run the unroot script
3) reboot once more
4) run the root script "Step 1.bat"
5) *** go into the "files" directory ***, and run the "Step 2.bat"
6) at this step you should see the superuser is installed (check the app drawer)
7) go to Settings to mount your sd card
I have managed to root it and run through a titanium backup successfully. Thanks for the great work!
Though temp root is gained, system is still mounted as read-only
tried these, neither one worked:
1) adb remount
"remount failed: Read-only file system"
2) su; busybox mount -o remount,rw /system
No messages, no errors. But still system is in ro mode:
# busybox mount -o remount,rw /system
busybox mount -o remount,rw /system
# mount | grep system
mount | grep system
/dev/block/mmcblk0p22 on /system type ext4 (ro,relatime,barrier=1,data=ordered)
3) su; fixit; busybox mount -o remount,rw /system
Same result.
Seems, after running "Step 1.bat", the /system is temporary mounted as "rw", (that's why the script could complete without warnings/errors). But after Step 2 finishes, /system is back to "ro" no matter what...
Any insights?

You may have previously attempted some other methods, therefore you need to clean the system first...
If your bootloader is LOCKED, you still can gain TEMPORARY ROOT access and run you Titanium Backup (restore settings, data apps).. however, the SYSTEM partition is still locked, which means, whatever changes you done to the SYSTEM partition (like restoring some SYSTEM apps) will be lost after reboot.
I got forceclose with the superuser.
I dont know why, but i guess the root process was finished
Got temp root and su support with untampered stock (vodafone branding), unlocked bootloader HBoot 1.49.0018 on HTC EVO 3D GSM shooteru
System continues to be (expectedly) in ro mode.
Lost access to SD card, had to reboot to use it again...
Permanently disabled without any problems some apps that were bugging me - Thanks

Thanks for your inputs. But my phone was completely stock and I have never tried other root methods before trying this one.
I observed that, /system actually get rw for a short time after the mount -o remount,rw command in step 1. But somehow it will get back to ro by itself. The time is unpredictable in a sense that sometimes step 1 script cannot finish successfully (cannot copy busybox, su to /system because it changes back to ro so quickly).
I know that the SYSTEM rw is just an overlay and all changes will be gone once rebooted. I am asking this because I just wonder if I could playaround and test something like changing fonts without s-off or HTC unlock.

Yep, it dawned on me and I found that option - now I can use Titan to backup everything
Is there a possibility to add automatic remounting the SD into the script using adb? I am not really familiar with this...

Hey all.
With the latest Jelly Bean roms I can't use "adb remount" anymore and therefore not push files to /system with Windows. All I get is "Operation not permitted".
I was using an ICS Rom before and everything was fine, but now no matter which custom Rom I install, it's not working.
Do I need a special bootloader or something? How can I get this to work?
You dont have the root access yet. You need to execute adb root then adb remount. If granted you can push files.

It's not a custom ROM you need, it's a kernel with a /sbin/adbd in its initramfs that does not drop privileges. I built such a binary for AndreiLux's Perseus kernel so you could flash that. Alternatively, Chainfire's adbd Insecure app that works with any kernel (free on XDA/£ on Google Play) was recently updated and it will replace /sbin/adbd with one that runs as root on each startup.
EDIT: Didn't see the date on the OP's thread. Meh, this is still relevant.
I cannot get the ad blocking host files to stick with this device. I have tried both Adfree Android and Adaway. The host files won't survive a reboot. Sometimes, I apply them and they revert back after a few hours of use. I am just wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue on this device. SU is functioning properly.
Peace
Not exactly the same, but I noticed any app I remove via Titanium Backup gets restored on reboot as well.
Both of these actions require writing to /system, which cannot be done with android booted up, until we have s-off.
Every time I try to write to system (On accident by running some root app without thinking about it) my device reboots. I figured that was normal for a rooted S-on device. That doesn't happen to y'all?

I am pretty sure I was able to do this on the Rezound prior to S off. Also, how can one flash a ROM if your not able to write to the system?
I just want to understand this a little bit better. Thanks.

you can not write to /system with android booted up.
So you can flash a rom in recovery but you cant edit anything in /system while in android

On all the newer phones, HTC (or Verizon) write-locked \system while the phone is booted in android. :good: But you're right, on the Rezound, you could write to \system while still S-ON.
so I guess to debloat, someone will have to make one of those debloating tools that delete through adb.

Screw that who wants that running in the background, run AdFree and update hosts, hook up USB with debugging on and use ADB:
"adb shell" then "su" and grant yourself root. Then "cp /system/etc/hosts /sdcard" then type "exit" and "exit" to get out of the shell.
Then run "adb reboot recovery" and mount /system partition in recovery. Then "adb shell" and "cp /sdcard/hosts /system/etc/hosts" -- exit shell and reboot
Done
Do this or just push the host file http://db.tt/LQAUEcZM to /system/etc/ with the built in TWRP file manager if you don't want to use ADB.

Is anybody having trouble creating this symlink as instructed in AdAway on their Droid DNA?
I type the command and all I get is "ln: /system/etc/hosts: File exists"
I exit, reboot and the app still tells me the symlink is missing.
I'll be the first to admit my adb-fu is weak, probably my fault.
Edit: so, I did it the other way. When the app tells you the symlink failed it still creates a hosts file in data/data. I used TWRP/Advanced/File Manager to move this into system/etc.
Still, it would be nice to get the symlink working and have AdAway update automatically rather than having to go through this process periodically.

This is exactly what I did. I used root explorer to copy the host file from /system/etc and pasted it on the sdcard
Rebooted into recovery, mounted /sdcard and /system and ran adb to push the file
viola! done
^^
I think that's basically doing the same thing I did, but still the symlink would be nice so it could be automatically updated.

Make sure to delete any existing system/etc/hosts and data/data/hosts before you run the command.
Works fine now!

The same thing we've been doing for the past 3 months. Nothing had changed in that respect since kernels with system write enabled came out.

So I ran Kingroot, it went to 100% and using a root checker confirms my phone is rooted, and it assigns permissions to apps that request root. Caveat - / and /system remain readonly, Busybox could not install anything and I have no su binary so no question of doing an adb shell and using mount. Is there a fix?

Already did, doesn't work. You need an su binary first, like I said even the busy box installation failed.
Try RIC Killer app. Sounds like ric is still enabled stopping writing to the system partition. I'm not sure if it would work on lollipop or with kingroot but that's what I'd do. Search XDA for RIC Killer.
