I did that already. I got the rom running perfect besides a few hiccups randomly. I just want to get a wifi tether deal going. I still have my unlimited data and I always downloaded a wifi tether app and r3ds 4.3 I believe is where he said u had to flash the tether fix. I went ahead and flashed the tether fix and now idk what im suppose to use to use my mobile hotspot

The tether fix turns on Verizon provisioning check, so you can use the built in mobile hotspot app.

A handful of my co-workers on various Verizon Android phones were saying that Gingerbread updates stop tethering apps from working, even if rooted and side-loaded.
I would like to try CM7 since it just released, but I can't lose my tethering! Am I worrying about nothing?
I'm using WiFi tether on CM7 and it works fine. You shouldn't have to worry since CM7 is not built by Verizon or anything, so they can't block tethering apps in the OS.

Can you link the wifi tether you use please, and let me know if you changed any settings. I'm rocking MIUI, not sure if that matters or not but doesn't hurt to try.
Thanks

I'm using this WiFi tether app: http://android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com/files/wifi_tether_v3_1-beta2.apk
Once installed, I went to the settings, and changed the Device-Profile to Google NexusOne. Works great and it shouldn't matter if it's CM7 or MIUI.
I'm on the newest miui using wifi tether app with no problems

They are blocking tethering on stock roms, so if you are running CM7/MIUI etc you will be fine.
You may have to sideload. Verizon asked Google to hide certain apps, like PDAnet, from the market. This violates their net neutrality agreement, and they are being sued over it. Verizon stock updates are also set to tattle on you if you tether. If running touchwiz, I believe you need a modified kernel with dummy tether.

For devices the Verizon is giving an official Gingerbread build, they are slipping in ways to disable Wireless Tether. It's also hidden in the market, but it's easy to find an APK to install yourself. However, if you're running Gingerbread on the fascinate, you're doing it on a custom ROM, which doesn't have that nasty bit of Verizon code.

I am 99% certain I know the answer to this, but I just want to be 100% sure;
I am running SuperClean 3 Milestone 1, TW Launcher, and KGB Kernel with Voodoo enabled on my Fascinate. I just installed http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wireless_tether_2_0_7.apk, but haven't tried it yet. Is Verizon going to know if I am tethering with this configuration?
Thanks!
I think it honestly depends.
If you are using it to seach the web and do basic surfing than i dont think it matters to them.
If you start streaming Netflicks at HD quality or Bit Torrents [heavy bandwidth], they might suspect something.
I have used both the wifi tether and barnacle on ICS and GB for quick and dirty usage and i have never had VZW say a thing to me.
That is just my personal experience.
My $0.02:
I am running SC3 Milestone 2 and the KGB FA16 Kernel and have had no trouble tethering with my tablet or laptop using wifi tether 3.1 Beta 6.
You can pick your Beta flavor for the app using the link CCampos provided.
I have not tethered. Though I want to. (Hotspot feature) don't want Verizon to suspect something and then charge me.
Can't they charge me if they find out?
If I'm running CM7, will they still know?

My (very limited) understanding as of right now is that a custom ROM alone is not enough to keep Verizon in the dark. A think you need a custom kernel as well to be safe, and never use the Verizon hot spot app. Am I right?

Maybe Verizon can't block you from tethering with this app, but can they monitor if you are? And then hit you with a charge later, or drop you from service?
My. 02 cents.....I use an App called Open Garden Wifi with no problems at all.

Just throwing this out there: I've never seen any *confirmed* reports of Verizon retroactively charging customers for "illegal" tethering, or ending your service/contract. Not sure why people get so worried about getting caught, it's not like the phone police are gonna come take you to jail.
If I'm wrong on this and Verizon is in fact charging those who tether (who don't pay Verizon's tethering charge) or terminating their contracts, I'd love to see evidence to the contrary.
I ran up 18 gb last month. From Xbox live and other teathering because its my only access. Never have issues.

Alright, Currently I have the 2.3.4 gingerbread version of the Atrix rooted. For some reason I can not get any of the wireless tethering root apps to work. This includes Wireless tether for root users, wifi tether and barnacle. None of these would work on my previous 2.2.2 root either. Any help? the logs say the programs are running fine but none of my devices can pick up the phone. This includes laptops and me Eee Pad. I have changed the SSID, added and removed wep. I do not know what I am doing wrong....
I know this probably won't help much but the same thing was happening to me when I first rooted my Atrix and the Wireless Tether app. I turned off the password and everything worked fine after that. I can always see who is trying to connect to my network anyway so I know if anybody is trying to steal my network.

Why not root and change the entitlement check then use the built in mobile hotspot app.

They can tell much easier that you are tethering without a plan if you are using custom APN's.
The custom apn will not work on gingerbread. The ota will not allow changes like froyo did.

I got slightly different issue, wireless tether for root - clients can see the AP and connect at layer 2, but refuse to take a DHCP address and never actually get an IP address. This happens both with and without encryption.
Too cheap to buy sqlite editor to do the mod
so what's the easiest solution to get tethering to work for someone who updated firmware of the phone to latest version to get rid of random reboots?
how would one get tethering to work? do i have to root it? can i do it somehow without rooting it? like there was a hack for droidx or something similar?
and if root the only one choice which is best tested app to use for that?

Root and use wireless tether
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
two options really...
First... If you are STOCK, then pay VZW to add the Mobile Broadband Connect feature (aka Mobile Hot Spot) to your account, and use the Built in Mobile Hot Spot app.
Why do this? you don't have to root or anything.. and you wan to abide by VZW's Terms of Service (TOS).
Second.. If you are rooted and/or using a custom rom, then use the link that Deltaechoe posted to install "Wifi Tether for Root"
Why do this? You just want to tether and don't care about VZW's TOS, or you accept any possible consequences for violating VZW's TOS should they decide to take action (I'm not saying VZW will do anything, but there is always that chance so use at your own risk... And I'm not going to debate if its right, wrong, ok, not ok, etc).

will I still have the speeds provided by the tethering?
Using stock rom 2.3.6, is it possible to tether with apps like barancle or wifi tether? Doesn't seem to work for me, the phone is rooted.
If the answer is no, is there a Rom available with the wifi hotspot avail? I miss it from my Tbolt.

This is not my work but I found a guide that seems easy to follow and it worked for me. After installing the leaked ICS I could not get any wifi tether app to work
Rumor has it that a simple SQlite edit enables the factory built in mobile hotspot. Again I take no credit for this work, I just found a guide
I'm sure there are others and I will edit this post from my computer when I get home to get credit where its due

It is supposed to turn wifi off.... It is the router or hotspot or however you see it.
So nobody has gotten the wifi tether app from gb to work?
So this allows you to use the Mobile Hotspot app for free? Or do you mean it just allows you to use it on this phone? Might also want to clarify that before people start getting charged extra tethering charges.
You can use googles wireless tether beta 11 to wireless tether. You have to change the device profile to samsung galaxy nexus lte cdma then change the setup method to netd (master) then you will be able to tether without changing the entitlement value

Mine was working. I recently changed to a different ROM.. the SQlite hack works flawlessly so you can use the stock wifi tether app.
If you go the sqlite way you have to be using version 1.5 or you get that error 14 code. Also the beta 11 version won't work for the nook because its not an lte device. But it does work for leaked ics because that's what I'm running
