Newbie question about ROMs - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay so just got my Thunderbolt rooted the other day. (Thanks to the santod and disconnecktie!)
I went on and flashed stock ICS just so I could have a workable phone until I had time to sit down and look at other ROMS. So searching around I found CyanogenMod, and it seems neat but apparently doesn't work on the Thunderbolt.
So what is a good alternative. I'm honestly not really sure what I'm looking for at this point other than doing cool stuff with my phone. All the stuff you can do in Cyanogen seemed pretty awesome.
Thanks in advance.

The best alternative to have a decently usable phone would be unsense over at Infected.

Okay, this leads to another couple of questions in the interest of not messing up...
What does this mean?
"The Add-ons that YOU MUST flash after the rom has booted once are also being updated.
Please redownload them when you download the rom. "
Does it do this automatically? Do I need to flash a bunch of stuff?
And this..I think the only thing I have installed is OTA killer, but shouldn't basically everything be wiped?
"No mods made for the stock rom should be flashed to these custom roms. "
Or is it just not to install anything after you flash the ROM?

Can't restore backups

Here's my situation. When I first unlocked and rooted, I made a nandroid backup of the stock, pre ota Rom. I then installed ineffabilis 1.0 and made a backup of that. I'm currently on Nils ICS Rom but I need to restore to one of my gb backups. I'm using amon ra.
I tried restoring both of my backups with the same results. They seem to restore with no errors but I get stuck at a blank screen after the splash screen. I can only restore to my ICS backup.
So I tried it a couple more times, this time restoring the backup then flashing the 1.02 kernel. But I still get the same results, a blank screen after the splash screen. I don't see any errors, no main version is older garbage. It just doesn't work. I've read every thread I can find and just don't know what to do to restore a gb Rom.
I finally tried just a fresh install of ineffabilis gb and got the same thing.
Any ideas?

I think you may need to flash a GB kernel after installing the GB ROM (or restoring your backup). My understanding is the ICS ROMS require a different kernal, and the GB ROMS don't overwrite it automatically. there's a pretty good thread stickied in the Dev section that has links to several kernels.

That shouldn't affect getting the ROM on there though. It only affected my wifi.
Silver, I was able to both restore my GB Ineffabilis nand and flash it fresh after OTA. Don't know why you are having trouble.

Hmm. Apparently reading comprehension is not your strongest skill. I said I read every thread in here and still could not get it to work. But thanks for not helping me out at all.
Anyway. I did finally get it to work. I had to do a clean install then flash the kernel provided with the Rom. Which I know I had tried a couple days ago too. But it worked this time. But I still wasn't able to do a nand restore. My backups could be fubar maybe. Thanks guys

Did you try flashing a GB kernel first? I may have done that before restoring or flashing the GB ROM, can't recall. But it's worth a shot.

I think we posted at the same time. Lol. It's working now. I tried every combo I could think of. Kernel them Rom. Rom then kernel. I was using a kernel from another thread but it wasnt working for me. I had to flash the Rom and kernel from that Rom.

Yeah, you snuck a little edit in on me!
I didn't have trouble getting the ROM on but I couldn't get my wifi working until I flashed the exact same kernel as I had before, no other GB kernel would get wifi going. Finicky little phone.
Glad to see you're back up and running!

Newb ROM question

Somewhat of an Amaze newbie here, but so far the community and information here have been incredibly helpful, so I'm hoping someone can help with my next question.
I've been thinking about popping my ROM cherry and installing one of the custom ROMs here - more specifically the Energy and/or SpeedROM. I have the latest files for both, am rooted, currently using 4ext Recovery, with S-On. I've already performed a Nandroid and full backup with Titanium Backup, and from what I can tell should be ready to take the plunge. I just wanted to make sure that there isn't anything I'm forgetting or need to know before I take the custom route.
Thanks again for all the hard work and assistance!

Always wipe before install, but you're good.
Lol at popping rom cherry, have fun.
Just make sure your already on the ICS OTA update before installing custom roms. The OTA update updates the radios and some other system partitions that need to be updated prior to ics being installed. Best of luck with everything. I'm on NRG but Speed Rom is about to be I installed soonish.

Cool, I think I have that part covered as I'm currently running ICS 4.0.3, so hopefully that won't prove to be an issue.
One other quick question: Will this affect the Google Play Store? As in, since I would be running an unofficial ROM, would I be unable to connect to the store to download/update apps?

You will still be able to connect to the Play Store.
For some rom, you have to add the APN for data to work.
Since your new at thus don't go with any alpha betas or release clients make sure to go with something pretty stable til u get the hang of this dont wanna brick your phone and not know how to fix it :-\ I bricked my phone like 10 times with some of these roms pretty scary lol. Speed rom 7 is pretty good . If you have any more questions or anything feel free to post or pm me. Good luck

ROMS

I am kinda new to all this. I just inherited the thunderbolt from my brother bc my other phone is dead. I am rooted and s-off running santod's Official Thunderbolt ICS deoxed debloated. My question was if I am able to switch to one of the older ROMS like NuSense ROM or UnSense ROM or anyone for that matter that I feel like. I know the process of flashing since I have gotten this far, but I don't want to flash these and then be in some sort of loop with problems.. Thanks in advance:good: Also are radios universal or.. I keep seeing people say just try a different one?
You can flash any ROM you like.
As for radios, look in the post about the ROM, they usually specify what radio is best for that ROM. The newest radio is defiantly needed for the new crop of ICS ROMs based on the official OTA as the older radios cause issues.
Only thing I can add to the first response... Always make a backup first. So when you somehow get into a bad flash/bootloop situation, you have an easy way back to a working device. Also verify your download by checking it's md5 code before you flash. Almost (if not all) files you download will have it listed with the download link on the forum op you're getting it from.

First time installing a custom ROM, I need some hand holding

Hey folks.
The S4 is my first smartphone. Ever. I rooted it a few weeks ago and have been playing with different tools and utilities. I love the extra control it gives me.
Been using Smartlauncher Pro as my launcher as well, but it doesn't give me the customization I want. I dig the UI though, it's minimalist just the way I like.
I've been keeping my eye out for ROM's I can try out, and I think I want to try Cynogen for the S4. However, I am terrified of destroying my investment. I've read horror stories of flashes gone wrong... I don't want to permanently brick my device.
Is there anyone here who can hold my hand while I install my ROM? I seriously have no idea what I'm doing, instructions or no.
...I sound so pathetic right now.
Thanks folks.

Do you have a custom recovery installed like TWRP or CWM? If you do all you need to do is download the rom (I put them on ext sd)....and gapps if your flashing cyanogen, boot into recovery, make a backup (I put this on my ext sd card too), wipe, flash rom, flash gapps and reboot.

Hi!
The first thing you need to find out is what build number you have. This will tell you if you are able to root and install recovery in order to put a new rom on the phone. Do NOT update your phone by the over the air update that is currently available! To find your build number go to settings: the more tab: about phone, then scroll down. If you have JDQ39.I545VRUAME7 then you are in the same boat as many of us and accidently did the upgrade which at this moment has no way to root. If you haven't done the upgrade than you need to find one of the many threads on here that will walk you through the process.
Hope this helps some, there are others on here that can give you a much more detailed walkthrough of how to root if you are on the correct older build.
The best advice I can give is to read the entire original post (OP) for the ROM you like, and as much of the thread as you can. 9 times out of 10 when someone has a problem with the ROM it's been discussed, and is often listed in the OP. Usually there are step by step instructions on installing the ROM. I believe there's a general ROM flashing guide in this forum somewhere as well.
Good luck and have fun :good:

That's good! You haven't been updated which means you can still flash ROMs. Are you familiar with both types of ROMs, TouchWiz and AOSP? CyanogenMod is an AOSP ROM, which will be completely different from what you're running right now, TouchWiz. You're rooted, but have you installed a custom recovery? You need one to flash ROM's, either TWRP or CWM. You can also make a nandroid backup in recovery, and if anything goes wrong, you can go back to exactly how you are now. Definitely read the OP of the ROM thread multiple times and follow the flashing instructions correctly.

If anything goes wrong with the flash in the next step, go to restore and you'll be back to how you are now.
Did you download the ROM to your phone along with Gapps? For AOSP Roms you need a separate gapps package, which is Google apps.

I checked out the Cyanogenmod site, apparently there's no stable versions for the VZW GS4?
Oh wells, flash anyway! That's what I do!
Worst case scenario, you have to use Odin to get back to stock. I used to keep a nandroid on my PC for just in case scenarios as well. One time on my GNex I flashed something really bad and had to adb pull everything off my phone, wipe the whole thing, and start over.

Thread cleaned of useless comments.
Thread is also closed - as XDA, even though full of helpful and nice people, is not a direct support site.
Users are expected to do some reading before they post and blatantly ask for hand holding. And, as you have seen, other users have a tendency to not be so nice and make trolling comments because of that.
This is a development site and is about development - so, please, study up first, then post questions based from what you have learned.

My recommendation as far as ROMs go is Eclipse Progressive Build 7. Everyone has an opinion, but I think it is the most staple and smooth ROM out there for the S4. Every function / detail works, great on battery and updated routinely by the Developer. There is an Eclipse ROM on this Forum, but that is not the ROM I recommend. The Eclipse version I am referring to can only be downloaded from the Developer's site. If you're MDK you won't need SafeStrap to flash it. Go here for the ROM: http://www.elementalxdesigns.com/ec...-Loki-amp-Safestrap-Progress-Build07-(1-28-14).
I recommend liquid smooth 4.4 if you rather aosp. Been running it for a while now and it's great.

I've run a number of AOSP ROMs, there are some good ones out there. Although from my experience the TW ROMs run smoother with less lag / hesitation...and everything works. I've heard a number of other S4 users report the same thing. It's not that the other ROMs don't run, they just don't seem to run as smooth and some of them have at least one or two things that don't work "just right".

I mostly agree with you there. Usually TW will be more stable depending on what the Dev has added or removed.
However lately on my Sprint S4 AOSP has treated me better. Particularly Liquid Smooth ( I know I should just be a LS spokesman )
