Hey Guys,
Had a problem with my Galaxy S3-I9300, it wasn't charging, turning off on it's own, wouldn't turn on and etc.
I took my phone to a repair shop where I still had insurance. They fixed the phone and everything looked good until I tried updating my firmware, then I found out they rooted my phone without even telling me.
When I asked them why the did it they said that they changed some "electrical component" and without root my phone won't have any reception and internet (is that even possible?).
My questions are:
Is it true what they are telling me?
Can I still update my firmware some how?
Can I unroot the phone for the firmware update and then root it again?
Update:
I just got an update from the store that when they "fixed" the problem, the electronic number (IEMI?) disappeared and that's why they didn't have a reception, to get it back they had to use root.
How is that even possible?
I really appreciate your help, I really don't know who else to ask about this.
Thank you!

1. No, root has nothing to do with reception (Unless they changed your radio - which could be possible, but still nothing related to root)
2. Yes, use Odin and flash the stock firmware from http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares - you'll need to register.
3. Yes, but better to just use point 2.
Good luck!

Its simple. If your phone is rooted, and you have a custom recovery create a FULL nandroid backup and save it to your PC. Then read the unrooting thread and completely unroot your phone. First by running triangle away app reset your flash counter, then factory reset your phone, and flash the latest firmware available for your country(you can also cross check modem and CSC codes) via odin. All details are in the thread i mentioned. If the issues fixed by the company show up, reroot your phone and flash a custom recovery like CWM. Copy the nandroid backup to phone and restore. No harm done and you will find out if they are lying or not.
To update OTA you need to be fully stock and unrooted. Otherwise you can downlaod the firmware for your device at www.sammobile.com and flash via odin. As for your last question yes you can but there isnt much practicality in that.

It does not and if your phone has been rooted then its a non genuine Samsung repair as root voids warranty .STICKYS

I got fed up waiting for the latest update on my O2 S2 so thought i'd try the 2.3.4 update. I didn't at this time realise it was an XEU firmware.
Using Odin was straight forward and I completed the flash and started using the phone. I got some unexpected lag and thought i'd revert back to the original firmware but it is this that is causing me a problem.
I attempted the reflash with the O2 firmware (KE7),
I now get the O2 bubbles on start up (which was replaced but a fragmentated S on 2.3.4, official samsung I believe) and in phone settings its says 2.3.3 however when I connect to Kies it says the CSC is XEU and not 02.
I tried the '272' imei trick but only get 1 option XEU.
Can anybody please help me revert my phone back to original???
Here's hoping somebody can help..
Branded rom /provider rom post or how to debrand O2 phone posts from Dev section .
Essentially flash the O2 firmware through Odin

Thanks for the reply. I 'think' i have solved it now. I had flashed it with Odin but only once i had cleared the partition cache did Kies show the right firmware.
It does mean i have lost all of my apps so now am looking at a good backup app.
Any suggestions for a non rooted phone?

You can't backup apps unless your rooted as these live on the root of your phone.
You can root and keep the phone stock and not flash any custom roms.
Im on o2 uk. Had the xeukd1 csc before i switched.
If any of my friends asked me i would tell them to root and install a custom rom and kernel.
The themes and tweaks available are great. The biggest thing for me is the battery life. I now get only 1% battery drain overnight (7 hours) someone else on the same rom and kernel went over 6 days without charge.
Never would have got this before.

Many thanks for the reply.
It certainly sounds very interesting. I am new to rooting only having learnt about the basics of it over the past couple of days.
I presume therefore that should the need ever arise restoring the phone to its original firmware spec (as at time of purchase, and should warranty work be required) is possible?
I think I need to go and read some more on rooting.

Go to intratech's thread in original android development find out what firmware modem and csc you're using download and keep in a safe place. This is then your return to factory settings if you have a warranty issue.
If you need any help pm me as I won't always be popping in to this thread.

Can anyone help me get back to my XXK14 firmware temorarily so I cans restore sms and call logs?

Saw this link earlier but the XXK14 download link is broken and I'm not knowledgable as to what other stock roms I can use here in the U.S. on AT&T (not sure that carrier is an issue other than the fact ATT is GSM / HSPA+ 21 Mbps). I'd really appreciate directions to an alternate XXK14 link and/or another compatible GB 2.3.5 stock firmware.

Here is what you need to do
1. Get Check FUS downloader: LINK
2. Run FUS Select you Carrier / Region / Model and Download the Stock firmware for your phone.
3. Backup anything you need. You will need to wipe the data and the cache from Recovery mode before you flash the downloaded Fware..
4. Use ODIN and Flash the Downloaded Stock Firmware to your phone. You will loose the root access and you should have your stock back. Yeah before Install Wipe data and cache.
Lemme know if that works. If any doubt... just ask. Dont do anything wrong i'll try to help if i know the answer.

Hi guys,
I'm a newbie so please bare with me. I have a Virgin Mobile UK Samsung Galaxy S2 which was on Gingerbread 2.3.4 or 5. I foolishly flashed it yesterday to yes you guessed it, ICS 4.0.3. Now as far as the phone itself is concerned, everything is working pefectly fine. No issues whatsoever except now I've noticed that my carrier has changed to T-Mobile UK even though the phone has full functionality on the Virgin network still? Also I get the "This device cannot download firmware" message now when connected to Kies.
Have I totally ruined my phones chances of downloading any official firmware in the furture now? And how can I correct the display of my carrier? I'm guessing I will have to find a stock ROM from somewhere and re-install. But doesn't that do something to a ROM install counter someware on the phone?
Thank you in advance.

You are fine. Nothing has gone wrong. Use the FUS and get the stock firmware for you phone. Flash it via ODIN... Read the above few posts.
For your Flash counter and Bin counter, You can reset it back to zero. Look for Triangle.apk . TO use that you need to have a rooted device. Super user permissions... so run Triangle while you have rooted device? If not then root it to reset the bin or flash counter ( If you want) or just flash back the stock Fware..
No you havent ruined you phone. You can download all official firmwares. Just wait for the offical ICS for your region.
Hi,
Thanks for the quick reply. So just to clarify... If I re-install the stock firmware there will be no need to root the device and install the program that resets the counters?
Also, I've noticed that Virgin Mobile UK isn't listed under my territory?
Thanks again.

yes try the kies method first before sending for repair.
but i dont think it will solve by kies update if you got the brick by flashing wrong cfautoroot.
maybe if you got the brick from flashing rom maybe it can be fix,

you dont have warranty on your phone? if you have, you dont have to pay for service repair for it in claiming warranty.
Dear everyone,
i am getting in the next days the samsung galaxy s3 and i would like to prepare myself about what i should do to root the phone (and save the EFS folder).
I had from a colleague a samsung galaxy s2 which lost the IMEI and EFS folder, that's why i know that is crucial to save all. Plus i excercised on it to root the phone.
On the SG S2 i routed the phone loading the "philz-touch_3.00_i9100-signed.zip" with the phone and then applying the "Root_SuperSU.0.98-Busybox.1.20.2-signed.zip".
Phone was magically simple rooted and as simple as that, could be again unrooted.
Now, I am checking what to do for the samsung galaxy s3, but it seems that the procedure is not so simple and riskless anymore.
I read almost everywhere that the procedure is the one found on this website http://techverse.net/root-samsung-galaxy-s3-android-4-3-jellybean/
The procedure descripted asks me to use odin and from my experience with SG S2, this is there for reflashing the phone, or better to put a new rom in it. So if i did not understand wrong, with that procedure i basically put a new rom that is rooted. Am i right?
this is not really a good solution for me, as the unroot would not work good anymore.
Searching then deeper in the xda forum, i find this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/orig-development/i93xx-philz-touch-t2002953
So this seems to be much more similar to the one i applied to my sg s2.
Now the question is, why if this is much more simple, is so less shown as a solution and result on google?
is that "philz_touch_xxx.zip" + "Root_SuperSU.0.98.Only-signed.zip" for rooting the SG S3 as easy as with the S2?
Sorry if this question might have been already posted and answered. i just could not find it in the forum.
Thank you in advance for your attention!

So you mean that can be easily rooted with the files "philz_touch_xxx.zip" + "Root_SuperSU.0.98.Only-signed.zip" ?
does it flash a new rom somehow or just makes the device rooted?

ok so basically i just have to press volume up, home, power on button, open the CMW in the sd ("philz_touch_xxx.zip"), then from there apply the zip file "Root_SuperSU.0.98.Only-signed.zip".
correct?
sorry that i ask over and over, but i cannot brick this phone
You can't install philz recovery from the stock recovery, you would need to flash the .tar version with odin -so you would be better to use CF autoroot as recommended in the sticky guides.

should have it been done also with the samsung galaxy S2 or this is new of the S3?
S2 and S3 are totally different, don't try anything that worked on the S2.

ok, so just to repeat, i install the custom recovery CMW, then i have to use odin to flash the rom?
this means that i will have a different rom from the original one? what changes actually? what information i need to know what is the original rom on the phone?
isn't there any way to root the phone keeping the original rom?

WOW thank you so much! I read it and now i have much clearer ideas.
SO: i will just root installing a custom recovery, but no room. perfect and clear like water.
Now i have a question that might have been answered in those threads but i just did not see it (or i would not ask i promise):
If i let the samsung galaxy S3 android upgrade to the latest android version through the official tool KIES, and THEN i make the root, so i have the latest android version, is it possible? If yes, can i use the same tools indicated in http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/general/ref-understanding-basics-rooting-s3-gt-t2362743 ?
Thank you for the links!

AWESOME!! so that means also that if would ever come out any future android upgrade, in order to upgrade officially i should unroot the device, restore the stock recovery, update via kies and then re-root again. I think i got the whole thing!!

I was checking on the samsung galaxy S2 (previous phone) the CMW installed. There, in backup and restore, there is "backup" "restore" "delete"....
is that backup the NANDROID backup? if so, why isn't that clear like idiot prove (like me ) ?
Okay. Flash cf auto root in odin. Just go download mode on ur fone, then connect it to the pc. Then just flash the cfautoroot file in odin. No nid for cwm. Flash cwm AFTER u flash cfautoroot in odin.

ok you wrote really nice, but i don't understand what i should do after connecting it to the pc. You wrote "then just flash the cfautoroot file in odin", but isn't it what you wrote me at the beginning?
Instead of asking people to write out exactly what you want to do, just go and follow the guide -they are provided for that reason to help new users safely root etc.
