[Q] 4.3: cf auto root, triangle away and Ota - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there, I'm not so experienced so far but I'd like to root my Galaxy S3 All stock with 4.3 build, I9300XXUGMK6 (unbranded italian). So far I understood that as long as I only want to run some root apps, I can use cf auto root and mantain all stock, 'cause it will reinstall stock recovery. Then I want to know if triangle away works on 4.3 (recently has been updated to 3.26).
After that will I be able to get OTA, as long as the system files are stock and the only difference is the root and some root apps? Can someone confirm this? Thanks everyone.

Yes to CF auto root, yes to triangle away, no to ota -it won't update if you have modified your phone.

Are you sure? There's much confusion in this forum about ota with root, some say that it is possible to get it, if the reovery and the rom are full stock, only there's the possibility to lose root... In fact, there is an option, in SuperSU, which allows to mantain root even after OTA, so I guess it's posible to get it... Am I wrong?

Sure lets put it this way 99% of posts that have OTA problems are rooted and the install fails .
Via the method you post just going to have to try it as i have only seen one claiming it works .
But as i don't have OTA i cannot test .

Thank you for the answer. So assuming Ota not possible, after reset flash counter with triangle away if I want to download it or to claim warranty back I'll only have to flash a stock firmware with odin and it's done? Right?

[Q] Device Status: Modified = No OTA?

Guys, When I bought my phone, it was locked under the carrier. So I went to the store where i bought it and had it open line. When it was open line, the guy rooted my phone. It's still in the stock though. No custom rom was flashed etc. My device status says modified. Will i still receive the Official OTA for Jellybean?

Hi...
Someone please correct me if Im wrong but... I dont believe it is possible to "root" this device WITHOUT flashing an insecure kernel (CF Kernel) through Odin which may indeed be the reason your device says modified...
Now, I believe you will still get the OTA notification IF you stay on the STOCK ROM but... DONT try and update it while rooted or I believe it will not work properly. You would need to remove root to do the OTA update.
Again, If I am wrong, someone please correct me but I believe this is how this will work.
Thanks,
Stock reply
Samsung updates OTA fails if rooted .
Use Kies and then root again .
You say When it was open line, the guy rooted my phone
Whoever rooted your phone should not have done so as it breaks warranty .

Yes you can. After the update you will lose root...so you will have to root again

It is possible..CF-Root roots your phone without modifying the kernel. The device says modified because during rooting a custom recovery is also being flashed. You can update with Kies while rooted..nothing bad will happen..You will only lose the root

You would like to get stock firmware, but you are allready on stock... So what do you really want to do?
But if you're asking for future sake, if you are rooted. You just need to use triangle away, flash stock rom and factory reset.
No need to remove root from SuperUser.
Sorry to clear it up what it is. I took my phone in for a repair today but all they did was flashed it leaving the count at 1. I want it back to 0 so i need to root.

[Q] 4.3 update problems

Updated my unlocked rooted phone yesterday. Didnt realise it wouldnt root. Tries chainfires root and it goes through the motions but doesnt mount the internal SD card so no root.
Its very slow to wake up but otherwise seems ok. My problem is I really want root so if I cant would like to go back to my old firmware but have been told you cant go back.
Downloaded the superuser apk as advised in another post but it wont install from recovery as cannot see internal sd. Am stuck can anyone help please?
Use CF auto root, not the old version.
Or flash a rooted rom.

Yes it was the latest cf autoroot that I used. Would like to stay with this but root it or return to older firmware.
I dont really wish to flash a custom rom yet.
I meant a stock rom, but already rooted:

SGH-M819N (Metro PCS) Mega update via Kies

I'm seeing an available firmware upgrade via kies (MK7).
I'm a little skeptical to try it. Has anyone else upgraded to this firmware?
If so, have you been able to root your mega and install a custom recovery after the upgrade?
I don't want to install this firmware upgrade only to find out that afterwards that knox is on it and prevents me from rooting the phone or unlocking the bootloader.
By the way, I tried downloading the firmware without my phone connected but kies keeps force closing on me before the download is complete.
I'm afraid to connect my phone and try the download because I think it will automatically install the upgrade which I don't want to do until I'm sure I can re-root it and re-install TWRP.

I bit the bullet and gave it a shot. I am happy to report that the firmware upgrade was successful using Kies, I was able to root the device via the Kingo Root app, and was able to re-install TWRP. I am now on firmware M819NUVUAMK7. It is still Android version 4.2.2, and the baseband is also M819NUVUAMK7. The kernel version is dated Fri Nov 22, 2013
I installed superSU and when I ran it, it asked me if I wanted to disable knox (YES OR NO). OF COURSE I DISABLED KNOX!!
I afterward performed a nandroid backup in TWRP (the first order of business).
I am more comfortable now deleting, freezing, uninstalling system apps now because (in the event of a softbrick or bootloop) I can always revert to my nandroid backup or in extreme cases, restart all over again by re-installing the firmware via Kies, re-rooting the device via the kingo root app, and reinstalling TWRP via ODIN.
Not sure what changed from the original firmware (no change log). In any event, the device is snappy and I'm not experiencing any lags.

as far as i know. there isn't a mod for Metro's phone. there are a few custom ROM's you can use that have free tethering built in. This one is the closest to stock. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2608110

well easiest way is. if its your stock ROM that came with the phone when you bought it. it is odex.
if you are rooted, you can use root explorer to go into your system/app file and see if it shows odex settings for apps
I did and had no problem rooting with kingo. What I cannot find is a way around sim lock without going through metro and that sucks.

Almost had a heart attack from this upgrade. My phone was already rooted when I applied the update from Kies. Everything went through fine except when it restarted, I couldn't turn on Wifi at all and I was getting an E in the cell signal. I managed to download the TWRP tar file and Kingo app to root again. I was able to restore my previous backed up image and everything was when I last left it! WHEW!
That's strange. I had no problem. wifi worked and I haven't seen E at all (only 4g lte or 4g). My signal appears to be stronger and more stable with this update than with the original firmware (most of the time I have full bars). As mentioned I don't know what changes were made (no change log around) but this is my observation so far.

This string is present on my phone in download mode:
BOOTLOADER RP SWREV: 3
I have no lines displaying anything about KNOX.
In titanium backup I froze knox 1.0, knox notification manager 1.0, and knox store 1.0.
So it appears that knox is in the rom somewhere but it's had no impact on me. I'm rooted, have twrp installed and have flashed multiple custom roms on my device (both tw and aosp based roms).
Perfect, thanks! Glad you guys got spared from the horrid new Knox bootloaders. There's a small chance that the M819 can be downgraded to the older bootloader to remove Knox entirely, but if the update came with the newest bootloader (I got stuck with it on my i527M) there is no hope at all of downgrading.
Thanks to whoever posted this and the creator of this rom

How do I update software on a rooted Note 3?

so my questions are; Is it worth going through the trouble of updating, and if so, how do I go about doing it???

Since you are rooted, you can just goto the Android development forum and use rwilco's one step to go back completely stock and then take the ota (may or may not work to get the ota) or just goto the Android development forum and use one of the methods there to upgrade to KK.

I read that rooting a phone changes the KNOX counter and, after unrooting, the KNOX counter remains changed so that updates are not possible OTA. Unfortunately, I cannot post the link but it is on the galaxynote3root.com website.
Would someone care to comment on this, please?
My Note3 is rooted at the moment and, before unrooting to update, I would like to know whether after unrooting, the update problem still exists or not
Hope you understand and someone can help. Thanks.

Just flash back to stock using Odin then reboot into stock recovery and wipe data .... you will need to have your SD card removed for it to work also .... you may then have to reflash the Odin rom again and you will have official status and be able to accept ota or just use the nc5 Odin tar and you are good
..
The KNOX counter has nothing to do with it ... it's the official status

And, what is "the nc5 Odin tar"?

No you have to be unrooted to take an OTA update. But there are other options. First what version of KitKat are you on ? If you are on say 4.4.2 NC5 and you want to get to 4.4.4 NH7 or 4.4.4 NK4, you can unroot your device and take the OTA. Or you can flash a complete new version of KitKat 4.4.4 with odin, and then root your device again.
However, if you are rooted on 4.4.2 NC5 with TowelRoot, and no custom recovery installed. Chances are you have not tripped KNOX yet. So, if you update to 4.4.4 NH7 or NK4 or install a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM you will trip KNOX. Here is my thread for more info http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-3-sprint/general/samsung-note-3-rom-flashin-basics-t2896440 .
As for recording conversations have you checked the play store for an app here is a link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.killermobile.totalrecall&hl=en Enjoy !!!
Many thanks. All I really wanted was to be able to record conversations. I tried 4 of the apps listed in the Play store. 2 of them recorded just my side of a conversation with blanks where the other side should be - and the other 2 just recorded static. Total Recall works like a charm though. Thanks again.

I'm in the same boat, I've got an app I need to run, but can't due to the version difference. I used Odin with one click flash (no data loss) to root. Awesome because I didn't loose any apps or any data whatsoever. My question is this, being I'm already rooted with MJ4 by TWRP. Is there a way to upgrade without losing my data (apps , contacts or any sort of complete reset that loses everything) or having to unroot?
My apologies on not knowing this well enough, can I flash the newer version as it is, or will that cause an issue? I'm not even sure what version we're currently on.
Thank you for your work and all that has gone into creating these tools and available sources for us to work on our phones.
Bump
Any thoughts?
