[Q] Galaxy S2 Won't factory reset - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I am having some issues with my SGS2 and wondered if anyone had any suggestions before i send it back for repair. It is a stock sim free UK model, not rooted. There is no SD card installed just the internal 16gbyte flash.
I was noticing more force closes on apps than normal so i decided to reboot the phone. I then noticed that my recent text messages had disappeared back to the 19th Jan. So after sending some more i rebooted the phone again and they had gone..I then deleted all the text messages and sent some more, rebooted the phone and the old ones were back and the new ones had gone back to the same date.
I thought i would then just factory reset the phone and start over again. However it won't factory reset. It goes through the motions and sends me to the bootloader screen where i wipe data and clear cache. However still it refuses to delete the stuff on the phone or factory reset it!
Things i have tried..
-Factory reset both with security menu and keypad sequence
-Reset by going to bootloader from cold boot and wiping data and cache
-Mouting it as a usb flash drive in use developer mode and formatting the drive through windows (even this doesn't get rid of the photos on the flash drive)
-reflashing the default firmware with odin
Basically i cannot do anything to the phone to make it reset or delete any of the things on it. I can go into the gallery and delete all the photos but as soon as you reboot they are all back!
I don't want to root the phone to try and solve the problem as it may need to go back but as an engineer it is frustrating being beaten by a phone, so i wanted to see if i could get any advice from here.
Thanks in advance.

Help :crying:

I don't know if it's possible in the standard android recovery, but can you go into recovery, then mounts and storage, mount system, format system and do the same for data and cahe (mount and format). Everything will be lost! Then flash your firmware again through odin.

It looks to me that you've tried everything you could for a non rooted device.

[Q] Cant seem to factory/data reset -remove encryption

I am a noob looking to try out the touchwiz rom,
My 10.1 is encrypted and trying to remove the encryption using the menu option in settings- factory data reset - it just reboots like nothing happened and asks for the password (I wanted to turn off/get rid of the encryption). I get a box open and android icon for a brief moment at reboot.
Using ClockworkMod Recovery v4.0.0.4 the wipe/factory reset option selected and it errors on the mounting /data. Can't mount or format /data too.
This 10.1 retail has a locked bootloader and is rooted.
Anybody? So far not bricked, ,
got it
I used odin and followed instructions here- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1119492
I lost clockworkmod and it did not recognize my password on reboot, but it did let me wipe everything.
You might have to wipe user data to get rid of the encryption. But you will loose all ur data
<bump>
I'm having the same trouble - and no amount of flashing various stock or CWM recovery gets me to a point where I can actually format / remove the encrypted partition.
The device had been rooted - and then encrypted - and it wasn't until I attempted to reboot into recovery with CWM (hoping to perform a factory reset) that I got into a boot loop.
Days, and countless flashing later - I'm no closer. The one thing I find interesting: when I flash particular (CWM) recovery / images, and reboot - I actually get the 'pre-boot authentication' page, which still accepts my encryption passphrase. It's after this point - that I'm just staring at a black screen.
Perhaps nvflash might be the right tool for the job - so off to learn about THAT. Every day, a new adventure - and another twist down the rabbit hole.
Thanks in advance to anyone with some insight / links / tips to share.

I'm facing what I think is a similar problem on an AT&T Galaxy s3 i747 with Paranoid Android. I had to encrypt for work email, and ever since then it regularly reboots whenever I try to do something (~25 second effort)... when I do the factory reset, or try reflashing a ROM, it seems to reboot before the action completes... Can you advise how I might solve this?
I've already tried CWM to redo everything... Factory reset does not complete as it always asks for the encryption password once started again... I just want to get back to unencrypted please. Any ideas? Maybe ODIN CWM then try a new install? formatting my SD card? Thanks in advance...
Hi, I had the same problem as above.
I was unable to factory reset with CWM recovery as it couldn't flash the data partition or sd card and couldn't mount them.
However, using the stock recovery, the factory reset and formatting worked fine returning back to an unencrypted device.

[Q] I messed up my phone...

I was formatting my SD card on my comp thru my phone, but I also thought it would be a good idea to format my phone's internal memory to free up space. Since then I can't text or do other various abilities with my GSII. What can I do? Currently running Litening ROM. Tried flashing and updating other roms but nothing has worked. Thanks.
edit:
just thought I should mention I'm on Vodafone UK monthly contract APN.
have you checked your imei to see if it's intact?
Can you explain how would i check that?
Attempted to flash stock vodaphone firmware and now stuck in continous boot loop.
He can't text and call. He deleted his folder. Not so smart, this is a not recoverable mistake when this is not backed up if I am correctly.
that's what I thought... formatted the wrong drive and it messed me up Thanks anyways.

recovery, wipe cache.
As only the /sdcard partition will be mounted by windows automatically im pretty sure that's what he formatted.
Your best bet is to go into recovery and wipe cache and dalvik cache.
If that doesn't work, do a backup and wipe user data from recovery.
To check IMEI go to settings > about phone > status
It should be down the bottom.
If its not there, you are kinda buggered and it will need to go back to a service centre (so make sure you flash back to stock and reset your flash counter with a jig).
Unless of cause you backed up your EFS folder.
But if you had formatted your whole internal storage, the root dir, then the phone wouldnt boot at all, so its probs just a cache problem.

Ok I wiped the caches and reinstalled the original firmware from Voda, the only thing that doesn't work is sending text messages. I can recieve them though but when I send I get a message saying it fails. Any thoughts?

say if i flash a ke2 firmware and boot the phone its still on kh3 when i hav booted it up if i unistall apps and reboot the are still there
If you have KH3 on your phone and flash full firmware via Odin then KH3 is replaced by what you have flashed . If not your are not following the instructions in some way .

My I9100 behaves quite strange.
I am unable to perform factory reset (using code from keypad or command from settings menu) - the phone reboots, goes into recovery mode where I can select wipe data/cache. Doing so has no effect on my phone, after another reboot the I9100 restarts in the same state as before factory reset.
The other thing is that I am unable to format interal memory. After using command from settings menu it says that memory is disconnected, formated, and after that all data (pics, mp3s, etc) are still available.
Also I am unable to flash ROM with any stock (tried KE4 and KE7) or aftermarket (Lightening) software. I tried Odin with and without PIT/Re-partition, also with no effect. The phone boots into previous state nevertheless confirmation in Odin that flashing completed successfully.
And the most aggravating thing is that after I reboot phone I am loosing all the recent data. The phone is booting in the state from before couple of days, with no recent messages etc. Thanks to Google account sync, the mail, calendar and so on re-sync properly, but it is no good solution since pictures, todos etc are gone after reboot.
I believe the thing started to occur after unsuccessful update to Twitter. Tried to do Market cache wipe (as suggested for similar cases to I9000 users), but also to no effect.
Have you any suggestion what else can I do?
this is my problem like this dude have

But wipe data/cache is not a factory reset . Thats called wipe data /factory reset .
The other thing is that I am unable to format interal memory.
In CWM recovery mounts and storage format data cache system and if you want to wipe all data off sd card wipe sd card .
After using command from settings menu it says that memory is disconnected, formated, and after that all data (pics, mp3s, etc) are still available.
Thats a clean phone nothing on SD card all data and OS wiped will not boot .
Then download mode
Odin and flash a stock rom .

[SOLVED] Possible brick - stuck on samsung logo

Ok so heres the info burb:-
My phone is UK SGS3 i9300 Vodafone, I rooted it a little while ago, tried a sammy variant custom rom (JB), then changed to paranoid android (cm10). I then tried injecting the sammy firmware files to try and get s memo work - it didnt work anyway, and i lost some data (had backups), so I updated the ROM (without data wipe) but things weren't right, so I was going to do a factory reset, but decided to change to a sammy rom again. aaaaand now it goes really wrong :/
I tried Psycho ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1947072) I did a factory reset, and then installed it. the boot logo changed but it just began to bootloop. no adb logcat... o and i had the touch CM recovery with extsd support. I tried again, but also wiped dalvik, cache factory reset, this time i noticed that when i did the factory reset, it rebooted recovery. flashed it again to no avail. so i found UltimaROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1911572) it had the aroma installer which i liked. I used a laptop to transfer the files onto my extsdcard. factory wipe (rebooted), wiped dalvik n cache, and went thu the installer fine, but still hung on the bootanimation. and to my surprise it was still the one from psycho rom. I wiped again and tried to install again but same problem. EDIT: I just remembered that it came up with a modem choice... I wasnt sure which to pick...
so I did some research tried to find out what was wrong... Following a few suggestions, I downloaded the I9300BUBLG3 (search on sammobile says thats uk vod - 4.04) from sammobile.com and flashed it via odin. I did skip triangle away, because I was just going to put a custom rom back on it. I'm more concerned about data wipe causing a reboot recovery... I also flashed cf-root again over the top to get recovery again. It STILL hangs on the samsung logo! I have even used the recovery after cf root flash, it still reboots when you select factory reset -_- I can get into recovery, and download mode - so that something right? why is it rebooting when i wipe data? did i flash the wrong stock firmware? Whats the next step? what haven't i tried? PLEASE tell me its not fully bricked?
Thanks in advance
/data GONE?!?!
UPDATE: I've just tried wiping again, and viewed the recovery log, it said it couldnt find /data/... it looked on the sdext as well i think same with other wipes... it cannot find source :'( HELP! I've got to go out for now (without my phone :'( ) - so i hope to return to some advice...
When you go to advanced mode you can mount all parts? Try to set permission only to test.
You can format each part at advanced?
ok so the mount / unmount feature appears to work (or so it says), but when i go to fix permissions, and check log - sh:fix_permissions: not found
when I format system n cache n preload it works as far as i can tell via logs, when i did /sdcard/ it said it couldn't remove "." and ".." I guess that just mean it was already blank (which i had done b4 messing all these roms)
it also just occurred to me to try adb shell in recovery! ha and it works! I can see the sdcard0 and sdcard1 can even access /data!
ok heres what I've got in /data/...
/data/app/*.apk - - - - LOTS OF APKS (i guess wipe didnt work)
/data/data/ -- - - the data for my apps
/data/dalvik - - empty
/sbin/fix_permissions - - is there!
there are obv all the other folders like app-private, media, user, system, gps etc etc
SO why cant my recovery perform a data wipe without rebooting(and failing)?? Ooooorrr what do I have to remove via adb to flash a rom?
--------UPDATE-------
right heres how ive SORT OF fixed it.
I used adb shell with su to wipe data (didnt work without su) then formatted system, cache dalvik etc etc all with adb. I rebooted recovery and flashed UltimaROM. It works and it HAS booted - this is how my phone was left today.
I do have several strange problems tho. I know my cable is a little odd - it doesnt always connect right (maybe thats how i caused the problem - mtp style fyi)- but i cannot seem to get it to copy to the the extsd or sd via the cable. I can use solid explorer to transfer files etc, I can use wifi explorer to transfer files... so the sdcard appears to work. My internal sdcard shows a could of ROM zips that are 0 bytes, and I cannot delete them. I cannot "convert to user app" with titianium backup pro (aka TT) to uninstall the stock email app. TT also shows my internal as 12.1gb total?!?!?! I've not restored any of my apps bar a couple which ive done via the market.
Soooo is my internal partitioned wrong? or does it need an error fixed, or partition alignment... and WHHHHYYYY does my recovery STILL reboot when i try to wipe data (i tried just after installing the current ROM)?? what have I done wrong?!?!
internal screwed i think
BUMP! XD please see above for the update...

Ive done it already, ive got it to boot... look at my update post above. I mean 12.1gb internal is kinda worrying me.
Cannot make head nor tail of the problem .
Standard reply to a non boot is .
Boot to recovery format cache data sd card and system .
Flash stock rom via Odin .
No recovery flash CF root recovery first .
That should give you a clean wiped phone .

OK well I'm going to make another thread now because it is booting. I have a different problem ATM really even tho its kinda a continuation of this... I'll change topic head to solved if I can...

Bricked Samung Tab E Verizon

Hi all,
Sigh. So it looks like I bricked my Samsung Tab E Verizon. I rooted it with King root and when I removed it, it is now in a endless boot loop. I've tried all sorts of things to try and recover it.
I used SkipSoft to set it up to be flashed but odin fails everytime. I was using the new ROMS found on this Forum. I've tried putting it into download mode and manually flash it and that didn't work. I can't Re-Root it as it won't stay on long enough to Root and they always fail. Right now I'm at a loss.
Can anyone help?
Thanks.
Do you have custom recovery or default? if you have default you can hold the home button and vol up button then the power button to get into recovery, once your done with that you can wipe cache and reboot, if that STILL does not work then factory reset your phone and re wipe cache, i know losing data sucks but its better then a brick. (this will work 99% of the time because the default recovery automatically re-installs stock rom)
If you have a custom recovery, then i recommend wiping everything including dalvik cache etc, making sure EVERYTHING is squeakly clean (execpt recovery obviously) , and find the driver for your samsung phone and download it on your computer and install, once you are done with that, put your phone into download mode, find your original STOCK rom for your phone, download it and flash it with odin, from there IF successfull you should have a fresh boot of your stock rom, then you can re-root and go on with your day.
Also make sure once you re-gain root access backup your rom so you will always have a plan b if everything goes bad. i cannot recommend this enough, even if you are an expert with flashing, there is always that small percentage things will go wrong and you should always have that backup ready.
Hi!
Thank you very much for the reply. You know, that was one of the things i tried initially when it happened. When I tried it, it wouldn't go into recovery mode. I then went on the odyssey of hell in trying to recover it.
When I read your post I was thinking; "Yeah I tried that", but then I thought I would give it another shot. I went into Factory Reset, it then actually went into the recovery menu. I deleted the cache and set it to data/factory reset and it's still looping. I get an error saying; "E:failed to mount /preload (no such directory)". I then tried to run update from external storage and it's telling me that it's disabled. I tried to update from ADB and it's disabled. I tried to apply from cache and it says; "APPLY_CACHE is depreciated". It's still looping.
Urghhhhhhhhh.......
