MJ7 Recovery??? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

okay, I made the mistake of getting to MJ 7. But now I'm stuck with tw roms and AM extremely tired of TouchWiz. Is there any hope of getting a custom recovery soon? I know we have safestrap but that only work for TouchWiz roms.

Realistically? Probably not. The security in place for locking down the bootloader pretty tough to crack. Devs are working on it. If want custom recovery. ..pick up a mdk phone or a dev phone

Minimal ROM?

I am on mk2 from fresh Odin and root. I've de bloated using the tool and I've removed extra VZW apk's that I don't need. Is there a minimal TW ROM that can be used with SS? It still seems like a lot of the Sammy gimmicks were left behind and I don't want to break the OS by deleting them. The only reason I went to mk2 is for the baseband and 4.3 update. I was already on me7 when I bought the phone.

Thats what i was thinking. I think I'll follow the two ports that are being messed with and go from there as well. I've read a few people using the TW roms to replace stock and not having issues through SS which seems ideal for space reasons.

There are only a few to choose from. Hyperdrive is the only one thats really made for SS. There are 2 others that can be installed via unpacking them in the backups folder of twrp and restoring them. Both seemed a little buggy on my phone after a bit but others have reported them as being stable.

MK2 mobile Odin ROM options

I've been away a while. If I'm understanding correctly I can one click route my MK2 and install Samsung based ROMs without a custom recovery using mobile Odin. Can anyone please confirm it or correct me? If I'm right can you give me ideas what to look for in a ROM that will work with this method. Thanks and sorry if this has been asked. I did search but there wasn't much to look at in terms of direct solutions.

Personally, I've never heard of what you're describing. The only way I know of with MK2 is to root using this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758.
After that, your only option for roms is Safestrap. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2441441. You will only be able to install TouchWiz 4.3 based roms. Make sure they're compatible with Safestrap before you install.
My advice would be to do a lot of research. This is a good place to start. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2606501.
Good luck
Edit: Just noticed your profile says your using AT&T. This is the Verizon forum.

This is the Verizon forum, not at&t. However I believe mobile odin is only useful for restoring the phone to a factory state without a computer, not flashing roms, yet you must be rooted. I could be wrong though.

Well as far as I know Odin is just for flashing the firmwares and a custom recovery is for flashing ROMs. Maybe there is an exception, but I don't think so

Maybe just clarifying what someone thinks a ROM is, guess you could think firmware is a ROM if you're new to this kind of stuff.

Generally yes for recoveries and stock firmwares however it does need to be in a tarball file which would take some time I imagine trying to recall what phone it was but this was a few years ago a lot has changed since the n

Ok looking like I misunderstood then. Thanks for the clarification. I don't think I trust the idea of the safestrap. I know it's safer, but I have been flashing ROMs for years and the recovery method makes me warm and tingly. I don't think they'll ever crack into the ability to flash the way we're all used to. For every genius we have that's capable of figuring it out, Samsung has 10 that can stop it. I pray they get it, but my hopes are fading.

safestrap has been around for years for other phones and recently hashcode ported to the S4 last fall. I have used it since that time with zero issues and have been running several ROMs at a time to evaluate, with again no issues with safestrap. Not sure why you wouldn't "trust it".....as it gives all us non-MDK owners ability to run something else than just stock.

Exactly, I've been hammering away on Safestrap since my RAZR and it's really safe just like the name implies. Granted I could flash AOSP on the razr, but my guess is at some point kexec will come around for the S4 as well. Too many really smart people working on that project for it to fail in my opinion.
Anyways.... For now Safestrap is awesome, and happy to have it.

Unfortunately the bootloader was locked down very tight by Verizon and the devs are working hard for a workaround but there is nothing in terms of aosp Roms for safe strap. If you want something with aosp styling, I'd recommend hyperdrive rls14. It has aosp theming and insane battery life.

And to be honest there are so many more SafeStrap Roms now than back when I had my mj7 S4...its great. Especially when the devs try to add in more aosp features its really not so bad having a fully locked down s4. It's come a long way that's all I'm saying.

I know we could probably go on forever here but I just want to say I've been running Negalite 4.4 (tw) and Sacs ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2512983
On my girls sprint s4 and there both awesome. Someone should see about porting them over or whatever is needed for them to be on Verizon.
Both would make great additions to the SafeStrap list. I realize however though that doing things like this take a lot of time.... Just throwing it out there that's all

Not sure anyone can help you if your not sure you want to try the method in the first place. The thread Naddict refers to says its roots MK2 in the title. The bootloader Is locked so no AOSP. Theres a sticky that most people refer users to when they ask this question (which is at least 4 times a day) I trust you'll be able to find it though.

The only reason I wasn't sure if I wanted to try it is because I'm strictly wanting AOSP ROMs... I hate Touchwiz with a passion. So if I can't use any AOSP ROMs, I won't bother rooting it.
Hopefully they get the bootloader unlocked soon.

No that's not possible sorry. Wish it were that easy.
Look into SafeStrap compatible ROMs for the Verizon s4... There's a list on here of them. Some pretty cool ones that have the feel of aosp.
Or... Go on swappa and buy an MDK build which you can run aosp on.

Not another "when will we get root" thread........
You will get it, when you get it.
But then, you may never get it.........
Why do people take the OTA then wonder about root.
If it's that important, be patient.......
I agree. What's the rush to update only to be stuck? We live in an instant gratification society anymore. Wait to update. There is nothing of significance in the update that you need it right away.
Verizon is really trying to clamp down on tethering. Foxfire is broke in the update... The most Verizon app requests root privileges to track tethering on unlimited plans. Stay away from updates until those in the know give you the go ahead.

right so why wait? Why not Downgrade to MK2 then flash any system img capable of MK2 install safestrap then re-upgrade the right way? Look under the development section we have a 20+ page spread on how to do it properly. This will give you root and access to a butt load of new 4.4.2 ROMs. It will also give you root you'll just have to deal with this method for time being i doubt it will change anytime soon. It works fine if you havent upgraded yet put on the breaks and do not upgrade your bootloaders. All you really need to upgrade is your AP and CP with hlos. Then switching between 4.4 and 4.3 is cake. Right now I've got 4.4.2 Custom ROM on my stock slot and a 4.3 gDux 1.1 on 1st slot and an AOSP ROM on my 2nd slot. Ive got a variety literally goes 4.4.2 to 4.3 to 4.2.2 AOSP and I couldnt be happier in terms of what I can throw on an use with my phone.
Actually Firefox just updated and now works on 4.4.2
