[Q] Where do I find the *.tar file in ROMs? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everybody.
After much trouble trying to update my device from 4.1.2 to 4.3, I have hit a wall.
I've downloaded Odin, Samsung drivers and some custom ROMs. But I can't find the .tar file.
I rooted my device, so I cannot recieve the update using the device itself. All my friends, who have S3's, have been updated to 4.3. I'm the only one missing.
Can any of you help me? Refer me to some sort of sticky, or give me a quick step by step on what to do?
I have browsed through all folders in the ROMs I've downloaded, but with no success. After 5 hours of browsing for info, I am close to being furious.
Thanks in advance. Everything is appreciated.

If you mean official l firmwares then you should head towards Sammobile.com and find the file for your device and your region... If you have rooted and you don't want hassle with your PC and Odin 5 go to general section of s3 and there you will find zip files for those official roms with performance and battery tweaks and flash those using a custom recovery.. For getting a custom recovery the simplest method is download ROM manager and install it... Or otherwise you have. tar files for touch recoveries like cwm touch, Phil's or twrp... but if you don't want that then sammobile.com is best fit you and yes you will lose root after that...

Thank you for this. I am finally on the right track with correct rooting and recovery! I will most likely try and get a custom ROM tomorrow, if everything goes as planned. Again, thank you very much!

[Q] Help! How to remove CWM from S2

Hi,
I just got my Android and happened to Root it with a firmware containing CWM because I really had no clue as to what it was. Now I would want to be able to remove this icon CWM from my phone. I have tried flashing the kernel to no avail. Please help me with a step by step procedure to remove it since I'm absolutely new to Androids. My S2 runs gingerbread 2.3.6. I did check the web but am so confused with all the options provided.
Thanks in advance.

It is strongly recommended to back up stock ROM before u give try to Custom ROM.
*#1234# - Check your Firmware version before u do Rooting and make a note some where
You can use those information to download your STOCK ROM from many website (google them)

Since you are rooted, use any file explorer with root access and delete the cwm manager.apk.
Second option is use root un-installer and uninstall the cwm manager

in some Firmwares CWM is included in system applications, so cant simply uninstall it, you can use Titanium backup application to uninstall system apps,
But before uninstalling better you learn more about Rooting and the functions of this app and other root apps. This is a very usefull app in the rooted and Clockwork mod installed devices, for rebooting into recovery easily, kernel flashing, backing up of the Rom ect..
you can have informations from below sticky thread as well as from my signature links.

I installed CWM to test some custom ROMs on my device. What if for some i reason i have to take my mobile to service center.
Will they charge me (even if my device is under warranty) because i have installed CWM?
Do I really need to remove CWM? If yes, how??
Do you have a 3rd stupid question to ask?

Yes you will need to remove root so flash Sam firmware with mobile Odin and don't root. Now back to stock.
Or send it in and report bk

It would be very helpful if you can provide a link for reference

Thanks for replying andrewwright!! (you too "theunderling"!!:angel
I haven't actually installed CWM yet and came here to clear my this doubt.
Why Sam Firmware (if Sam = Samsung) while my device is XOLO q800? Can I take a backup of my my stock firmware in some way because XOLO is not a popular brand and I won't get much support(stock firmware) over internet.
Also, I read somewhere that particular firmware corrosponds to a particular chipset(mine is MT6589), is it true??
I would really appreciate if you can provide a link for reference where I can read further or otherwise some people will keep yelling here "noob......noob"

New to galaxy s 3 flashing

Hey I have a couple of quick questions on flashing. First question is what does Odin do? It looks like it flashes roms and roots your phone. Is that correct? If I brick my phone somehow can that unbrick my phone? Another question is what is the main way to flash roms on the galaxy s3?is it Odin? Clockwork mod? Twrp? Is twrp and good manager even supported on the galaxy s3? Thank you for all of your help.
Also I know that this is a subjective question but what rom should I start with? Which is the fastest and most feature rich rom with little to no bugs?
if you dont now know what Odin is you should not flash yet. You can flash a .tar Rom using Odin and a .zip using cwm. Most of the custom roms are available for cwm flashing. All the stock roms are available in tar format I.e. Odin flash.
Subjective ans to your subjective ques... The best Rom available is stock IMO

Odin cannot root your phone. Is just a software to flash .tar file into your phone. Most people just use CWM to flash roms.
There is no perfect rom. Just try flashing until you find the right rom for you.

Odin can only flash .tar roms. If you call "being in a boot loop" a brick then yes Odin can take u back to stock. However Odin will not unbrick your phone.
S III is brickable however it is extremely hard to brick it

[Q] The easiest way to flash stock

Hi all,
I want to be sure here for obvious reasons, i had a rooted s3 with custom rom/firmware, which i then used triangle, went back to stock and unrooted. However the firmware i installed isnt what i wanted, i read that the firmware with xx in it was for uk use but it seems to be primarily for israil as it has jewish as its default language and a jewish calender installed as default. So i have now downloaded which i hope is a tmobile uk firmware 19300xxella_i9300t from sammy. will i need to root again then install this with odin then reset counter then unroot and will this download cover the rom and firmware as im never to sure the firmware (screen entered when holding volume up, power button and middle button is now official stock. but not sure if this will allow me to install the official?
is theis file 19300xxella_i9300t the rom or firmware im now confused
You dont have to root to flash stock rom. You might need to reset your S3 though..
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Just download the stock rom that you want (e.g. from sammobile.com) and flash it via Odin. Afterwards do a factory reset and you should be good to go. No root required.
Follow the flashing via Odin section of the guide

Firmware means the full firmware and operating system and modem.
Rom is just a word used to describe a firmware file .
Stock rom stock firmware the same .

[Q] Samsung s3 i9300 stock rom but rooted

I hope somebody can help. I would like to know if anyone has a stock Android 4.1.2 XXEMG4 ROM for download? That is already rooted to flash.
I would like this to be able to go back to stock purely to have the choice and without having to re-root or losing modem efs and the imei.
Is it possible? Has Anyone done it? I am a bit new to the phone, but any insight appreciated.

Stock rom of your choice and root and recovery via PhilZ recovery is the simple answer.
Basics read first.

JJEgan Please clarify
thank you all for quick responses. I would like more info on JJEgan reply if i may. It sounds too easy.
1. Basically i restore stock formware and load up
2. Install PhilZ Touch recovery the way its explained.
3. Install Root_SuperSU.0.98.Only-signed.zip via recovery
and its all safe and done and rooted with recovery.
Is that right? Then edf imei etc all safe?:victory:
also would this work http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1868004. stumbled on it by chance.
either way i have some options? The older Versions?

No idea what you want super su usual method would be from Play store .
EFS if you are rooted now then back it up now if not after step 2 above .
edf imei etc all safe>>>> safe not 100% nothing is 100%
The rom you link to is not stock as its added.
All apps fully Deodexed
Rooted with SuperSU
Fully Zipaligned
BusyBoxed
Insecure Kernel
init.d support
Updated Adfree Hosts
As said MG4 onwards changes EFS layout this means that you dont flash an earlier rom or modem .

Onwards not backwards is the rule regarding MG4 .
FE7 NO
MJ1 would be yes
brilliant
Ok. I think im going with your original answer. To preserve samsungs original firmware with extra root and recovery. Then play with slim bean rom but have the option to go back. Seems far safer.:good::victory:

Downgrading from 4.3 to 4.2.1 and the No Network Issue...

Hello guys....
I am very thankful to the xda forum and all the members who helped me to get through a serious problem..
Recently I installed 4.3 Leaked version on my GT-I9300 and the ROM proved to be worst ROM of life. So I decided to go back to 4.1.2.
I installed the Stock ROM via Odin but I confronted a serious issue, when I was finished the installation I found that there was no network at all... Samsung's official told me that it is impossible to reverse the Android version...
I had no clue what to do. I flashed many ROMs but no solution at all. My IMIE was also kinda jumbled..
Many guys said it is EFS issue... But it is not EFS issue...
It is all because of different Modem issue.. all you need to do is just install a clean Stock ROM from http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/2/ and Install the patched modem... you are done..
So here is the solution:
1. Download your desired Stock ROM for your Country from Sammobile...
Link http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/2/
2. Install the ROM via Odin
3. Root it and Install your favorite recovery.
4. Install the Patched MG4 Modem Zip in Recovery Mode. Link https://www.dropbox.com/s/geispctijpxqjms/Patched_Modem_I9300XXEMG4.zip
You are done....
This problem is all about MODEM version, so I don't think if EFS tricks are involved here.....
Finally credits go to all the XDA Members who put their heart and soul to present all the required guidance for me to be able to downgrade to lower Android Version.. I have only compiled the whole stuff into a single thread....
Thanks,,,

I can confirm that this method works. XEMB5 (4.1.2 stock rom) on top of the crappy 4.3 update, rooted it and then installed CWM. flashed the patch modem from the link he gave and the XEMB5 rom is working with network running again. but it seems like the battery is awful, 95% in just 10 minutes? lost 5 percent for that short amount of time -_-
then again, thanks for this!

My problem is little different. I can flash any ROM via Odin[DO NOT FORGET TO CHARGE YOUR MOBILE ABOVE 80% battery level!]:
1. Goto recovery by pressing "vo upl+home+power" release when you Samsung's bootloader.
2. Do factory reset/wipe everything.
3. Remove battery for 10secs. Then put it back.
4. Now press "vol down+home+power" to bring it into download mode. Then follow odin flashing procedure. It will work for any Samsung rom. No need to intall any custum roms.
Now going to my problems:
A. My s3 shuts down when it's idle.
B. Bluetooth button does not work. It tries to go to ON position but goes back OFF after 2/3 sec.
After downgrading from earlier 4.3 [SWC] I have even upgraded it with latest 4.1.2 xxemh4 but no luck!
Every thing works network, wi-fi etc. except above two problems!
Help me please!!
I FOUND SOMETHING, WHEN I DO *#1234* IT SAYS CSC: UNKNOWN though my network is ok and wi-fi works fine. Lemme try patching CSC as featherknox suggested!
@featherknox, But your patched modem can not be flashed in recovery[stock] mode as it says "Signature verification failed". HELP ME WHAT I SHOULD DO?
