[Q] MDK w/ Latest Stock Rom - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hi All,
I was curious what my best method to receiving the latest stock Rom on my phone would be, while, if possible, maintaining MDK as my phone's Bootloader.
All I'm really looking for is the MDK bootloader, Latest Stock Rom, and root.
I'm no longer really interested in keeping up with custom roms at this time, which has led me to consider unrooting the phone and taking the OTA updates, but haven't yet, as I feel I may regret it later.
Please advise,
Dan.

If you are rooted and have recovery just flash the mk2 full stock deodex...its 100% stock mk2(newest ota) minus the locked down bootloader...it gives you the full experience without losing ability to flash aosp roms...don't forget to backup current rom beforehand... Good luck!

Hey thanks James,
Is there a link on the forum here somewhere to the download? I tried skimming through the Android Development pages with no luck.
Thanks for the quick reply.

I rooted, best way to keep up to date?

As it says I rooted my phone, a samsung galaxy S3 through Sprint. I know I am not supposed to accept OTA updates, so whats the best way to keep up to date? Is there a sneaky thread somewhere? When I get the updates I assume I just flash them with odin and all will be good no interference with root access?
Thanks for the help.

Whenever updates are released, usually developers will incorporate them in their roms, and if you are just running stock, then usually someone will release the stock rom with latest update that will still keep you rooted.

I am just running rooted stock. Any good place to keep track of that info?
depends on update
it depends on the update as to whether you would need to get it or not.
the 2 updates so far sprint has put out have been ok,
several instructions are out there to help with install if rooted.
won't work if you have Clockworkmod as the recovery though, unless incorperated into the ROM

I have clockworkmod as recovery, root instructions required it. :\
Thing I really want is an update to get the brightness widget in the notificaiton bar. The current version I have does not have that update.

I have not worked with a custom rom before, though I am not opposed to doing so. What should I know about customer roms? I heard that CM9 was out for the S3 what do think of that as a custom mod.
its out as a nightly, basically a beta
i hear it gets rid of all the samsung goodies

Hmm ya it looks like a good choice. I think I may go with it, but cyanogenmod has a nightly too which I have heard is supposed to be a great rom.

[Q] Can't update/ deleted bloatware

I'm very new to all this and realize I already made a few mistakes. I have a ME7 gs4. I have it rooted (the bootloader is still locked) and deleted all the bloatware. I now realize that by doing this I pretty much ruined my chances of upgrading my phones software. I know the newest upgrade is still android 4.2 but I am concerned for when 4.3 or 4.4 comes out. Is there any way to restore the Verizon and Samsung bloatware with a locked bootloader so I can upgrade in the future? Any help and advise would greatly be appreciated.
Rooting and deleting bloatware is far from a mistake... you pretty much have to do it if you want this thing to run decently.

I understand that, and I'm glad I did. I'm just concerned for future updates of android.

Perhaps I should have elaborated what that link was... it's a guide to get back to stock firmware, meaning that just follow that guide and you'll be able to update normally if you wish
Thank you so much. I appreciate it :good:

Question. So I am able to do this even though I have ME7 on my phone with a locked bootloader? I was under the impression that I can't flash anything with a locked bootloadr.

Yes you can do that with a locked bootloader. The procedure doesn't touch the bootloader (although Odin can flash bootloaders).

[Q] How do I go back to stock ?

im on build JDQ39.I545VRUAMDK and rooted. I have removed a lot of bloat on the phone and it is not stock anymore. I want to flash a factory image so I could update to 4.3. Any guide I could follow to get there ?
Thanks in advance.

Theres a short guide in the thread that has the odin images. Basically download the image and flash under pda. Make sure you got all the proper drivers.
Hit thanks if I helped you out. Doing a little bit of reading goes a long way. Sent via tapatalk.

In case you're not aware, you're lucky enough to be on MDK which is the ONLY build to allow you to unlock the bootloader and flash custom roms. If you take any updates past MDK you will lose the ability to unlock the bootloader and will only be able to root. Also, THERE IS NO GOING BACK once you take the updates, so if you change your mind, tough luck. Most people here including myself would strongly advice to stay on MDK.

Stay on MDK. A 4.3 touch wiz rom won't be far behind. Be patient. Nitro had an alpha release already. Data isn't working but it'll get there.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
Also very little difference you will see between 4.2 and 4.3. Not worth giving up bootloader for.
Thank you all for your recommendations, I would definitely stay with the MDK for a while.

Please help a newbie

Ok, a little info on me. I have had an iPhone since 2007. I decided to buy a used G S4 to see if I would like it. So far I like it a lot but need help getting it just right.
I am trying to install custom roms on my device. I want to try CM.10 first. So far I have achieved root aaccess, and installed gooManager.
The problem is that when I install a custom recovery script so I can have a custom recovery the phone locks up. What could I be doing wrong? I am sure this has been covered a hundred times but there is so much info on here its overwhelming to someone new to android. Thanks to everyone for the great work and contributions s already made.
Try odin to flash!

I watched all of the videos. Do I have a locked boot loader? Does that keep me from installing open recovery script? If so do I need a device with an older baseband in order to root, install custom recovery, and run custom roms?
I have a SCH-I545 running 4.3 with an mk2 baseband.
Yes, your bootloader is locked and currently there is no way to unlock it. Safestrap is your only option for ROMs now. Start with reading the OP.

How do I find an older gs4 with an unlocked bootloader? How will I know when I find one? What baseband version should I be looking for?

Check out www.swappa.com
People have em up for sale, just look for the last three letters of the build (or baseband I suppose) to be MDK. Anything newer than that is locked down.

Information is easily available in these forums concerning bootloaders and rooting and recoveries....with you phone your only option is safestrap and just one or 2 roms are available..
look before you jump
Nobody posts the build number in their adds on ebay or that swappers site. I'm messaging them all individually haha. Lmfao why didn't I read about this more before buying this boot locked pos lol.

I will be honest this is the first phone that i have ever been satisfied with rooted debloated stock but I am very greatful my flashing itch is able to be somewhat scratched with safestrap. The above builds aren't worthless but I guess that all depends on your point of view and what your wanting to do with your device.

don't understand the statement?
the stock roms run extremely well and with root you can debloat pretty easily. S4 phone is a superior device to most anything else out there at this moment whether you mod it or not
Hey your in luck there is a guy selling his mdk s4 for 330 on the general thread.

From Rooted / Unlocked 4.1.2 VRAMC3 to MJ9

Sorry guys, I been reading so much about rooting my brain is starting to go numb. I just rooted / unlocked bootloader and flashed twrp with CASUAL and wanted to know if its worth it to go to MJ9, Just wondering what your opinions are.
Thanks!

NOOOOO!!! Don't go to MJ9!!! You WILL get a locked bootloader for which there's no unlock method.
Stick to unlocked VRAMC3 and just try custom 4.3 roms by using a custom recovery

Well 4.3 is the latest Touchwiz where as 4.4.2 is AOSP. And the goodness really depends on the user.
Also, you can update to the MJ9 firmware without locking your bootloader. ONLY using the OTA will lock your bootloader. You can flash the firmware in ODIN to update, and then install a custom 4.3 ROM.
OK

I've updated to 4.4.2 for both CM11 and OmniROM and in both cases, my signal strength has decreased. Maybe it's my area? I've seen posts about updating the modem/radios outside of the ROM, which seemed to help a small amount.

I have been on 4.3 since the leak came out..flashed N3bula, Sophisticated and am on Nephilium now. I was a Beans devotee for a long time on 4.1.2 and will definitely be trying 23 when it comes out.
All that said, I can only point to one noticeable improvement with 4.3 and that is apps to SD card (I never wanted to do an SD card swap). If anything I have given up a bunch of features from Beans 22 that I liked. Hopefully 23 will be everything from 22 and more on 4.3.
