I see a ton of questions about how to put apps onto your SD Card.
I'm looking for the opposite.
I'm on Android 4.3 Galaxy Note 3 (ATT) and suddenly I started to see one or two recently installed apps turn into grey icons that say SD on them. I removed my SD card and then suddenly I noticed all~ of my recently installed apps turn into grey icons and when I tap on them - it goes to the google play store and says the apps have not been installed. Upon reinserting the card, the apps return.
What gives? I don't want this and it just started happening out of nowhere. Any ideas?

Download ROM Toolbox from Play Store. It has option in 1st tab called app2sd.
You can choose Internal memory, so apps will be installed there instead of SD Card.

I just got a new sd card with more memory space(had 2g now 16g). Now that i have the room i would like to transfer all my apps to sd. The thing is a lot of the apps i have ive made into widgets that way i dont have to scroll thru my app drawer every time. My bf was telling that if it is an app that i made a widget then i cant transfer it to sd. He says that the app ends up failing or having issues. I transferred my titanium a little while ago and have not had any issues. So im wondering if what he told me is true or that i can transfer to sd without encountering issues down the road??

As long as your not using built Widgets but an app shortcut (which is what it sounds like your doing) you maybe OK. But yes apps stored on SD cards with Widgets do get messes up.
If you need the widgets you'll need to leave on the phone memory. Most of these apps state this in their documentation.
Sometimes apps requires you to download a widget if you plan on moving the app to the sd card.
On my Samsung Galaxy S2 on Sprint I used Apps2SD by Sam Lu to move many of my apps over to my new 32 gig SD Card. After a bit I realized that I had moved many of the apps over that should have stayed on the main internal storage, mainly because of widgets. So I moved many of them back.
Shortly after doing that I was at a retreat with my phone on airplane mode to preserve battery life. I took some pictures and videos, read my Kindle app and Bible and then plugged it in to charge. The next day several of the pictures and videos I took showed up as a black icon and were not accessible. Then I noticed that all the apps that I had moved to the SD card were "greyed out" and even some of the apps that I had moved back to the internal storage. The phone then told me the SD card needed to be formatted.
Since then I have tried to use file recovery software to recover missing files on the SD card and it finds hundreds of photos and several videos, but nothing else. So the big question is, where are my apps? Does anyone have an idea of how to recover my missing apps? They show up on my phone with "greyed out" icons so the phone thinks they're installed but obviously they're not. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Nathan
The same with me...

I had the same problem my apps that I had transferred on my SD Card had a grayed icon. This happened when I had plug my USB to store some files on my internal SD Card in my I9000. When I plug my phone and pressed the "Connect USB storage" button it seems that the app had freezed so I unplugged my phone and did it again for several times. When Im fed up I tried to browse my phone and there the icons of the apps I had transferred on my internal SD card had turned gray. I tried to unmount and mount my internal sd card but still no luck. I tried to restart the phone and even remove the battery still no luck. I guess the best solution is to reinstall the apps. Sad to say if i try to plug the phone again as an external drive I can see the files on my phone including the OBB files of the games

in theory, if you re-install the app without clearing the cache, then all your files and settings should be there.

I did reinstall my apps and most of them retained their settings. I later had the SD Card begin reporting as needing to be formatted again so I removed it out of fear I may have gotten a bad SD Card. I don't know if the phone has issues with loosing SD Cards or if I bought a bad card. Haven't had time to trouble-shoot so I'm just going without a card for now.
My partner at work has the Motorola Admiral for a workphone. It is unrooted of course because of work and it is running 2.3.5. He previously had a 1 GB card in the phone with very few apps installed on it (about 8). He wanted a bigger card so he bought an 8GB card and placed it in the phone and formatted it. He gave the 1GB to his daughter who already formatted it.
He assumed like I that he could just go to Google Play and reinstall the apps. However this is not the case. When he downloads the apps he gets an error installing the apps.
Now this is the strange part. The apps do not show up in app drawer. But if he goes to application manager they are still listed there as com.xxx.xxxx with a generic icon and a little sd icon on the corner of each. Selecting them here crashes the phone back to the settings menu.
So he can't uninstall them. He can't reinstall them. SD card was completely formatted. How does he remove them from the application manager and allow for reinstallation? Any ideas? Thanks.
Hello Folks! I've been lurking these forums for a few months now, but now it's time to join up! You guys are awesome.
I've got a question relating to the CM10 A2 ROM. Install went smoothly from a fresh SBF/Root/Flash. I got all my applications installed and moved them all to the phone. I have a problem that occurs when connecting the phone to my computer via USB. If I leave it in charge mode, no problem. Upon clicking the option to allow USB Mass Storage, I get quite a few apps that FC. The list is as follows:
sManager
AutomateIt Pro
App Protector Pro
ROM Toolbox Pro
TiBu
I get popup notifications that the apps' processes have stopped and upon going to the app drawer, the icons have been replaced with the Android Robot. The problem persists after disabling mass storage and the apps FC on attempting to launch them. The only thing to fix them seems to be rebooting. I know each of these apps have permission req's that read/write the SD card, is that what is causing the problem? Any way to fix? Thanks a bunch!

Maybe because the apps are installed on your SD card and when you turn on USB storage, it cant display on your phone anymore. Are they installed on your SD card?

That was the first thing I checked and unfortunately they aren't installed on the SD. I moved all my apps to the phone.

I cant think of any other reason why they would stop working in USB mode. Maybe there are certain things they use that are on the SD Card and not necessarily the app itself. It does warn you that some apps will not work when you select USB mode.
IMHO I think it has something to do with the new SD card directory. I've used almost all the ROMs for the x2 including the cm7 and cm9. This seems to only occur with cm10.
Edit: I noticed some of these apps have folders located on the internal SD. I doubt that has changed across ROM's, any idea why it would change with this one?

Alright. So it appears that the problem is caused by a new way the play store distributes paid apps to JB. From reading around in various sites, these apps are sent to the "app-asec" folder as .asec files instead of .apk. When connecting to USB, CM10 seems to go through some internal trouble (i.e. lots of screen flickering/redrawing and sometimes it seems to soft reboot). My theory is that how the play store is installing is causing the issues app developers are seeing. The app is attempting to start before the app-asec folder is mounted, causing FC's.
Edit: Other users have reported a workaround that if you restore the apps with TiBu or something similar it places the actual .apk file in the correct directory. The issue only seems to affect paid apps installed by the play store.

Sorry to keep posting on my own thread, but I've found a workaround. This also seems to have fixed the launcher redraws and screen flickering I mentioned above.
Navigate to the /data/app-sec folder
Make note of all the apps installed there as .asec files.
Using your backup program of choice (I used TiBu for the majority and ROM Toolbox so I could backup TiBu), backup all the apps you found.
Uninstall the previously mentioned apps.
Restore using the same backup program(s).
Go back to the /data/app-sec folder and verify that all the files are gone.
Go to /data/app folder and you should see the .apk's from the restored apps.
Hope this helps someone else!

Good to see you figured it out and also, good find. I noticed plugging in my device as USB and having it "soft reboot". Lately I haven't had the issue happen again. Your theory makes sense now since there is one app in that location and it is a theme I was using but lately, have not been. Ill move it as you suggested.
Hello,
I have a Galaxy s2 lte currently with 4.1.2 . Just purchased a Kingston 16gb micro sd,
Formatted it.
Went through the settings selecting 'move app to sd and the app would open the close on start up.
Restarted phone, they would show up as grey stating they were not installed
I have redone this by uninstalling, installing and re-moving multiple times.
Yet non of the apps will stay functional.
I have never rooted my phone nor do I wish to
So far I haven't found other forum posts about it.
Since my problem is not just the home page but the app pages as well.
